As Steven walked with Alex, silently fuming, he noticed Emily waving them over, and he just melted. That's what little girls do to their daddies, it's hard to be mad when your daughter is smiling and wanting you to hurry and watch her blow out her candles...Real hard. He gently grabbed Alex's arm and half led-half dragged him over near the cake where they'd soon be singing, wishing the birthday girl a happy birthday. She's getting too old...She'll be a teenager before I know it, and I won't be around enough to make sure she stays away from guys like me who'll only hurt her in the end.... His thoughts just ran away with him, and though he was smiling, his eyes gave it away. His eyes always gave it away.
Steven was never much of a singer, but he'd gladly sing along on his baby girl's birthday, actually, he'd gladly sing for her any day. He just wanted to be around her. He loved her.
He had to laughed at Roger's antics. He liked Roger, really. He didn't know why the man put up with Anya. Actually...To be honest, the other people at the party probably wondered why Anya put up with Roger. Which is exactly what was wrong with them, in Steven's opinion. He watched as she blew out her candles, but couldn't fight a glance over to Jane, it was just a glance in hopes to catch her eye, and he did. And though he only looked in her eyes for a second, it was a glance that said, "I miss you." Even through his smile, no matter what he said. He just couldn't get his eyes to lie.
Then Emily and some girl had a little conversation that made Steven smile. He didn't laugh, didn't shake his head, he just smiled. It was so like her, she was just...Just, defiantly his child. That much was just verified even more as she...Sampled her cake. He shook his head at that one, dammit Steven, why couldn't she have been more like Jane?
Though, as she announced she was opening his present first, he came up with his answer. Because, like it or not, she wanted to be like me. Probably because I'm the "fun" parent. Fuck having fun, I just wanna hug her... She had to ask him about the gift wrap, because everything Steven had ever wrapped for her ended up looking like it'd been run over by a truck by the time he was done with it...So Jane had always done the gift wrapping and Steven used bags when he had to. He glanced at Alex as Emily said that and watched as the man gave a small smile and shrugged slightly. Trying to just brush it off.
Steven couldn't help but grin as his baby girl opened her present, and she loved it, too. He glanced at Alex, who seemed to be excited, before turning and watching Emily again. He grinned at her words, he was so glad she liked her gift. It'd taken long enough to find it for her.
Then something he probably should've seen coming happened: Emily ran towards him for a hug...With that helmet still on. He winced as the thing his his stomach, because, no matter what Emily believed, he didn't have abs of steel. At that moment he sure as hell wished he did, though. But he wouldn't let Emily know that. As far as she was concerned, he didn't feel pain, was never scared, and could do anything. He only wished it could stay that way.
He bent down a little so he could hug her better and said, "I'm so glad you like it, Em. I really am." Then he pulled away, held her at arm's length and bent down on one knee, "But kiddo, we gotta go, now. Some work stuff's come up for Alex, and, well, he's my ride. I hate that I have to leave before your party's over, but I have to." He hated lying to her, but he said he'd leave after Emily opened his present, so he was gonna leave.
Emily frowned, but nodded and said, "Okay, Daddy..." She sounded disappointed, but she kind of expected it to happen.
Steven hugged her again, "I love you, Emily."
"Love you too, Dad."
"Go open the rest of your presents, okay? Have fun for me. I'll come see you again when I can."
"Call me tomorrow?"
"Yeah, I can do that." And with that, she was running back to her presents, and Steven was standing up and letting Alex know they were leaving. He wasn't going to bother saying goodbye to anyone, but he did try and catch Jane's attention so he could wave to her, let her know he was leaving.
As they drove away, Steven just looked out the window and started to pull of the dead, chapped skin on his lower lip. A stupid habit that used to drive Jane crazy. He closed his eyes, not wanting to think about her. Going to the party hadn't been hard, but leaving felt like hell. He felt like he belonged back there. He just wanted to be there, with his daughter and the woman he wouldn't try and convince himself he didn't love. He still loved Jane, still needed her. Alex didn't know that, of course, and he'd never tell him...But he couldn't fool himself as easily as he could fool Alex.
