Introduction

Welcome to Zeta Complex, Humans! You have been chosen to participate in the Ultrathon, a flagship reality entertainment programme! Or was it an ancient spiritual ritual? Or perhaps scientific research? Either way, it is a great honour to be chosen! You are free to decline to participate, but you'll have to remain on the compound for the duration of the Ultrathon, during which time you may browse our array of shops and services! However, everything must be paid for in U-tokens, which can, you guessed it, only be obtained through participating in challenges. Since that includes food, some level of participation is highly recommended!
Challenges come in many forms! Some will be combat-based, some will be team exercises, and some will involve voting for or against your fellow selectees. Participation can have great rewards, but also great risks!
That brings us to the best part: to make things a little more interesting, you won't have to rely entirely on your pathetic human capabilities! While you were unconscious, your genome has been modified to include the O-Chromosome, which we can use to safely and conveniently transfer powers and attributes between your person and our central computer.
Good luck! But remember, luck isn't everything...

This RP is inspired by this thread on the GitP forums, where people generate random superpowers and say what they'd do with them. This is a bit more advanced though, with a story and character interaction.
As a player, creativity is essential and a sense of humour is definitely a plus, although drama and strategy will hopefully play a part in the story too. Teamwork and Machiavellian scheming are both encouraged, and some players might want to make use of PMs to coordinate with other players.
To enter, just supply a character application with a realistic human character. They can be of any age, background or temperament, and anyone from a completely normal average Joe to some superstar athlete or hitman, as long as their abilities are plausibly within the range of natural human capability. Don't worry too much about making them balanced or optimized, as long as you think you can play them in an interesting way. They can even be disabled if you like. Often the rounds will be designed to turn the normal rules on their head, and you might find that a weakness can be an advantage!
When your character is accepted, I'll assign them a random power from superpowerlist.com. I might clarify these powers with certain limits or conditions, or modify them slightly to make them more consistent. If you're not sure if a use of a power is 'legal', ask me.
There will be opportunities to trade and acquire more powers later on, but it's recommended you get to know your starting power well. Even the most 'useless' powers can have surprising applications!
I'll be gradually introducing in-game 'rules' and elements of the story as we go. I'll keep a record of the important points here.
Tournament Information:
1) You are trapped in a complex of rooms and machinery that mostly resembles a high-tech shopping mall. There are no exits. There are no living beings except you and the other kidnapped humans, and a few plants.
2) There are a range of automated 'shops' that dispense all kinds of goods and services in exchange for U-tokens, the complex's currency. Most of the interfaces have a holographic display, but are operated with a psychic link established by touch.
3) The main rooms of the complex are connected by corridors and escalators. There's also a system of tubes through which high-speed single-person pods travel between locations, called hypertubes. It looks like a lot of the complex is currently inaccessible.
4) Each person has their own room in the complex, resembling a hotel room. This is only accessible by hypertube, and each room can only be accessed by its owner.
5) Each personal room has a 'biotron' unit, a shower-like appliance which, amongst other things, can be used to read information on current powers. As it happens, it can also be used as a shower.
7) A disembodied voice sometimes speaks. It sounds tinny as though it's coming over a PA system, but there are no apparent speakers. Sometimes it will answer questions or react to things you do, as though it's watching you. Other times it will ignore you completely.
8) One of the applicants is an 'agent' for the Voice. It might be a player character or an NPC.
Rules
2) Power interpretation will be mostly up to you and creativity is encouraged. However, be sensible. Don't stretch the power beyond credibility just to boost your character's power level. Some limits might be explicitly placed on the power. If you go to far, retroactive limits might apply.
3) Use of the OOC thread to discuss strategy, ask questions, and coordinate actions is encouraged.
4) If you want your schemes to remain secret or between you and certain other players, you can use PMs, chatrooms, whatever works between you. I prefer to be kept apprised of this kind of thing but it's not essential.
5) If you want to learn more about the 'world' or interact with it, you can put a 'prompt' in your IC post, for instance, 'Bob cautiously pressed a button on the strange device' and I'll continue that in my next post by describing what happens.
6) You're allowed some degree of freedom to embellish the setting and frame the action, for instance you don't need my permission to land a blow on an npc, but generally I'll decide if that blow is fatal. I'll try to work the story with whatever you introduce. But I'll still be doing most of the 'game-mastering', and challenges and fights are essentially arbitrated by me.

