What appears to be a typical flight soon becomes the nightmare of a lifetime. Oceanic Flight 518 was cruising near a Hawaiian island when all hell breaks loose. Equipment failures were only the beginning. As the passengers fell into a state of panic, the pilots, in a last-ditch effort, maneuvered the plane to safety. Although, it would soon be discovered that safety was not quite as safe as one would hope.

Nonetheless, a fair amount of the passengers survived the less-than-perfect crash landing. Unbeknownst to them, the plane landed in the canopied jungle in the center of Molokai Island, which happened to place the survivors within hiking distance of the City of Kaunakakai.

Waiting for what seemed like years on such a highly developed island, Dane Henderson and his sister, Katherine Henderson, decide to seek help on their own. Gathering up the supplies for their trek, they continue to question the lack of a rescue. How was it that no one could find them? Confused and baffled, they enter the jungle with such a limited knowledge of what they were really in store for.

The reason behind their lack of a rescue is because of something they have no control over - rabies. A rare mainland strain of rabies has been mixed with the volcanic activity of the Hawaiian Islands, thus creating a contagion that forces its recipients into a wild, feral rage. The civilization that should have saved them is tearing itself apart in what will eventually be called 'Strain Z'.

Dane and Kitty must keep themselves alive, in the city and in the wild, long enough to find a way off of Hawaii.
