The Spirit World: In Medias Res

The Spirit World: In Medias Res

0 INK

The Spirit World is a dimension that lies between Heaven and Hell. It serves as the 'second life' of human beings after their death. Though humans, while alive, are oblivious to this world, it plays a major role in the balance of life.

1,161 readers have visited The Spirit World: In Medias Res since ChevalAuChocolat created it.

Introduction

Current time frame: Modern

During the early days, the Spirit World only existed to serve one purpose: to provide a home for humans in the afterlife. But during those days, the world was cloudy and murky, with souls walking to and fro like mindless creatures. The purple skies where neither day nor night existed would always add to the depressing ambiance of the world. Once a soul entered the Spirit World, he lived on without memories from his past life, his entire being wiped out. Yes, the souls were given second lives but they didn't seem to be enjoyable and worthwhile chances.
The world belonged to no one. Its inhabitants never knew of heaven nor hell. Until one day, the Devil himself tried claiming the world to create a greater extension of his kingdom. The Spirit World was in disarray. When the angels came to save the land, heaven and hell clashed in the Spirit World. The innocent, unwary souls hid beneath the ground, afraid of what the outcome of the war may be.
They hid for years in the dark abyss, not daring to come out and see if the war had passed. For the first time in who knows how long, a soul had recovered her memories from the experienced dread and longing in the darkness. The soul named Megan remembered how to pray, and she did. Her prayer brought strength to her fellow souls and this urged them to pray all together for a long time. The phenomenon gave strength to the angels and the Devil and his minions surrendered as they retreated to the safety of their fiery abode.
After their years of prayer, the souls gained enough strength and courage to crawl out of the ground and into the surface of their world. To their surprise, the skies were dyed a bright blue and the suns rays burst forth to welcome them to a new era of living. Megan was given the name Lux by the angels and gave her the decision to stay with the Spirit World or come with them to heaven. Lux agreed to go with them but asked for a wish. Something for the benefit of her people.
Three worthy souls were given the privilege to control life in the Spirit World by three angels who merged with them. The privilege came with heavy responsibilities that the three had to face, but they kept their vows to the angels and Lux as a token of gratitude for sharing to the Spirit World the power of prayer. These three were known as the Life Sorcerers.
One soul was given the name Sanoa and the role 'Giver of Lives'. She had the ability to create life in different forms. One was named Tarvita, the 'Taker of Lives'. Her duty is to put a soul to its final resting place, either heaven or hell, depending on its way of life in both the Spirit and Human world. The last soul was Eri, the 'Prolonger of Lives'. She could extend or lessen the life span of a soul and leave the rest of the work to the Taker of Lives. Once a soul has reached the end of its life span, Eri may choose whether to extend it and let it live for a longer time until it surrenders to the Taker, lessen it, or cut its life span, which will result to an automatic disposal by the Taker. Though, the last option is only applicable to those who have done the Spirit World wrong. For a long time, Eri never cut one's life span short. There was no trace of evil ever since the Devil left. Plus, it was thanks to Eri that some beings existed to be immortals.
Many mores years passed and the Spirit World flourished with life. It was almost like the Human World, only much more special. Beings that could never exist in the Human World ran about in tall grass, sorcerers and alchemists made their own discoveries and The Sanctuary was established with the help of the Life Sorcerers, who also became the head mentors. The citizens were taught different things, from summoning to elemental magic. Dark magic was also used for good purposes, like alchemy and summoning.
It wasn't long before a deranged soul that died from a demonic possession entered the Spirit World and wrought havoc among dark magic users, absorbing their powers and using them to turn against the Life Sorcerers. The three of them banished the soul and blamed hell for it. Dark magic became forbidden and everyone who used it had to shift to the use of light magic. It was, indeed, hell's doing. The Devil's, to be precise. It was also on that day when the three sorcerers assigned someone to be the Guardian of the Gateway between the Spirit World and Human World. A soul named Shilo. It was because of this decision that some unfortunate souls still wandered the Human World. Ghosts, as they are called by humans.
Peace and joy reigned over the world for years and years. But all good things must, unfortunately, come to an end.
On one fateful day, a demon from hell, disguised as an old woman's soul, entered the Spirit World. By using hypnosis, the demon secretly gathered his own hoard of souls and proceeded to the forest where all forms of dark magic were locked away by the three sorcerers. With the help of the Devil's power, the demon unlocked the chamber and cursed the dark magic stored within it, thus creating new forms of magic: Necromancy, Silencing and Dark Healing.
Necromancy was known to be a skill that allowed the user to summon souls from hell. Once necromancy has been performed, the resurrected souls will be known as the Undead. Silencing became an ability that can absorb the strength of other beings and whoever wields the spell may make use of the gained strength. Since light magic kills the demonic entities, Dark Healing was created to make use of dark magic instead to heal the wounded. The demon's small army gained these powers and they were transported by a portal provided by the Devil. The remains of tainted dark magic scattered across the forest, turning it into the Dark Forest.
News of the unknown magic spread across the land and everyone feared its power, including the Three Life Sorcerers. No one set foot on the Dark Forest since then.
The three sorcerers, with the aid of the Sanctuary Healer, doubled their efforts in mentoring the spellcasters, alchemists, apprentices, Alice witches and healers, incase they would have to engage in war against the demonic forces.
And so, it happened.
War broke out between the two worlds. Through the span of time when everyone in the Spirit World was busy preparing for the anticipated war, the Devil's army was growing. The demonic forces grew powerful enough to cast a barrier over the Spirit World, preventing any being from outside it to enter and interfere with the war. The prayer provided by the angels made no difference.
When all hope seemed lost, Eri made a choice. Thinking she was the cause of immortality, she thought of sacrificing herself to get rid of it. Turning her own people into mortals could be a huge toll to pay, but it could also help defeat the Devil's minions, since most of them came from the Spirit World originally. Before the entire Sanctuary collapsed, she entered the Sacred Chamber and sacrificed her own life through a forbidden spell. The old chamber where the dark magic used to be stored became her tomb. Everytime someone from the Devil's army had died, they would be sent to the same chamber and be sealed there for all eternity. Eri's sacrifice worked. It was thanks to the alchemists that the undead were defeated. The Devil's last resort failed and he fled back to his own kingdom, the barrier finally shattering by itself.
After the war, only two sorcerers remained. The angels were unable to retrieve Eri's soul from the chamber. If they tried breaking the seal, they could accidentally release their foes. There was nothing more to do but move on.

