Emily bounced excitedly as she sat on the living room floor watching tv, her father would be home from work any minute and she couldn't wait to show him the A she'd gotten on her math test. She looked at the clock for the tenth time that minute and yelled, "Mommy! When's Dad gonna be home?!" The eight-year-old was growing inpatient, actually, she'd passed that point long ago. Now she was downright going crazy. She let out a sigh that the neighbors could probably hear before she heard a car driving up, "Oh! He's here! Where's my test?"

She got up and scrambled around to find where she'd put it just before a loud, and very goofy sounding, "I'm home! Who missed me?" Could be heard. The girl forgot everything and rushed to give her father a hug she noticed a small bag in his hand and raised her eyebrow, silently asking him what it was. Steven smiled and whispered, "It's for your mom, go hide it for me." Emily nodded and giggled before taking it from him and rushing off to find a good place to hide the present.

Steven chuckled at her and started to walk towards the kitchen to get a drink when he spotted a paper lying on the couch, "Hm, what's this?" He asked himself as he picked it up. He grinned to himself as he read it, his little girl was so smart. She put in way more of an effort in school than he ever did. He put it back down and went straight to the kitchen to get himself a glass of water and put his work bag down on the table. He made a mental note to fix the sink over the weekend and sighed and the water sprayed on his shirt with a scowl, that was worse than his job. I mean, don't get me wrong, he likes his job: he never thought he'd even have a chance at marine biology, he never would've, either, if not for Jane. Speaking of Jane..."Where the hell is she?"

Those who are faithless know the pleasures of love; it is the faithful who know love's tragedies.

"Mommy! When's Dad gonna be home?!"

Her daughters voice rang in her ears for the tenth time in the past hour or so, being heard throughout the entire house. Jane was just upstairs in her bedroom, the first room near the staircase. Sitting on the edge of her bed, she let a smile tug at the corner of her mouth with hesitation, trying to shelter her sadness as she gripped tighter on to the middle of the phone, pressing it harder against her ear. With a heavy sigh, she looked towards her doorway to make sure Emily was not near. The girl was clever at eavesdropping, just like her father. She looked away from the hallway, her attention being captures by the long white curtains, gently moving along with the earths breath.

"-I mean, do you think I want to be the bearer of bad news Jane?.. Jane?" the voice called out from the other end of the phone.

The repeating of her name eventually got her attention.

"Sorry, I was.. -nevermind. Look I really have to get going. I have to start dinner and get some laundry done." she paused for a moment, her eyes lowering to the floor as she began to pull at a loose piece of thread, hanging from the end of her dress, "I appreciate your concern and everything, I do. But my marriage is perfect. My family is perfect and to be honest, I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. Steven.. he's not the Steve we all used to know. He grew up.. a long time ago."

Damn right he has. Made it through high school which was a surprise to many, and even finished college, graduating with a degree and all. The thought of Steven brought a smile, this time without hesitation. She picked her head up, her hair falling out of her face as she inhaled, and then exhaled. She loved him, and every moment had always felt like the first time.

"Well, I'm just letting you know to keep your eyes open, Jane. Men these days, will do the unthinkable, especially if they know they can't get caught."

-You're only saying this because your husband is a lousy provider and a dead beat father! As much as Jane wanted to say that, she held it in and kept it to herself. Just as a proper woman would. Of course.

"Yeah well-" Jane abruptly stopped talking, from the sound of Steven's voice heard just down the staircase.

"I'm home! Who missed me?"

A light illuminated within Janes eyes, sending her spine to shoot upright, and her head turn towards the opened door of her room.

"-have to go, I'll give you a call later, okay? Okay, have a good evening."

-click. Thank the Heavens.

