Introduction
Verdanus, a planet so named long ago for its verdant forests and beautiful natural landscapes, the spawning pool of humanity, has succumbed to the various technological revolutions. Within the memorable past there were still sprawling plains and untamed wilderness. Now there are cities, factories, space ports. The entire planet has quickly grown into an interconnected metropolis, all thanks to the abundant resources of Verdanus's sister planet, Tertius. The larger red neighbor is a gravitationally bound planet that, while scarce of life, has plenty of ores and minerals readily available. It's surface has been vegetated and divided into colonies, each belonging to one arm or another of the Consulate, the ruling body over both planets, based on the Verdan homeworld. The colonies span almost as nations, growing various algae to supply food to both worlds, mining the metals that grow the Verdan cityscapes and build the Verdan ships, and succumbing to the strict trade schedules that keep the Tertian workers at bay.
All is not well: every one of the regularly scheduled Verdan ships has been grounded on Tertius. The various colonies have proclaimed themselves nations. Verdanus is starving and defenseless, while Tertius is in chaos. And these events have occurred in only this past week. While the Consulate scrambles to reclaim their quarry, the newly formed nations of Tertius struggle to choose a side in the crisis. A conference of ambassadors meets now in Koagrad, as some nations claim sovereignty for themselves and their planet, while others vacillate between neutrality and the choice to succumb to their mother-world: without Verdanus they lack all of the modernizations and advancements made in the last century. The Brotherhood, a secret society known only by its tree-like hierarchy, is at least responsible for the grounding of the transport ships. Similarly, an ambassador of a neutral country has been assassinated and impersonated - although that plot is not yet privy to anyone actually meeting for the Koagrad Peace Talks.
What's more, is that the Tertians involved in this sudden revolutions are coming out of a daze - they were miners, engineers, technicians, and have no idea why they suddenly became revolutionaries, governors, ambassadors. However, now that their lives have been turned upside down, they are reluctant to drop everything and return to the old way of life - and none are sure whether that is even possible. The inertia of the events from past few days is carrying everything forward - but to what end?
What role will you play in this epic conflict? Do your loyalties lie with the Verdan Consulate, the Brotherhood, a Tertian nation, or do you freelance, pirate, or profit now that the times are changing? Help unravel the plot and create the aftermath!
Good luck!

Places in Verdanus and Tertius: War of the World
13 postsA near-space, space-age, human solar system.
The known worlds, Verdanus and Tertius, are confined to this small sector of space. What lies far out is a problem left to be dealt with a century from now.
1 postsVerdanus
The once-landscape-but-now-cityscape planet has all of the latest innovations and amenities, but has recently lost its grip on the supply of resources from the Tertian colonies.
6 postsThe Consulate
The headquarters of (and by the same name as) the capitalist ruling body of Verdanus. Led by the Con Gregor and his advisors, the Consulate seeks to preserve Verdan supremacy by reclaiming the Tertian nations as once-again colonies.
8 postsTertius
This large red planet has only recently accepted humanity and allowed its resources to be plundered. Now it is at the brink of a civil war between its nations that has spawned from the interplanetary struggle with Verdanus.
28 postsKoagrad
This tiny Tertian nation has chosen the most neutral of all stances - to further diplomacy without choosing sides. Koagrad City is home to the Koagrad Peace talks, currently between representatives of all Tertian Nations.
2 postsFloragyas
Floragyas is a small sled-proclaimed nation east of Koagrad on Tertius.
4 postsEurova
An expansive Tertian colony, now nation, that has the closest approximation to a military force on all of Tertius.

OOC Notes
A collective wince. The silent screens flicked between various broadcasts of the violence on Tertius, casting their light on this abashed room of Verdan heads of state. Gregor kicked the table, then slumped into his chair.
“And the shipments… What of our ships? Which idiot consolidated the transports to all be on Verdanus at the same damn time!?”