"Please assemble in the central plaza." The voice was harsh and metallic, contrasting sharply with the gentleness of the ambient lights and the softness of the sheets below. Jessica pulled herself up onto her elbows, confused, her body stiff and aching. The room was unfamiliar. What was she doing here? She tugged at her clothes- they were the same suit she'd been wearing when she left work at 5pm on Wednesday, before... something. She groped around for her handbag, and found it, placed carefully on the nightstand. Checking her smartphone, the display told her it was 9am on Saturday, three days later. What had happened to her?

Misha chose the closest corridor, and found himself in a long hallway, lined on both sides by small rooms. Each room was structured slightly differently, but despite the lack of keepers or visible wares, they put him in mind of shops. Indeed, most of them had a counter and shelves, and some had cash registers or displays, but they seemed to be decorative only; the registers were a single, fused piece of plastic, or perhaps stone, while the displays and posters were all blank.

After a few minutes she got up and went to her purse, reaching in the pocket where she always kept her smokes and came up empty. She must've forgotten to buy more. She sat back down on the bed. "What time is it?" She questioned in a small voice.

As if in response to Aphrodite's words, a large holographic screen flickered to life in the middle of the room, hanging in mid-air. It read 9:04am.
"Please assemble in the central plaza," the voice insisted. "You wouldn't want to miss the fun, would you?"
the holographic screen flicked off, and the door to the room clicked open. Beyond it however was not a corridor, but a small, cylindrical compartment. Still, the room didn't appear to have any other exits.

Jessica hugged her bag tightly as she stepped tentatively into the pod. She was lost and confused, and having trouble comprehending her situation, but she clung to what she was sure of: If I can get out of here, out of this room, I can find the manager of this... hotel, or whatever this place is, and get things sorted out. I've already missed two days of work. I could get fired for this! These thoughts in mind, she gripped the handrail and held her breath. Suddenly, the hatch of the compartment sealed shut, causing her to cry out in surprise, and the ground seemed to fall away. Her knees began to shake, and she was suddenly very aware of the claustrophobia she thought she'd overcome, but which was suddenly as real as it had been all those years ago, covered in bruises and locked in the dumpster outside the school. She shut her eyes tightly and tried to breathe, knuckles white, trying to think of wide, open spaces... sunlight...
When she opened her eyes again, she was astonished. She stood in a field of wheat on a summer's day, skylarks singing overhead. A gentle breeze blew the scent of wildflowers, and the heat of the sun beat down on her skin. It was only when she remembered she was still gripping the handrail that she realised she was still inside the pod - what she was seeing was some kind of elaborate hologram projected on the walls, and somehow, into the scent of the air itself. She reached out to be sure- her hand hit metal and the view distorted slightly at her touch. Incredible, she thought. Her job had given her access to some of the most advanced graphics and communications technology ever developed, but she'd never seen anything like this.
There was a slight jolt, and the door slid open. Beyond it, a wide marble patio backed onto a fountain and some gardens, and for a moment she thought she was outside. Then she saw the galleries above, and the tubes and electric lights. What on Earth was this place?

Stepping tentatively out of the pod, Jessica spotted Aphrodite and hurried towards her. As she drew nearer, the woman's haughty, blue-eyed stare and stunning features caused her to falter and glance nervously at the ground, but she recovered and came back up, smiling brightly and extending a hand.
"I'm sorry, but do you know the way out of here? I seem to have... I mean, I'm not quite sure how I ended up here and I really have to get back home as soon as possible. Oh! I'm Jessica Moore. Human Resources with Eccotek Communication Solutions," she added, out of habit.

Keeping the little Russian man in mind Aarón quickly turned his attention to getting him to disarm himself. For a second his hands itched to grab the switchblade in his pocket and he could feel all his bad habits right behind them. Instead Aarón forced himself to play the diplomat and thinking quickly he decided to spout off some Russian in an attempt to put the man at ease. Aarón knew a few Russian phrases as it was quite common for drug suppliers in his area to be Russian immigrants. Sadly most of these phrases related to buying drugs, but Aarón was hoping he had picked up enough to calm a man with a knife. "*Hey друг, положил вниз с ножа*" (hey friend put down knife) he said while raising his hands to show that he was unarmed. "I don't know where this place is or how I came to be here but I'm from California in the US. My names Aarón, *a u tibyA?*?" (and you?).

