Introduction
"My lord," the hooded man hissed, his voice sounding wispy and threatening all at once. The bearded man raised an eyebrow as the hooded man rose.
"Well Jerik? This had better been worth my time." the man growled at the hooded Jerik, shoving his hankercheif violently back into his pocket with a look of disgust.
"Shadrack, my lord, it's the oracle. She has spoken." Jerik growled, an indignacy attached to his tone. Shadrack's eyes widened and he pushed past Jerik, making his way over ot the wooden torture device. Sprawled across it was her hands and feet bound was a strange pale woman with pure white hair that almost came down to her knees. Every now and then she would moan and pull feebley at the device holding her down. Their was a handled attached to a set of gears on the wooden table, and with the extent to how the woman was stretched out it was obvious at what the machine did.
"Move aside!" Shadrack bellowed, sending the men holding the crank scattering. At the sound of his voice the oracle's eyes shot open revealing only pools of pure white. Catching sight of Shadrack she narrowed her eyes and said nothing.
"Tell me your vision oracle. It's your sworn duty to tell the king. Though I hear you've managed to keep this one safe for nearly six years," Shadrack said, regaining his composure as he ran a finger over the cold metal of the crank. If there was anything he loved it was this. The soon to be tortue, the cries of the helpless, and fresh blood. A wry smile crept acrossed his lips as the oracle pursed her lips tighter. Poor thing, she could depict the future but cant tell a lie. "Pity," Shadrack began, his eyes gleaming hungrily as his hand suddenly sprouted fire, the flames relfecting off of the frightened oracles eyes, "you had such beautiful skin."
Screams echoed through the dungeon with the smell of burning flesh soon following after. The oracles legs slowly were being licked up in excruciatingly slow bright blue flames. The only two who seemed to be staring in with a strange hungry desire was Shadrack and his general Jerik. Then as soon as the flames had come they were gone, followed suddenly by Shadrack's hand's touching the burned legs that were pouring blood onto the stone floor. In seconds the skin was healed, but the oracle continued to breath sharply and moan from the old pain. When she finally was able to speak again she swallowed roughly, turning her fearfilled eyes towards the king and whispering, "A boy was born in the town of Feinlore, a mage like yourself. He will be your downfall." Silence filled the room after that, followed by Shadrack slowly turning to Jerik with a paled face.
"You fool," he whispered, shakin his head as one of his fingers swirled with black. He slowly touched it to the woman's heart and suddenly the veins in her body slowly began to fill black. She gasped, her body becoming rigid as her eyes filled with the blackness. Her body then suddenly relaxed, one last breath releasing from her lips as her black eyes stared off into the darkness. Turning back from her Shadrack faced his general, "Come, Jerkin," he said shortly.
"While oracle's predictions won't always come true I won't take any chances," Shadrack began, his eyes flashing dangerously as they climbed the stairs. He had waited to long as the advisor of the fool of the man some men had called king. People mourned when the old man unexpectidly died, but they happily handed the throne to Shadrack. Since then he slowly gained the humans favor and grew them up against anything magic. Eventually he convinced them to war, and for the last fifteen years he had succeeded. He was convinced he had wiped out all the remaining mages but apparently one bloodline had escaped. He frowned at this. Perhaps it was time to take the next step in his war. He stopped abruptly at a step and looked back at his general, his eyes flashing madly again. "I have a treat for you Jerik," he began, his pale face regaining some cover. Jerik gave a hiss of delight, kneeling at his kings feet. "You will go and destroy the town of Feinlore. I want it completely wiped out by your means; no survivors." Shadrack finished, smiling to himself as Jerik gave a cackle. "I will my lord," the general began, slowly lowering his hood. The face beneath was covered in thick black scaly skin. There was no nose, but he had long pointed ears like on an elf and an abnormally long mouth. As he slowly smield to his king he revealed thousands of tiny long pointed teeth, and from his head his hair fell down long and black, constantly moving like smoke. Bright red eyes flashed up at his lord happily as he kissed his feet. This is why his kind joined him. Never before could they feast in this kind of magnitude.
"There will be nothing but ashes by the time I am finished."
Rules
I am only looking for one maybe two role play buddies. I like to keep my role plays small. The older sister is my character. The little boy, being a child, is only a sub-character. Basically, I am looking for good-doing characters interested in helping the boy. You can make it your own though. Is your character foretold by an oracle to protect the boy? Is your character only interested in a reward for turning the boy over to Shadrack? How does your character get mixed up in the mess?
