Description

"And so the blind will lead the blind .. "
Negations. The art of negating, countering, dissipating magic. In layman's terms, Negation is the difference between throwing water on a fire to stifle it, and removing all the oxygen in the air from the immediate area. It's more than just curses and countercurses -- it's the stark anti-thesis to the paranormal, to magic.
Every SCD team should have a Negations expert. When facing down highly volatile and deadly curses, it only seems to make sense. A good Negator can undo even the most tightly wound hex, saving the rest of his or her team from harm.
There aren't nearly enough of them, because Negations is an unforgiving study.
Once you get into Negations, there's no turning back. It starts with unlearning everything about magic, and it ends with the subject's senses completely rearranged. To be successful Negator, you have to be quick - almost instantaneous - with your understanding of the forces around you. Sight through eyes is limiting. Makes you dependent on what is there, not what isn't there. For someone to be truly skilled in Negations, it's not entirely uncommon to undergo an operation removing the eyes completely.
This process forces the Negator to rely on heightened sound and magic senses, making them much more effective on the field. It's considered the 'final step' into becoming a true expert. In the United States magical community, someone with no eyes is respected and feared more often than the most powerful mage.
Enter Shadrack Lieffers.
Born in Virginia, raised in the DC area, Shad always had a shrewd understanding of politics both on Capitol Hill, and underneath it. He was interested in joining Congress before joining the SCD -- and all the whole, the thought of Negations never entered his mind.
No SCD workshop rep would dare mention Negations while showcasing at the Crossed Wands University, and yet Shad was an exception. Though the concept itself daunted him, Shad found himself in a special training program by the time he graduated --
-- four months into his SCD Academy years, Shad realized his vision was starting to fade.
However many years later, Shad has lost all sight in his eyes. He is a critical member to the LA Major Cases squad -- receiving gentle pressure from SCD higher ups to undergo that all-too-important operation; resulting in his eyes being removed completely. Despite Shad's skill at Negations, it's a final step that he's wary to take.
Shad Lieffers gave a soft smile. "Thank you!" She said earnestly, taking the bottle and bringing it to her lips. "Now. To start things off. What sort of magic is that choking thing? It's success seems invariable, almost like someone made a trip-set hex and set it on you. But that doesn't apply to sentient beings, and it also would apply to any wards I might have set upon myself."
She drew her eyebrows together in a 'thinking' look that actually made her look like a cute, dark-haired pixie.
"You ARE sentient, yes?"
Shad Lieffers ran a test.
Shad Lieffers came through the door not second later. The man was just a few inches taller than Griff, but as he was mostly elbows and knees, the site of the man did nothing more than raise eyebrows. Shad was dressed smartly this morning (then again, he was always dressed smartly).
He wore sunglasses this morning. The blind man stepped fully into the bar, the low chatter was enough to give him a sense of where things were. Like a bat, the audiotory and magical signals everyone was giving off helped him find where Griff was sitting so stoically, and make his way over.
"Long night?" Shad grinned down at his partner through pitch-tar shades.
"You have no idea." Griff tried lurching to his feet. "All yours, buddy."
"Oh, indeed." Shad grinned. He groped for the chair for just a second, and then fell into it. In one motion he pulled the shades off -- revealing bright and intuitive blue eyes, unfocused and staring somewhere off Griff's shoulder. "I get it a bit easier than you, you know."
Shad Lieffers "That I believe .. " Griff grunted. He tried not to stare at Shad's slack gaze, but it was hard. "You and your fancy-ass Negator magic. What, can you just sleep the entire time and know exactly what's going on?"
"More or less. To an extent. Either that, or I'm just making shit up. So, anything?"
"Nothing at all. Boring as hell. Right now, they're having some sort of debate. That vampire guy and the other girl."
"I can tell you're fascinated."
"Shoot, it's riveting."
Shad would have turned his head to look, but he could already see everything that was going on. He tried to lift his slack gaze, but didn't seem to want to put forth the effort. "Hey -- who'd notice a slender blind man, anyways?"
Shad Lieffers "Blind? Please. You can see things better than I can." Griff shrugged his shoulders, and then rolled them, trying to rid himself of sleep. "There's a hot shower waiting for me at home. This is the finest crap, all of it."
Shad tilted his head to the side. "You don't think waiting at the bar for him is going to be very effective?"
"Of course not. What's the draw? Alcohol? Not like Gambit's has a monopoly on that."
"I believe Liesha said something about the draw of magic for the man."
"That might be very well and true, but he's gotta know we're just parking ourselves here."
"In the past, I've noticed that this man doesn't .. really seem to care who might be waiting for him."
Griff fell into silence. Shad let the older agent have his moment, he twirled the shades on his finger idly as the moment passed.
"You can go now, Griff." Shad said after a bit. "I've got it."
Shad Lieffers "Yeaaaah .. " Griff lurched to his feet and stretched. "You young kids. Wren could probably stay up all night, here, and not even think twice about it. She'd be smiling in the morning to greet me. How the hell did I end up with this shift?"
