Zakariyyah Elaraby

"Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Psychology is how teachers learn to teach, children bully each other, and FBI agents obtain confessions. When we meet, your mind becomes a mystery for me to solve."

Elaraby is average height and weight, with dark brown hair combed neatly back, and a receding hairline. He has deep-set, penetrating soft brown eyes, and an aquiline nose. Elaraby has high cheekbones and angled features. He is fair-skinned, so that he can easily pass for Italian or Greek, and wears large square wireframe glasses perched on the bridge of his nose. Elaraby usually dresses the part of the absentminded math teacher, with old collared shirts and faded dress pants, easily blending into his surroundings except in areas where a paleskinned man is the oddity.

Elaraby carries the standard Glock .22, in addition to a notepad and pen, a portable voice recorder, and a razor-thin digital camera. He also has his wallet with driver's license, FBI badge, and a hundred dollars.

History

Zakariyyah Elaraby was raised outside Detroit by moderate parents who left the ultra-conservative Egyptian regime for more open-minded, diverse America. Elaraby was born an American citizen and attended a private school, where he earned excellent grades in all his subjects. After graduating, he won a full scholarship to a state college where he studied Behavioral Science, later earning his doctorate in psychology. His dissertation was on the behavior of serial killers following arrest. While in college, he interned with the FBI as a volunteer intern, and became interested in criminal justice. Zack decided to apply his skills, and became an FBI agent after graduation.

Zack is married to Deborah Kiernan, and they have two adopted daughters from Cambodia. One of his daughters has PDD-NOS, an autism spectrum disorder. They currently live outside Quantico, Virginia. Deborah works as a teacher. Zack has been called upon to testify as an expert witness in several high profile criminal trials, and asked for as a consultant by various law enforcement agencies. He served in Ohio, Nevada, Florida, and Philadelphia, as well as in the Saudi Arabian legal attache, in the organized crime, intelligence, counter-intelligence, and counter-terrorism units.

At this time, he is assigned to the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit in Quantico, Virginia, where he works in investigations involving serial crimes and high profile crimes, often doing work referred to in the private sector as 'criminal profiling'. Most recently, Zack was the keynote speaker at a national law enforcement conference. One of his most high profile cases at this time is the Tahira Ali case; he has also agreed to work with the Wing City Police to spearhead a stalled investigation into the murder of a young boy at a local, popular bar. Most recently, he was asked to perform a psychological evaluation of LDA Special Agent Marlene E. Angel at the request of the Ministry of Defense.

Zakariyyah Elaraby's Story

"I see," Zack said, looking up as McGregor approached them. "I'm sorry, sir," said Zack, "were you seated with this lovely young lady?"

Zakariyyah Elaraby was not normally at Headquarters, but had been called here for the day, at a request sent to the Bureau through the Department of State on behalf of the LDA. It seemed the Americans weren't the only ones who delegated tasks to their allies. Elaraby was dressed today in a dark gray pantsuit, pressed white shirt, and dark cinder tie, a conservative, formal look in order to make himself presentable for their guests, as well as direct attention to his words rather than his appearance.

He had been sitting in a temporarily unoccupied office when he heard the very non-American voice in the hall, rising from his seat as he moved into the hallway, greeting the two women with a formal nod in each of their directions. "Good afternoon," he said, his English impeccable despite his rather non-stereotypically American appearance. Extending his hand, he introduced himself. "Dr. Zakariyyah Elaraby, Behavioral Analysis."

Zakariyyah Elaraby took Claire's hand, his own handshake firm but polite, lasting a bit longer than most people might consider typical, though nothing utterly abnormal. "A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Minister," the behaviorist said in a pleasant tone, his attentive gaze noting the Minister's manner - she seemed somewhat uncomfortable, ill at ease, where she was, perhaps due to the location, or to her dress. The clothes did not seem to be particularly well worn, and the strength of her handshake in concert with her tone of voice suggested a woman capable of carrying her own and handling herself.

Elaraby adjusted his glasses a moment, his attention turning to Marlene, the subject of the evaluation. He had done a few evaluations over the past couple of weeks, of agents who had been referred to Behavioral Analysis. She, on the other hand, seemed impatient, not particularly thrilled about her presence in his temporary office, which was furnishd with an empty filing cabinet along one wall, a desk, and three chairs. Elaraby chose to sit not across from her on the other side of the desk, but next to her. He motioned for Claire to take the seat behind the desk.

Shuffling a few papers, and opening a program on his laptop, Elaraby looked at Marlene. "Good afternoon, Agent Angel. Please state your full name for the record."

Zakariyyah Elaraby glanced over at Claire. "I understand," he said pleasantly, "and I will try my best not to offend; however, given my profession..." He smiled knowingly, though his attention remained almost completely on Marlene. It was unusual for anyone to be present during an evaluation other than the subject and the examiner, almost unheard of, though in this case, Elaraby had willingly gone along with the exception to this rule.

Watching Marlene closely, but not in such a manner as to seem threatening or overbearing - as he often did intentionally, during interrogations - he rested his pen on the paper, asking, "Agent Angel, do you know why you are here today?" blinking curiously at the LDA agent as he spoke.

Zakariyyah Elaraby remained mostly emotionless, maintaining a pleasant, but official expression, and tone of voice. It was important during the interview phase of an evaluation to remain both professional and approachable, and Elaraby was an expert. "Tell me about your current position, Agent Marlene," he said, neither looking away nor blinking when she met his eyes. This too was expected, and normal. After all he was here to record her behavior.

"I am here at the request of your government; this interview is entirely confidential within the parameters of that agreement," Elaraby said, making a small note at the top of the legal notepad in his lap. He glanced over at Claire. "Minister, have I received interim clearance to hear A-1 information?"

