The Talismans Awaken

The Talismans Awaken Open » Places » San Francisco

Welcome to San Fran! Known as Fog City, it's famous for being the base of many individual movie directors and for its little slice of China known as Chinatown.

Reply to this roleplay »

The historic center of San Francisco is the northeast quadrant of the city bordered by Market Street to the south. It is here that the Financial District is centered, with Union Square, the principal shopping and hotel district, nearby. Cable cars carry riders up steep inclines to the summit of Nob Hill, once the home of the city's business tycoons, and down to Fisherman's Wharf, a tourist area featuring Dungeness crab from a still-active fishing industry. Also in this quadrant are Russian Hill, a residential neighborhood with the famously crooked Lombard Street, North Beach, the city's Little Italy, and Telegraph Hill, which features Coit Tower. Nearby is San Francisco's Chinatown, established in the 1860s. The Tenderloin is frequently described as the worst neighborhood in the city by tourist guides.

The Mission District was populated in the 19th century by Californios and working-class immigrants from Germany, Ireland, Italy and Scandinavia. In the 1910s, a wave of Central American immigrants settled in the Mission and, in the 1950s, immigrants from Mexico began to predominate. Recent years have seen rapid gentrification primarily along the Valencia Street corridor which is strongly associated with modern hipster sub-culture. Haight-Ashbury, famously associated with 1960s hippie culture, later became home to expensive boutiques and a few controversial chain stores, although it still retains some bohemian character. Historically known as Eureka Valley, the area now popularly called the Castro is the center of gay life in the city.

The city's Japantown district suffered when its Japanese American residents were forcibly removed and interned during World War II. The nearby Western Addition became established with a large African American population at the same time. The "Painted Ladies," a row of well-restored Victorian homes, stand alongside Alamo Square, and the mansions built by the San Francisco business elite in the wake of the 1906 earthquake can be found in Pacific Heights. The Marina to the north is a lively area with many young urban professionals.

The Richmond, the vast region north of Golden Gate Park that extends to the Pacific Ocean, has a portion called "New Chinatown" but is also home to immigrants from other parts of Asia and Russia. South of Golden Gate Park lies the Sunset with a predominantly Asian population. The Richmond and the Sunset are largely middle class and, together, are known as The Avenues. These two districts are each sometimes further divided into two regions, the Outer Richmond and Outer Sunset can refer to the more Western portions of their respective district and the Inner Richmond and Inner Sunset can refer to the more Eastern portions. Bayview-Hunters Point in the southeast section of the city is one of the poorest neighborhoods and suffers from a high rate of crime, though the area has been the focus of controversial plans for urban renewal.

The South of Market, once filled with decaying remnants of San Francisco's industrial past, has seen significant redevelopment. The locus of the dot-com boom during the late 1990s, by 2004 South of Market began to see skyscrapers and condominiums dot the area (see Manhattanization). Following the success of nearby South Beach, another neighborhood, Mission Bay, underwent redevelopment, anchored by a second campus of the University of California, San Francisco. Just southwest of Mission Bay is the Potrero Hill neighborhood featuring sweeping views of downtown San Francisco.

Vera's breath was soft as her back pressed against the brick wall. Slowly, she counted to ten in her head. In front of her, there was a mob, searching for her, trying to make her pay the 'debt' that she apparently owed. She clenched both of her hands, the talisman digging into her right palm and a dull pocket knife in her other hand. If they happened to come too close, they'd meet a bloody end. 'One...Two...Three...' she thought softly, hoping they would pass by her, not noticing her. One of the mob members came within a feet of her and looked in her direction. She held her breath and pushed her back harder against the wall. She knew he wouldn't see her, but she didn't care, she hoped he wouldn't hear her either. 'Four...Five...Six...TEN!' she bolted out of the alleyway and ran. All of a sudden, she ran into something. It jabbed her in the stomach and the talisman dropped from her hand, revealing her. "Shit!" she yelled, diving and getting it before anyone could see it. She shoved it into her pocket, not wanting anyone else to take it and saw the she was surrounded by strange people. They were dressed completely in black and seemed very out of place in the streets of San Francisco. She looked around her, biting her lip. "This... looks... bad..."

