ALRIGHT! Time for some brutal, bloody, barbaric Viking Metal discussinating. I wanna know who you think is the best Viking metal band, who's the most underrated Viking Metal band, who's the worst Viking Metal band, and who should have the privilege of joining the band of the ages, the band of Kouketsu and me. Plus anything else from beards and wenches to death and grog.

Fuck yes, viking metal lives on in the hearts of all people who kick ass everywhere. And why people don't know more of this glorious genre to end all genres, I'll never know. Thus far I've been converting heathens by reaching out to them with what meager offerings I have, but I think we need a collective effort to do the same.

As far as current time goes, I'd say I'm pretty obsessed still with Ensiferum above all others. They're FINALLY coming here in April, which if I don't get to see that show, I'm killing everybody. ^_^ They're playing at some half-assed bar though, so it should be decently fun.

Also - EINHERJER, bitches. That is all.

Haha...Well, you can probably guess what my favorite is. Amon Amarth. Mhm, good ol' melodic mood setting Amon Amarth. But...I do like Ensiferum alot, so I'm not outraged about it. Nonetheless, in the spirit of true senseless viking barbarism.....SHUT YER TRAP BEFORE I PLUNDER YOUR HOUSE, YOU NINNY!

Amon Amarth also is pretty high up there as far as overall 'epic' level goes, but they're the typical answer everybody gives to the 'favorite viking metal band' question. Although that's nothing against them talent-wise or anything like that at all.

So on a completely different viking metal-related note, is there a sweeter band name than "Prophets of Ashes"?

Yeah, I know they're pretty much as mainstream as you can get in the way of Viking Metal, and I prefer to be all cool and say somethin' that no-ones ever heard of. Like you do anytime you talk about music with your stupid Streetlight Manifesto. Anyways, there simply must be something more sweeter, at least more Viking/Epic. We just haven't thought of it yet.

Does this mean that we're going to start passing around Audacity projects and laying our tracks together to form the most brutally epic internet band ever?

Just asking, since I shred the lead guitar like no other.

Well, in response to Remaeus, nah, not an internet band. Nor is it gonna be in action anytime soon. Four years, at the minimum. Just plannin' ahead. As for you, Drako, just check out Ensiferum, Finntroll, and Manowar and....what the hell was that Aeleon. Scary..

Well, that's still a good idea. Then we can write and produce songs without ever being in the same room. D:

Well, it kinda made me think about it. But it's also gonna make it really hard. And unfortunately I dun' think right now is a good time to start anything for me.

That was the viking to end all vikings, yo. I'll bet this crazy raver technoviking could whoop your metal viking's ass.

Lol...Ithink you're wrong since my Metal vikings don't just dress up as a viking and dance...They fight like vikings and they worship like vikings. They probably maim and pillage like vikings too. Not too mention the mosh pits. Which are undoubtably chock full of axes. And this is a thread about Viking metal NOT TECHNOVIKING!

Who said anything about dressing up? If anything, technoviking was wearing less than average clothes. He is obviously viking in skin and bones and blood! Raching, electronica-bumpin BLOOD!

I don't know... if you're like me, metal and techno mix like blood and guts. Dionysus or Hammerfall could be followed by Benny Benassi and I wouldn't even bat an eye.

Lol....Yeah, but if you're comparing the two in the way of "Who can beat up who"....Metal is pretty much always gonna win. Maybe not always, but pretty much yeah. Especially Viking Metal. There's some hardcore mofo's in that. And, also, about the band....The lead guitar spot has been filled already, but if you can play some bass that'd be good.

Never heard of Viking Metal.

Is this another item to add to my mental list of "huh, metal, what?" Heavy metal, black metal, love metal, progressive metal, melodic metal....and now Viking metal?....I do not understand the difference between these? Is it just the subject of the lyrics, or what?

It's the sound, Alchemist.

Power metal, for what it's worth. Epicness. (Dragonforce, Hammerfall.)

The only super-heavy (death, black, viking) metal I listen to on a regular basis is In Flames, Children of Bodom, Cradle of Filth from time to time. Opeth is good, but they're unique. Jazz-metal, I say.

Edit: If you think one lead guitar is enough to make an epic band, you have much metal to shred before you are epic.

It's an overall difference in the music. The music is differentiated always by the actual music. Not always the lyrics, though, they're often very much the same. Black metal is often the Satanic worshipping stuff. Deathmetal is generally just violence and shit. Metalcore is pretty much all the Christian and more tactful types of bands. Viking metal is pretty much all about Vikings. For most of these genre's these are just the typical and majority of subject matter among each particular type of metal. Which should tell you that since it's typical it's not certain so it doesn't automatically decide what kind of metal it is. It's all about the musical styling and things of that sort. It's something that would require you to actually listen to Metal to really understand. That or talk to an actual expert. I have no idea of the technicalities of what decides what. I can just tell 'em apart. "Melodic metal" is melodic, Noise metal is generally chaotic as hell and well, noisey, not nearly so melodic.

And, you make a fine point, Remeaus but are you willing to move for the sake of this band? Cause you gotta be dedicated, man. Dedicated. But I would call In Flames Melodic Death metal not really Viking or Black at all. They're actually termed "Gothenburg".

AND POWER METAL, WHILE EPIC, IS STILL NEARLY WORTHLESS. Dragonforce is definitely worthless. While on the subject of Power metal, Alchemist, it's generally characterized by annoying 80's-esque wailing, high-pitched singing.

Dragonforce's sound is very thin. I dunno. Maybe it's because his voice is so high.