Shad lifted two fingers to his head in a mock salute as SA Raley-Sinclair headed for the door, and left -- heading back to the LA office.
This left the blind man sitting alone. He leaned back in his seat just slightly, letting his inner 'eye' stretch out over the room.
Shad Lieffers melted to his feet, making his way slowly to the front of the bar. He tapped his fingers on the bar, hearing their echo only slightly. He sensed someone behind the bar --
"Excuse me?" The blind man said to Hellshine. "May I order a drink?"
Shad Lieffers The sudden clamor of someone bursting in through the ceiling of the bar -- sent waves of sight and sound. Shad whipped his head around, feeling coils of energy. As the sound level in the room heightened, so did his clarity in sight.
For a moment, thanks to that racket, Shad was able to 'see' Hellshine and what she looked like. If she was alarmed at the bar suddenly being attacked, the woman didn't seem to show it.
"That .. " Shad reached up, scratched the back of his neck. "Probably didn't happen on Griff's watch."
Shad Lieffers The discordant shriek of the barmaid sent more clarity through Shad's mind. Maybe he didn't want to order anything from her. She had walked away from him, anyways, and gone to stand by the wreckage.
He could make her form out, dimly, the repercussions of her shout still giving him what he needed to know in terms of sight. From the man on the floor, there was a great wave of sight from the plane of his energy level. Shad could see quite clearly now, thanks to the man falling from the sky. Curious.
What would it take to negate him? The blind man let the inner 'eye' roam once more, looking at Vegeshin closely.
Heh. Distractions. Shad was staring straight forward, but the scene behind him was as clear as ever. Liesha probably wouldn't approve.
Shad Lieffers wasn't sure he was 'seeing' this quite right. Was the man who had fallen through the ceiling being kicked?
"Hang on -- " Shad addressed everyone present. He was still staring straight forward, so the spectacle was rather odd. "Don't you think you should be giving him medical attention, instead of hurting him furt -- oh. Sorry."
Having forgotten to turn his head, Shad did so. He wasn't really looking directly at the scene, more off to the side. Did it matter? He could see it clearly, even if his face wasn't pointed in the right direction.
"At least, it seems that way to me. May I help him?"
Shad Lieffers "Oh, I gathered his body wasn't like a humans. The energy coming from both of you is like a beacon, like a lighthouse." Shad shaded his eyes in a metaphoric gesture. "It was quite dimly lit in here before you came crashing through the ceiling. From the standpoint of a blind man, I'd have to say I'm glad you came."
Shad Lieffers shrugged. "I can see now, at least. At first I thought it was just because you were smashing through the ceiling, which isn't the most subtle way to go."
The blind man reached up, and tweaked the sunglasses.
"At any rate, it was nice meeting you. I wish there were more people like you for my sake, but at the same time I feel that mightn't be the best plan." Shad gave a light chuckle.
Shad Lieffers sat next to Doryn at the counter. Although the man seemed to be staring straight ahead, his 'eye' was on the Crow Man to his left.
Doryn was like a brilliant beacon of light to the blind man, and a welcome one at that. Shad drummed his fingers on the wood in a steady cadence. There were details now that he could see, details before that would have been lost.
Like the grains in the wood. With the Crow Man's powerful presence, Shad could feel the grains in the wood. It was an interesting experience.
Why couldn't there be more like this one?
"I think you'd be surprised how many people don't have a lick of medical sense in them .. " The SCD Negator commented, offhand ..
Shad Lieffers "Seems like something they should at least teach in school. Basic Red Cross stuff." It was hard to unlearn, then relearn conversation. Shad tilted his head towards Doryn. "Even I'm certified. Got a little card in my wallet."
The blind man tapped the pocket of his jeans.
Shad Lieffers "Not too hard to guess, as I've got my badge on me." Shad reached and touched the shield, now. He still looked straight ahead. "That resigned tone almost says you expected it. You've spoken to Wren already, I assume?"
Shad Lieffers "She's highly intelligent. Insanely smart. Puts the rest of us to shame." Shad smiled warmly, obviously fond of the young woman. "Anyways, I'm not here to pester you with questions. I'm just enjoying the light."
Shad Lieffers "Oh, of course not." Shad reached up and removed his sunglasses. His eyes were a bright, intuitive blue - but they were unfocused and seemed intent on a spot somewhere above Doryn's head. "You see through your eyes. I see through everything else."
The man rapped his knuckles sharply on the counter. He saw a brief spike of clarity, and then it swirled back to its usual sheen.
"Energy and sound I suppose. You're the most luminescent thing in the room, at the moment. I've never been able to see these before." His hand reached out, touched the grain of the counter in front of him.
"They look the way sound feels."
Shad Lieffers grinned. He slid the glasses back on over his nose.
"Occupational thing. Rather complicated to explain. I'm Shad, by the way."
Shad Lieffers "You're catching on to this whole 'SCD' thing."
Shad Lieffers "Your Exorcists probably don't have a blind agent with great hair, though .. " Shad nodded sagely.
