A police-officer in an alternative Victorian London where a new age of steam has dawned, bringing with it new types of crime.
With his brown hair cropped short, as per Metropolitian Police regulations, and dark hazel eyes, John's features would be unremarkable if it was not for his strength of expression and the steeliness of the lines about his set mouth and his straight brows.
He is a tall man, and powerfully-built, with an air of practicality that can be found in almost every aspect of his appearance from his clean-shaven jaw to his smart work dress. Even his off-duty and undercover clothes are soberly practical. He does not look like a man to be crossed or one who would bend easily to any will but his own.
Particularly noticeable, is the fact that his thumb, index and middle finger, along with a significant portion his right hand is mechanical, having presumably been put in place after an old injury.
John has determination as unbendable as a steel bar and is fiercely independent, struggling to follow orders that he does not personally agree with. This has somewhat contributed to his lack of promotion past Detective Inspector. The men under his command know him as Bulldog Marlowe (not to his face, of course) and, friend or enemy, his straight-forward attitude and strength of will is respected within the force.
When in uniform, he used to carry his truncheon, lantern and handcuffs but these days, since he joined the CID, he is never without his notebook. He does own a steam pistol and will carry it on occasion.
