The pillow felt comforting and cool under Louise’s face. She snuggled underneath her blankets and waited for sleep to crawl over her. Imagining fanciful adventures she quickly dropped herself over the cliff of darkness. With her eyes closed she felt herself falling even though she was still on the bed. School was hard and life was boring. This was her escape.

When her lashes broke open see saw her room once more, but she was no longer Louise. Dashing across a tattered rug and past her dresser mirror she jumped through her closed window like a ghost. From the second floor of her house she glided down onto a country road. It was now the middle of the day, and the moon was just visible over the roof of her home.

Image

Wearing an airy white lace night gown that she didn’t own in real life she reached out. The moon grew quickly larger as she rocketed herself upwards. The trip took only moments but the sky now sparkled with stars. Her feet touched down on velvety soft sand and before her lay the vast grey expanse of the moon. After leaping gracefully into a crater she took to brushing away the moon-dust with her fingers. A smooth glass handle felt cold beneath her palm.

Before she went on she crouched down and awaited those that were to come.

The past few nights had been some of Greywhisker's best. In the human, above-ground world, he was very, very lonely, looking so strange and foreign that he was commonly mistake for a man in a costume...That, or people would just scream at the sight of him. His life had been lonely, very lonely...Until very recently, when he discovered that he wasn't the only Rattius in the world. He met Miranda, another like him, and fell in love immediately...And she obliged. And now, he could go to bed, and be comforted by the fact the now he had someone to be with all the time.

Tonight, however, was the first where he had had such a clear, lucid dream. He was floating, in what seemed to be complete blackness. But it was a gentle dark, like...Yes, he was looking at the sky! There were the little shiny stars! He giggled, thinking he was so close to them that he could touch the little balls of light. But as he reached out, he realized that they were moving farther and farther away...No...That wasn't it. HE was moving back, not them! But gently, not falling, just...floating down. He wondered, vaguely, how long it would take...And was answered when his back hit something sandy, sending a small plume of dust up. He raised himself, and looked around, not recognizing the strange, grey surface...Until he saw the Earth in the distance. Greywhisker gave a frightened little squeak, but stopped short at seeing something...A little girl in a white dress, a few yards away. He didn't say anything, and only waited for her to notice the strange rat-creature.

Mmmm blueberries.... ( )

Postby BlazingBunny on Sun Jul 13, 2008 9:37 am

The young girl peeked over the edge of the crater when she heard the soft thud of Greywhisker landing on the moon. She smiled when he gave a sharp squeak. He had no reason to fear the moon; it is just a desolate landscape of grey sand. As the dust cleared she could see his silken tan fur and sharp plum-colored claws. He would make a good seeker and an interesting playmate.

Unfortunately he most certainly had noticed her, so she would have to leave. Before exiting the moon she waved curtly. Abigail then heaved the glass lid open and jumped through. Her long brown hair swooped up above the edge of the crater before disapearing completely. The heavy door banged down onto the bottom of the crater, sending up a large cloud of dust.

When the dust settled it covered the door once more, and locked it tightly. This door would not open again. The moon was a sort of gate-world. At the bottom of every crater lay a door. Some were always unlocked, and some were not. But of course each door did not always lead to the same world. At the bottom of the crater that Abigail had jumped through there were three blueberries. They had leapt off a vine when Abbi ripped the door open.

These three large ripe blueberries were slightly marred by the dust that had fallen, but they still smelled lusciously sweet .

Out of pure reflex, the Rattius waved back, still sitting down in his little crater. He smiled, trying to get her to come over, but was dismayed to see her leave, disappearing through a...glass dome? How could there be...Oh, right, a dream. He could tell that by the surreality of it all...But a part of it shone more sharp and clear than ever before. With nothing else to do, he began to get up, and went over to where the glass dome and girl had been. He tried to open it, but found it shut tight, and so sighed, unsure of what to do next. Then, he smelled the blueberries, delicious blueberries, and spotted the three. His everlasting curiosity (and love of fruit) led him to picking on up, and after brushing some moon-dust off, plopping it into his mouth, chewing, and swallowing, the taste just as good as the smell.

The girls approached the bed from either side, their movements perfectly attuned.
They looked across the bed into each others eyes, smiling a goodnight and good dreams smile to each other.
Climbing between the sheets, they clasped hands underneath the covers.
If anyone knew the two girls still slept together at the age of 17, they may think it was immature, childish.
But they only did it so they would not be alone, no matter where the night took them.
Both pairs of emerald eyes slipped closed, and the blackness rose up to greet them as they slipped silently into the other side.