I'd like to think of my plot as merely a jumping-off point. We can take this role play in any direction we want to. I hope we get really in depth. I am interested in a role play buddy who: adds to the plot (don't be afraid to make it your own) and keeps it moving (I will too, but I dislike getting stuck being the only one doing it), is original, and advanced.

OOC Notes
The sun rose over the hilly landscape laden with trees, though not dense enough to be considered an actual forest. Their location was rather on the outskirts of the ever-expanding Nedren Forest. Nedren Forest was the largest forest in the land. Because of its size, Shadrack was having a difficult time securing it as his own. Not to mention, the many magical creatures that resided within it saw fit to make it difficult for his soldiers to pass through unscathed, or at all. This was not common knowledge, though. Shadrack kept this information to himself. He would show no signs of weakness.
There was a mirror in their room. Rinera stood in front of it. She had not looked at herself in months. She looked pale and miserable, her eyes showing that she had seen much more than a twenty year old woman was intended to. She took down the tie from her straight brown hair and redid it. It was odd to see herself in a man's clothes. She tucked her over-sized creme colored shirt into her trousers. It was no wonder the inn keeper had given her such an odd look when she and Tristian entered the previous night. Had Rinera seen a woman her own age in such clothes, she would have been confused as well. Though siblings, the resemblance between Rinera and her brother ended with their green eyes. Tristian had curly, shaggy, blonde hair. Being a six-year-old, he was always in search of fun. Even with his older sister constantly angry with him for no reason at all and despite the loss of his former life, his spirits were always in joy.
Rinera grabbed her sack and slunk it over her shoulder, then grabbed her brother's wrist exited the room. Tristian knew better than to protest in any way about being dragged about no different from Rinera's sack. He had learned months ago that Rinera was in charge and that she refused to listen to anyone. Somewhere inside him, Tristian knew that he could revolt against his sister, create sparks from his fingertips to keep her at bay, but for some reason he did not. Most other young boys with his power would have. For now, Rinera had forbidden her brother from using any type of magic without her say. She would always tell him in her harsh tone, "Someone could always be watching, waiting to take you away from me. Is that what you want?" Sometimes, it was exactly what he wanted.
OOC Notes
He barely registered the serving woman as she asked if he wanted his drink refilled. Shaking his head, he quickly finished his ham-steak and eggs. He had places to be, and couldn't waste his time dallying around here. He was going to meet his sister, and the small band of rebels she associated with, in the Nedren Forest. He always tried to go see her once a month. She was the only family he had left. He also gave her a large portion of his earnings. He knew he gave her more than she needed. Her movement supplied her and her little girl with all she needed, and she undoubtedly gave most of the money he gave her to the movement, but she was his sister, and he wanted to help her all he could.
Thinking of his sister and niece, he could help but feeling anger. Not at them, he loved both of them tremendously, but at Shadrack. At what he had done to them. She had been 19 when the war started, a year older than himself. She was only a few months away from being married. She had been so excited, but that excitement had left when Shadrack's army invaded. Her fiance had been forced to join the fight, and had been killed early in the conflict. Her and the rest of the family and become refugees, running for their lives, but they couldn't run fast enough. They had been eventually caught, the family had been murded, and his sister raped and left for dead. Tarren had found her a few days later. Their country had fallen and they had ran away from the death and horror together eventually , reaching the Nedren Forest. There they had joined a group of refugees and disidents hiding deep in the forest, fighting Shadrack the best they could waiting for the day he could be overthrown. There Tarren's sister was able to start a new life, giving birth to her first child, concieved from her rape.
Tarren shook his head and stood up. He was a man of action, and this reminiscing was doing nothing. He slapped the coins for his meal on the table, grabbed his sword and pack, and left for the stables to saddle his horse. On his way out he caught sight of a pretty young women, about his age, dressed in men's breaches and an oversized shirt, dragging a young boy behind her, leaving the inn. Just looking at them, he could tell they had been through hard times. In a time past, a lifetime ago, Tarren, might have smiled at the girl, she really was pretty, but he just looked at her curiously with his hard, brown eyes as he went to the stable.
OOC Notes
Even though Rinera believed they had made it out the moment she exited the inn, she continued to walk swiftly past the inn and onward past the stables. She glanced over at the stables, mainly to dwell on how much easier her travels would be if only she had a horse as she often did on their long travels. She took note of the man in the stables and met his eyes for less than a moment before she turned away and continued to trudge forward. It was at this point that the door of the inn opened and the inn keeper poked his head out, finding his mark very quickly. Though he was an older man with a big belly, he made haste once he found his target. He wanted his money.