In the street there came a commotion. Strange people wearing black were surrounding a woman. The truly strange part was that the men in black looked like ninja with beady eyes. So it was happening already? Those darkly dressed ninja were not actually men at all. It was difficult to truly explain, but in a nutshell, they were evil. But there was someone else near the scene that hadn't been spotted yet. He was in one of the alleyways, back pressed against the wall. A normal-looking Chinese man in loose-fitting khaki pants and a dark grey sweater. He had shoulder-length hair tied in a ponytail.

"Shadow Khan..." whispered Chang as he listened in to what was happening. But why did Shadow Khan care about a woman? Sure, she had the Snake Talisman, but this was strange activity for them. At this point, Chang was torn between stepping in to help the woman and gathering more information. The choice was not hard to make in the end. Chang darted out of his hiding place, and ramming a flying kick into the nearest Shadow Khan, "Hyaaah!" came a somewhat high-pitched cry as Chang swiftly swirled his arms into the Tiger stance. From there, the Shadow Khan began backing up, apparently they recognized who Chang was, and sank away into the shadows.

"Quickly!" said Chang, leaving his stance and approaching the woman, "We must leave here! They will return, and in greater number!" warned Chang. The Shadow Khan had been taken off guard by Chang's appearance, but that wouldn't last if he and Vera didn't get out of there.

"I'll be right there! I'm just putting out the garbage!" Maya opened the restaurant's back door and saw a group of blackdressed people running out the alley, leaving a man and a woman behind. Maya looked at them, trying to figger out why the blackdresses men ran away so quickly. And why they were there in the first place. Completely caught up in her thoughts, she tripped and fell agains a bunch of garbage cans, dropping the bag of garbage, which ripped and caugth fire. Eek! Maya backed of and looked around to find something the put out the fire.

Vera nodded hesitantly. Who was he? Did he want to help her or harm her? These kinds of questions swarmed through her head like angry bees, but she ran along with him nonetheless. Perhaps he was trying to get her out of harms way of those... Things. As she ran, she could feel the talisman digging into her leg from her pocket. But she didn't dare take it out, in fear that the man would try to take it.

She took a deep breath and doted a sign as she ran. She had questions, and she needed answers. "Um... I know it's a bad time to ask and all... But, who are you exactly? I mean, what the hell is going on?" she usually didn't ask questions, but the day was getting weirder and weirder and had her more confused by the minute.

Jin sighed deeply. Another bust... He hadn't earned as much money as he thought he would have. The show, admittedly had some kinks to work out, but he didn't think it would be so bad that only ten people were willing to sit through and pay for it. "I'm not sure why I bother with rehearsals anymore..." It was true. His 'actors' bicker too much to even keep on script. And even when finally do, they end up getting the giggles and can't perform correctly. It was disastrous, time after time. But he hasn't given up. He took off his backpack, unzipped it and looked inside. "I'm gonna get you guys to perform if its the last thing I do..." He said. To his toys. Inside the bag were three puppets, all donning traditional Japanese clothing. Irou, the 'elder' brother in red, Jirou, the 'middle' child in blue, and Mirou, the 'youngest' sibling of the three. He closed his bag again and looked toward the sky. "I convinced my parents that I would strive out here on my own. I'll show them. I can do it!" He said raising his fists. "My spirit burns! It burns brightly! Hotter...hotter!.............???" Jin smells something. "Hey something is burning around here."

The smell was coming from an alleyway, where a girl was trying to put out a fire. "Gah!" Jin looked around quickly, and noticed that a fire extinguisher was next to the exit of her building in case of emergencies. Jin rushed over, past the girl and to the extinguisher. "Move!" He aimed the fire extinguisher and put out the blaze. "Hoo..." Jin exhaled in relief. "You know, your very impressive." He says to the girl. "It takes some amazing skill to set fire in a cold damp alley way without any help." It was true, there didn't seem to be any reason for there to be a fire where they were. "How in the world did this happen?"

Jin almost glowed. "Ah! You mean master puppeteer? Great showman of the east? The master marionette behind the greatest sensation that's sweeping the nation?" He boasted. "Hi. I'm Jin. Tell your friends! My show will go worldwide!" Jin made grand hand gestures, with words just as grand. He interrupted himself. "But hey, Maya I have to know. What exactly happened out here? 'You have no idea why this keeps happening to you'? So this isn't the first time you've set fire to your trash in the middle of the night? I mean really, people will think your a pyromaniac. People aren't keen to pyromaniacs."

Jin had a way of rambling when he doesn't mean to. It wasn't a nervous tick or anything, just something he couldn't help doing.

