a character in “Your Chance at Romance”, as played by shmband

Description

Name: Toby Gillard
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Caucasian

Physical Description: Toby is a middle of the road 6', a fit 68kg with medium length wavy dark blonde hair and blue eyes. He's not super sporty but he has a pretty active social life and so gets plenty of physical activity which keeps him in good shape. His style tends to be mainstream, and he favours long-sleeve tops, bootleg jeans and dark, neutral colours. Sometimes wears a beanie if his hair is likely to become a pain in the a**.

Personality: Toby is a very intense person with a short attention span and a very low boredom threshold. If he's not interested in what people are talking about, he'll say almost nothing, but once you hit on a topic which currently captures his imagination, you can't stop him. Suddenly he'll just come into the discussion out of nowhere with barrelfuls of what he's learned. And he's always learning about something or other. Not to the extent that he's mastered any field or discipline, but in a 'faddish' sort of way, so his knowledge on any subject is always deeper than it is broad. Meaning that he can't truly be called an 'expert' at anything. He'll try to make small-talk when the occassion calls for it, but he's not very good at it and he struggles to mask his boredom. That said, he's quite scrupulous and has an acute sense of justice and fairness. He'll never be deliberately rude to anyone unprovoked, and doesn't rise to anger very easily.

Likes: Media production (especially film), Documentaries, Rock music, cheese of all kinds, being out in the city.

Dislikes: Pointless conversation, people who are shallow, reality TV, dogmatic opinions, the smell of fish

Role: Male Hopeless 5

History: Toby is an only child who's parents are seperated, but on good terms. So growing up his time was split between living with each of his parents, who both lived in the city. He's had an urban upbringing and is very much in tune with cosmopolitan life. At school he performed well...so long as he could stay interested. His tendency to get bored quickly has stopped him from being exceptional, and he despairs about ever finding a subject which keeps his attention long enough for him to want to study it at university.

Sample Post: There it was; a crisp white envelope tucked inside his netbook. It confounded him completely, he couldn't even guess why anyone would want to send him a letter of all things. It was easy enough to contact him any number of other ways. Still, different was interesting, and interesting was good, so he unhesitatingly dug his finger into the fold and tore the envelope open. But just as he was about to pull the letter out, a slender hand appeared in front of him and softly took hold of the letter.

Toby looked up slowly, his lips parting in amazement at the figure which had appeared before him. No amount of incredulity could explain the situation away...he didn't know where she had come from, but something about her very appearance made it intuitively clear who she was. Silently, she unfolded the letter and bid him to read it. He obliged eagerly, fascinationg rising like a breaking-point tension in his chest.

The text of the contract took him by surprise. Had he done something to make this deity think he needed some sort of...help in that regard? He'd never been in hurry to find love, he'd just assumed it would happen at the right time. But this...this was interesting. And interesting was good.

Looking up, he nodded silently, took the pen, and signed his name in the allocated space. Yes, this was going to be interesting indeed.

Other: He likes to twiddle things in his fingers, a sign of his intellectual restlessness.

Toby awoke with the rising awareness of an uncustomary wamrth on the back of his neck. He always slept with his back to the window, but it was a long time since he'd woken up to a sensation of warmth, since when he had gone to bed it had been the latter stages of a Canadian winter!

Rolling over and opening his eyes a touch, his mind was thrown into disarray at the sight that greeted him. An entire wall of his bedroom had been replaced with panelled windows and a sliding door that led down a grass bank directly into a flaxen yellow beach. His first reaction was to chuckle. He firmly believed that what seemed too good to be truly usually was, and the scene he was looking at was the very vision of perfection. No way it was real.

That was until he looked around and saw the rest of his 'room'. Or not, as the case would turn out to be. This wasn't his room at all. Although strangely, it was what his room would look like if he had free reign to make his room look however he wanted. One wall was taken up with end-to-end built-in bookshelves, stacked to bursting with volumes on all the the subjects he'd ever had a fascination with. Around the rest of the room were trickets and items pertaining to all sorts of different topics - from historical curiosities to little scientific gizmos and photographs of famous events.

