Introduction
Josephine -I was diagnosed with Leukemia. A cancer of the cells and after many studies and treatments and cell transplants I wanted none of it. I do not mind dying. What I mind is leaving you behind...
sister-I saw her suffer so many times that after a while I could not stop crying and when she asked to live her final summer by the sea, I stormed out and cried myself to sleep...if only she wanted to be cured...
Josephine's love interest- Before I met her, I only cared about myself. I did what i wanted and pissed off who i wanted and to hell with anyone else. I had problems so what.
Anyone else...
written in the sand my life was
and the waves would come and wash it away.
I saw it being eroded slowly until nothing of me was left behind
and all of you would try to write my life back on the sand
but once more the waves would come
Until i was tired and rested my head upon the water...and then I went under
And your cries were muffled...and I rested
I finally rested

Tears streamed down her face. She had dreamed again of the beach. Of the waves crashing against the sand and taking her away. She pushed herself away from the mirror and sat on her bed. She felt very weak . She no longer wanted to get up from her bed and the tests did not work.
It was the year of 1998 and Josephine had lived approximately sixteen years and she no longer wanted to suffer.
Her mother found her laying in a fetal position at the end of her bed.
"Jo...Jo what's wrong" She said kneeling net to her.
Josephine turned away and whispered between choked sobs "what's not wrong mama...I am dying ever so slowly and nothing works. I want to die happy mom.."
Her mother was crying "don't...please don't say that"
Josephine sat up and trough tears said "give me this summer...no more treatments...no more anything...just give me this summer...I want to die near the beach"
Her mother slumped near the bed and hugged herself "I can't give you up"
"You must...you must let me go...I want to die happy...I want to die with my family around me...there is nothing else...I am so tired mom..so tired"
There was a silence for a long time and Josephine rocked herself on the bed until her mother stood up and nodded her head "a summer at the beach...oh Jo...why? why?"
But Josephine just smiled.
--------------------
They arrived on may. The house was of two floors with a wide porch on the front and very close to the beach. It was a rental and her parents had pooled all their money to rent it for the whole summer. Her sister came unwillingly, rebelling against everything and would remark on anything with dry sarcasm. her little brother held Josephine's hand.
She had gone trough a rejuvenation some barely believed. Her hair was now blond and her face fresh but the bags were still there. She wore loose sundresses and when they arrived at their summer house, she grabbed a pail and ran out to meet the waves.
She spend the whole day collecting shells and wetting her feet. Her parents were watchful of her and when it began to grow dark she went inside.
The next few days they did not go to town but then growing reassured of her health they would leave her alone to meander about the beach collecting algae and stars and shells.
She wore a wide brimmed hat and barefoot she at on the sand making castles.
She had stopped crying a long time ago, now she just sat there, staring at the sea. With her finger she wrote out her name and the waves washed it away. She wrote it again and once more the waves came.
She stood up and walked down the beach leaving her house behind. Down she went passing sea grass and sea oats growing in the dunes. The sea spray lighted all round her. The wind pushed her skirt and her hair but she did not mind for the sun was hidden and it was very cool. She passed a little shanty just out in the beach. Maybe a hobo lived there.
There was a small boat out in the sea and someone was rowing it to shore. She stood solitary upon the sand and waited to see the person in the boat but then she became restless and turned away to the seagull flying about. Their cries were shrill but she welcomed them. From her pocket she pulled out a piece of bread and threw it at them. They all gathered about it and Jo laughed happily. She turned to the sea and the boat was closer "hey there" She cried out.

Once he was closer to the shore he put out his cigerette and jumped out of the boat and began to pool it onto shore, water splashing up onto his khaki shorts and white wife-beater. "Hey there" came a voice from behind him and Trystan jumped, half expecting to find the cops ready to give him another ticket for fishing without a license. It was perhaps the dumbest law he had ever heard of, needing a license to fish and he had just about had enough of cops trying to enforce it. "Listen I haven't done anything wrong, so why don't you just leave me the hell alone?" he snapped, turning around as he did so. What he found standing behind him was not a cope, but much to his surprise a beautiful young girl. He walked up closer to her before speaking "Look I am sorry, I didn't mean to snap. I thought........ I thought you were someone else."