Maya laughed. "Yeah, that's it! I went to see your show last week. It was good!" She turned her necklace around between her fingers, a habit of her when she talked to people. "Well it's not only the trash.. or in the middle of the night. It happens sometimes, about twice a day. It's been happening for about 10 years I guess.. I don't really remember how or when. It's kinda a big problem, since I'm pretty scared of fire. I just.. freeze everytime it happens, so I can't think clearly and put it out."
A voice came from the door. "Maya, are you alright? Come help me clean the tables, it's almost closing time!"
"I'll be right there, mom!" Maya turned back to Jin. "My parents own this restaurant, I work here for a while until I find a proper job so I can afford to live on my own." Maya looked at the ashes of wat once was the trash. ".. I'll clean that up later, you want something to drink?"

Jin joked. "Your not gonna set that drink on fire too are you?" He entered the restaurant behind her, and followed her through the kitchen into the almost empty dining area. The restaurant had a chinese motif going on,and the lighting was soft and almost romantic. "Wow, nice place you guys got. Are you Chinese? You look Chinese. I'm half Chinese myself. Although I think I connect more with my Japanese half. But the Chinese have better china. Haha! Puns..." Jin went and took his seat. "So how long have you guys had this place? I imagine you guys must do pretty well."

Maya took two bottles from the fridge, opened them and put them on the table.
"Yeah, my parents are both chinese, they opened this restaurant right after they got married, which is about twentythree years ago. Business is pretty good, yeah."
Maya saw that the last costumers had left and started cleaning the table.
"How about you? Your puppet show didn't attract a lot of people, hm?"

That one statement hit a bit of a soft spot.

"How about you? Your puppet show didn't attract a lot of people, hm?"

Jin fiddled with his water bottle a bit. "Yeaaah...not a lot of people actually enjoy the show itself." He looks up at the ceiling. "See, I get feed back that they were impressed at how I'm able to make the puppets do what they do, they just don't like the...script...I guess." Jin looks back down at the table, making gestures with his hands as he spoke. "See, I have these great story ideas, and they sound good in my head, it's just that when I actually get down to performing it...it just sorta..." He found it difficult putting it into words. "Took...a life of it's own... and goes in a completely different direction!" He said exasperatedly. "I mean really! How hard is it to say a couple lines correctly!? It isn't! I try and try and try, but the darned things just don't listen to a word I sa--" Jin stopped himself. His habit of ranting was killing him. And he knew it. "Eh. Hehehe." He chuckled nervously. "Sorry, I uh...like to believe my puppets are actually alive! You see. Yes. That's it. K-keeps the show real and convincing you see!"

Out of the corner of his eye, he could swear he saw a shadow move. He looked behind Maya where he noticed it, but saw nothing unusual. ...just my imagination......?

"N-nothing." Jin tried shaking it off, but he couldn't help but feel that they were being watched. In fact, he had this feeling all night that something was happening, but he couldn't tell what. "You said this restaurant was closed right? Like, there's not supposed to be anyone in the here right now...right?" He saw it again. He can see shadows moving around the room, circling them like sharks to unsuspecting prey. Jin was about to say something when he heard screams come from the kitchen.

Maya heard a scream and looked around. She saw them now too.
"Th-they look like those things I saw this evening!" She jumped up and wanted to run to the kitchen, but the shadows were blocking the way.
"What're we gonna do now?"

Jin had panicked for a bit, as events unfolded before him and his new friend. How could anyone not? You got ninjas appearing literally from the shadows and attacking you for no apparent reason. He took a second to calm down and assess the situation. They were in a chinese restaurant, so naturally there were a couple statues here and their in the dining area. One of a small gold dragon, another of a gold Buddha. He could do something here and now, but if he did it in front of Maya...

Maya was about to run into the kitchen when the ninjas had blocked her way. She was in trouble. "Maya!" Jin had no choice. He made a dash over to the dragon statue and held it tightly in his hands. "Please work..." he did what he usually did with his puppets. He released the hidden energy inside him and infused it into the statue. The dragon's eyes glowed, and it made cracking, snapping sounds as it's body began to come to life. "Now then..." He threw the dragon at the mysterious ninja. "Do something about them!" The dragon uncoiled and flew through the air, assaulting the ninjas with it's tiny claws. It's quick movements tore through their bodies, and unfortunately, through the furniture in the restaurant as well. "Haha! Take that! Fear the power of the hidden dragon!" Two seconds later the dragon was thrown back into his face. Quite literally. It fell back to the floor in it's original form, lifeless, and useless.