The answer was, of course, reflexive, and Con Gregor recognized it only after voicing the question. His cabinet retained silence. Now Pretanna spoke.
“We have lost contact with our forces in twelve of their nations. However, I have secured loyalty in at least three others. Fighting continues in four. And Koagrad has unwittingly accepted my proposal for a parlay.”
Gregor waved to her his acknowledgement.
“Keep on with all that. Counselor Vassi, assemble me an analysis team. I need to know how I let this happen.”
OOC Notes
The arrangement was complete – all except for the extreme similarity between the two men. Reiko lifted the vase, turned it on its side, and this time struck the ambassador with it in the face until it broke. Whatever likeness they had shared was now obscured by ceramic shards. Now he screamed, and within moments there were several aides in the room.
“Ambassador Jorm! What is the meaning of this!” one of them asked, immediately launching to check the vitals of the corpse.
“A Verdan assassin, is what that is! Here through your incompetence!”
Reiko was in.
OOC Notes
The red reflection off of Tertius illuminated the Verdan night so well that Jerabel could barely find shadows large and dark enough to hide his fat torso. These nightly outings had increased in volume for him several times over in the past few months. His Contact in the Tree had more and more calculations for him, and Jerabel was unfortunate enough to have no subordinates.
“I compiled the shipment schedules and have calculated the beat to be in one week. Is that… is that when it is going to happen?”
His Contact was hooded but had identified himself with The Grip, so Jerabel handed over his calculations.
“The Brotherhood thanks you and prides itself in your work.”
This was it! Jerabel was almost giddy to finally be promoted, awarded subordinates, become their Contact! How he would enjoy his just scheduled 15 cycle vacation! Even as the knife slid into his side he was thinking of how wonderful it was to no longer be the lowest hanging branch, or leaf, or whatnot. Dying hadn’t even crossed his mind.
OOC Notes
“Shut up! No speaking!”
Sharp words from the youthful captor as he jabbed the bound and gagged men with the end of his club. The first was wide-eyed and groaning horribly, face to the floor, almost kissing the rubber tiles. The other two were tied so tightly they could hardly catch a breath. Their captor smiled, showing stained teeth. It could not have gone any better.
“Hey!” came a gruff voice from the top of the stairwell that led into the dark hold. “Are you done? We need you up here, doing your damn job.”
“I thought this was my job now,” said Elan, the captor.
“They’re not going anywhere and we’re hungry. Get.”
Elan nodded towards the hostages as if they were the ones issuing the order and obeyed. The hallway in which he emerged was musty and dimly lit, but he hardly noticed it. He swiped his card in the familiar lock, took his place inside the tiny kitchen, and sighed. High fat, high sugar, no creativity. With a last look at the blackness outside his window, he began preparing the crew’s meal.
OOC Notes
The yelling, the whining!
“Coot! You never shut up!”
Coot really did not shut up, even at Vanco’s remark.
“Because I’m thinking out loud, because I can’t walk, and because I want a way out!”
Vanco should have restrained himself seeing as how Coot really could not walk – his legs were broken – but spit his retort anyway.
“Maybe if you hadn’t mouthed off to the damn miners, you’d still be walking!”
“Or maybe if you hadn’t taken an unsanctioned smoke break the damn miners wouldn’t have gotten into the damn building? When I get back to Verdanus I’m filing a formal complaint. What are you doing? Hey, Vanco, come on, I wasn’t serious, PLEASE!”
Vanco had been stripped of his weapons, but their improvised holding cell had a bed in it. He had grabbed the pillow and was now smothering Coot. He had not been sure if being chosen for Tertius duty was a punishment or a privilege, but after two years of being paired with Coot, he had had enough. He grinned.
“Shut up, would ya?”
Peace and quiet ran rampant.
OOC Notes
A low gurgle stemmed from somewhere, and moisture warmed his cheeks. In tears, he finally released fours hours of astonishment.
“How the hell is it MY fault?!”
