Wing City Lake: BeachRaekin

The creature in the lake...

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Arluar

Description

Image

Raekin is a creature of the sea. Her body is covered in fins that while on land act as her clothing, and while underwater, are useful for propulsion. From the top of her head, she has two fan like fins known as her crown fins. Her forehead is bare with two strong brows visible. Her skin tone, made of varying shades of green, is flecked with spots of dark sea green and dark teal. Her entire body is hairless, but the four tentacles straight off an octopus are aesthetically the same thing as if she had hair growing out of her scalp.

Her largest fins are by far the two wing like structures on her back that are collapsible like all of her fins. Over her chest are two large fins that sprout from under her arms. When detracted, these fins hold flat against her arms. Her elbows are tipped with wings that come in handy when steering underwater. Hands and feet are also used in that task, looking much like frog's feet with the webbing between long thin fingers and toes. The last set of fins sprouts off opposite sides of her legs, aiding in moving water when she kicks.

History

The brief amount of time her pregnant mother took in laying her eggs was the complete breadth of her parenting. Their people have many names: Gillyweeds, Fin People, Sea Monkies - but Raekin always referred to herself as an Aquain, the name her kind had when they swam the waters around Italy. Childhood was always quick, after all, if you stayed small, you were dinner. Kin stopped growing when she reached a standing height of 5 foot, 11 inches. She had been alone for the vast majority of her life and as might be expected of a human-like being, she grew lonely.

Near the ports she often heard of Wing City and the tales of the creatures there inspired her to leave the greater waters and instead find a nice body of water close to Wing City. This water spot turned out to be the lake. She was happy to have a home of such size especially in this land. For the first few months, she stayed in its waters and just chatted with those that came to the shores, but lately she has been curious about what lies deeper in the city. Perhaps it was time for an adventure...

So begins...

Raekin had been out in the waters all this time and only now chose to emerge. At the crest of a lapping wave, she breaks the water's surface and lifts herself onto her feet. Her breathing switched over to air as the gills on her neck matched the pulsing of her nostrils. Her nose was long and flat and held little offense in her vision. She had managed this time, to cover herself with her body fins before coming out of the water. Sunlight was still in the air as she walked a slow walk towards the shore. She felt the water pulling over her webbed feet and smiled, heading for Lord Maelik

Raekin spent a few moments looking the creature over as she walked up. Her feet displaced the sand in such a gentle way, that she made little to no sound. She cast a shadow over Maelik's eyes as she stopped at his side. The sun beams spilled over her form as she squatted there. "Excuse me...Are you a resident of Wing City?" she asked politely, keeping her fins covering her body. Her wing fins were translucent in the light, still managing to create a bit of a shadow, though.

Raekin looked rather odd while squatting...Well she always looked odd, but that wasn't the point. With her legs bent, she goes ahead and settles her knees in the sand. Her tentacles snaked their way over her shoulders, the tips touching her chest-covering fins. Her smile was sweet, although every tooth was pointed and fang-like. "Oh good, I washed up on the right shore." Her body was glistening in the light as she dripped onto the beautiful sand beneath them. "My name's Raekin." she offered, sweet smile showing again. "I've come to Wing City for an adventure!"

Raekin was silent all through the display, but when he apologized, she lifted a hand to her mouth and let out a giggle. "No worries...I'm actually just here to meet new creatures and experience new things..." She took a moment to turn her head and look out over the beach. As she twisted, all her fins became visible, there must have been over 20 of them. "Do you mind if I ask what you are? You're from Hell so you're a demon? I've heard of those!" None of this seemed to phase her: coming up on a new shore, meeting a demonic dragonman from hell...She seemed quite open to all of it. "I'm a type of mer-person." she added, as if he couldn't tell that much.

Raekin opened the door to the bar and stumbled inside, flopping her webbed feet on the floor. She was no longer dripping wet, but still glistening as water froze on her body from the trek from the lake. Her crown fins perked up as she came in and looked around. Spotting a large...bear near the fireplace, she strides on over to it before squatting down a bit at its side. "Hello, Mr. Bear..." she said to Mero as Echo came over and spoke to him as well. Was this new friend not well? How sad...Kin frowned a bit and turned her amphibian-like face towards the hypochondriac.

Raekin wondered why her bear hadn't responded. Leaning forward a bit, she tried to get into his line of sight. She offered a friendly smile filled with fang-like teeth, not choosing to speak just yet. When questioned, her body responded by perking those hair less brows and distorting her cranium. "A new friend, yes. He's my first bear friend," she responded to Echo. Bravely, her hand went out and touched Mero's gloved hand, a tentacle falling over her arm as if it were nothing more than thick hair. "Mr. Bear? Are you alright?" She turned to look up at Echo again. "I think he likes to be warm like I like to be wet."