He hadn't forgotten the contract he'd signed. But even after coming face to face with an undeniable deity, a part of him had still doubted anything would come of it. And now the situation fully had his attention. He wanted to see more.

With a grin he hopped out of bed and located his wardrobe. He had no doubt conditions would be as perfect as they looked right now, so he put on a pare of three-quarter length cargo pants and a deep plunging v-neck short sleeve top and some sandals. Sure, there was a temptation to spend the whole day looking through the bookshelves to see what there was to read, but there would be time for that later. Right now, he was eager to see who else might be on the 'island'.

After leaving his room, he identified four other doors in addition to his own as belonging to other male denizens of the island. After a short moment of panic that he was alone in this place with a bunch of other boys, he saw a plaque indicating the direction to the ladies wing. However, there was no sign of any 'staff' or official to tell them what to do, so he just shrugged and wandered off down the corridor.

It wasn't long before he could hear the sound of other people, and it sounded like there was already a small commotion. Picking up the pace, he came out in the lobby area, where five other people were already present; four of them girls. Not just any girls but...really really attractive girls. That surprised him. Wasn't this island for people who had struggled to find love? How could any of these girls have possible had trouble finding themselves a boyfriend??

"So..." Toby said, clearing his throat, "...did you guys all get...y'know, invited here? I'm sure you know what I'm talking about if you did. If not then...well, what is this all about?"

Ivy Park

Ivy held back the tears and forced a shy smile to appear on her small face at Shawn's light hearted joke. She took the hankerchief and tried her best to wipe her eyes and not smudge her eyeliner. "Thanks," she mumbled returning the article to the handsome blonde who later introduced himself as Shawn. She grinned up at him pushing the sad emotions about her brother. Grateful that he hadn't asked her any questions about her brother she bowed to him slightly as a formal greeting, out of respect mostly. "Hello, Shawn, Xeina," she smiled and turned around to notice another Asian girl behind the taller blonde woman with the accent. And then another blonde boy came up the stairs. She looked at him and smiled just in time for Shawn to make his statement about a "Willy".

Ivy covered her mouth as a giggle came on. She was still laughing when she spoke next. "My name is Ivy, by the way. And I got a letter contract thing from the divine goddess of love?" She shrugged her shoulders and stick her hands out in that body language that meant 'I don't know. i guess so.' She looked back at the blonde woman and the Asian girl watching their reactions. Turning her attention back to Shawn, Xeina, and the new boy, she added, "She made me sign a contract to come here. I hope you know what I'm talking about," She bounced on the balls of her feet slightly. Suddenly, her stomach made an embarrassing grumbling noise. It churned signalling her lack of food. "Hehe," she muttered while crossing her arms over her stomach.

Tommy Jeong

Tommy shot up suddenly as he felt that his bed felt suddenly soft. This didn't feel like his bed at his apartment. This one was soft and felt like a cloud. His other bed was old and bumpy. He didn't have enough money for a new one, but he lived. He rubbed the sleep out of his almond shaped eyes, noticing his glasses were off. When he turned for his glasses, he noticed the room. Oh, hell no this wasn't his room. What is this? I don't even... Then he remembered what happened after his roommate had left. The letter, his name, the goddess, and love. He bit his lip and took his glasses, putting them on before getting out of the surprisingly relaxing bed. He looked down at his clothing, just exactly what he put when he went to sleep last night: no shirt (showing off his nice chest and abdomen), green plaid pajama pants, and black Chinese slippers. He looked over at the mirror that was in the room, seeing his reflection. He rearranged the charm necklace around his neck and bit his lip again. I really need to get over her... He was brought out of his thoughts as he heard faint talking. What? Others? But...what if they're...girls? He gulped before walking out of the room.

Walking down the hallways, following the voices, Tommy eventually found them. The Asian first spotted the two males and smiled. He walked up towards the little group. "Um, anyone...know where we are?" Good god that they weren't girls...wait a second. He took a better look, seeing five girls in the group. His face suddenly turned pink, trying to hide it with his glasses. He also had no shirt on, which he hoped none of the girls would laugh at him. He knew he wasn't good-looking, but he didn't want it to be rubbed in his face. Two girls caught his eye, seeing as they were Asian like himself. He was sort of glad that at least he could act a little normal to them, but the other girls, he didn't know what he was going to do.

