Ruby-Mae Courtney Zane

Ruby-Mae had woken up at least an hour ago, gone for a run, fed the horses and started cooking breakfast before her father chuckled and walked into the room. "Ruby-Mae! Diddn't I say you could sleep in?" Ruby handed her father, Mark Zane, a plate of bacon and eggs, kissing him on the cheek as she did. "Mornin' Dad." Ruby sat on the kitchen bench. "Oh Ruby? Don't forget that Krysta and her son Shane are coming today. Make sure ya don't stink of horse. Why don't you go have a shower? I'll do the dishes." Ruby smiled at her dad. "Thanks." And she hurried off to the shower. After her shower, Ruby came downstairs, wearing a black tanktop, a unbutton checked flannel shirt, denim short shorts and no shoes on. she smiled at her father. "Their here. Why don't you go out and help me take in their bags?" Ruby followed her father, her hands falling back to her side after she tied her hair up into a messy knot with a red ribbon.

Shane rolled his eyes as his mother pulled into the driveway, or what he thought was a driveway, of a farm-like house. "Oh god, it's redneck nation." He mumbled slamming his car door shut. Krysta frowned and gently shut her car door. "Shane, please respect these people, we're living with them now and they were nice enough to let us stay." Shane pulledhis black suitcases from thetrunk and glared at his mom. "Is there a resaon I can't stay with dad?" Krysta immediatly froze. "Now, your father is way too busy to have you around, bothering him." She frowned and unloaded her suitcases and a few boxes from the car. Shane groaned and wrinkled his nose. "What is that smell?" Krysta smirked. "You'll get used to it."

I can honestly say, all the bad things that ever happened to me were directly, directly attributed to drugs and alcohol. I mean, I would never urinate at the Alamo at nine o'clock in the morning dressed in a woman's evening dress sober.

"Hi..Would ya like some help?" Her country accent was clearly obvious and Ruby slightly cringed, pushing the flannel t-shirt sleeves up to her elbows."Nice to meet you Ma'm." She smiled at his mother."Krysta! Such a delight to you see!" Mark called out.

Shane eyed the girl and scoffed. "No." He pushed past her and put the ear buds of his ipod in his ears and blared music into them. Krysta frowned at her son. "Nice to see you too Mark. This must be Ruby-Mae?" She looked at Ruby. "Such a lovely young girl." She smiled. "please forgive Shane, he's not used to places like this. He's lived in the city all his life."

Ruby turned to Krysta. "It's alright Ma'am, I'm used to it." She sighed. "I'll go write up a sign and stick it on his bedroom door, so he knows which room is his." Ruby turned on her heel and headed to the house, pushing past Shane just like he pushed past her. Ripping a piece of paper out of her notebook, she scribbled "Shane's Room." Onto it with her curly handwriting and stuck it to the door with a piece of stickytape. When Shane walked up to his room, she pulled an earphone out of his ear. "Hope ya don't depend on this thing. Cause down here in the country..we be social with eachother." Heading into her own room, which was next to his, she left her door open and flopped onto the small bed she owned. "Yeah that's Ruby-Mae. A beauty isn't she? If Shane teases her about her height, please tell me. It's a..fragile subject." Mark paused. "She's only four feet and seven inches..tall."

Shane growled when Ruby pulled an ear bud out. "Damn hick." He frowned as he ripped the sign off his door. The handwriting made him look prissy. Instead he slapped up a sign he had brought from his old home that said "stay out". Shane stomped into the small room and slammed the door shut behind him. "Oh look there's actually a bed and not a bale of hay." Shane rolled is eyes and tossed his suitcases aside then fell onto his back on the bed, replacing the ear bud and closing his eyes. Krysta nodded. "Knowing Shane, it's sure to come up. He's been having a hard time since the split with me and his dad. Now he's always locked up in his room or out with somefriends until god knows when. Who knows what he had been doing? Me and Paul had half the mind to get him drug tested one time." She shook her head. "I'm sorry if he offends you or Ruby in any way, Mark and again, thank you so much forletting us stay."

"Ruby-Mae Zane! Be nice!" Mark warned her as Ruby -Mae walked up to him. "Why dad? If he's not gonna be grateful for the bed, and if he's gonna be a rude city slob, I'll be a rude country girl." Ruby explained. "Oh and I see don't have the guts to use mom's name, huh? Last time I checked my name was Ruby-Mae Courtney Zane." Ruby headed outside, brushing past her dad and shooting an apologetic glance Krysta's way. Ruby reached the massive tree and climbed up the ladder, picking apples. Well, her father wasn't going to do it since he was busy with Krysta, Ruby wouldn't let Krysta do it because she could hurt herself, and Shane was just being rude.

