Introduction

Prologue

Dear Reader

This reporter Yuki Akihawa of Tokyo Daily. Im writing what may be the last article in my entire life. Yesterday the Tokyo siege line fell to the Dark Ones assault. The shadow reapers have been sighted as close as 11 miles from here, and artillery is expected to hit our position any second now. However, i keep my courage up, as a member of humanity i will sell my life dearly. This is Yuki Akihawa. The will of the Japanese people be with you fellow members of mankind.



The paper clip is picked up by a heavy leathered hand, a soft grunt escaping the soldiers lips. Looking at the paper he took notice of it's date. It was written 12 years ago, written a week before Tokyo fell. For it to have survived this long without becoming unreadable, it must have been kept by someone. Now it's year 13 of the invasion, and Tokyo along other cities once more belong to us, the humans. But it was not always like this. The sky opened up and rained death upon. Black, unforgiving death in form of alien invaders. Around him heavy machinery heaved forth a deadly payload into the ruins of Tokyo. He sighed, building this up again would not be easy. The war kept on its endless cycle of grinding down the remaining Dark Ones, countering whatever inside threats appeared as they did so.

Background; Conflict.

-Dark Ones and the destruction of our societies.-

We were not prepared, in our arrogance we had believed out self superior an alone in the universe. We were proven wrong, our cities burned and our cultures all but destroyed. The price for our decadence was rape, murder and utter domination from he ones refereed to as the "Dark Ones", A race of humanoids resembling very much the creatures described in different horror novels. They had weapons and means of destruction we didn't even begin to fathom: Entire cities razed by the hands of a searingly teaming mass of war machines like we had never seen seen before. They came pouring from dark portals in the sky, screaming in their horrid language and a rain of fire followed all around the world, laying waste to New york, Tokyo, Berlin, Paris, London, Beijing, Delhi and just about every bigger city we ever constructed.

But just as we was at the brink of utter destruction we were given the means to fight back. A strange alloy of seemingly living metals were given to us by a man who's intentions were most unclear and who's name was oddly hard to recall afterwards. There have been numerous investigation to where he came from and on which orders he acted but at the moment it is not the biggest concern. From the alloy we created giant mechanized battle suits that acted like a part of the human body the metal was provided to us by our strange benefactor and was shown to be present in our enemies war machines as well, meaning our means to acquire it on our own was to gather the scrap metal from each tiresome conflict. None the less the intruduction allowed us fight back and turn the tide.


-The ReBuild and ReTakening: The Risk of new discoveries.-

As it stands 80% of earths landmass is under human control and the rest is under control off the dark ones with humanity slowly but shurely taking it back. The strange metal referred to as Emulibran is also implemented in smaller doses to build power armors; smaller suits for infantry. The metal however links one to the craft or suit in such ways that the mental degradation and harm is horrendous, leaving many insane from the horrible strain.

While one would think humanity would stand united in the face of this horror we don't- as a matter of fact their are those that welcome the dark ones in an insane declaration that humanity finnaly met it's rightful reckoning and entire cults have risen to arms fighting humanity from within. These people are referred to as "Scions" and are to be captured, interrogated and killed.


ROLES


-The Endless battle. The mechs and soldiers-

The combat mechs are very similar to mankind in shape. They are built with arms and legs in an extremely flexible and almost alive metal and even has a head. The pilot sits in a cockpit situated inside the chest area. Know that the entire machine is linked to the pilots body and that is controlled by the mind just as much as the controlls and is seemingly semi-sentient, a bigger hit will hurt the pilot aswell.

Even If the pilots get all the headlines one must never forget the soldiers, they to carry the strange alloy for the most part and they are still the mayor backbone of each army and their role is far less enviable then the mechs. To fight the Dark Ones means to fight savage beasts that are able to rip a soldiers into shreds in the matter of seconds..

-Victims of the darkness. The Guides-

There are those have risen from the ashes and remained when everyone else fled. These are the guides, invaluable experts of their regions and possessing practical knowledge in the manner of which the dark ones operate. Usually employed as recognizance scouts by the military or advisors in field experiments. These men and women do not have the luxury of being well protected. In turn, they are armed with their wit and ability to navigate anywhere, and find the enemy before they find you.