He was not director of security – who potentially could have been responsible for the unacceptable entry of an armed assassin. He was also not the security marshal assigned to Ambassador Jorm – who certainly could be blamed. Moreover, he was not even security. His tears had subsided, and his eyes, dry and red, now glowed with anger. His face hinted at vengeance, and Jaden, a scholar who had occupied the complex before the peace talks had been arranged, would get revenge. One way or another.
OOC Notes
Gustav Jones started with surprise at hearing his own name. He turned to face the general direction of the voice, though he could make out very little in the dark. Stupor still held him silent.
"Jones, if that is you, I'm glad I've stumbled onto you. Where's that dreaded switch..."
A moment later the hallway flooded with blinding light. When this second shock had subsided, he was able to recognize the other speaker as Ambassador Ponan.
"Am..Ambassador! What... What are you doing up in the middle of the night?!"
Ponan continued to speak as though the other's confusion had never been expressed.
"Now see here Jones. This whole debacle, with the Verdan ships being grounded on Tertius in so great a quantity, and with the mobs overrunning the administrative centers, and with these Koagrad peace talks, it's all got me thinking."
Gustav opened his mouth about to speak, but the Ambassador anxiously continued.
"It's all so organized. Very organized. But by whom?"
OOC Notes
"Frankly, I am at a loss."
He had lost the intensity of emotion that had stifled the advisors previously; now they were stifled by his surrender. One of the advisors, likely of science or culture, tried to fill the resulting void.
"Con, considering our remaining forces, could we not simply capture the University at Koagrad? Without the University the rest of Tertius would be left without the teachings and..."
The advisor's own fervor waned as the glares yielded scoffs and smirks, one even from General Prettana. Con Gregor took notice.
"General Prettana, why don't you share your thoughts on this subject."
Prettana looked momentarily startled, but with a shallow bow obliged.
"Our only hope rests in prolonging the current infighting among the nations. The capture of Koagrad would remind them of the University's importance."
She glanced about, then explained.
"Such aggression would cause them to unite against us. We would lose."
OOC Notes
"S-sir, I c-can't quite f-figure out what the p-problem is, s-sir!"
The captain watched Horman with apparent amusement, but said nothing. Horman hoped dearly that this did not indicate that the other wanted a full report, and after a brief hesitation returned to his furious pressing. The captain was by far the least condescending officer to preside over Horman's career in communications, but he was still a captain of the Navy. The man seemed to be consumed by his thoughts, and Horman's typing was the only sound for several minutes.
"Officer Cambo, you can relax. There is nothing wrong with our instruments."
Horman's eyes widened as he forgot completely about the terminal.
"B-but, s-sir, then wh-what..."
"I believe that the problem rests with Tertius, Officer Cambo. Verdanus is eclipsed by Tertius, and Tertius is no longer relaying to us. I've a bad feeling."
He spoke into the ship's speaker.
"Turn us around."
OOC Notes
"Well, Jemsem, what do we do now?"
Jemsen was squinting through the viewport, looking out at the Tertian dusk. Rand still stood in the doorway to the room. Neither had had the time to shower in the past few days, and Jemsen looked to have gotten little sleep as well. Wild thoughts seemed to glare off of the reflection of his eyes in the viewport glass. Rand's patience wore thin.
"Jemsen, I said, what do we do? We rallied, we captured the 'Dandies, and we've got the mining complex. What's next?"
Ulric grasped for an answer.
"I... I have to come clean. I don't know what we should do. For Tertius' sake, I don't know why we did what we did!"
Rand was visibly jarred, and covered the distance to turn his friend to face him.
"But Jemsen - you led us! You started this whole thing! How can you not know why?!"
OOC Notes
He had to keep up this act for them. He started breathing more dramatically and heavily. "I could have died..." He said in a grim, unsteady voice. Reiko stared off towards the floor, backing away from the four aides standing near him in a half-circle. He seemed to be in some sort of denial, a trance that was striking him through this near-death experience. Just keep it up, Reiko.
