RolePlayGateway's Chat: Feedback please! ( )

Postby Remæus on Sun Nov 18, 2007 8:16 pm

We've been using our roleplaying chat for a while, and it is just about time to start getting some feedback from our members.

What do you think of the chat? What problems are you having with it, if any?

Some people have mentioned lag in the full version of the chat (using the link up top), but not the shoutbox (at the bottom of every page). Where do you experience lag, and how does it affect you? Does it take the form of you waiting a long time for other people's messages to appear, or is it just your own posts?

Also known are some occasionaly double posts - I think everyone is experiencing this problem, but fortunately when you see it, you're the only one at that time who does. It doesn't affect everyone in the chat.

Thanks guys!

I have experienced minor lag, when I've said things in the chat. I can't say for sure for messages from others, since I haven't met anyone in there, yet.
Also: There seem to be a lot of different chat rooms available, via drop-down menu, but upon selecting one of them, I promptly get disconnected.

Edit: I forgot to say: Despite those slight problems, I do think the chat is a very good thing, and the shoutbox integration is quite handy. If only I'd ever log into it at the same time as someone else.. -grins-

I've experienced ALOT of lag, and sometimes not even my message will show. I also get disconnected when I venture to other rooms. The chat is a real good thing for the site, just has a few kinks.

Good job, Eric! :]

I experience a ton of lag, and often times it would duplicate my messages after lagging. This includes the chat window and the shoutbox. I do like the convenience of the shoutbox, very much =D

There is a slight delay in the shoutbox, but it doesn't bother me AT ALL. I haven't been in the actual chat window since the shoutbox was added, so I can't attest to that. I <3 the chat!
Today, Friday, October 10, 2009, is my last day on RolePlayGateway.com.
Everyone give me lots of love, because I shall be handing lots out. <3

Seconded, there is the occasional delay but it's not a big thing at all. I'm pretty new here, and didn't really know what the chat was. Well, I surmised what is was technically, but not who went in there or what was talked about. I think I thought it was just for roleplaying battles or something. : O

So the shoutbox has allowed me to get to know some people here just a little bit better. I had an hour's + debate with this guy Cynosure, and with Zhelir. Wouldn't have happened otherwise.

Shoutbox = win.

I have made some changes in both the shoutbox and the chat that should increase speed to some degree. Can anyone notice any changes, particularly those of you who have been experiencing lag or slow chat responsiveness?

I love it. But my connection is so slow. I would love an option to disable embedded chat for when I post and read. But hey, I can live iwith it.

It is a really great job you've done. Thank you

It works well
"She called me late last night, to say she loved me so.
But I guess you changed her mind.
Well I should have known it wouldn't be all right,
But I can't live without her
So I won't even try...
And if I get drunk, then I'll pass out on the floor now baby.
Cause you won't bother me no more.
And if you're drinking, well you know that you're my friend and I say
I guess I'll have myself a beer."

For some reason right now, the shoutbox is not outputting to my screen. I can type in the shoutbox and it would show up in chat, but it won't show the messages at the bottom of the forum anymore ;-;

I think that the chat is wonderful. I love how it's set up and it makes it easier for us to keep track of what all is being said there and still be able to browse the forum. Wonderful idea. ^^

I like the shoutbox better than the chat, simply because it's more convenient... however, as a staff member, it makes it harder to moderate, since we cannot access logs if something goes amiss within the chat, and we cannot kick users who are being malevolent. [At least, not to my knowledge.] And last time I tried to access a channel in the chat, I got disconnected and had to log in again. I don't know if that has been fixed, but at the time, it was quite annoying.

However, my dislike for the chat may stem from my love for irc. I'm willing to give anything a try, but I enjoy the convenience of being able to be in more than one channel at a time, which doesn't work on this chat. [Once again, at least as far as I know.]

Global Moderators are granted the ability to kick using the /kick command.

It does appear that channels are broken at this time. Additionally, you are correct. You are not able to participate in any more than one channel at a time. If you would like this functionality, please feel free to use third-party methods of communication, such as IRC.

Both great!
Id have to say the shoutbox should not considered someone logged in unless they post in it, seeing how sometimes while skimming forum posts people will call to you, of course, and you're not reading.

I don't think it's a big deal if no one replies when they are called to. If someone really needs to talk to someone and they don't answer in the shoutbox, then you can PM them or something. That will get their attention.

The advantages of the shoutbox much outweigh the disadvantages, in my opinion. I can't wait until it is back up. I'm sure it will have improved on many of the complaints people have had against it.

I think it brings the community together a little closer because it's so easy to just type in it to talk with others. The other normal chat doesn't get as much activity as it used to, but the shoutbox had tons of people involved.

I agree with you completely, Melfina.
It brought people together.
They looked, saw, and thought, "Hey, 20 people in the chat!"
And went and talked. How you make friends. :)

And yes, it's worth its disadvantage or two.

I get lag and double-posting often, but I feel my overseas connection might also be to blame.
As you recall, you know I love to show off,
But you never thought that I would take it this far.
What do you know?