The AU's Character Types

Spirit World:
Spellcasters - They can choose from a wide variety of spells. Examples of these are elemental spells, dark magic and light magic.
Alchemists - They can create machinery, magic-based weapons, potions and repair stuff. They are masters of science.
Alice Witches - These are spellcasters who specialize in earth magic and have special skills that ordinary spellcasters don't have. These skills may include basic summoning of forest animals and insects, and Green Thumb magic, or the ability to make plants grow. They are known to be the closest companions of mother nature. They are also capable of turning into pixies.
Healers - These may be in the form of apprentices or mentors. They are the only beings in the spirit world who are capable of healing wounds and lifting curses. Curse lifting may fail, depending on how strong the curse is. Healing has no limits. The power of these beings are provided by the Sacred Healer of the Sanctuary.
Summoners - They have the ability to summon mythical beasts from inside or outside the Spirit World, depending on the spell. Usually, they carry books with them and study diligently. One small mistake with a spell and the summoner could bring out a beast from hell or a different dimension.
Gypsy Sorcerers - This category consists mostly of women. They use hypnotizing magic to defend themselves. They are not much of the offensive type and tend to scarper away when in battle. Though, they are masters of seduction, or better yet, hypnosis-causing dances.
Ranger Mentors - They are the rogues of the Spirit World, the only ones who study hand-to-hand and melee combat. There are very few ranger mentors in the Sanctuary since the spiritual state of the inhabitants are weak when it comes to physical strength. Still, these mentors never fail to teach apprentices how to hunt for food.
Scouts - This is the term used to distinguish apprentices under the Ranger mentors from others.
Apprentices (General Term) - They are beginners who study Alchemy, Spellcasting, Summoning or Healing in the Sacred Sanctuary.
Mentors (General Term) - They are the ones who teach the major subjects. Ranger mentors are not included in this category.
Commoners - These are the citizens who know very little knowledge or none at all about magic and just live simple, happy lives in the Spirit World. They may come in forms of street entertainers, ordinary families, merchants, beggars, etc.