Jane closed her cellphone, and tossed it behind her on to the bed, standing to her feet. Before she left the room, of course, why not take a glance at herself in the mirror. She gave herself an approved smile, as she pulled back the frizzy strands of loose curls, blending them in with the rest of her hair. She left her room quickly, and with just as much excitement as her daughter. By the time she made it to the staircase, she saw her daughter running through the dinning room, only getting a glimpse of her loose hair bouncing behind her. She rose a curious eyebrow, as her bare feet crept silently down the stairs. She was now standing in the living room, just a few feet away from the kitchen. As she slowly turned the corner to enter the kitchen, she saw the back of Steven, jumping gently as the broken faucet sent a light spray of water in his direction. She held in her laughter, walking up just behind him.

"I missed you." she whispered, her arms reaching out to wrap around his waist, her head turning slightly to rest her cheek just against his back. She pulled herself closer to him, taking in a deep scent of him. Ocean water and cologne. How can it get better than that, really? There was something pouring in side of her. Love, pure love. -and that triumphant feeling, where you simply know the rumors are not true, and that you are right in every decision you have ever made, even the decision of choosing your lifetime partner. Your eternal companion. & you are determined to prove every one wrong. Then again, she had nothing to prove. She was happy, and it showed.

Loud footsteps could be heard, coming their way and slight panting. Emily entered the kitchen, and just before she entered she called out.

"Okay daddy! Mission-"

Accomplished? Emily stopped in her footsteps, observing her mother with her arms wrapped around her father, and changed her choice of words.

"-aborted." she finished with a soft snicker, walking up towards her daddy, and embracing him from the front.

Family sandwich, filled with just enough love in the middle. <3

Steven smiled when he heard Jane's voice and felt her arms wrap around him. He chuckled lightly through his nose, "You know I never get tired of hearing that." His tone wasn't to inform her, no she didn't need to be informed, she knew better than he did that something about knowing he was missed brought a smile to his face. It was something about coming home to an empty house growing up, of having a father but not a dad and feeling like you didn't even have a mom at times. It made being told your missed (even when you ask) something...special.

He heard Emily not too long after, sometimes he wished she wasn't so much like him and he knew he'd really be wishing that when she started noticing boys. They could both hear her footsteps, no doubt, before her voice rang out, it caused Steven to laugh a little. She really was a lot like him. Even the way she said she'd aborted her mission, which she better not have because it was important, reminded him of himself at that age.

Then he was smothered with love, and he loved it. One arm went to wrap around his daughter while the other held on to his wife's. He didn't think anyone could ever get tired of that, of feeling so loved. Though, it didn't take long for Emily to want to do something else, which was fine in Steven's eyes. He just moved Jane's arms so he could turn around and kiss her, which, of course, elicited a nice, "Eww!" From their daughter. Naturally, that only made him want to hiss his wife deeper and with more passion than before. He broke the kiss with a smile and said, "I love you." His eyes lighting up in a way that said he really did.

Then he turned around to Emily, who was surprisingly still standing there, and said, "I saw your test."

The girl's eyes lit up, "Really?"

He nodded, "Yup. Good job, kiddo." He held his hand up next to his head for a high-five. It was funny, no matter how many times he did that, she always tried in vain to reach. This time was no different, Emily jumped up to try and reach her daddy's hand but couldn't quite reach, so he moved his hand down and soon a fairly loud smack! could be heard. Steven flinched slightly but it wasn't noticed by Emily because of her shaking her hand out, obviously regretting her choice at that moment. Steven just smiled, "I have the best family in the world." For some reason, his child stuck her tongue out at him for that before running out of the room. He glanced back at Jane, an amused look on his face before saying, "What was that for?"

Emily's head poked back into the room and she said, a very matter-of-fact tone in her voice, "You're s'pposed to chase me." He nodded and put on his best, "Ooooohhhh." face before bopping himself lightly on the forehead and starting his chase. He delighted scream could he heard once he caught her and the tickling started. Then he had to be careful of the thrashing and kicking that would follow, wouldn't want to be hit in the face by a stray leg or arm because, while it would be amusing, he didn't want another black eye because of it. His coworkers still teased him about that one to the day. When had that happened? 'Bout a year ago? Sounded right.