-The war in the shadows: Agents and Cultists -

The mechs are needed to combat the Dark Ones war machines and soldiers to combat their spawns, but there is another war raging as well, one that take place between the the loyal humans and the deceitful cultists. The cultists that serve the enemy best have even been granted a kind of monstrous symbiosis that make them stronger then the common man and special agents are our biggest chance in the battle against these creatures. Armed with their wits and top technology these people wage war in the shadows, cutting the harmfull activities of the Scions short.

-The New Frontier: Scientists and Psykers-

With each new conflict new research and more breakthroughs follow. In this case the scientist play as vital part as the ones that once created the nuclear device wich finally ended the second world war. The research mostly encompass the strange alloy and means of producing it aswell as more powerful ways to destroy the symbiosis given to the cultivists.

The biggest breakthrough aside form the mechs that dominate modern warfare are the psykers, people that can tap into a whole other plane of consciousness, and use this to strike at the Darkn Ones from miles apart, attacking the mind of enemy generals and officers by sheer mental prowess. So far the means are commonly but not constricted to: Astral projection, telepathy, telekinesis and in rare instances control over electronics, synapses and mind. So called Elemtkinetics like Fire starters and Electromancers have appeared as well. although their powers are much harder to control and more for direct combat.

Unfortunately the key to unlock this is the injections of highly dangerous experimental drugs. Furthermore the other plane holds secrets of it own and one may encounter things there not meant for human eyes or minds.

-The sacrifice of science: Hybrids-

Revealed only lately are The hybrids. A hybrid have been infused with the rawest form of Emulibran, and have to go trought the most horrific of tests and experiments. The metals capabilities to shape into natural forms is directly affected by their brains. This allows them to become something of a living weapon, creating claws, blades and even shooting metal shrapnel from their bodies. The price is however, far to inhumane. The average life time for a Hybrid is 1 year after the initial procedure before their body shuts down. The subjects are all dying men and women who have nothing to loose but everything to win.


-- The enemy -

Dark ones are a breed of unknown origins and while humanity have been fighting them for years much is yet to be discovered regarding these creatures. They seem posses a numerous kinds of abilities ranging from trivial to bizarre, they are mostly humanoid and posses a slick, sickly dark skin. What we do know is that they posses a grotesquely strong physique and a vile nature. There are many shapes and forms that they may take and new ones are every now and then popping up. There are however some more common types that humanity encounters:

Ghouls: Given their name because their appearance. These are actually not undead but humans that are controlled by a banshee. The victims eyes will turn black and their breathing sporadic at best, They usually do not last long, their coordination very feeble and their aim bad. They are mostly used as meat shields for the banshee.

Berserker: Brutal and deadly beasts that are roughly the size of a large gorilla. Their skin is leathery and large tusks protrude from their mouths. They are the manual labour for Dark ones and also the first ones to lay down their lives in battle.

Banshees: It can be argued whether or not these are females. They are the most human in their shape not counting the ghouls. They are all psychic to a degree, usually able to brake into the heads of panicking soldiers and remote control them. They are no strangers to combat however and incredibly fast on their feet while swinging long sharp blades that make short work of most armour.

Soldiers: The main bulk of the enemy seem to consist of these. Slightly smaller then the average human and hunchbacked they don themselves in Armour made of Emulibran and wields advanced weaponry that makes human weapons pale in comparison.

Gigants: Large, hulking beasts, some more then two stories tall. They are the main reason humanity found themselves at the brink of destruction. These living weapons are made of flesh but appears to have been merged with huge amounts of Emulibran. They have guns hidden within them and its hard to expect just what they will throw at you.

Reavers: These are flying beasts, roughly the size of a average civilian helicopter. Much like warped hummingbirds in the sense that they can hover and stay afloat by the use of large wings that beat at insane speeds. Most of bodies and especially their wings are pure Emulibran. They attack by shooting 30 cm spikes of Emulibran at their enemies, devestating even the thickest of armor. Luckily they are few and far in between.. They seem to be able to actually generate Emulibran within them, a process which is yet to be researched.