OOC Notes
Turning his head, Tarren again caught sight of the women and child rushing away from the inn. Something clicked in Tarren's mind. He'd have been willing to bet she hadn't payed for the last half of their stay. But their clothes were obviously travelworn, and the woman's face had the look of someone who had been traveling for some time with little rest. "Serves the inn keeper right, asking for half in the morning instead of all the first day." Tarren muttered. He would have been suprised if he hadn't lost a fair amount of money from travelers leaving in the night or early morning to avoid the last half of the biil.
"Inn keeper," Tarren said loudly, causing the rotund man to lurch to a stop. He turned to look at Tarren, obviously not happy about being stopped in pursuit of his quarry. "I seem to have forgotten to pay my other half of my stay. I'm glad you came out to remind me before I left."
Tarren fished in the purse on his belt for the coin to pay for the last of a visit. The inn keeper gave a quick glance at the retreating backs of the woman and boy, the ones he rightfuly thought hadn't payed, but in the end it didn't matter who the money came from as long as he got payed. "Yes, yes. Just don't let it happen again," He said sharply, taking the money from Tarren and returning to his inn. He would hate it if anyone else had used this moment to try to escape without paying as well.
Finishing tying his pack to his horse, Tarren mounted, urging his horse into a trot, following the other two travelers, who also happened to be going the same direction as himself. He slowed to a walk as he pulled abreast of the two, giving them another look, but continuing to ride in silence.
OOC Notes
Rinera made it a point not to glance backwards at the stranger and the inn keeper; it would only slow her down. Rinera did hear the hoof fallings of a horse behind her, but that was not the first time someone had passed them on a trail. She kept her head forward, as well as her quick pace. Rinera never thought for an instant that that the sound of the hooves would slow down as it came closer, but it did. She looked up as the man and the horse fell in step with them. It would not matter now quickly she and Tristian walked now; he was on a horse. She stared at the man for a moment, incredulous at what he was doing. No one had ever simply came up aside of them like this. Rinera did not take kindly to any strangers, but she was at a loss for words. The man was silent and he, seemingly, was not causing them any harm. What was he doing then? Did he know who they were? Was he a bounty hunter trying to take her brother? Instinctively, Rinera pulled Tristian to the other side of her and pushed him somewhat behind her, eying the man with caution.
Tristian viewed the man very differently. He did not think the same way Rinera did. He viewed nearly everyone as a friend. Instinctively, and mostly because of his powers, he could sense the aura of others, meaning he could tell whether they wished him harm or good. He had tried to tell his older sister about this once, but she did not trust his senses over her own. But it was her senses that left him lonely and often sad. Tristian looked up at the back of his older sister's head, feeling daring all of the sudden. He bit his lip for a moment, then decided to act. Quickly, he shook his sister's hand off of his wrist and ran behind her to her other side where he exclaimed, "Hello! I am Tristian. That's my sister. Her name's-" He was abruptly cut off and Rinera seized his wrist once more and yanked him back to the other side of her.
"Quiet, Tristian," she muttered harshly at the six-year-old.
OOC Notes
Excitement was muffled by a new question. Who was the man? None who had seen the girl mentioned a man travelling with her, but Adriac watched as the man rode up to the two and then matched their pace. As an act of caution, he quietly pulled the bow from his back and let an arrow into it loosely. The half elf had come too far to watch the mage child die in front of him, as so many others had in the past. An image of the mages he had failed to protect flashed in his mind and gripped his heart tightly until he dismissed them with the calm concentration of the rushing adrenaline as a fight seemed very possible.
(sorry this is short, but there wasn't much to say at this point)
OOC Notes
"Hello! I am Tristian. That's my sister. Her name's-" The boy said with great enthusiasm, darting from his sister's grasp before. He was cut off as his sister grabbed him again, pulling him back to her other side.
"Well, Tristian, my name is Tarren." He said warmly, giving what he hoped was a friendly smile. He wasn't used to smiling or being warm towards people. He looked at the sister. “It would only be fair for you to introduce yourself to the one who paid for the rest of your bill. I can guarantee that I mean you no harm. I merely wish to help you, if you will take. And I'm sure you wouldn't mind having experienced traveling with you through the Nedren Forest. I can tell you from experience that the forest's inhabitants aren't very welcoming of strangers.”
OOC Notes
"Her name's Rinera!" Tristian piped in, peeking out behind his sister once more, though still within her grip. Rinera looked to her brother, shocked at his behavior. He never acted in this manner; Tristian always did what Rinera told him to. His defiance was surprising. She seemed at a loss for words when her brother whispered to her, smiling, "It's all right, Rin, he's good. I can tell." Rinera hardly knew how to react. Momentarily, her mouth hung open as she tried to understand what her brother was trying to do. The answer was actually very simple: he needed friends, other companionship than his overbearing sister. Rinera, of course, did not consider this and soon found her words to reply, "No, Tristian. Just be quiet," before she turned and spoke to Tarren, "I'll thank you to move along."