After a minute or two he gave into her pleas for mercy and let her go to run off and do whatever with a call of, "Don't forget your homework!" Because he knew she hadn't done it yet. It was funny to him sometimes, how worried he was when Jane told him she was pregnant. He was so sure he wasn't going to be a good father, so sure their child would hate him. He still worried about those things from time-to-time. It was hard sometimes to try and convince himself that he was at least a better father than his own so far, that Emily at least knew him. He sat down on the living room floor with a smile, so long as his family was happy, he guessed he was doing an okay job. Sure, their house may not have been huge, he may keep putting off fixing that damned sink, but to him, it was perfect. Still, he wondered to himself if Jane ever wanted more, he knew she always thought she'd live in high society and would never need to save money or anything like that, but she never complained. That didn't mean a thing, though, honestly.

Oh well, he didn't need to think about that just then. What he needed to do was get his bag off the kitchen counter and put away so Jane wouldn't do it herself.

Those who are faithless know the pleasures of love; it is the faithful who know love's tragedies.

Jane was gently embraced, and soon enough she was let go. Though, the hug only lasted for a short while because of her daughters wandering mind, she held on to her own arms, the palms of her hands embracing each opposite arm as she leaned her bottom on to the edge of the counter, watching as Steven went in for the attack. A laugh could be heard from Janes mouth, as she watched and witnessed the playfully tickling and innocent struggle between the two. Her heart, feeling completely warm. Like snuggling up under a blanket, taking small sips from a cup of hot chocolate on a very cold night. She compared it, to that exact feeling. Steven eventually let Emily go, easing her off on her way to finish that homework she neglected to do until she got to see her Dad. It was that way, just about everyday. Emily would come home, pull out all her books, notebook, projects and papers, spread them along the living room floor and separate the things she was eager to show her dad. She would watch a little television, rock back and forth and keep a impatient eye on the ticking clock. Jane found it.. simply adorable. She was in love with the fact that Emily adored her father very much. Knowing Steven never had that same feeling towards her own dad, assured Jane that Steven too, adored the love his daughter had for him. Emily was the apple of his eye. -Both Emily and Steven, were the apple of her own.

Jane watched as Steven walked back in to the kitchen, reaching for his bag and removing it off the counter. She watched him in silence, her laughter leaving a smile still painted on her lips.

"How was work?" she asked, pulling herself away from the counter and walking towards the refrigerator.

She opened the refrigerator door, beginning to pull out a few things she would be able to cook up for a quick, but fulfilling dinner. Broccoli and cabbage she could steam, along with a bit of ground turkey for the idea that came in to mind. Emily's favorite, spaghetti. She closed the refrigerator, laying the things on to the counter and reaching in to the cupboard, grabbing some whole wheat noodles and spaghetti sauce. Yes, even at this age, much still hasn't changed about Jane's character. Though, it is safe to say that over the years, Steven has loosened her up quite a bit. She sees more things in a different light, and her attitude isn't as dominant as it used to be. Still, the small things like being a 'health freak', constant primping of her make up, and the floral pattern dresses have never left. Steven doesn't complain.

Jane smiled to herself, as she began to wash off the vegetables, from time to time looking over her shoulder to Steven.

"You won't be going anywhere tonight, will you? I thought maybe we could watch a movie or -oh! Play an endless game of monopoly. There's something we haven't done in a while."

Truth was, Jane has never been able to tame all of Stevens ways. Sure, he goes out once in a while with his friends, and she accepts that. They both have a social life all their own. But there were some nights, that she would rather not spend alone. She turned her attention back to the broccoli and cabbage, laying them on to the chopping board and grabbing the sharpest knife in reach.