Toby's eyes widened a little as the other guy remarked upon the arrival of someone else 'with a willy'. He sure hoped that's not what Shawn was interested in...but that said there was something familiar about the guy's face, and even more so about his name. Toby couldn't quite place it immediately.

"I'm Toby." he answered, then looked at Ivy, "And yeah, that's pretty much my story too. Guess I shoulda taken it a little more seriously because...wow...I mean I wasn't expecting all this. How long do you think we'll be here? I mean this place seems amazing right..."

He was trying to play it easy because it hadn't escaped his mind that there was a very specific reason they were all here according to the contract...and that the potential consequences of no 'succeeding' were fairly dire. If everyone else was thinking the same thing, it could make for an awkward situation, so he was grateful when a fifth girl joined the group and started asking about coffee.

"Good question, I could use something like that myself. And in any case we all gotta eat some time eh?"

Xeina
When Shawn walks to talk to the other male Xeina starts to wipe the paint on to her jeans. She starts to chuckle at Shawn use of the word 'Willy'. I have heard of many uses of the word willy but never that. Hmm,maybe it's a british thing. She thinks to herself and shrugging. She starts to think about that lady she saw yesterday, her not knowing how to keep her mouth she just comes out and saids "Did any of you happen to get this letter from this...this um she said she was a goddess, the goddess of love i think is what she said anyways, Because this doesn't make any sence. Not to sound completely insane or anything but nothing else adds up but that letter." She has a questioning look on her face not knowing if the same thing happened to them or not. Wow, ok now I sound completely INSANE! She saids to herself as she imagines herself doing a face palm to her face.

She chuckle nervously wondering what the other people were thinking about her sudden out busrt but knowing that they probubly were wondering the exact same thing. looks at all the people bitting her lip because she thought she sounded stupid and yet pretty crazy. She puts her hands behind her back and just starts to mess with her fingernails.

Even surrounded by all these beautiful girls, the thought of breakfast still took priority for Toby's attention, and he followed them to the kitchen. He smirked at how Xeina mentioned being able to make 'cereal and milk', but was pleased when her skillset proved a little broader than that and she started making pancakes.

"Well it so happens I usually do the cooking when I stay at my dad's." he said, "Not that I'm a master chef, but my dad's worse!"

He pulled out another frying pan and found some streaky bacon and some unusual sausages. It took him a while to realise that the sausages looked odd because they were vegetarian sausages. That's interesting, he thought, I wonder if the person who stocked this fridge knew someone here was a vegetarian...and I wonder who it is?

He took position next to Xeina at the stove and began to fry up the bacon and sausages.

"So who fancies putting some toast on to go with this? I think we're gonna eat well here...OH! And I nearly forgot."

He left Xeina to watch his pans just for a moment while he raided the cabinets and eventually found what he was looking for...a cafétiere and some grounds. In truth, the whole situation was fascinating enough that he already felt sufficiently woken up, but one of the other girls had declared the need for coffee, so he put a pot on to brew.

"Mmm yeah that's the stuff..." he said out loud with a grin as wonderful breakfast smells started to combine. And in a peculiar moment of realisation, he suddenly placed where he'd seen Shawn's face before. Really...? No it couldn't be...well it wasn't as if that would be the strangest thing that had happened this morning. "Hey what about you Mr Prime Minister? Would you prefer tea?"

She smiles "Well,at least I don't have to be the chef. I'm not an amazing Chef either." She saids as shegets some pancakes out of the skillet and put them on a plate. She looks at Toby "Come on, be nice. Don't jugde people and he's not a prime minister besides they have a monachy in England. Right?" She saids as she looks at Shawn. She looks back at Toby "Besides he's a marine from what I can tell. But that's me making a guess from the classes i actually didn't sleep in. That's rare." She saids as she gets the rest of the pancakes out and puts the skillet in the sink to cool off. "Come and get it!" She saids so everyone can hear her. Her not reall ybeing hungry goes to the table and lays her head down. "So tired and lazy." She saids in a hush tone. She falls asleep and wakes back up knowing that not how you make a good impression. She puts her head up and wants coffee. "Anyone else craving caffine other than me?" She asks in the kitchen seeing if she was the only one.