When they awoke (figuratively) they were no longer in their room.
Both wore almost vampiric attire, black corsets tightly laced with purple thread over white puff-sleeved shirts, like some sort of gothic school uniform that would never exist in reality. Their hair, one's midnight black and one's the colour of white gold, hung around their faces in tightly spiralled curls, their pale skin contrasting with lips the colour of blood.
As they looked up at each other, hands still clasped together, they realised their eyes were no longer green but a deep, imperial purple.

Together they walked, wondering where on earth this place could be, this sandy desert that stretched on endlessly before them.
To their eyes, the sky was darkest black, and yet somehow a soft glow lit up their surroundings.
It was almost as if it was emanating from the ground itself, simply to light their way.

As the thick juice of the blueberry flowed down Greywhisker's throat its odor was squeezed straight up into his sensitive nasal passages. This allowed him to see a thin ribbon of blue smoke in the horizon. It was the visible sign of a blueberry smell in the distance. Although the moon supposedly has no atmosphere the smoke wavered in a breeze over the stars behind it.

At the bottom of a very deep crater a black iron door creaked open. Out slithered Snider, a half-snake, half-spider. It was a creature as black as the night sky with an attitude to match. Two snake legs raced out of the door and up the side of the crater. Nine eyes flashed in the moonlight behind them. His dark hairy body dragged to a stop as a snake arm reached up like a periscope. Only a green snake-head could be visible from a distance.

Snider's forked tongue flashed out, tasting for his master. He tasted the delicate aroma of roses and knew she could not be far. However, there was also a taste of blueberries, fur, and leather in the air. If these new arrivals decided to pursue his precious, he would be forced to pursue them.

Greywhisker watched the pretty blue smoke, and giggled at the sight of it. He felt a bit giddy, but he could not tell whether that was the berries' doing or his own. The rat looked at the other two berries on the ground, and needed to make a choice. Should he eat them, too, since he could not see anyone else around (the twins were far off, and Snider had not yet risen), or leave them here, for some future person's delight? Greywhisker could not make his mind up, and could only stand around the pair of berries and wonder...Were they left specifically for him alone, or were other people supposed to see his discovery? They did not seem to do anything, really, and for some reason, that felt wrong, for a dream. In his dreams, things always made some sort of connection with the next thing. If he took a step in the wrong place, he would fall. If he opened the right door, a reward awaited. But what could he achieved by eating all of the berries?

In the end, his curiosity won over his niggling thoughts, and just as he was about to plop down another, Snider appeared. In the distance, yes, but his sharp eyes could make out enough detail. He shivered, and became frightened again, absolutely HATING snakes. Spiders weren't so bad, so long as they kept their bites to themselves, but snakes were mean, nasty, sly things. In his worry, he ate the berries anyway, one by one, the sweet taste helping calm him a little, to the point that his mind cleared. Why should he judge anything by appearance? Maybe this creature was them same as Greywhisker. Lonely, frightened...Maybe they could be friends!

Greywhisker waved to the spider/snake, trying to usher him over.

The snake head shook back and forth as if to say "Who, me?" Snider had never been welcomed in such a way before. It couldn't be true; the eyes on the snake narrowed in skepticism. Still, he might as well inspect this friendly furry creature.

Slowly one snake leg lifted itself over the crater edge, then another, and another, and then one more. All four legs slid the black fuzzy body forward. As Snider passed Serenity and Calamity he hissed. They were still an unknown entity. For all he knew they could surround him from all sides and attack. Snider left one deep streak and many wiggly lines in the sand behind him

When he got up to Greywhisker he lifted himself onto his snakes legs to make himself look more formidable. One leg reached up and hissed softly into Greywhisker's face. The rat human didn't smell dangerous...

The berries, in the end, did not seem to affect much, or so he could notice. But as he looked around, he began to realize that things looked more...Blue. Yes, first things had been dusty grey, and now they were a light, but solid blue. Everything was a shade of blue now, something he, honestly, found delightful. But he really had no time to experiment, before the snake/spider creature approached, giving him a fuller view...Which filled him with fright, but he tried to keep it down. He wanted to get past appearances, and see if a friend lay underneath all of those dreadful scales and fur. He let out a surprised little squeak as the leg was raised to his face (his scent now smelling strongly, if not sweetly, of the blueberries), but that was all, before raising a hand, and gently stroking the limb from the head down as far as he could casually reach. Yet the hand shook, and so did his voice when he spoke.

"N-n-nice snakey...W-what your name? I'm..." A big pause after this, followed by the aversion of his eyes, out of what looked like shame. "...Greywhisker." He waited for ridicule, something that was perhaps ridiculous in a place such as this, but old habits die hard. The Rattius was constantly picked on for his name, which seemed to sound rather silly to humans and other similar races. He, personally, thought it was a very nice name, but couldn't stand hearing people insult him for it.