"Ambassador Jorm. Please! Sit down." Said one of the older aides, who rushed to him, putting their arm around Jorm and easing him onto a nearby chair. "Here, drink this." The Aide said as he handed their beloved Ambassador a cup of water.
Reiko needed to avert their attention from him. He needed a scapegoat, and he figured that only someone in this room would suffice. "You.." Reiko, now Ambassador Jorm, pointed to a scholar he'd yelled at earlier. "You were suppose to keeping watch. You were the intelligence here, and unless my memory fails me, I believe not too long ago the other day I saw you having quite an intense conversation with some of the security that were assigned here. Were..were you trying to have me killed?!" Jorm raised his voice suddenly. "Take him Away!" Jorm shrieked once more, pointing at this one scholar, the now scapegoat.
OOC Notes
That is why the few who were privy to this overview of the Brotherhood's structure thought of it as a tree - either as roots, splitting and thinning into the ground from the central trunk, or leaves growing on twigs on the branches of the central trunk. Since each representation reflected facets of the Brotherhood's operations, the tree was only more applicable as a metaphor.
Counselor Vassi ruminated on how to go about destroying it, while also wistfully wishing he were a brother.
OOC Notes
His head had suddenly filled with paranoia, as he imagined himself jobless, homeless, and stuck in Koagrad. He was Verdan born, but a Tertian by nature; he emigrated to Floragyas and quickly ascended to Systems Engineer at the Third Trust Algae Pools.
That was then. Now, not two weeks had passed since the first assemblies, mobs, and riots. Jones' own career seemed like a long abandoned hobby. What boggled him was that he could not figure out what he had done to become speechwriter to a newly appointed ambassador, thus Drawing him away from the algae pools. His engineering position must have been replaced by now.
And I'm sure as he'll not going to admit inexperience in speechwriting and compromise this job too, he thought on the way back to his room.
OOC Notes
A formally dressed man stepped through the large doors, standing at attention. The low lighting of the room made almost every facial feature hard to discern from the darkness. A simple lamp was light above the doorway the man entered, the light barely reaching the oak desk. "Yes, boss?"
"I've felt the need to expand out of this place. Floragyas is simply too small now that we've gained so much power. All the senators from this country bow down to us, for god's sake." The man behind the desk began, leaning forward slightly. The listener remained stock-still. "You may speak freely. What is your opinion?"
"I believe that is the best course of action. However, we should do it discreetly." The man said gruffly. The seated figure nodded slowly.
"Very good. Nice and slow..." He said slowly. "Ivyson, please send our usual men to scout out neighboring countries. I'm particularly interested in Koagrad." A slight shiver of anticipation ran up the mans spine.
Ivyson bowed low. "Your word is my command, boss." He said, backing out of the room almost stiffly. As if he were afraid.
When the door clicked shut behind him, and the heavy footsteps faded, three men suddenly revealed themselves. One dropped down from the ceiling, his entire body cloaked in black. Another pulled himself out of a niche in the floor, covered by the carpet. The third stepped out from behind the large armchair the "boss" sat in.
"I'm afraid he might have noticed us." The first said disappointedly. "Must have gotten scared, he did."
The second chuckled. "It might have been me. Ate some broccoli for lunch that didn't go down all too well."
The third flinched, backing away from him. "I thought something smelled funny."
"Enough. You all have done well, but passing gas in my office is very rude." The seated man said almost coldly.
The second body guard grinned. "My bad, boss."
The boss sighed, and waved them away. The bodyguards disappeared once more, without another word said. "Once I have enough information, I'll formulate a plan. My goal... Hmmm... I'll aim high and claim all of Tertius. It's not like it's heavily populated anyways."
The man sat back, and grinned.
OOC Notes
One of the aides piped up then, "A TRAITOR has a dozen pre-thought excuses for disobeying their country. None of which make the act itself any less treasonous." He gritted his teeth and the others nodded in agreement.