Zakariyyah Elaraby nodded. He did not visibly respond to the not so subtle threat, though internally, he mulled it over. Here, he dealt with all manner of sensitive information, and was privy to certain bits of information that even folks as powerful and well connected as the Director himself would not want anyone to know. And yet this foreigner had the audacity to make such a threat. His attention returned to Marlene.

"Tell me about your current duties," Elaraby said, in the same pleasant tone, seemingly unfazed by Marlene's continual escalation of hostility and generally unpleasant demeanor. He poised his pen over his paper, having carefully written in illegible markings that may or may not have even been English during the two women's threats.

Zakariyyah Elaraby tilted his head slightly, watching Marlene as she texted. Raising one eyebrow for a moment, he watched in silence, waiting for Claire's order to have some kind of an effect on Marlene before speaking again. "When did you first become an agent in the LDA?" Elaraby asked, after making another few notes on his pad. The two women clearly had a complex relationship with each other, and the behaviorist made a mental note to inquire about it later.

Blatantly ignoring her remark, Elaraby pressed the point anyway, though he did so in a gentler tone. "Tell me about Darian," he said. Everything was relevant, especially her personal history and relationships with others. If she did not know, she would figure it out soon. The behaviorist's job was to analyze all facets of the interview - both the content of her responses and the manner in which she made them.

Zakariyyah Elaraby stood with Claire, after Marlene had stormed out. "I apologize," he offered, inclining his head. There was more going on here than either woman was telling him, but he would not press the matter further, at least not here. If he were in private practice, he would bring it up at a later session, but as this was an evaluation, her reticence to speak on the matter would be noted. "Asking about such things is routine in psychological evaluations."

Zakariyyah Elaraby watched as Claire left, his hands in his pockets, considering. He would not be so sure of that, of the evaluation being completely over. Although of course, if someone like Claire said it was over, then chances were, he would be left with some other duty to do for the day. Elaraby could hear voices distantly - not distinct words, not over the low tone of conversations in the other offices of the FBI building - but he thought he recognized the same very non-American sounding voices. And he was genuinely sorry he had pushed the matter.

Zakariyyah Elaraby nodded once, in the affirmative to Marlene. So his instincts were correct. There was a complex relationship between these two women, evidently sisters, and this man Darian had had a major impact on Marlene's life... and psychological state. He followed Marlene back inside, taking his seat again next to her as he paused for a moment, flipping to the next page in his notepad. "Tell me about the rest of your family, Agent Angel," he said, seemingly unaffected by the slew of threats.

Zakariyyah Elaraby wrote a few things down; if either woman were to peer at his notepad, they might recognize the names he had written. He turned to his laptop, keying in a few things, which would alter the display on the screen to a series of indecipherable acronyms, some of the notes evidently in Arabic script, before looking back to Marlene. "Can you tell me about your education?" Elaraby asked, pen lying over his pad.

Zakariyyah Elaraby chuckled, adjusting his glasses as he peered through them at Marlene. "A-1 classification on you, yes? The matters discussed in this evaluation are confidential, and I doubt anyone else in this office would be able to read and comprehend those notes." They weren't just in Arabic - they were abbreviations and some obscure initialing of terms as well. Even someone like Natalie Schultz would likely not understand them. "Inexpensive but effective measure to ensure the confidentiality of this interview."

Zakariyyah Elaraby is here, and will drag Ayasha in momentarily.

Zakariyyah Elaraby shrugged. "I always take notes in this manner," he said, resting his pen on the pad for the moment. "But if you prefer them to be written in plain, simple English, I can do that as well. After all, this particular session is rather unorthodox in the first place." Here, the behaviorist looked toward Claire, his expression unreadable in his eyes before he looked back at Marlene. "Can you tell me about school? What sorts of classes you took, what sorts of friends you made? Favorite teachers, academic subject areas, that sort of thing?"

The correct form of address was Agent Elaraby, or Dr. Elaraby, though the behaviorist chose not to correct the Aschen Minister. His own gaze often took on a similar effect as Claire's, particularly when participating in an interrogation, which he was often called on to do; however, during evaluations and most other meetings, he chose to take on a more amiable manner of presenting himself.

He nodded once to Claire, taking his pen up in his hand again as he held it over the page, this time taking notes in plain English, his handwriting neat, the letters evenly spaced, with utilitarian characters lacking embellishments. Elaraby listened without comment, waiting til after Marlene had spoken before speaking. "Was there any particular reason you hated school?" he asked, the question candid, neither accusatory nor pointed, and yet still startlingly routine-seming.

Zakariyyah Elaraby nodded. "Outside of school, and now, outside of your work, what sorts of activities do you do?" Elaraby asked, having written down clearly in list format the things Marlene had said, visible to both women. The screen on the computer changed with a click of the mouse, showing a chart with some cryptic numbers - in normal, perfectly legible numerals - in some of the spaces. The behaviorist watched Marlene closely, though it was not the sort of intimidation tactic he used during interrogations; moreso, it was his observation, an essential part of the evaluation.

Zakariyyah Elaraby blinked a few times at the appearance of the alcohol. "Agent Angel, are you sure you want to be drinking during this interview? I can get a glass of water, a soda, coffee or tea, if you like." Elaraby gestured to the hallway, where, down the hall, was a small break room. He looked at Claire as if to ask her whether she would permit her agent - and sister - to imbibe alcohol during an important evaluation.

Zakariyyah Elaraby leaned back in his seat, watching Marlene through the lens of his glasses for several moments. "Do you date often? Are you in a serious relationship?" he asked, his pen resting over the notepad while the fingers of his other hand rested over the keys of the laptop. He wondered whether Marlene was more devoted, promiscuous, or abstinent, and of course, the line of questioning was quite important.
