Semi-Literate Or Literate? ( )

Postby iCat on Mon Aug 24, 2009 11:48 am

Judge this yourself. Here's a sample.

The ocean was quiet. There was no wind, and it was a cloudless night. The beach looked eerie as the light of the full moon bathed its sand in its pale light. The ocean was calm, and the palm trees stood as still as statues. The beach, usually so busy, was quiet at this time of night.

"Avril! Quit dragging me! What's the point of this!" A pair of young girls, no older than 12, were running toward the beach. One girl had a hold on the arm of the other, and was pulling her towards the pale sand. The girl who was leading was a redhead, and her hair was tied back into a ponytail. She was tall and slender, like a model that had been shrunk. Her friend looked unhappy. Her blonde hair was in a mess, like she had been dragged out of bed. She wasn't that tall, but she was as slim as her friend. "Lilly, I told you, I saw dolphins!" Avril said in a French accent. "Avri-"Lilly froze as two dolphins swam up to where they were standing. "What are you waiting for?" Avril said, climbing onto her dolphin. "My powers will protect you." Lilly looked nervously at the water. "Avril, you know us fire types don't like water." Lilly said, but she still climbed onto the dolphin.

Under the water it was quiet. Avril was laughing, if you can laugh underwater. Lilly still looked nervous, but she was smiling. Multi coloured fish of all shades possible swam past them. And then when they jumped out of the water, their hair whipped around their face.
After a fantasic swim with the dolphins, Avril lay down on the beach. Her pale expression was sad. "Where will you stay?" Lilly asked, sitting down beside her friend. "Here." Avril simply said.

A short while afterwards, Lilly came down onto the beach with a shelter, some food, and some blankets. She had thought about bringing books, but then she remembered Avril would probably struggle with them. So she left the stuff down beside Avril who nodded, and then started putting up the shelter.

Lilly remembered the day when Avril had washed up on the beach, cut and bruised. Her tribe had taken the weak girl in, and had promised her she could stay until she was fully healed. It had only taken a week, but everyone had warmed to the girl, and had made her stay another week. Then, at the end of the week, they had said that she would have to leave. That day had been that day earlier.

She took Avril's hands, and looked in the girls eyes. She saw sadness, but also a spark of hope. " I promise, I will persuade my father to take you in full time." Lilly simply said, and hugged Avril.

-------

So what did you think?

No doubt literate.
Semi-literate wouldn't be nearly that long or detailed.

You're quite a good writer.

The writing suggests literacy, but the subject matter hints at youth. It's an unfortunate stereotype, but most people who are, say, twelve, taking the age of the characters, fall under the semi-literate category, if not below it. It probably doesn't help that all of my characters were elemental shapeshifters when I was twelve, though...
Try another subject. Your writing emanates skill-echoes.

Right so, how about this? This is actually a part of what I've written in a story I'm writing. I would of posted the whole thing, except it would take too long for people to read.

The next day, it was pouring rain as Kirsten and I were walking home. I still had some money left over from the previous day, so we ran into a shop while we waited for the rain to stop. The first shop we came to was an old jewellery shop, so we hurried inside. As soon as we went in the door, we knew there was something strange about it. There was an old man in the corner, who stood up as soon as we came in. “Ah! Customers!” He scurried over to a drawer and pulled out a necklace for Kirsten. “On the house!” Kirsten smiled, like she was pleased with herself. Then he presented me with an orange, red, blue, clear, and green bracelet. He didn’t say anything to me, just stared at me. Just then, the rain stopped, so I dragged Kirsten out of the shop.
When I showed Mom and Dad the bracelet, they looked uncomfortable. “Sara, maybe that wasn’t such a good idea...”I frowned. “Why not?” “Well, Sara, we haven’t been completely honest with you. Maybe we should tell you something...”
After the story, I stared open mouthed at them. “You mean, I’ve been the subject of a huge prophecy all my life, and you never told me?! Repeat that prophecy to me.” I demanded.

A girl of thirteen, rich but unknown
Will receive a gift
She will find her destiny, and become
That warrior, slim and swift
To save the world
Sarabande, her powers adrift..

Both subject matters hint at, unfortunately, a Gaia-level mastery.

Be an ordinary person for once. Don't be the secret seventh son of Satan or the foretold warrior to save the world-- just be an ordinary person.
A writer who masters the ability of speaking from their heart in the mouth of a person just like them has true talent.

I agree with Rigel. I think that getting to "Literate" is just the first step in learning how to write... it's so sad that Gaia has emblazoned this new generation of roleplayers with these labels.

To be more accurate, I think that "literate" simply means "can write with proper grammar and spelling". There are many more factors to good roleplaying that transcend this sort of label. You should aspire to be more than literate, you should aspire to write enthralling content that can survive for weeks upon weeks, or even months, without a reply.

The key to this is to use traditional writing techniques, particularly suspension of disbelief and adding three-dimensional depth to your settings and characters alike. Avoid "purple prose" where possible, and instead focus on being concise, as opposed to verbose.

If you are unaware of what purple prose refers to:

PURPLE PROSE: Writing that seems overdone or which makes excessive use of imagery, figures of speech, poetic diction, and polysyllabication. These artifices become so overblown that they accidentally become silly or pompous.

Many writers seem to think that such writing means literate. It does not, as Master stated if you can write a compelling, fluid and concise post, you will do more to entice the readers and those you role-play with than with excessive and often boring ramblings that some mistakenly believe are indicators of quality writing.
The writer who cares more about words than about characters, action, setting, atmosphere is unlikely to create a vivid and continuous dream; he gets in his own way too much; in his poetic drunkenness, he can't tell the cart- and its cargo- from the horse.

Yeah, I agree that literate is more of knowing the basics of writing over being an outstanding roleplayer. I like your writing though, and although there are a few grammar errors, I think you're definitely on the right track to becoming an even better writer. The opening to the first one seemed more like something that would be described in a movie script than in a writing piece though. Maybe you should try to include the setting in the writing piece, rather than having it's own paragraph. It comes across as purple prose, which you probably would like to avoid.

Good luck!