Then, Jorm steadied himself and stood up, speaking softly, "Take this man to our temporary cells...He will undoubtedly be one of the first matters we discuss at the Koagrad Peace Talks...Let's see what the rest of Koagrad has to say about this..."
OOC Notes
The ambassadors were seated in the lecture hall - the closest semblance to a senatorial meeting house that could be found. The veil of action had disintegrated, and most, if not all, were coming to the shared, but still unspoken, realization that they knew nothing of the ambassadorial trade, nor what force had moved then from their home sectors to Koagrad. Still, the ambassadors did their best to maintain the pretense of knowledge and experience as they spoke amongst themselves.
A stocky man dressed in poorly fitting and unnecessarily flowery garments walked to the lecture podium and with great apprehension addressed the crowd.
"Guys... uhm, Ambassadors, please attend me. I am Felp Mehjar, engine- Director of the Koagrad Peace Talks."
He let his unease fester in a long pause. A grunt from an ambassador roused him to continue.
"We are here today because, uhm, we need to determine what we will do. We can... declare independence, unite, or... return to Verdan Rule."
He shrunk back as the yelling commenced.
OOC Notes
Major General Berthold Gregor glared out the window, as though he could see the proceedings from the Eurovan Capital Building. This building, the closest thing to a 'palace' that could be found in the time since Eurova had split off from Verdanus, had once been the building that housed the colony's governor.
"We should have been sent to Koagrad," hissed a female voice. He turned around to look at his counterpart, Major General Selvaria Lorien, as she spoke. She was sitting at a desk, her booted feet rested on the desk. "That incompetent fool that was sent isn't even an ambassador."
"Be glad knowing that everyone gathering there is an incompetent fool," Gregor laughed harshly as he limped away from the window, leaning on his cane. "Not one person there has any previous experience in government or diplomacy."
"They will be deciding on the fate of our nations," Selvaria glared at Gregor as she slid her feet from atop the desk. "For this most important of matters, surely one of us should have been sent to represent Eurova."
"And what would you support, I wonder?" Gregor asked in a mockingly curious tone.
"Independence, of course," Selvaria snapped. "Unite with those idiot nations? Eurova deserves to be independent, and all those who attempt to challenge its soveriegnty must be grinded from existence."
Gregor gave another harsh laugh.
"Dramatic as ever, Selvaria..." he mused as he glanced back out the window. "I can only hope those fools can make the right decisions..."
OOC Notes
“Jemsen’s explanation bordered on the supernatural – as though a demon had posessed him. Crazy!”
He sat down at Jemsen’s desk.
“But the reports tell of rebellion planetwide – he couldn't be the only one affected. But see, I’m fine! Yet, who else might go the way of Jemsen? And who did we send to Koagrad – what if he breaks down too?”
He shuffled some papers, but no answer came.
“You know, someone is behind all of this, and he has a plan. The way I see it, we can either break down, or keep fighting and following that plan. I say we keep fighting, since Jemsen tried the other way – haha – and look how that turned out!”
Ironically, there was no one in the room to appreciate his joke.
OOC Notes
Selvaria stood up suddenly, one hand balled in a fist in front of her chest.
"I can't leave it to that fool to make the right decision."
She turned to Berthold Gregor, who leaned on his cane as he gazed at her.
"So what do you plan on doing?" Gregor asked in his harsh voice. "Not bomb the place or something, I hope."
In contradiction of his last two words, he chuckled, as though it would be quite entertaining.
"Of course not." Selvaria snapped, turning towards the door. "I'm going to Koagrad. With somone as powerful and commanding as I am amongst those foolish masses, they are certain to rally to me."
She swept the door open, and walked out, as she did so, saying:
"Please send a message to the meeting place in Koagrad. Eurova will be represented by Major General Selvaria Lorien."
Gregor stared at her back as the door shut, and he turned back to the window.
"This should be interesting..."
The message was sent, informing the ambassadors that Selvaria was on her way, and soon after, she would arrive.