Toby grinned at all the girls...who'd have thought a simple mug of coffee could be such a divisive subject? He noted Kyra's mention of being able to cook also. That was a plus! It was good to know it wasn't all going to be down to couple of people.

"Maybe we should draw up a plan to share the cooking...oh, boy, ignore that I'm sucking the fun out of being here already, hah!"

He dished up the food and shared it around, putting himself together a hearty bacon sandwhich. Ivy's suggestion of swimming seemed almost as divisive as the issue of coffee, and Toby was surprised that everyone wasn't entirely up for it. For his part, he couldn't decide what he wanted to do first. He was eager to know what else the house had in store...an indeed the island as a whole. But surely the most important thing was to get to know the people he was here with.

Still, he had to make some sort of a decision, and the girls had already all wandered off doing their own thing.

"Well," he mused out loud, "I guess it wouldn't hurt to spread out and cover more ground."

He stretched, letting his good go down, then slipped his hands into his pockets and made his way to the main door, which opened up onto golden sands and a broad, azure spread of the ocean. The gently, warm zephyr that rolled up the coast was like a caress on his face, and he had to laugh at how almost rediculously perfect it was. He was sure no place like this actually existed in the real world...were they even in the world anymore?

He walked a little further down the beach before he saw the red haired girl again, Xeina.

"Hey," he called out, "I think after making everyone breakfast we've earned a time out. You know, I think there may be more on this island than just the house. Wanna come explore see what else there is?"

She sheilds the sun from her eyes to see it was Toby. "Oh,hey. Sure why not? I mean there has to be more than this." She saids as she walks to him. "So which way do you want to go frist?" She asks as she shrugs her shoulders.

She looks at the ocean and exhales. "The ocean's beautiful isn't it? I mean it's one of the only oceans i've ever seen but still is so amazing." She saids as she put her hand through her messy red hair feeling that she has paint on the ends of her hair. 'Last time I wait til the last minute to finish a project in my art class.' She saids as she trys to get it out of her hair.

She rools her eye seeing that is not coming out until she washes it out herself with tons of shampoo and conditoner. "So where are you from? You talk a little..not funny being the word but i guess different." She saids knowing it probubly sounded kind of rude but you can't take back something you say.

As Toby was looking up and down the beach, deciding indeed which way they should go, he caught a glimpse of Xeina playing with her hair as if trying to get something out of it and smirked. Apparently coming to the island hadn't reset everything to perfection, he assumed by the slightly annoyed look on her face at whatever it was.

"Yeah really eh." he said, looking out at the water, "I've never seen the ocean myself, although I live by lake Ontario which is pretty much like an ocean when you're standing next to it."

He grinned across at her, and added, "I guess that answer's your question too, I'm from Canada. How about you? Seems like that goddess type person has picked people from all over. We've got the son of the British Prime Minister, an Australian girl, another girl from somewhere in Europe I couldn't tell..."

He turned around, still looking to see which way to head. The beach was beautiful, for sure, but something about the tropical bush appealed to him. It just looked interesting, and goodness knows what it could be hiding. Some more attractions? Or maybe a natural lagoon or something. He highly doubted the goddess of love would send them to an island with jaguars, anacondas or quicksand.

"How about further inland?" he suggested, "Could be some surprises that way, and I'm guessing the island's pretty safe."

Taking a few steps, he stifled a smirk and pointed at her hair. "Got something stuck in your hair?"

She looks at her hair. "Oh yeah, Well you see i'm getting me masters degree in art at Juliard and well I was working on a painting last night and guess i got paint in my hair." She saids as she gets the dry purple out of her hair. "There we go." She saids with a smile. "Alright let's go inland."

She adds as she starts to walk in land. "I'm from the Bronx,New York orignally but moved to Manhattan to go to Juliard a few months ago. I've been to London,Paris,Tokyo but i've never been anywhere else in the United States. Which is pitiful." She saids as she chuckle knowing that pretty stupid.