Monarchs: Not much is known about the Monarchs. So far three have been encountered and killed, each time with a lot of men dead. The Monarchs are beings that vaguely resembles humans. Named after the fact that they wear what looks like a crown of Emulibran these beings are able to wield devastating psychic powers. Unlike banshees these do not control you, if you panic, they merely reach intoo your head and shuts down everything, efficiently killing you. They are alos known to sport telekinetic powers on such scale that they can pluck helicopters out of the sky. To make things worse is the fact that their body is encased with a thick layers of Emulibran, making them almost impossible to as much as scratch without heavy ordinance. There is a known weakness however. The crown, if damaged, disables it from using its psychic powers.

As stated at the beginning, these beasts are not limited to these forms, and the shapes wich each type takes vary from region to region.

The Geography


While mankind have retaken most of the world there are still strongholds and danger zones that the dark ones inhabit. These are designated either red or yellow. Red being the heavily infested and most dangerous while the yellow is less heavily infected but still a hot zone. These are some of those areas. The areas will be looked into in greater detail in the area subsection.

New York: RED
New York was hit the worst, Now reduced to a mouldering crater that positively teems with Dark Ones the New York zone is a constant reminder of the human struggle

Tokyo: Yellow
While being mostly clean and in the process of being inhabited anew by humanity it is still a war zone, The northern city borders are still largely unsafe due to dedicated resistance from the local Dark Ones.

London: Green

The new capital and HQ of the UHC is located in London, a city that despite it's ruin rebuilt itself in an astounding short time.

Most of north-eastern America is considered unsafe with small red zones and large yellow zones declared. Asia is mostly recovered, as is Europe. Australia and the surrounding Islands is completely free of Dark Ones. Africa is mostly safe as well, with only Madagascar as red zone.

Larger parts of South America is declared red as the jungles may hold any number of Dark ones.

A small pocket of Dark Ones have fortified former city of Paris but are faltering. It's believed they use the tunnels underneath Paris as breeding chambers.



Weapons.


All weapons used are in some way augmented to better fight Dark ones. Mostly it's trough ammunition. But human technology in general has become rather advanced. Super compressed heat guns that are able to melt most things, laser guided mini missiles, nano engineered grenades, cloaking fields etc. Depending on your role your character have access to different kinds of gear. Scientist are the ones most likely to carry experimental things and highest possible technology. Gents have more stable exclusive hightech gear aswell, such as mentioned cloaking gear. Soldiers have access to most weapons. Mechs and their pilots are well equipped, although the pilot carry little in way of weaponry outside the Mech. Psychers tend not to bother with guns.

heavy weapons: Larger guns such grenade launcher, heavy machine guns etc etc

Medium weapon: Rifles, smgs etc etc

Tech/Grenades: grenades, cloaking field etc etc

sidearm: Small guns

Close combat: Sword, knifes etc etc

-Current situation, our tale begins-

The united human coalition (UHC) have complete control control of all military personal and have been preparing for the final push to drive the Dark Ones out of existence for some time now. Most of the able battle personal have been gathered around the borders. However, it is a small group of mechanized infantry and a few agents that will unknowingly play the key role in this conflict as they stumble across something during a routine mission regarding some cultist sightings.

Thus our grim tale begins- at the foothills of Dead Acres cemetery, situated on a small island were some cultists have been arming themselves for raids inland. A small unit (That is you people) have been dispatched to look into the matter and if opportunity presents itself, destroy the threat.