Krysta sighed. "I should go talk to Shane, maybe I can talk him into being a bit nicer." She smiled then walked to Shane's room. She ignored the sign and burst in, hands on her hips. "Shane Roderick Daughtry, so help me if you disrespect Ruby or Mark again, I will ground you for a week and take away your ipod, laptop and cell phone." Shane rolled his eyes and pulled the ear buds out of his ears. "I didn't hear you." He replied with a smart alek tone. "A month." Krysta said angrily. Shane sighed. "Now why don't you go apologize to Ruby for being rude and maybe try to help her?" Krysta crossed her arms. "Fine." Shane stood up and went to put the ear buds back in but Krysta grabbed them and the ipod. "Not until after you apologize." Shane growled and stomped out of the room to where Ruby was outside. "Hey, farm girl, I'm sorry I was such an ass earlier." He frowned and crossed his arms. "Do you need any help?"

Ruby jumped and held onto the ladder, looking down at him with wide eyes."Oh..it's you." Ruby-Mae climbed down the ladder, clutching the basket with one hand. "You can take this basket and go take it to my father, while learning that you can call me Ruby or Ruby-Mae. Not farm girl." Ruby hurried into the kitchen, to find Krysta there. "I'm sorry about what I said before, Ma'am." Mark walked into kitchen."Ruby.." He started to warn her, shaking his head, not hearing what she ahd just said.

Shane took the basket and frowned. He watched as Ruby left then scowled. "Ha, this stay isn't going to be too pleasant." He muttered walking to the house. "Mr. Zane?" Shane called. He walked into the kitchen to see everyone there. Shane set the basket on the counter then stood, his arms crossed. Krysta smiled at Ruby. "Don't worry about it sweety, you can call me Krysta." She smiled then looked at Shane expectantly. "What? Do I have a bug on me or something?" Shane asked. Krysta frowned. Shane sighed. "I am so sorry about how I acted earlier, oh please forgive me." He bowed his head in fake shame. Krysta stared at him in horror. "Shane Roderick!" She frowned.

"Thanks Krysta." Ruby smiled at her but it was soon wiped off her face. "Oh..Shane already said sorry "before"...but considering what just came out of his mouth..Maybe I'll just ignore him for the next couple of days or I-." Ruby-Mae was cut off by her father. "Ruby-Mae Zane! What did I sa-." Ruby cut her father off. "DAD! It's Ruby-Mae Courtney Zane!" Ruby hurried off to her room and slumped down onto her bed, chidlishly. Ruby-Mae missed her mum, a lot. "Sorry about that..she doesn't like it when people miss her middle name out...it was her mother's."

Shane shrugged and Krysta crossed her arms. "Oh don't be sorry, Shane is ten times worse. That is why I am grounding him until he figures out how to be nice." Shane glared at his mom and whipped around just in time to open the door to outside and slam it shut. Krysta pinched the bridge of her nose. "He needs to get used to this. I just don't understand how he could act like this. Especially to little Ruby."
Shane pulled out his cell phone and called his dad. "Hey kiddo, what's it like out there?" His dad answered almost automatically. "It sucks." Shane frowned. "When can you come pick me up from this place? You said you would if I didn't like it here." A long pause. "Well, about that, I can't work has kept me busy and I just can't find the-" "But you promised!" Shane shouted. "I know but you can make an exception this time right buddy?" Shane sighed. "No, I can't. No wonder Mom left you, you could never keep a promise." He shut the phone and tossed it on the ground. Shane sat down and sulked.

"I can't ground Ruby. She's just..so helpful and innocent but then she goes and does this..and I don't know what to do with her." Mark sighed. Ruby quietly swung open her window and clambered out. Sneaking around to his window, which was next to her's she knocked on it, waiting for him to open it. "C'mon..I'll show you around town..We'll have to walk but it's better then being stuck in the house."

Shane heard Ruby then looked over his shoulder at her. "First I'm not in my room, I'm out here, and second, why didn't you just knock on my door?" He shook his head and looked at his cell phone. "Looks like I'm stuck here a while." He muttered shoving the phone back in his pocket then standing up.

"I diddn't knock on your door because I snuck out of my window. My father's not going to be happy if I just announce that I'm going out. "Well maybe you'll meet a nice blonde girl out in town..one who likes a city boy..like you."

Shane scoffed. "Whatever, as long as I don't step in horse crap or get attacked by a rooster while I'm here, I'll be happy." He shrugged. "What makes you think I like blondes?" He put his hands in his pockets and raised an eyebrow.

Shane scoffed. "Coffee? Well, sounds tempting but I might just take you up on that blonde girl offer." He smirked. "I'm kidding but hey, don't expect much from me. I never did anything back home and I'm sure as hell not doing anything here. I refuse to wake up early just to milk the cows or feed the chickens or whatever else you do so don't count on it." He crossed his arms and walked along side her.

"Well there's not much in town.Just some cafe's, a resturant and small shops." Ruby explained. "Well, I' normally make breakfast for everyone. But if your just gonna sit on your butt all day, your gettin' nothin'." Ruby warned him, as she walked. "In town..I need to make a stop..and buy some food for breakfast tomorrow...But we can do that before we head back."

Shane frowned then shrugged. "Whatever, I don't usually get up in time for breakfast anyways." He smirked. "I'm an excellent cook anyways, I just...burn everything." He sighed. "Just a warning, I wouldn't come into my room at night." He smirked. "Sometimes I sleep nude." He chuckled.
