Setting

The WINGS base itself is very secure. The WINGS warriors are only permitted to go through about half of it. The part they can navigate includes their rooms, a training facility, a few classrooms, a library, bathrooms, an athletic facility, a performance hall (this is where the government makes the warriors demonstrate their abilities to visitors, a kitchen, and a lounge that has a very large television, video games, a pool table, a ping pong table and just about any form of entertainment imaginable. The rest of the base includes labs, where they analyze the blood of the warriors, offices, rooms for the other permanent residents of the base, a meeting room, and a prison-like facility. The prison is specially fortified against the abilities of all in the WINGS program. When they misbehave, they are locked in their. It's appearance is just a white room with a mattress.

Peri lay quietly in a forest. The jungle sounds around her were soothing and accompanied the lush greenery around her perfectly. Happily, she stood and padded across the forest floor, enjoying the feeling of nature between her toes. As she walked, she broke through a wall of shrubbery and came to a river. Excitedly, she looked downriver and saw a waterfall. The roaring sound of it made her heart beat faster with anticipation, calling her over. With a wicked grin, Peri began to run towards the waterfall. Just when she reached the end of the river, she hopped on a stone at the top of the fall and jumped, swan-diving past the rushing water and relishing the feeling of gravity. The river below her was rushing upwards, and she dangerously waited until she knew she would smack down into the water before releasing her wings and pumping them. She swooped upward, and as her body began to warm under the beautiful sunlight, she pumped her wings, rising higher and higher....

Then, the beeping began, pulling her out of the illusion. Sighing, Peri pulled her subconscious back into her body and tugged of the 3D helmet on her head. She sat alone in the activity room, so no one had noticed that she had broken the rules and tried to use her 'abilities' in the 3D world she had created. Listless, Peri put the equipment away and walked towards the couch. No doubt, one of her so-called-guardians would come rushing in soon to scold her for her behavior. She might as well catch up on some TV while she waited.

Right when she folded herself daintily on the couch and picked up the remote, the door slammed open. With a sigh, Peri looked wide-eyed up at an angry face, that of her least favorite "guardian", Erik Phillips. His face was sweaty and red from both his anger and the exertion if rushing to find her. He glared as he huffed for breath.

"This is not the first time we had this problem with you," he hissed, "When are you going to learn?" Peri looked away to hide a frustrated tear. She hated this institution. She couldn't even have freedom in the virtual world.

"I'm sorry, sir," she replied softly. Her soft manner always stopped them from being too angry. Her sadness at being chained seemed to them as a sadness for doing wrong, so they mistakenly thought she was truly sorry for disobeying. Erik paused long enough to catch his breath and softened his tone.

"Don't do it again," he warned, and he stalked out of the room. Peri pulled her knees to her chest and wept onto them, hating the life she was forced to lead. She wanted to stretch her wings and fly into the sky without apprehension of being punished. She wanted to be able to talk to the people outside. She had never met anyone outside of WINGS. The world of WINGS was getting too lonely and too small to bear.

Dr. James sat up and glared thoughtfully at the test tubes before him. All these years of research, and they still hadn't even tapped the secret behind the abilities of the WINGS subjects. No matter how much he tested their DNA, he could not find the exact reason for the distinct difference between the subjects and regular human beings. Sure, he could find irregularities, mutations in their genes, but he could not understand why...why these special individuals could possess such amazing power and the rest of humanity couldn't. Dr. James pushed away from the table in frustration, his wheeling chair gliding him all the way to the opposite desk. Rubbing his neck, he stood tiredly. He's been working for three days straight, because he'd thought he'd found the key to improving humanity, but it turned out to be another fluke. Now, exhausted and hungry, he would have to get some rest and then get some more DNA samples from the subjects.

He cringed inwardly at that, his guilt swelling again. He knew they hated it. He'd heard that not only had Peri tried to fly while in a virtual reality simulation, but Fintan had also tried to escape again. Each of the subjects' attempts to be liberated in some way were growing increasingly frequent.
And why wouldn't they? said the voice in his head. Day by day, they are trapped in this miserable place. Year after year, they are forced to reside in a prison with the responsibility to save the world if ever a problem arises. Would you just sit around and look pretty, happily allowing scientists to prick and prod at you? Dr. James winced at the words that had come to play in his mind so much lately. He needed to shove his conscious away and continue to happily and diligently work on the project. He was a scientist after all and didn't have time for such scruples, but...

Aside from the abilities they'd been endowed, the subjects were the same as any other person. They laughed, and they cried...Lately, they cried more often then not, and Dr. James had never been one to appreciate that somebody's tears had been caused by his actions. Restless, Dr. James stalked out of the lab and moved towards the WINGS residence. For now, he could warn Peri and Fintan to behave better. Determined, Dr. James did not stop until he reached Fintan's room. It was heavily guarded, but as a scientist, he was allowed to access the 'subjects' whenever needed. He walked right past the guards and through the door. Fintan was lying on his bed with his eyes closed, so Dr. James stood silently, at a loss of what to do now that he'd arrived.

Dr. James gasped in pain as the images of Fintan's past flashed through his mind. It was so horrible, so emotionally trying, that he could completely understand why Fintan would hate everyone, but it was getting a bit hard to bear. He knew that if he cried out, if he expressed his pain through his voice, guards would come rushing in, and Fintan would face horrible punishment...but Dr. James did not want to hurt these people anymore. He had been on the fence before, but the images Fintan now showed him had convinced him that what WINGS stood for was wrong, and these people should not be prisoners because of their abilities.

Peri sensed her powers being used. She sensed the slight moment of weakness as the abilities that were entangled with her strength drained a little bit. Confused, she stood and followed to where the draining of her strength was going to. After a moment, she suddenly felt an urgency and hurried after her power. As she weaved through the hallway, she came upon a room heavily guarded. She knew her power was there, and she knew it was Fintan's room, but if she alerted the guards of what was happening, she knew Fintan would be punished. As a fellow prisoner of this horrid place, she could never cause that to happen. Instead, Peri caused a distraction down the hall by throwing a pen with her mind and snuck into the room while they were turned the other way. When she got inside, she saw Dr. James and Fintan, and she knew immediately that Fintan was using her power to show Dr. James something, but she couldn't put her finger on it. She couldn't quite see what was going on in their minds.

"Fintan?" she whispered hesitantly, "What's going on? What are you doing?"