Raekin looked at the bear with wide eyes, reaching out with a tentacle to keep him out of the fire. She was about to answer when she became engrossed with another question. "Bear, what happened to your snout?" she questioned of Mero before just shaking her head and casting her question away. "I'm a mer-person...an Aquain." she said indignantly, putting her hands on her hips as she stands up straight. "I'd kindly thank you to not gawk at me like that and answer this question - Is this a bar?"

Raekin frowned as she collapsed her wing-fins. Her crown-fins followed the same deflation as she sighed and crossed her arms over her chest. Being near the fire was causing the ice on her form to melt and drip on the floor so she trailed droplets across the floor as she went to the bar and sat beside Liza. She was much thinner with all her fins collapsed against her body. Even her toes were held together, and the same with her fingers. When the bar tender asked what she wanted, she replied, "Water, please." Realizing she had been rude to the young Echo Lad, she turns back on the stool and faces the fire. "I meant no harm, sir...The bear just looked to be lonely."

Raekin gave Echo Lad a look as if she had just been betrayed before extending her hand to him and shaking lightly. "I'm Raekin...or just Kin, if you prefer." Her glass was set in front of her so she turned and took a long drink from it. "I'm from the ocean." she explained, setting her elbow on the bar's edge and leaning her chin on her hand. "Are you one of the people I've heard of? Like a super human?"

Raekin perked up, crown-fins rising, as she looked to Christopher. "They...They serve the alcohol here?" She still had a lot to learn, but vodka she knew. Vodka had made her sick last night. Realizing she had interrupted things, she awkwardly turns to face the bar again. When the 'tender asked if she wanted another drink, she pushed her empty water glass towards him. "Just water please..." As one could imagine, she needed a good bit of water to survive walking around the surface. That didn't stop her from exploring, though.

Raekin looked over to the money laid down on the counter. "Does water cost that? I did not know I needed papers, I don't carry papers - they'd get wet." she rambled on nervously for a moment before hanging her head a bit..."May I...borrow?" Her hands were in her lap now as she hunched over the bar. She was terribly embarrassed and feeling more awkward by the moment. She didn't feel like exploring any more today...

Raekin perked again, smiling brightly. "Then I will not need the coins or the papers! My food is in the lake...I mean, I filter-feed or eat fish and turtles." Nodding a bit, she takes another big gulp of water. "I would say I would visit here more but...will I always get these strange reactions? I don't imagine you all have ever had a mermaid flop in, but still...I'm not that strange, am I?" Her eyes looked to him, bright and yellow in color. The rims were tainted in an emerald green ring that matched some of the shades in her multi-tone green and blue skin.

Raekin sighed. "Most people don't have x-ray vision to see my insides when they look at me...It'd only be fish guts, anyway." Pushing away from the bar, she puts her feet down on the floor and stands. "It was...nice to meet you..." she said, most of her fins still retracted. With head bowed, she went on over to the door and opened it to let herself out. She braced for the cold wind and started her trek back to the lake.

Raekin slipped in to the bar as quietly as possible, hoping not to be noticed. That, however, would be an impossible task for this mer-folk. Still, she kept her fins in as she walked over to the bar, crossing in front of Neko Saken and Indigo Toyota. A glass of water would do her some good after her trek across land from the lake, so she sat at the bar and ordered it.

Raekin swung her legs back and forth as she sat atop the stool. Her eyes went to the bottles behind the bar before she managed to frown at the remembrance of vodka...She had thought it was water, but it definitely was not. A bit shocked by the sudden greeting, she first turns away to make sure there wasn't someone on the other side of her that Indigo was speaking to. Not seeing anyone there, she faces him and eagerly takes his hand. "Hello!" she said, flashing a fangy smile.

Raekin felt teeth on her leg and -freaked out-. In a matter of seconds, she had hopped up on the bar top and drawn her legs in tight against her chest. She let out a hiss of her own, flashing her fins out in proud display, a show intended to make her seem larger and more threatening. When Indigo spoke to her again, she calmed, but only slightly. Still, she made no move to come down off the bar, looking at her new friend with a frown.

Raekin folds her leg fin over the bite mark before slipping back down onto the stool. It seemed that every one of her visits was going to have some sort of drama over her being a mer-folk, and that, was rather depressing. She just wants to be where the people are...Where she can see, she can see 'em dancin'...Woah. Sorry. Anyway, the fish lady propped her elbows on the bar as she toned down her fins. "Animals should be well trained." she sneered.

Raekin calmly turned on the stool and spoke over Indigo at Saken. "Then stop acting like it." Sliding off the stool, Kin goes over towards the fire after saying to Indigo, "You've got a long way to go. It was nice to meet you." Then, so she could finish the water she carried with her, she took a seat in front of the fire.