"It would be a pity for a woman as pretty as you to get torn apart by the beasts of the forest because of your stubborness, but I refuse to see a child be led into the jaws of death by a headstrong woman who refuses to see reason. If you are looking for a place to hide, I have contacts in the forest who would be willing to hide you. If you are just looking to use the forest as a shortcut, I will see you safely through." Tarren gave her a stubborn stare before grabbing his sword with both hands, pulling it out of its scabbard, and holding it up in front of him. "I swear upon my sword that I mean you no harm. I only wish to see you to safety." It was a simple and straight forward oath, with no flowery speach like some prefered, but for a warrior like him it was the most solemn oath he could make. He would rather die before breaking that oath, for breaking it would mean he had know honor. Hopefully if anything would put Rinera at ease, it would be that. Tarren kept his sword out and upright, guiding his horse skillfully with his knees, as he waited for a response.
OOC Notes
"Who says we need to hide?" Rinera temporarily lost her composure and her voice cracked, but she quickly regained it as her voice became harsh once more, "And people don't just do something unless they want something else in return. I have nothing to give you, so you truly are wasting your time if you're going to follow us."
OOC Notes
No chances could be taken with the future of the world. Adriac only wished that it had been this easy to protect the mages who fell to Shadrack and his armies.
OOC Notes
"Well, well, well what do we have here? A lost traveler?" a voice said from behind Jundaya, he smiled and said back, "Actually yes, I am. Could you possibly help me? I'd be happy to reward you." He turned around and faced the new strangers with his smile. "You don't look very mad to be lost," the man laughed, "but your smile just gives me this warm feeling inside, and just gives me this sense of madness. It's so great, I think I'll put you on a plaque so I can have this feeling everyday." At that last remark, he pulled out a giant ax from his back, and his followers pulled out swords from their sheaths. Jundaya still smiled, "you know.. you shouldn't let my smile deceive you. But since I'm short on time, I can't have any fun with you. Now if you would point me in the right directions I'll be on my way."
At this the man laughed, "You just made my day there, by the way I'm Utrin. I'm the 'protector', if you may, of this forest. And as the protector, I have to charge a fee. And the fee would be, oh maybe that there armor you have." He reached for it, but with a quick push off his foot, he propelled away from Utrin and began to run. "I see the forest is hindering my process, I'll just have to find my own way out."
OOC Notes
"C'mon, Tristian," Rinera said and the two took off running off of the path and into the Nedren Forest. "Wait!" Tristian protested, but he was no match for his sister's strength and was pulled along. It was harder to move quickly here. The trees were dense and the shorter growths caught both Rinera and Tristian's clothes and feet and Rinera's sack made running a bit awkward, but she refused to let them stop. Tristian did not give up, "Tarren needs our help! Rin, please stop, please!" Rinera was too out of breath to properly scold him, but her actions gave herself away: she would not stop.
ooc: It's short, but there's only so much you can say when things are moving quickly.
OOC Notes
Has he turned to meet the attacker, he saw Rinera dash for the forest, dragging Tristian along with her. "Fool woman," He muttered under his breath. Looking at his new foe, with an arrow nocked at pointed at Tarren, Tarren had two choices. He could stay his ground and face this man, leaving Rinera and Tristian to face the dangers of the forest alone, or he could take off after the two, leaving his back to his enemy, but hopefully he would still be able to look after Rinera and Tristian. It never even crossed his mind that the man might be friendly.
Again turning Thunderer, Tarren smoothly sheathed his sword and took off after Rinera and Tristian, crouching low over the saddle, hoping to avoid anymore arrows. They had managed to cover a fair amount of ground in his moment of distraction, they were now in the cover of the forest. Tarren followed them down the trail, having to slow as he entered the forest.
OOC Notes
Adriac shouted out, "You will not harm the mage child!" and then hopped from the saddle and rolled into the forest floor before. The horse, Farrah, continued to follow the man and Adriac hoped the sound of thundering hooves would keep him from noticing what Adria had done. Now Adriac cut a straight path to try and intercept Rinera and Tristian and then fight off their supposed attacker.