"Sorry for the knife, comrade" Misha said as he placed his knife back into his pocket. "I'm Mikhail, friends call me Misha. Good to meet you Aarón." Misha reluctantly offered his hand trying to be friendly.
"You are from America you say." Misha added, now faking a smile. "Where you learn Russian from?"

Jessica paused, slightly taken aback by the strange woman, but trying not to show it.
"Uh. Pleased to meet you. I'm sorry... did you say taken? As in kidnapp-"
"GROOOOooouuuUUUNNNNNKKKKKKKK"
A sound like the swan-song of a mechanical plesiosaur shook the walls, causing the leaves of the plants to tremor and a few of the people dotted around the plaza to whirl around in surprise. After a few seconds of stunned silence, a booming voice spoke out, audible even from the corridor down which Misha had departed.
"Welcome, Humans, to Zeta Complex! You have been chosen to participate in a quite singular event, a tournament, if you will. The precise nature of this tournament will become clear over time, but there are some things of which you should be made aware immediately. ONE: Your bodies have been modified to accommodate what you might think of as 'superpowers'. You have each been gifted one such 'power', and may obtain others over the course of the tournament. TWO: Various products and services can be purchased within the complex with U-tokens, which can be obtained as rewards for participation. Participation in challenges is not mandatory, but you may find that a healthy supply of tokens will make your stay considerably more comfortable. THREE: You are not permitted to leave the complex until the tournament is complete. However, you will be given the opportunity to 'buy' an early exit from the proceedings. Attempts to leave without authorization are discouraged."
After pausing briefly, the voice continued.
"Those of you who have assembled in the central plaza, congratulations! You have successfully completed the first challenge, and been awarded 10 U-tokens. You can expect the difficulty of the challenges to increase from here. The second challenge will begin shortly." With that, there was a crackle, and the voice's presence lifted.
For a few seconds, there was silence. Then an angry shout rang out, followed by another, and soon there was a clamour of hysterical voices.

When he made it to the central plaza he could see that a small crowd had already gathered. 'How many people are even here' he thought as he was surprised at the number of people who were here. He stood behind the crowd as a blond woman was talking and came closer to hear what was going on. She introduced herself as Liliana Victoire and was shocked to hear what others had to say as they explained why they were here. 'So it is the work of a sick demented man' he thought to himself 'I should have found that exit.'
OOC Notes
"This is all a bit much for me," she admitted. "I need to sit down. I, uh, think I see some seats over there?"
She motioned to the café area where some other people were already sitting, and made her way over, seating herself at one of the tables. Leaning on the table with a hand to her head, she struggled to think. Kidnapped... was it possible? She was the only occupant of her one-bedroom apartment, so her disappearance could easily have gone unnoticed until the next morning, and even then, it wasn't uncommon for people to take days off due to illness, although her own record was faultless. After two days though her father would certainly have people looking for her- she knew how over-protective he could be, a fact she usually hated but right now couldn't be more glad about. Not to mention all the other abductees, if that's what they were - an operation like this couldn't go unnoticed for long. If she could just hold on until law enforcement got here...
This talk of superpowers worried her though. She'd been holding onto the hope that this was all a big mistake, or perhaps some kind of business deal she'd suffered amnesia about, but it was now clear that she was at the mercy of someone very deranged, and to have obtained all this technology, someone very, very powerful. She groaned. At that moment, she would have given almost anything for a coffee and a cigarette.
At that thought, a screen appeared above the table, causing her to flinch back. The image disappeared. Tentatively, she touched the table again, and a few words and an animated hologram of a coffee cup sprang to life in front of her.
Balance: 10
1 Cup Coffee: 1
Nicotine products not available at this time.
Touch image to confirm purchase.
Cautiously she reached out towards the phantasmal beverage. As she touched it it vanished, and the table began to whirr. After a couple of seconds an aperture at the centre of the table opened up and a robotic appendage placed a steaming cup in front of her, before vanishing back down the hole.
Purchase complete, read the screen.
Remaining Balance: 9
She sniffed the cup; it certainly smelled like coffee. It was even black and slightly sweetened, the way she liked it. What the hell, she thought, I'm already about as deep into this as I can get. She took a sip. It was surprisingly good.

