"I've never made it before....and I'd love some help." Ruby smiled. She blushed. "Really? Are you just saying that? Because Shane thinks the fact that I'm so short is really funny..but it's not. Right?"

Krysta shook her head. "No it's not funny at all. I'm even short compared to him and your not too short compared to me." She smiled. "You really are pretty. I wanted a daughter but I got Shane." She chuckled. "And I was stuck with four brothers. So, unlike me when I was your age I sported a ponytail, braces and paint splattered jeans, you are one pretty girl Ruby." She smiled. "So Shane tells me you like this boy named Ben."

"I got my mother's looks.."Ruby mumbled, looking down at her feet."Pretty? Thanks.." She mumbled again "Shane told you? He may aswell just go tell..everyone!" Ruby-Mae whined, crossing her arms and looking down at the floor, tears gathering in her eyes.

Krysta sighed. "Don't worry about it. Shane tells me everything. He really is a softie, he's just...adjusting." She smiled. "Your mother must have been one truely pretty woman. Courtney was her name, right?"

"Okay..I trust your word." Ruby managed a small smile. "Yeah..she was." Which made tears start trailing down her cheeks. Ruby-Mae sniffed, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. "Dad wanted Ruby and mom wanted Mae..that's why I'm Ruby-Mae."

Krysta was shocked when Ruby started crying. "Oh, honey if I made you upset, we can stop talking if you want." She sighed. "I sorry sweet pea." Krysta smiled sincerely at Ruby. "You have a lovely name."

Krysta smiled. "Thanks. Hey, I have a scrapbook of Shane's baby pictures. He's going to hate me forever but if I show them to you then you can tease him about them if he teases you about your height." Krysta chuckled.

Krysta nodded. "Of course." She smiled. Shane was leaning up against the wall. "Thanks mom, so much for mentioning the scrapbooks." He frowned. "fine, your not a stuck up country midget farmgirl, okay?" He slid by and got a glass of water.

Shane rolled his eyes. "Whatever." Krysta hit him on the back of the head. "What was that for!?" Shane shouted angrily. "You need to be nicer to Ruby-Mae." She crossed her hands. "Lose the attitude Shane or so help me, I will move you to texas with your great Aunt Jen. You know, the one that makes and smells like pickles?" Shane shuddered. "Fine! I'll be freaking nice." He frowned and stomped out of the room. "I'm making an attempt to be nice but you have to take everything so seriously." He glared at Ruby.

"That's because I've grown up without a mother. She freakin' died when I was eight. I've had to learn how to do things and deal with girlrs things without a mum. I've never known how to trust people. Okay? Stop takin' all your bloody anger out on ME. The poor little farm girl." Ruby turned on her heel and fled out of the room, flopping down onto her bed and bursting into tears.

Shane growled and stomped outside, walking towards the town. "Oh pity me, I'm a poor little farm girl." Shane mimicked in a high voice. "That's odd because you look like a guy to me." Shane looked towards the voice. It was Ben. "You were the guy wit Rubs right?"

Ruby-Mae burried her face into her pillow and sobbed. Krysta peeked into the room and crept up to the bed. "Ruby-Mae? Are you okay?" She soothed, kneeling down next to the bed. Ruby shook her head, glancing up. "What's wrong?" She asked. "I know Shane's..not close with his father..but at least his got you...I've never head someone to help me through girl stuff..and to help me go through high school stuff..I mean..sure I got dad..but that's just not enough.."

"Your actually a pretty cool guy Ben." Shane said, taking a sip of a coke. "Well, thank's I guess. You aint too bad for a city boy either." Shane thought about what his mom had said. "Hey, do you want to come over to Ruby's house tonight for dinner? Don't tell her I told you this becaus I'm sure she'd slaughter me but, she likes you man." Ben raised his eyebrows. "I might take that into consideration. Do you think Mark will mind?" Shane shook his head. "Nah, Mark's a pretty cool guy too. Come on over around six, okay?" Shane stood up. Ben followed. "Uh, sure. See y'all then I guess." Shane smiled then headed back to the house.

Ruby had stopped crying and she was now sitting at the kitchen table with Krysta, chatting away. Krysta smiled at Shane as he came in. "What's up, Shane?"

"I invited a friend over for dinner, I hope you guys don't mind." Krysta raised an eyebrow. "Friend? You already made a friend?" Shane looked at Ruby and smirked. "Yeah his name is Ben. He's a cashier at one of the shops in town. He knows Ruby." Krysta smiled. "How fun!"

Shane sat down with them. "Well, I was walking along outside and I ran into Ben. We hung out then I invited him to dinner with us." Krysta looked at Ruby. "Are you not friends with this Ben?" Shane looked around the kitchen and spotted a cake. "Ooh, tiramisu."