Equipment: (Note Different roles uses different equipment. Divide the listing into Tech/Functions and Weapons/Powers)
  1. Soldiers may carry 4 grenades of choice They also have a light exosuit with 3 functions of their own choice I.e grapplin hook, communication scramblers, set of proxy mines etc etc
  2. Agent: Agents carry 1a specific, powerfull piece tech. This tech can be anything from cloaking devices to nanowire and bullet deflecting belts.
  3. Guide: Guides start with 1 medium or light weapon. However, they may also start with something unique: Knowledge. As guides they know a lot more then the average soldier and in some cases more then any agent and scientist.They may be civilians, but they are survivors also. Knowledge may be region specific post-war geography, hidden passages, hidden weapon stashes and shelters, even rarely known weaknesses in the enemies.
  4. Scientist: Starts with two pieces of powerfull tech. Like the agent the uses may vary
  5. Psykers starts with stimulant drugs to jump start or alter their powers.The effects of the drugs are up to you.
  6. Mechs pilots Specify what kind of mechs the have here: The looks are up to you but the general guidelines are these: May have 1 special function (cloaking field, shields etc etc Belongs to one of the classes
  7. Mech class:
Assault Heavy: Heavy hitter class. Massive machines that are a good 5 meter tall. Slower, heavily equipped. Unlikely to be used in hard terrain.
Assault Light: Smaller then the heavy, still wit firepower to back it up. 4 meter tall. A bit more versatile and have a easier time to travel harsh terrain.
Scout: Lightweight, about 3 meters insize, minimum armor and weapons with but with greater versatility. Equipped with light wapons nad able to traverse terrain with no difficulty.
Artillery: Heavy duty firepower, capable of firing at enemies from great distances. Approximetly 5 meters in height. Slower then all other and with less armor then the heavy.

Weapons: (Note Different roles uses different weapons)

  1. Soldiers: Most forms of standard tech weaponry, Sniper rifles, Rockets, assault weapons and machine guns for distance. Some may employ sharpbladed weaponry for close combat as well.
  2. Mechs: The Pilot may be equipped with light Smg weapons and handguns only. Depending on the mechs role its weapons range from heavy machine guns to rail guns to missilepods.
  3. Agents:Carry light, easily concealed weaponry thats often experimental and very powerful for it's small size.
  4. Scientists: Tend to carry very light guns, might be exprimental Not really made for combat their weaponry is often nonexistent.
  5. Psykers: Do not depend on powers, but employ a psychic power: Telekenisis, pyrokenis and Elecrokinisis are all viable examples.
[*]Guides: Uses light to medium, standard tech weapons. Such include revolvers and rifles. Tend to also carry melee weapons on them.

* Short about roles: While the roles dictate a lot in terms of overall tone. Be creative andm ake your character its own. Customize your character and pick out weapons and specify them. I as a GM I love to read what my players can come up with

* Structure. This rp will be divided into parts, Each part is named "Operation: (name), then phase (1-4). The start will be named "Operation Graverobber".

* Godmodding. I will not tolerate this. When facing another PC you must communicate and and work together in your post to prevent one form unjustly controlling the other. When facing numerous "mobs" like standard enemy grunts you are ofcourse allowed to shoot and hit without checking. I trust your judgment to make things interesting without resorting to auto hitting and dodging everything.

* Posting: I expect an effort to be shown. While i do not demand several a4 format pages, i do wish to see more then a single paragraph or god forbid,a one linee. Also, mind the structure. Don't use chatlogs, write it as one would write an excerpt of a book.

* Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling. I won't be a grammarnazi, i just like to read without having to start over.

*Time line: Starting from invasion:

Dark year 0: Invasion starts
Dark year 2; New york falls, grand sized meteor crashes the city into ruin
Dark year 5; Tokyo Falls., last ditched efforts in Europe using prototype Weaponry
Dark year 6: Invasion halted, the struggle to take earth back begins
Dark Year; 10 Tokyo is reclaimed, Hybrid Agents project is officially recognized and revealed.

This is the auto-generated OOC topic for the roleplay "War in total Darkness"

This is the Ooc topic for War in total darkness. Its a Apocalyptic war saga dealing with the fate of a few brave soals admist the wake of a horrible invasion that brought humanity to it's knees. Starting at the Dead Acres Cemetary where a special ops team are to strike at a den for cultists the story will span across the globe, from the British isles, to Paris, to Tokyo and New York amongst other places.