((If this messes with the plotline, please tell me and I'll change this))
OOC Notes
"Don't worry about it. If anything goes wrong, it'll be Jemsen's head."
"Are you daft man? Jemsen's gone off his rocker - Rand's the one giving orders now."
"Rand? Wasn't he a mechanic before? How is he qualified?"
"I think he worked the harvester, actually. I see what you mean though. This whole mess is going to get us killed."
They were relieved by a less outspoken pair. A harvester op now a rebel leader? Something had motivated such a drastic change, Vanco thought, but only in some people. He and the guards seemed fine.
"Well damn. I'd bet that none of them are Verdans."
OOC Notes
She walked up through the hall; as she did so, everyone went silent, staring at her. A few ambassadors knew her; one of the second in commands of Eurova, Major General Selvaria Lorien.
She stood up at the lecture podium, and glared around at the 'ambassadors', who all stared at her in awe.
"What is this argument over the fate of Tertius?" she hissed angrily. "Why do we argue over this? The answer should be clear. For so many years, Verdanus has forced you all to work so that the lazy and incompetent of Verdanus can benefit. Ally with Verdanus? Have you no will to work for yourselves?" She glared around, allowing her words to sink in.
OOC Notes
"The problem that no one has bothered to voice, and I'm sure is instrumental to both the decision we make together, as well as the personal decisions we will make for our nations, is this."
Silence had begun to accumulate, and the audience was his.
"I, for one, feel as though my actions were not my own for the past two weeks. I have never before considered revolution, yet have acted in it. And after having several conversations, most of you feel this way, and even suspect the same of your self-appointed superiors."
There were murmurs of assent, but the floor remained his.
"We cannot return to how things were - what has happened has too much momentum. We can either succumb to infighting, only to fall and be forced to Verdan rule, or we can unite... under a common government."
Before the arguments for freedom resurfaced, he concluded.
"My nation would follow, but not behind a leader who has been... affected."
OOC Notes
"You wish for everyone here to unite under a common government? Look around you. Just moments ago, everyone was arguing in chaos. And in a few moments, argument will probably reign again."
Her voice boomed across the hall; the voice of a true speaker. Attention immediately returned to her.
"Do you think union will stop the Verdans from attempting to destroy our sovereignty? On the contrary. Union can only help the Verdans. You claim," she turned to Ponan, glaring at the man predatorily. "that we will succumb to infighting without union. Yet as the state of this hall proved before I arrived, infighting will be all that you will see if this union of yours comes about."
She turned back to the 'ambassadors'.
"What are all of your professions? Engineers, miners, workers; none of you with any experience in government. Eurova is ruled by those who know their trade well. I would not allow that state to be changed by a union."
OOC Notes
Observing from the shadows, a suited man exited the room.
Turning to Selvaria, the Ambassador noted her weapon and harshly refrained himself from creating any reason to provoke her. Instead, he tactfully moved toward a more dispassionate argument. "Floragyas is a nation of Trade. We make money via the importation and exportation of products whether it be through planets or simply across cities. It is true, we may not have much experience in world-wide politics. However, we do have our own governments, which have done well despite your claims of infighting. Floragyas concurs. If this is to become a union, we do not want to be changed unless we completely affirm such events or actions."
OOC Notes
She turned now to the other man.
"I said nothing of infighting within each individual nation," she said harshly. "Look about you. You were all arguing chaotically moments ago, and while you did so Verdanus may have, at that moment, been mobilising. No one wants their government changed so soon. An alliance against Verdanus may work out initially, but a union across Tertius? The entire thing would eventually fragment back into bickering nations."

Re: [OOC] Verdanus and Tertius: War of the World
Verdanus, a planet so named long ago for its verdant forests and beautiful natural landscapes, the spawning pool of humanity, has succumbed to the various technological revolutions.
Good luck!
And the rules are:
This roleplay is meant to read more like a science fiction novel than the average one-character-each roleplay.