"Coffee. Would you like one? If I'm understanding this right, I can buy nine more before I run out of credit."
Admittedly she had no idea when she'd get more of these... what had the voice called them? U-tokens? Whatever they were, they seemed to stand in for money in this place, which probably meant that the wad of cash and numerous credit cards to fairly healthy bank accounts in her purse were all but worthless until she got out. Then again, maybe not; even if the place itself wouldn't take regular money, she was pretty sure some of the other abductees would. In her business life, she'd discovered that even in a world where the real money was all sums on a database, the appeal of physical cash was strangely hypnotic...
At any rate, she wasn't in the mood to quibble over a cup of coffee. If that's how this place wanted to play it, then fine; it was still no reason to abandon basic niceties.
"Jessica Moore," she said, extending a hand across the table. "Hum-... I mean, pleased to meet you." She took another sip. "This coffee's really quite good, you know."

Pretending to know what she was doing, Jessica thought about coffee, and the screen sprung up again. The smell of the waffles had reminded her how hungry she was, and deciding to experiment, she thought about other foods; sure enough, the display changed to an ordered list of breakfast items. She ordered a 2ʉ cream pastry and another coffee, recoiling a little as the mechanical arms gracefully deposited the goods. Was it really reading her thoughts? That was a bit creepy. Holograms were one thing, but neural interfaces, another area Eccotek was understandably interested in, were decades, if not centuries, away from implementation, and yet here they were. If their kidnappers could do this much, how much more was possible?
"Say," said Jessica, handing Azzy the coffee and daintily lifting the pastry with a napkin. "That voice said something about modifying our bodies. Have either of you noticed anything... different, by any chance?"

Misha sat away from the crowd, alone, grasping his head trying to come with a way to escape. He tried and tried but nothing worth trying came to his mind. He was starting to feel hungry but he wouldn't eat even though he couldn't eat even if he wanted to as he did not receive any U-Tokens, something he was still unaware of. 'They probably have more tranquilizers in the food' Misha reasoned with himself. 'We fall sleep and they modify our bodies more, just like the scary stories from the old country.'
Fatigued he got up to go to his room. Someone had explained that they rode a tube to get here. 'Hehe. I feel like Mario' Misha said in his mind trying to stay positive without any desirable result. He got into the pod and was too lost into his own thoughts to notice the screen portraying something peaceful. He reached his room depressed and hopeless. "I going to die here." Misha shouted as he threw his linoleum knife at the nightstand. It chipped the side of the wood and the knife fell down. He sat in the corner trying to figure how to end it all and be free of the game. He got his knife and as he was ready to slash his wrist the light flickered. He tried again and as he was about to make an incision into his skin, flesh and blood vessels, lights flickered making him loose concentration. "Fine. I play your game" Misha shouted at the ceiling while looking around for a camera. "But me against you just."
He stripped naked and shouted at the walls "First you lose complete control. Then you lose game. Then I cut you liver out from your skin!" He grinned at the ceiling and calmly said "Day 1." and he made a cut on his abdomen.

Re: The Superpower Lottery
I know this is late, but I was kind of busy. I can't believe this... I hope we'll be able to revive this in the future.
Re: [OOC] The Superpower Lottery
I do regret that a lot of people never even got to use their powers, but that's how it goes. Many thanks for sticking with it as far as you have, and hopefully everyone had fun while it lasted. Maybe it's even given you a few ideas for the future, I know it has for me! I might do something like this again at some point in the future when I have more energy, and if I do you'll be the first to know.
So again, sorry, thanks, and I wish everyone happy RPing in the future.

Think of it like this: anyone can 'open' a bid, but for that bid to be valid it has to be 'filled' with tokens, supplied either from personal balance or by the leader.

And short answer, no, at least not yet. If you like you can have your character keep a personal tally and buy whatever other characters ask for with their 'share'.