Hell:
(NOTE: Every character in this category is considered an ex-inhabitant of the Spirit World except for the Demons and the Devil. They have only one weakness and that is light/holy magic. Some can resist it, but still have limits to how much holy power their magic can deflect.)
Demons - They come in different shapes and sizes, with blood red skin and horns. Obviously, they're spawns of the Devil. They're basically souls sent to hell covered in molten rock as flesh. They use psychic abilities as offense and defense mechanisms.
Necromancers - They are capable of summoning souls from hell. Once summoned, they are called the Undead.
Silencers - They have the ability to absorb the strength of other beings and may make use of the gained strength.
Dark Healers - These are originally healers from the Spirit World that weild tainted healing powers. They can only heal beings from hell.

Heaven:
Angels - These are the beings who live in heaven. They only come to the Spirit World if there is a war. Their tasks are mainly focused on the Human World. They also monitor every being in the Human World to help Tarvita make her final decision.

Important Characters: (Will probably be NPCed)
Sacred Healer - A virgin woman may take the place of the current Sacred Healer if she passes away. The Sacred Healer is the source of all healing magic. She is considered the chief healer of the Spirit World.
The Devil - He can create demons, create portals for any dimension and use cursed dark magic as an offense mechanism. He is usually lazy and will flee from battle if he is on the verge of losing.
Lux - Also known as Megan, she is the first soul to introduce prayer to the Spirit World. She is praised as a goddess by the citizens of the Spirit World. Though she barely interferes with the lives of the ordinary inhabitants, she plays a major role in the lives of the Three Life Sorcerers. She was given a place in heaven after the war between heaven and hell in the Spirit World.
Sanoa - She is the Giver of Lives. She has the ability to create different forms of life, like plants and animals. She cannot create souls nor steal one from the Human World for it to become a being of the Spirit World. An example of her skill is recreating the animals slain by Rangers and/or Scouts for food, and regrowing the plants used for shelter, clothing, alchemy, and others. She may also combine a soul with a plant or animal.
Eri - She is the Prolonger of Lives. Though she is able to extend the lifespan of souls, she has no control over the lifespan of plants. That job belongs to the witch Alice. (Her complete set of abilities are stated in the story of the Spirit World as stated above.)
Tarvita - She is the Taker of Lives. She chooses the final resting place for a soul once it confronts her, a sign that the lifespan Eri had given it has reached its limit. She seeks the help of angels to learn about the soul's previous life in the Human World and judges whether it goes to Heaven or Hell.
Shilo - The soul assigned to watch over the Gateway between the Spirit World and the Human World. She has bright, yellow hair, and wears an outfit similar to a Miko's. She allows souls to enter the Spirit World from the Human World. She may also reject them and leave them with a choice of immediate hell or to stay in the Human World as a wandering, restless soul. Heaven is only open to those who have lived in both Spirit and Human Worlds.
Nature Witch Alice - A soul named Alice, due to her intense love for nature, asked Sanoa if she could be turned into a great tree and guard over the forests. Pleased, Sanoa granted her wish and turned her into the desired plant. Alice's roots are considered to be channels of life for the forests of the Spirit World. As long as she is not cut down, the forests will remain alive. The Dark Forest is an exception though because of the great power enveloping the seal of Eri's tomb. Only the Life Sorcerers are able to withstand its awesome power. Alice's roots nourish the soil of the land with sweet fruit-bearing trees, edible herbs and magical plants. She is strictly watched over by Sanoa, in case anyone should attempt to cut her down.