Raekin stood there for a moment after opening the door, peering into the bar to make sure there were not nekos this time. That damned cat's bite was itching with discomfort still. Seeing that the coast was clear, the mer-person stepped inside and let the bar close. She was dripping again, every fin perked up from her crown-fins to her calf-fins. Her tentacles that had all been on her back, slid of their own premonition over her shoulders to lay against her chest. Licking her lips, she slowly walked over to the bar as she usually did, sliding up onto the stool and ordering a glass of water.

It was eerily quiet today, and that made Kin a bit nervous. When she turned her head to survey the room, she spotted a pregnant woman by the fire. Smiling softly, she waits for her glass before sliding back off the stool and flopping her way to the fire on webbed feet.

"Excuse me, miss...Is it alright if I sit here and get warmed up?" she asked Kate, giving her friendliest mer-woman smile, complete with fang like teeth. If accepted, she would slide into the seat opposite of the woman and stare into the fire before giving her name. "I'm Raekin...or just Kin if you prefer..."

Raekin chuckled a bit while smoothing her fins down to settle in the chair. "I have that problem a lot here...But really, if they're going to run away, they'll do it immediately." She laughed again while resting her back. "I find it kind of humorous that people of Wing City widely accept all kinds of strange creatures, but shudder at the sight of a mer-person. Maybe they're afraid I'll give them warts." Satisfied with the thought, she chuckled deeply and shook her head before raising her glass to her lips and drinking her water.

Putting the drink down on the side table, she rolls her yellow, green-rimmed eyes back to the young lady. "I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name?...You are with the child, yes? I don't see many pregnant bi-pedals. Most things in the water lay eggs." She then realized that it may have been a bit rude to say that and there was further reason to shut up when a noble came closer to be by the fire. Kin ducked her head a bit but kept her eyes on the man, studying him quietly. Silently she wondered if he would be the type to eat her...

Raekin eyed the man a moment longer before just casting her back towards him and smiling at Katie. "It's nice to meet you, too...I don't mind so much that they think harsh things about me, I'm rather used to not caring about what others -think-. It's their -actions- that disturb me...The staring, the screaming, the running away...It all gets so tiresome."

She gave a brief frown before propping her head in her hand and gazing over at Katie. "I suppose eventually we'll get used to one another. I just wonder which will happen first. Either I'll learn to not be hurt by their actions, or they'll...accept me." Inwardly, she laughed at herself, knowing that the probability of the later was not so great.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I tend to ramble on...Can I get you a glass of water or anything to eat?"

Raekin was actually rather friendly for a creature that most people feared. The truth was, she didn't really pose a threat to anyone. The most dangerous part about her were her teeth that might do some damage to flesh, but even they were so specialized for eating seafood that she wouldn't dream of using them as weapons.

"Water, coming right up!" she said her perky soprano. Hopping up out of her seat, she instinctively opens her wing-fins behind her and takes her new empty glass with her up to the bar. With the bartender's aid, she refilled her glass and got a fresh one with just a little bit of ice in it. With webbed fingers wrapped about the drinks, she carefully strode her way back to the fireplace. Her walk wasn't very graceful and it was more like a human walking around with flippers on than anything, but she had adjusted to land rather nicely. After all, her body came ready to breathe oxygen from the air, she didn't need to learn that.

Raekin blinked a bit as she came back up and Emura was speaking with her new friend. The mer-woman flashed a bright smile while setting both glasses beside Katie. Then, a thought struck her. "Oh, by the stars! I was on my way to the library to return these books before noon!" Then, reaching underneath her skirt-fins, she produces two rather large encyclopedias. How had she been hiding those? Perhaps one wouldn't want to know.

"I'm so sorry, Katie. It was really nice to talk with you and not have either of us scream, but I've got to go return these...Hopefully, I can come back by later today. Thanks again!" And with that, the mer-woman fin-flopped her way out of the bar and to the library.

Raekin was deep in the water a few hundred feet off the coast. She was having fun watching for waves over head and jumping out of their crests. In the clear blue of the untouched water, Kin could see the stirring of a monstrous wave. With the sweeping arm of the wave already touching the shore on the other side of rocky crags from Indigo. The man with the hat would find no reason to be alarmed as he wouldn't even be able to see the wave coming. Using all her fins, Raekin rushed the wave, shooting from the floor up to where the wave was starting to roll. It picked up speed and hurled her body towards those rocks, an action that would mean the end for most surfers. But Kin was far too experienced for that, and just as the wave broke over the stone in a beautiful fountain, she was there at the top, proudly fanning out all her fins.

Raekin had closed her eyes to take in a deep breath of the salty air before looking down at the beach and spotting a friend. "Mr. Toyota!" she called out, waving before pulling herself up on the rock. Careful footing was found to descend and then hop onto the white sands of the beach. Her feet made unique impressions as she flopped her way over to him. Flashing that bright fangy smile. "Do you remember me from the bar? I'm Raekin...You kept a neko from eating me."