Serneity took a step back, her first movement in this dream that was not in sync with her sister, as a rather strange creature slithered past her. It was closer to her than Calamity, and so she'd felt the need to step away.

"Hmm," Calamity said, having always been the slightly more reckless and slightly more stupid of the two, "Let's follow that thing. It looks interesting."

She began toward it, and Serenity followed, her hand clasping tight to her sisters.

"Why, sister dearest? Must we ?"

"Well, we don't [i]have[/i/ to, but we can. And we're going to."

Eric climbed up the ladder to his bunk bed. He shared the the bunk with his brother, who by elimination slept on the bottom. Eric took a drink from the bottle of water. He had been experimenting with ways to become lucid during dreams. What he was trying now was to be thirsty, take a small drink, then go to sleep. It worked by waking him up during a dream, caused by the thirst. He laid his head down on his pillow, and shut his eyes.

Eric woke, thirsty as expected. He turned to lay on his back and he stared at the ceiling, which was a mere two feet from his head. He began to make small twitches with his fingers. This stimulated his brain to stay a wake, but also let his body fall to sleep. After a few minutes, he finally fell back into the void of sleep, only to wake once more. He grabbed his water bottle to take a drink, but thought it all was familiar. He checked his clock, 7:12. He looked away, and checked it again. 1:60. That wasn't a time, atleast not on his clock. Then this must be a dream. HE looked at the floor below his bunk, a six foot drop. The floor was quite messy, and anyone who jumped down was sure to break an ankle. He rolled off his bed, and off the drop. He grunted as he hit the floor, but he felt no pain. He got back up to his feet.

"This is a dream." He said. He opened his window, and climbed out into this new world.

Calamity felt a low rumble in hte pit of her stomach.
"I'm hungry."
Serenty looked at her sister incredulously.
"It's a dream, dearest. Why should you be hungry ? We don't need to eat here."
"I know that, my love. We don't need to follow that creature either. But i'm hungry all the same. I want to eat, and I'm going to."

She raised her face a little, sniffed. Then she continued forward, her sister keeping step with her.
"Wait a second, what is that?" She asked suddenly.
Before her, and beyond the creature they'd followed thus far, she could see a small figure.
As they drew closer the girl's watched it come into focus. It appeared to be some highly evolved form of rat.

"Told you we should follow that thing," Calamity said.

They approached the two creatures.

Rian slammed the door to her bedroom, and peered into her vanity. Her usually sparkling blue eyes, were now red and swollen with tears. She was so sick of it all. Her parents constantly fought, and every once in awhile, like today, they would throw her in the middle of it. She grumbled; she needed to move out.

Rian turned from her vanity, quickly changed into her PJ's, and crawled into bed. Sounds of the continuing fight between her mother and her step father could be heard from the bedroom across the hall. She couldn't stand the man, if you could even call him a man. He didn't have a steady job, and he was so immature, sometimes she wondered if he was still a 16 year old instead of a 45 year old man. And her mother always seemed to take his side when Rian would fight with him. It was heart-breaking. How could a mother choose a man like him over her children?

A lone tear slid down Rian's face, followed by another. She tried to wipe them away, but they kept coming. She rolled over and buried her face in her pillow, silently crying into it. Before too long, Rian had fallen asleep, and just as quickly as the tears had left her eyes, she had slipped into her dream world.

Rian's eyes fluttered open. Stars greeted her. She stood, and realized that she was no longer in her bed, but standing in a crater next to a clear dome-like hatch on the ground. She reached down to lift at the clear handle on the dome, and realized she was wearing different clothes. She wore a strapless light blue dress with an a-line hem that fell to the middle of her calves, white lace fingerless gloves, and a white sash that tied around her waist. The sash was tied in the back into a bow, and then ends hung down past the end of the hem. Her feet, however, were barefoot, though manicured and painted with blue nail-polish that matched her dress. Around her neck was a white ribbon choker.

Rian tried the dome. Locked. She tried again. Nothing. hmm she mused I guess I'll just have a look around then. She climbed out of the crater, and saw a picturesque view of earth. She sharply inhaled. It was magnificent.

Just then, voices reached her ears, and she turned around. Two girls were standing a few hundred yards away conversing with one another, and a furthur distance away from that, a strange spider creature was being petted by another strange looking creature that reminded her of a rat. Rian climbed down from her position. Well, nothing seemed threatning, so perhaps she could make some friends.

"Hello there!"

Serenity and Calamity turned at the same time to face the girl.
"Well, dearest," Calamity commented, "This place is getting more crowded by the second."
"I know, darling-heart. I almost preffered it when it was just the two of us."
Serenity gripped her sister's hand just a little more tightly and they looked at the girl, both with identical, perfectly calm expressions.
"Hello there," Thet said simultaneuosly, "Who are you?"