0) The plot is more important than any character.
1) Write no more than 1024 characters per post: no more than ~ one paperback page at a time.
2) Make every detail count - don't fluff it up, but do make it sound interesting.
3) Any character that appears in the Characters tab is reserved by that player.
4) Any character NOT reserved is then free reign to roleplay as anyone wants.
5) Avoid contradictions, and correct them if you are made aware of them.
6) Spelling and grammar make everyone happy.
7) Talk things out with others over PM or in OOC when involving their characters.
Very few details have been set into place. Very few characters have been named. You, the players, are responsible for filling in the gaps. Take the time to read through everything in the Activity tab before you submit a character or add your own reply - updates are frequent, storylines are many, and the plot thickens every day!
If things don't make too much sense, please as questions :D
Also, the Activity tab does not send out notifications of updates to players, so its up to you guys to check it as frequently as you intend to post. I post approximately once a day.

Never mind. That was stupid of me. xD I thought you were referring to the Places tab.
Re: [OOC] Verdanus and Tertius: War of the World
Just click the Activity tab to read through everything that has happened so far - mostly my own "episodes" from both a while back and recently, as well as Shazeio7's post. Then click the Reply to this roleplay >> link and write out your post, and pick a location from the dropdown with "Where?" next to it.

I can't seem to find the IC topic.

Beam technology can either be bulkier than projectile guns, or it can be more compact. It depends on how you guys write it in, since I have strayed away from that subject so far IC :)

But projectile weapons (since they're much more advanced than those on Earth) could be favored for their accuracy, simplicity (it would take a highly trained expert to simply use one), rate of fire (in certain cases), and handling (beam weapons could be much bulkier).
I'd assume beam weapons would be more complex than just pulling a trigger. And it'd probably be a security risk to use one on-board a ship, lest you want to blast holes through every wall. xD
There are a lot of pros and cons when it comes to beam weaponry. Wouldn't the active use of both be simpler?
Mind if I assume the identity of Devil's Advocate?
Beam weapons often aren't much more destructive than bullets themselves. It all depends on the intensity of the beam. I know how to make a powerful solar death ray using only the projector screen from a TV. It was able to light that particular TV's remote on fire. Then there are the less powerful beams, the ones you know as laser sights. Those are used to guide a gunner's aim, and are not particularly destructive unless shot straight into a living being's eyes for a prolonged period of time. There are Russian satellites that can shoot laser beams powerful enough to snipe missiles out of the sky.
As for your stance on projectile weapons, you must take into consideration that projectile weapons aren't more accurate than laser weapons. You have to take in account for bullet drop, wind speeds, and leading a moving target. A laser, which travels at the speed of light, are much more quicker, therefore much more accurate. This immediately eliminates leading, wind speeds, and bullet drop all in one fell swoop. I agree, however, on how laser weapons will likely be much more intricate and complicated as apposed to bullet weapons. However, efficiency is much better than simplicity, don't you agree? The pros seem to outweigh the con's here.
While laser weapons are always bulkier, they offer a much more reliable (if slow) rate of destruction. Bullets may have more strength in the short run, but a laser can simply power through most stuff with enough intensity. Strangely enough, beam weapons are not much more than pulling a trigger. While the gun WILL be much bulkier (due to the necessary mechanics to focus and intensify the beam) the general use will probably be the same as a projectile gun.
Lasers also take time to blow a hole in every wall. It's not star wars, lol. I also don't think lasers will even have the unpredictability to discharge when not in use, due to the potential damage. The makers will make sure not to let it happen.

Oh.
Well, now I know not to use video-games as a reference.
You guys know a lot about this stuff, so I'll just ask this: Would the use of projectile weapons be useful, and actively used in a society that has laser weaponry? I mean, obviously untrained rebel groups will have to resort to that, but what about regular armed forces?

And Shiva, your idea sounds excellent. I've an idea for both our characters, as a matter of fact. I'll PM you.