Jin laughed nervously as the ninja surrounded him. "Ehehe...no hard feelings...?" He took off his backpack and tried undoing the zipper to get at his three puppets, but there was no time, as the ninjas already began to attack.

Jin had been pulled down by Maya avoiding the ninja's attack, as she kicked him away. "Th-thanks...!" He said, jarred and slightly surprised. He was about to unzip his bag for help, when the ninja had deemed it necessary to retreat and disappear. They melted into the walls and became shadows again, as the shadows hurried out the kitchen door. "...th...the hell was that??" Jin just sat there confused and a bit bruised. "Hey, your fine right?" He then remembered. "That's right! There was screaming from the kitchen! Your parents were in there, right??"

Jin couldn't believe it. The fight in the dining room was a distraction while they were kidnapping the parents in the kitchen. He was frozen. He didn't know what to do. What was going on. Everything was just happening so fast. Ninjas? Talismans? What on earth was happening? Maybe this had something to do with his powers...? What if this dragon talisman that they were talking about had something to do with him? Whatever was going on, he figured if he followed Maya, then he may be able to finally get some answers. "That's a good idea. Yeah, sure lets go find them. Do you know what direction they went?"

Maya thought about it. She couldn't quite remember where they went, only that it was in the direction of Chinatown.
"I only know that they went in the direction of Chinatown, but that's not really much help either."
Maya jawned. She looked at the clock. It was 2 am.
"It's to late to go now, how about we meet here tomorrow? It'd be easier to find them by day too, I guess."

Re: [OOC] The Talismans Awaken

Yay, more double posting!!!11!!!1

Getting to the point, IC posting has started, in case you didn't know, so, have at it.

Re: [OOC] The Talismans Awaken

Ok, I accepted the new character. I'll be the starting the actual posting in IC later this evening, so we have that to look forward to.

On a sidenote, I have erased all the Reserved spots that have not been filled and once again they are on the market. I'm sorry if that pisses anyone off, but I've had too many Role Plays where people constantly asked to reserve spots and then I never hear from them again. It's not happening this time. From now on, it's first come, first served. I even added it as a rule.

Re: [OOC] The Talismans Awaken

Okay, I'll change it soon.

Re: [OOC] The Talismans Awaken

Double post for the lose. Oh well.

xoGEEKYCHICAxo, I have no real problem with your character. My only issue is that she just seems too young. For one thing, it's illegal to get a job until you're at least 16 years old. That alone makes her bio impossible. All I ask is that you add maybe 12 years to her. She'd be 29 years old, but she'd still be the Serpent. She reminds me a little of Viper.

dig-kun's character, Jin, is 22. Even Chang (immortality aside) has the physical characteristics of a man who is around 30 years old.

Re: [OOC] The Talismans Awaken

I appreciate everyone's interest, but I have one complaint. I have like four people reserving spots but not a single Character Sheet yet.

I hate to sound mean, but after 24 hours, all spots that have been reserved become open again. I'm sorry, but I'll not have unanswered reservations slow the RP down.

Re: [OOC] The Talismans Awaken

I would like to reserve the spot of the dragon.

Re: [OOC] The Talismans Awaken

Yeah, I saw your character and didn't like it. A 17 year old expert in Karate and Kung Fu that always carries weapons and has the personality of a hardened assassin? Who are you trying fool? This isn't some anime where everyone is in High School. If you want in this rolepay, I expect to see some years added to your character, especially with how skilled you make her sound.

Now, I don't care if you want to be a teenager. Be my guest. But be REALISTIC about it. A 17 year old is still going to be in High School and will hardly have mastered any martial arts (especially since they would be more focused on School-related things).

Re: [OOC] The Talismans Awaken

Can I reserve a spot for the serpent? I'm working on the Character Sheet and I'll have it done soon. Thanks :)

Re: [OOC] The Talismans Awaken

Nothing specific in the character sheets. Just make sure you include what Chinese Year you were born in so I will know which Talisman-power to scratch off.

Re: [OOC] The Talismans Awaken

Ah, I loved that show. If it's alright, I'll take the rat!

Re: [OOC] The Talismans Awaken

I'm interrested, is there anything you want to see in the character sheet?
Reserving the monkey, btw.

Also: I like the Jackie Chan Adventures theme! I hope the talismans don't get mixed up, like they did in the one episode.