Her steps were straight in a line with one foot in front of the other and her skirt fluttered with the wind. All over the beach her name was written in long loopy letters.
"Josephine"
The dunes were high with vines that grew purple flowers and sea grass and sea oats. The clouds were quickly moving across the bay with the song of the wind and the cries of the seagulls. She remained still her face was concentrated and finally she continued to move. Soon shouts were heard "Jo! Jo! Jo where are you?"
She looked as if she was about to flee , like a deer ready to spring but then her posture relaxed and she turned around.
"my parents can't seem to leave me alone" but her tone was light and cheery. She moved to where the shouts were coming from. She smiled at him apologetically.
"it seems we ruined your fishing trip"
Jo walked away reluctantly , wishing she could stay more and soak up the sun and feel the salty water on her skin. Her pail swung at her side and carefully she hefted it to her other hand.
"Coming Mama!"
"oh Jo I was so worried" Her mother called running down the strip of beach. She was wearing white caprice pants and a pink shirt "I been looking all over for you"
Josephine stopped as her mother checked her face, looked at her hands and inspected her all over "you should wear a sweater, the wind is cool and you could get sunburned"
Her mother turned to look at the boy standing by his boat "Oh hi! Sorry I am taking her now"
Jo followed her mom and her voice was clear and light as she reproached her mother "Oh I was all right mama. look I collected seashells and sand-dollars! Don't worry too much mama I was fine."
"You could get sick Jo" Her mothers voice turned stern.
"Now mama you promised me! You promised me!"
Jo said but now her voice was low and sad.
Her mother nodded her head and took her hand in hers.
All around them the water came to shore and took her name from the sand.

Shouting reached his hears and Trystan raised his eyes from the name that had repeatedly been traced in the sand. The girl muttered something about her parents, he was unable to make out the words but the soft cheery tone of her voice reached his ears. An older woman came running down the beach, a panicked expression on her face but when she saw the girl she calmed down slightly. The woman fussed at the girl before looking at Trystan to tell him she was taking the girl away now, to which he nodded in response. The woman seemed overly protective of the girl whom though she looked weak, was probably more than capable of taking care of herself on the beach. They walked away slowly, the girls hand encompassed by her mothers and he stood there for a moment watching them fade into the bright shining sun.
After a minute or two of just standing there, Trystan snapped back to reality and pulled the little boat completely out of the water and into the small shed he used to store the boat and his rod and real. The shack didn't really belong to anyone; it was just there which meant its space was there for the use of him. He began to walk down the strip of beach where the woman had come running from, it was a longer way to the crossing point he used to get onto the streets, but he could use the time to take another smoke. Lighting up another cigarette he began to walk down the beach his mind lost in thoughts of work, and family, and his street family. As he made his way down the beach he stumbled across a large flabby sun hat, identical to the one the girl he had met earlier had been wearing. He picked it up, unsure of what he was going to do with it and wanting to return it but unsure of where to return it to. He walked with the thing in hand, it flapping in the wind as he walked, and decided that he would bring it to the shack tomorrow in hopes the girl was there to return it too. He made his way to the crossing from the beach to the sidewalks and made the long walk to his part of town.
Upon entry to his area he was greeted by a tall black guy packing a small revolver. "Trystan, dawg. I got another job for you, I need it brought to the old warehouse on 32nd street by tonight." the man said, doing the usual greeting and dropping a small bag of white powder into the pocket of Trystan's khaki's. With a sigh Trystan pulled away "Jay why is it you've always got something you need me to do?" he asked with a smile before beginning to walk away. The young black man smiled "Don't worry dawg, payment on this one's pretty good! And nice hat, man really matches your personality" he teased before Trystan rounded the corner and walked up 5 flights of stairs to his family's apartment.