"So how old are you because the other guy are like 21 and in their 20's but you look pretty young for someone who needs help to find love. I mean what are you 17 maybe at the most?" She saids as she stops so she can put her hair back in a ponytail hoping there isn't anymore paint in her hair.

"Art eh? Yeah you seem the arty type. I think that's cool, but I guess you got a little reprieve from the work while we're all here right?" he laughed. He hadn't really thought about what being here meant for his own school work, and indeed his weekend job. Nor did he know how long they'd be here, or how their absence would be explained...but there didn't seem much point worrying about that now.

"I'm 18 in a couple months." he replied to Xeina's question, suddenly conscious that he was a little younger than the other guys. "Guess I've always suffered a bit of a baby-face though! How about you? If you just started at uni then I guess you're pretty much 18 yourself?"

They struck out up the grassly incline towards the more overground inland area...'jungle' if that was the right term for such an inviting looking area. The sounds of animals in the canopy above got louder, but the foliage was not so thick that it was hard to go through. Toby realised they didn't know what the others were doing...someone wanted to go swimming, someone else wanted to explore the house. Ah what the heck, he thought, it's an island, it can only be so big!

"Yeah, to be honest I agree with you." Toby chuckled. "But I guess I didn't really choose to have that goddess person come to me...I probably tend to overthink things and figured she must have a reason. Especially when she spoke about never finding love if we fail. I mean I'm in no hurry, but the idea that it could never happen is kinda scary."

As they turned around to make their way back, he stroked his chin and wondered how to explain the 'artsy type' thing without causing offence.

"I guess I just mean you look like you're cut from a different cloth." he smiled, "You know, most people seem pretty much clones of each other these days. I suppose I just appreciate when someone looks like they might have enought of a creative spark in them to be interesting."

"I get what you mean by being alone sound scary but I guess I never put any effort in that "right" one and now it's back to bite me in the butt." She smiles knowing she doesn't sound like she's in college.

"It just seem kind of strange for people so young and ...well I haven't seen one person who wasn't attractive here. So? Wait a minute we all signed a letter, that came out of no where and a lady came out? We're not that smart." Xeina chuckles knowing she did the same thing."And for the artsy comment, yea I get the a lot and I like being different. It makes me stand out" She saids as she softly push Toby's shoulder.

"so what do you do in your free-time since your not in college yet?" She saids as she sees the beach get bigger and bigger. She smiles "And here we are." She saids as she sits on the white hot sand.

The way Xeina described the situation – the blind signing of a contract with so many unknown factors – made Toby grin distinctly. When you put it like that, it did sound pretty ridiculous. But then it wasn’t like anything bad had come of it, they were all together on an exotic island and so far seemed to be having a good time. He did wonder where the others had got to though...hadn’t one of them mentioned swimming? Another was exploring the house...maybe eventually they could head back in and look for an obvious common area where everyone would migrate back to.

“Yeah really eh.” He laughed at the whole situation, looking down at the soft inviting sand and setting himself down next to Xeina, close enough for them to be able to talk over the sound of the rolling waves, though the air moved with only a perfectly gentle breeze. “I never thought about it like that until now. Still, no going back now eh?”

He smiled and ran his fingers into the sand, feeling the dry warmth. “You’re right though, if we’re all here for...well, that reason you’d expect us all to be...hah, different I suppose! Maybe that’s the problem. Not enough people back in the ‘real world’ appreciate the value of ‘different’.” He added a wink at the end in reference to Xeina’s previous remark about being different.

“If I’m honest,” he replied, “most of my free time is spent figuring out what I wanna do at college! My problem is that not many things keep my attention for that long. Finding a subject I could study consistently for three or more years is hard.” He looked out over the water thoughtfully and chewed his lip, “Maybe that’s why I’m here too. Because most people don’t hold my interest for long enough. Never really realised that before either.”

He leaned back on his elbows and blew out a breath of air. The coastal sand was as comfortable as any couch or bed, and he was certain that it would attract the others out sooner or later.

“What kind of stuff inspires you?” he asked, “I guess art allows you to look at lots of different kinds of things. Must give you a lot of...intellectual freedom I suppose. Not being tied to any particular subject matter.”