Re: [OOC] The Talismans Awaken

I should probably edit it into the first post, but make sure you add your character's age/Chinese birth year somewhere in the "Details" section of the application.

Re: [OOC] The Talismans Awaken

Can I reserve a spot for the tiger? ANd i will have the cs up shortly :]

Re: [OOC] The Talismans Awaken

Wow. Either you have a problem with JCA (Jackie Chan Adventures) or Immortality. I didn't create the powers, and since I don't really trust anyone with a power as abusable as Immortality I went ahead and took it myself. Is there a problem with that?

Re: [OOC] The Talismans Awaken

Excuse this post. >.<

[OOC] The Talismans Awaken

"The Talismans Awaken"

2500 years ago (482 B.C.), a rare alignment in the stars released a demon from the Otherworldly Plane. The demon, named Laoshin, wreaked havoc on the ancient world with seemingly no way of stopping him. However, 12 mysterious warriors appeared, each having their own mystical Talisman with magic powers. They would come to be known as "The Immortals" or "The 12". They battled Laoshin, but were unable to destroy him. The Immortals were forced to combine their powers to throw Laoshin back into his world, just as the rare alignment ended. The Immortals then separated, hiding their respective Talismans in the furthest corners of the world. What they did not know, is that the alignment of stars that freed Laoshin was a cosmic event that happens every 2500 years.

The year is now 2018. 2500 years have passed, and the time of Laoshin's release is fast approaching. Around the world, the 12 magic Talismans begin awakening one by one, and along with them, new Immortals are awakened in the form of ordinary individuals (each born in a separate Chinese year) becoming endowed with magical powers (the power the Talisman that corresponds with their birth year). Only one of the original 12 Immortals remains. Can he find the 11 new Immortals and assemble them in time to defend the world, yet again, from Laoshin?

They're 12 Talismans. Each with a unique ability. They go as follows:

1. Boar - Heat beams from the eyes. -Open
2. Rat - Giving life to that which has no life (namely statues and toys) -Taken
3. Ox - Superhuman strength -Open
4. Tiger - Separating good from evil in the form of polar opposite twins. -Open
5. Hare - Superhuman speed -Open
6. Dragon - Power of making fire from one's hands or mouth. -Taken
7. Serpent - Invisibility -Taken
8. Horse - The healing of any ailment. -Open
9. Ram - Astral projection -Open
10. Monkey - Shape shifting between animals. -Open
11. Rooster - Levitation -Open
12. Dog - Immortality -Taken

The idea is that our characters were each born in a different Chinese year and naturally possess the ability to wield the power of the corresponding Talisman (even if we aren't holding the Talisman). Not only that, the powers of the corresponding Talisman become stronger when used by the right person (ie More powerful flames when the Dragon Year character uses the Dragon Talisman). However, for each animal, their is an opposing animal. While the powers of matching Talismans are stronger, the opposing Talisman is weaker (A person born in the year of the Dragon cannot use the Dog Talisman and because they oppose each other and vice versa). Those oppositions are as follows:

1. Boar =/= Serpent
2. Rat =/= Horse
3. Ox =/= Ram
4. Tiger =/= Monkey
5. Hare =/= Rooster
6. Dragon =/= Dog

Every character (even if not one of the Immortals) can still use the basic powers of the Talismans like in the show. The Immortals can use their corresponding power WITHOUT the Talisman, or have their power amplified WITH said Talisman. They can still use other Talisman powers (except the opposing Talisman), but only WITH said Talismans in hand. Make sense?

RULES

1. Be realistic. Yes we have magic, but this is a modern setting, so please Role Play accordingly.
2. Use accurate math when determining you're character's birth year. Just subtract their age from the current year (2018) to get their birth year, then simply look up which Chinese year that was. Alternatively, just tell me what numerical year they were born in and I will tell you which Chinese year that was. For instance, a person born in 1988 cannot be the Boar, because 1988 was the year of the Dragon.
3. Unless your character is really old, they cannot have mastered more than 1 or 2 (3 tops) martial art/fighting style.
4. Do not abuse the Dog Talisman. There's a good reason I took the Dog Immortal position first. Because I don't trust anyone with natural Immortality.
5. This kind of IS my game. So just comply if I ask you to change something with your character.
6. No reservations. I’m sorry, but people have a bad habit of making reservations and never following through with them in my Role Plays. From now on its first come, first served.
7. Over all, have fun!
