Then, the beeping began, pulling her out of the illusion. Sighing, Peri pulled her subconscious back into her body and tugged of the 3D helmet on her head. She sat alone in the activity room, so no one had noticed that she had broken the rules and tried to use her 'abilities' in the 3D world she had created. Listless, Peri put the equipment away and walked towards the couch. No doubt, one of her so-called-guardians would come rushing in soon to scold her for her behavior. She might as well catch up on some TV while she waited.
Right when she folded herself daintily on the couch and picked up the remote, the door slammed open. With a sigh, Peri looked wide-eyed up at an angry face, that of her least favorite "guardian", Erik Phillips. His face was sweaty and red from both his anger and the exertion if rushing to find her. He glared as he huffed for breath.
"This is not the first time we had this problem with you," he hissed, "When are you going to learn?" Peri looked away to hide a frustrated tear. She hated this institution. She couldn't even have freedom in the virtual world.
"I'm sorry, sir," she replied softly. Her soft manner always stopped them from being too angry. Her sadness at being chained seemed to them as a sadness for doing wrong, so they mistakenly thought she was truly sorry for disobeying. Erik paused long enough to catch his breath and softened his tone.
"Don't do it again," he warned, and he stalked out of the room. Peri pulled her knees to her chest and wept onto them, hating the life she was forced to lead. She wanted to stretch her wings and fly into the sky without apprehension of being punished. She wanted to be able to talk to the people outside. She had never met anyone outside of WINGS. The world of WINGS was getting too lonely and too small to bear.

He cringed inwardly at that, his guilt swelling again. He knew they hated it. He'd heard that not only had Peri tried to fly while in a virtual reality simulation, but Fintan had also tried to escape again. Each of the subjects' attempts to be liberated in some way were growing increasingly frequent. And why wouldn't they? said the voice in his head. Day by day, they are trapped in this miserable place. Year after year, they are forced to reside in a prison with the responsibility to save the world if ever a problem arises. Would you just sit around and look pretty, happily allowing scientists to prick and prod at you? Dr. James winced at the words that had come to play in his mind so much lately. He needed to shove his conscious away and continue to happily and diligently work on the project. He was a scientist after all and didn't have time for such scruples, but...
Aside from the abilities they'd been endowed, the subjects were the same as any other person. They laughed, and they cried...Lately, they cried more often then not, and Dr. James had never been one to appreciate that somebody's tears had been caused by his actions. Restless, Dr. James stalked out of the lab and moved towards the WINGS residence. For now, he could warn Peri and Fintan to behave better. Determined, Dr. James did not stop until he reached Fintan's room. It was heavily guarded, but as a scientist, he was allowed to access the 'subjects' whenever needed. He walked right past the guards and through the door. Fintan was lying on his bed with his eyes closed, so Dr. James stood silently, at a loss of what to do now that he'd arrived.

Peri sensed her powers being used. She sensed the slight moment of weakness as the abilities that were entangled with her strength drained a little bit. Confused, she stood and followed to where the draining of her strength was going to. After a moment, she suddenly felt an urgency and hurried after her power. As she weaved through the hallway, she came upon a room heavily guarded. She knew her power was there, and she knew it was Fintan's room, but if she alerted the guards of what was happening, she knew Fintan would be punished. As a fellow prisoner of this horrid place, she could never cause that to happen. Instead, Peri caused a distraction down the hall by throwing a pen with her mind and snuck into the room while they were turned the other way. When she got inside, she saw Dr. James and Fintan, and she knew immediately that Fintan was using her power to show Dr. James something, but she couldn't put her finger on it. She couldn't quite see what was going on in their minds.
"Fintan?" she whispered hesitantly, "What's going on? What are you doing?"