Snider was at first taken aback by the soft caress, but then he was comforted. His warm snake limb folded underneath Greywhisker's soft touch. After flicking his tongue and giving off a subdued hiss he introduced himself.

The snake head spoke in a higher pitch "Ssssnii..." and the spider body mumered in a lower register "der." After a slight pause he added. "Niccce to meet you Greywhisssker." The two voices sounded oddly robotic when combined in such a way. Snider rarely got the opportunity to speak so his voices were also slightly harsh in texture.

The name Greywhisker did not bother him at all considering that his own name was a simple combination of the two creatures he was composed of. Snider circled round to the back of Grey, away from the incoming strangers. Getting another delicious whiff off of Grey he whispered "Blueberrieeees" over his furry shoulder. Snider had an idea of what world the fruit had come from, and hoped his new friend could find help him find it.

Greywhisker smiled, continuing to pet the hybrid monster more and more frequently, with less and less shaking. It seemed nice enough, and didn't mind being petted. Maybe the rat had been right when he thought of how things were different on the inside...He nodded at the name, a little confused by the mixing of voices but otherwise able to comprehend.

"Nice to meet you too, Snider. Do...Do you want to be friends?" He thought he might as well ask it, seeing as he didn't know how long the dream would last, and was determined to have as much fun as possible. When Snider scuttled behind him, and spoke of blueberries, Greywhisker blinked--odd, with each one the blue shades became more and more absolute--and nodded. "Yes, blueberries. I had some quite recently, from that crater..." He pointed to the crater next to him. "There aren't any left, though," he said shyly, not willing to say that it was his fault.

At that time, many different people appeared on the horizon. Twins, a boy, and a girl, all relatively close together. Greywhisker waved to them, in the same way he did Snider, though was a bit reluctant. What would they think of a giant rat petting a snake/spider monster?

"Friend, yesss..." Thoroughly calmed by the consistent petting he couldn't refuse the offer of friendship. "More blueberriess where?" Snider knew some full phrases, but he mostly just put words together as best he could.

One snake arm stood up to see into the locked crater and saw a girl in a blue dress instead of a blueberry. The girl smelled of salt to him, so he knew she was not his master in disguise. Overwhelmed by the amount of strangers he wrapped a snake arm around Grey's legs and pulled himself close. His fuzzy black body rubbed against the back of Grey's legs.

Snider grew steadily more anxious again as he grew hungrier, and the time he was away from his master became longer. This wonderful petting would only hold him for so long.

"I'm Rian" she said, noting the strange way the girls talked. At that moment she also noticed another boy not too far away. She smiled and waved at him. Taking one final glance at Earth, Rian climbed down from the crater, and walked towards the spider creature.

No sooner did she move, that she heard the creature mention something about blueberries. Blueberries? She loved blueberries.

"Where can we find these blueberries?" She called out to the creature, as she walked closer, seeing the way it pulled the rat creature closer to it. "Don't worry, I won't hurt you" She lowered her voice to a calmer tone, and slowed her pace a bit.

"We're friends, yes?" Rian said, opening her palms wide to show she had nothing in them.

"Hmm," Calamity murmured, the rumbling still sounding low in her stomach, "I'm hungry still...but..."
"But what, dearest?" Serenity asked, turning to her sister.
"Blueberries don't strike me as filling, my love."
"No, not unless you ate an extremely large amount."
They turned to face Snider, and the rat-thing, asking as they did so, "What manner of creatures are you, dear?"

Greywhisker carefully knelt down as Snider curled up around him, and picked the beast up, cradling it in one arm (the furry mass probably hiding most of his own torso) and petting it with the other, not surprised to find this extremely easy. After all, it was a dream.

"Don't worry..." he cooed. "I'll protect you." If he hadn't realized that this was a dream yet, he would have then. In what sort of world would GREYWHISKER be the one protecting another? Still, it was almost a dream come true to finally play such a role, if not for all of the people closing in on them. Getting quite crowded...

He waited until everyone had gotten close enough to hear him, so he didn't have to repeat. "I'm Greywhisker, and I'm a Rattius." He said this stronger than he could have under normal conditions. But now he had someone else to worry about. Snider. "And this is Snider." He pointed over with the petting hand to the locked dome. "That is where I found the blueberries. I'm not sure if they're there anymore." He realized then that everything was completely blue now, with only the slightest in shade changes. NOW he found things confusing, disorienting, and sat down because of it, cradling Snider in his lap and closing his eyes for a few seconds, trying to get rid of the effect.

((You didn't specify how big Snider was, but when you said that the warmth was at the back of his legs, I assumed he was about dog size. Correct me if I'm wrong...Or maybe he could shrink from fright or something. XD))