OOC Notes
"No!" The boy screamed at the top of his small voice, while at the same time sending a series of tiny thunderbolts from the tips of his fingers to his sister's skin. She pulled away from the boy reflexively, dropping her sack and holding the hand Tristian shocked with magic with the other hand. Tristian's fit was not finished here, "You never listen to me! I'm right and you're always wrong! I don't care if you don't believe me and I don't care if you're mad at me because it's my fault that..." his anger seemingly trailed off because he could not bring himself to admit the truth, which was that it was his fault that Feinlore was destroyed and that his parents along with everyone else he ever knew was dead.
For the first time, there was a look of sympathy in Rinera's face. He was right. She was angry with him for the reason he mentioned, though there were other reasons too, and took it out on him every day. She never realized that Tristian could be so inquisitive. He was so young. Then again, he was a prodigy. Instantly, she felt guilty for every one of her actions that brought them to this moment, where her powerful six-year-old brother stood before her in anger and tears. Rinera was so focused on that feeling that she hardly noticed that the wind had suddenly picked up when she made the mistake of stepping forward and reaching out her hand, "Tristian, it's no-" but she never got the chance to finish.
"You be quiet!" the boy screamed in an ironic way, as it was usually Rinera telling Tristian to keep his mouth shut. As he spoke, he thrust his hands out in front of him and a great gust of wind threw Rinera into the air and then onto her back. She felt the air stolen from her lungs as she hit the ground feeling like someone had punched her gut. She lay there for a moment trying to will the air back into her. By the time Rinera found her breath and began to sit up, Tristian was nowhere within her sights.
Tristian saw what he did to his sister. His anger melted away when he saw her laying there on the ground and it was replaced with fear. 'What did I do?' he thought and before he could answer his question or have another thought, his legs took him running off of the path and the dense underbrush of the forest. He could run through rather easily because of his size.
OOC Notes
"You stay here," Tarren ordered sharply in a tone that was obviously used to being obeyed. Taking off after the now barely visible form of Tristian, Tarren's training was kicking in. He fully expexted Rinera to do as she was told, but he didn't have time to make sure she did. Unsheathing his sword, he took off after Tristian. He just had to hope that the pursuer would leave Rinera alone and try to follow Tristian. That and that he would get there first.
"Tristian!" Tarren shouted, "Stop! You're in danger!"
OOC Notes
The fate of the world rested on what happened in these moments.
OOC Notes
"How do you know of us?" she asked Adriac in an exasperated voice, looking to where Tarren had taken off. In her mind, she was still deciding whether to run after he and her brother. Normally, it would not have been a decision. It would have been something she simply did. It was as if she was actually beginning to trust that Tarren was who he said he was and that he was going to bring her brother back to her, especially when she heard the way he yelled after Tristian. But Rinera had to focus on where she was. Adriac knew who they were. Just as with Tarren, she did not want to believe that he was there to help, but if he had meant her harm, there was no reason for him to disguise himself. Could he really have been there to help?
Meanwhile, Tristian did not stop running. He heard someone calling his name, but he could not figure out who it was. His vision blurred from his tears, it was no surprise when his foot became caught in a tree root sticking up from the ground and he fell, whacking his head on a rock. The tears, the anger, and especially the magic had exhausted him, but it took the force of a rock cutting Tristian's forehead open to make him black out.
OOC Notes
OOC Notes
Going back to Rinera, he was glad to see she had stayed where she was, Tarren found an unpleasant suprise. The man that had attacked them at the village was there. He didn't have any weapons out, but that didn't matter. It didn't take long for a trained warrior to draw one. Walking over to Rinera, making sure he kept facing the new comer, he lay Tristian down on the ground. "He fell and hit his head. He should be alright, but I think we should move as little as possible until he wakes up. And you," He said, addressing the newcomer, "If you think I'm going to let you take the boy or his sister without a fight, you are sorely mistaken."
OOC Notes
At that moment Tarren returned with Tristain. Adriac did not move to draw his sword, and did not reply to the threat. If Rinera trusted him, she would end the confrontation herself. If not, Adriac would leave and try to protect Tristain from the shadows.
OOC Notes
"Could others know of us, too?" Rinera asked in the same solemn tone. it was obvious what she was really asking though: Does Shadrack know that we're alive? It made sense. If one person had figured out where they were and followed them, why should not others be able to?
OOC Notes
What if she didn't trust him? Something told Adriac that she did, but he knew that he needed a plan if she did not. The only important one here was the child, Tristian. It seemed an evil thing to do, but Adriac could easily take the child and leave..hiding away and defending him until he was old enough to stand up against Shadrack and his armies. Could Adriac do something so cruel, to destroy the life of a young child, even if it meant saving the world from a tyrant? He could, Adriac had struggled with hard decisions and failed to act too many times before, costing the lives of far too many. The decision was made, but hopefully the half elf would never have to act on it.