"Mom, dad says he is going to feed us eel tonight!" He was short and chubby with overgrown shaggy hair falling all over his eyes.
"Sit here Jo and rest a bit. I'll bring you some lemonade..."
"Mama I am fine..I'll just go to my roo-"
Her mother turned to her "I said sit here and take a rest"
Jo sat reluctantly and began to browse trough her shells. Her mother came back with a tall glass of lemonade and sat with her.
"Jo..I..."
Jo turned to her mother with a little smile "no Mom...there is not much to say...Let it be...Let me be...I just want to dream this summer"
And her mother burst into tears and hid her head between her hands, slouching until her forehead hit the table and her hair covered her like a veil.
Jo sat rigidly in her seat until she moved quickly and hugged her. "It will be all right. I promise "
She went to her room afterward and recorded everything in her journal, from the meeting with the boy to the smallest seashell she had found. She slept then for she felt very weak and woke up around three in the morning. Her window faced the beach and the moon was high. She opened the window and the cool air came in. It smelled like salt .
In her pink pajamas she rested her head against the cool glass and wept for the first time since she had arrived to the beach house.
They all thought she wanted to die...
In truth she wanted to live for the very first time. She wanted to have her own hair and have her own life and have her very first kiss.
She closed the window and slept again.
She did not go to the beach the next day and instead her whole family went to the town to buy groceries. The small store was open and there was a girl by the cash register who was putting mascara on.
"Mom! customers!" she shouted and from the back a plump woman came out. "Oh goodness Edna, you don't need to scream"
The girl rolled her eyes and continued to put on make up.
They bought the groceries and then talked with the woman.
Josephine sat outside on a bench writing down on her journal the little things she liked.
But she came the next day with her pink pail and another of her hats. She wore leggings and a pale yellow dress. Her hair was loose and with a stick she wrote.
"I am here" And then spent the next hour outlining it with shells.
Once it was done she followed the strip down to where she had gone before.
The little shack was still there. She stopped and called out "Mr. Hobo!"
But then realized she was being silly and moved on. There was no way a hobo was going to come out...or was going to be very nice to her.

The next morning he went back to the beach, the floppy hat in tow and waited for a little while. When the girl failed to show he went into the shack and began restringing his fishing pole, it was desperately in need of some new string and he never wanted to hassle with it on his Saturday fishing trips. He had just about finished when he heard a voice call out "Mr. Hobo" and a smile creeped onto his face. Wiping his hands on his blue jean shorts and pushing his hair out of his eyes he grabbed up the hat from where is had set on the upturned boat. He pushed his way through the old shack door "Well I am certainly no Hobo, but I might have what you’re looking for." He said with a grin on his face, he held up the hat "you dropped it the other day."

"Do you love the sea?" She asked suddenly and tipping her head up she smiled "I always dreamed of the sea. Every night I dreamed of waves crashing at my feet. I dreamed of blue so brilliant that I wanted to weep. I could almost smell the salty spray and hear the cry of the seagulls....but for the longest time I could not visit the sea. Now my dream is longer. It also spans the day...but...When summer ends this dream will end"
She turned to him and with her hands at her back she leaned forward "what do you dream of" and then she smiled regretfully "here I am boring you! There must be a thousand things more interesting than my ramblings"
She picked up her pink pail and placed her hat in it. For a second she stood there with the wind blowing her hair over her face. She pushed it back and she looked so fragile. She blinked and bit her lip. Her eyes moistened "I wish my dream could last forever" and she said nothing for a while "but dreams are never precious unless there is a time limit to them"
"I am Josephine. And I was here today..maybe I'll be here tomorrow Good bye" She smiled radiantly at him and went down the beach swinging her pail and holding her hat less it got lost too.
