RPing with a poor english? ( )

Postby TowerCorp on Thu Sep 04, 2008 12:02 pm

first of all, hello everyone reading. i registered here like a month ago, but i neved joined any rp because i have a terrible english. i want to create a RP placed in a military camp, i have a character, a story and everything, but i'm afraid to post because of my horrible english grammar. i'm a foreigner so i don't speak english in real life, and i learned it mostly on internet, but i have lots of problems with verb tense, i have to ceck the vocabulary every four words and i always think that my posts looks strange compared to other posts in forums. i also can never express myself properly. i am afraid to post because of this. i was wondering, from what i've written there, do you think my english is acceptable? can i create an rp? (it looks like i'm asking for the permission... :? )

Personally, I think your English is brilliant for someone who has learned it mostly on the Internet! I think you're probably fine to start an RP with your good grasp of the language, and I'm sure people will be understanding, considering you're not fluent. All you need to do is add in your capital letters and you're good to go :)

I think your English is good, better than my French, Spanish, Dutch or German.
I'd RP with you, if you ever want to, you can just drop me a message.
Don't feel nervous about your English, I make more mistakes in one sentence than anyone else I've met, and I'm English.
'Call me a Philistine but I can't see the justification in the 'Petrification As Art' business.'

'Art justifies everything.'

'Uh, no, it doesn't, one-nil to me. Next?'

I have to agree with everyone so far, here! Your English is more than okay, especially for someone who has learnt online! In fact, you are actually better than maybe 70% of the people in my school (including teachers... =D). So yeah, if you feel comfortable setting up a roleplay, just go right ahead! People will be understanding, especially if they are aware of the situation. If theres anything you really struggle with, I'm sure someone on the site would be more than happy to help you out, everyone here is SO nice! (Well, most people anyway)

I am not even to teribly good with my first lanuage, and I know learninga second lanuage is extremely difficult if not done within a certain period of one's life. I would understand any dificulties and to me your mistakes are seem like those a native speaker would make if they were in a hurry.

Wow, I think your English is wonderful for a second language. You'll do perfectly fine role playing. I'm sure people will be understanding. After all, a good role play will be great practice for you.

My English is horrible too, really, I can't even come up with half the amount of sentences in English as I can come up with in Dutch. Even so, I do try and by trying I'm gradually getting better (albeit slowly). There ain't no magical spells or crap to help you out on language, or any other kinda skill really. The trick is to keep practising, get a spell-check, use a thesaurus and read a lot.

And if alla that doesn't work, make sure your creativity, presentation and structure make up for your English ;p

You'll do just fine! Your English looks great, I think you'll be able to fit in just fine.

If you want to improve, I recommend you check out the Starter's Guide to Forum Roleplay, and download something called Firefox - it lets you spellcheck your posts while you're writing them!

Another quick suggestion is to make sure you capitalize the beginning of sentences and proper nouns (names like Paul or Mary), and that'll make you look like you've been speaking English for years.

Thanks for the question, I hope you're able to get some more help and tips. Welcome to RolePlayGateway, too - if you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask. :)

Thank you all, i really feel better now. You're all so nice i feel almost embarrassed.
I'll try downloading Firefox, and i put a post-it on the computer screen to remind me of capital letters. (i use post-its to remind me of everything. my room is filled with them.)
i think i'll try starting my rp now. thank you all again ^^

Also TowerCorp, when you make a role play, just let people know what is going on. People are really friendly when they know things. Also, the grading scale is different for a second language then a first...it is so awesome that you write as well as you do when most people don't even know their first. People wont be hard on you, I'm sure of it and if they are, I'll kick them for you!

The key is communication!

Firefox has a built in spell-checker? O_o I thought it was built into forums by default. :P

Anyways - English as a second language doesn't equate to horrible English, even if you're new to it. As said earlier - it's certainly better than a lot of native English speaker's grammar, you're quite ready for english roleplay threads.