Steven smiled to himself as he took his bag and set it in it's proper place. He grinned at Jane at the mention of work, "Work was great! Penelope was sick," Steven didn't like Penelope, she creeped him out. She was constantly flirting with him, the fact that he was married meant nothing to her, and it really got on his nerves. He'd talked with Jane about the problem before, and nothing was quite as satisfying to him as knowing she wasn't going to be at work. "So I had to do extra work because she wasn't there but it didn't bother me much." He walked and leaned with his back to the counter, trying to stay out of the way as he talked to him lovely wife, "Oh! And we're finding an insane amount of plankton in the water right now! We aren't sure why it's there, but we're studying on it. There's not normally this much this time of the year."

Then after a moment he added, "Oh, and I got this weekend off. Guess it was finally my turn." The group Steven worked with, including him, had five members and one that only worked on weekends so, every weekend one of the others got the two days off. They rotated in a way that was mostly fair, but because one of the biologists had given birth not too long ago nobody was able to have weekends off for a while. Now things were back to normal.

He chuckled, "Well, if we're playing Monopoly, then I'm defiantly going out." He hated Monopoly (mostly because he always lost) and there lay the reason they hadn't played. He normally thought up a good excuse for not playing, but he really didn't feel like it, so instead he said, "I'm just kidding. I wasn't planning on going anywhere. I'll watch whatever movie you want to watch...And I'll even play Monopoly if you really want to." The only reason their games of Monopoly ever lasted longer than five minutes was because Steven always cheats, and Jane knew that, no doubt. But, hey, it just made the game more interesting...Sometimes.

He stayed quite a moment and watched her cook, something he used to be completely incapable of doing. He had honestly matured a lot more than most people expected, and while he did still have the tendency to behave childishly on occasion, the whole reason he even started to grow up was so that he would have a chance with Jane. If it weren't for her, he would honestly probably be in jail or dead. He smiled, "So, how was your day today?" He asked her before adding, "You didn't spend too much time wishing your husband was smarter, more charming and better looking, did you? I mean, I wouldn't blame you if you did but you know." Steven loved to tease himself like that, mostly because he liked to see the way Jane would react. All this time and he still did stupid things just to get a reaction out of her, just like high school...The stupidest thing he ever did was blow up her bike. He still wasn't sure exactly why he'd done that.

The mention of Penelope made Jane roll her eyes, in mild disgust. Though, a smile could be seen tugging at one corner of her mouth, remaining there as he began to talk about his day. But as he spoke, she couldn't seem to shake the instant thought that came to mind. The discussion she had over the telephone with a friend of hers, about Steven's 'supposedly' unfaithful intentions. No, not PENELOPE! For heavens sake, Steven has better taste than that either way. Oh who am I kidding, even thinking about this right now. Look at him. She turned her eyes over to Steven, his mouth moving but her ears were being occupied with her own inner thoughts. He loves me. He does, just look at that gawky, adorable expression.. and that twinkle in his eye.. Well, his eyes are always glossy but..

"So, how was your day today? You didn't spend too much time wishing your husband was smarter, more charming and better looking, did you? I mean, I wouldn't blame you if you did but you know."

Her debating with herself and her train of thoughts came to a hault, once she caught on to his question, seeing as it was directed to her. Her eyes began to shift back to the food in front of her, as she cleared her throat before speaking.

"Oh, shut up Steven. You already know those kind of wishes aren't useful. I would need a miracle!" she said jokingly, as she shook her head, the loose curls having their short moment of spreading apart, and finding their way back in place, "O-oh I uhm, well, ran some errands, had to pick up some things for Emily's project due next week. Went to visit my mom for a little bit." she paused, grabbing the vegetables that were cut up on the cutting board, and walked across the kitchen to the stove, turning on the heat, and throwing the vegetables in to the empty pot. Water, you clutz. "You know, they're thinking about leaving Uncertain. I told her, there is just no place like Texas. -Unless, its California. Now theres a place I wouldn't argue with her about moving to." she cleared her throat, looking back to Steven as she rushed to the sink to grab a large cup of water to throw in to the pot with the vegetables.

Jane has always bugged Steven about leaving Uncertain. Not only because she wanted a change of environment, but she always figured it might be good for their daughter. Sure, California was a fast paced kind of life, and there were the pros and cons to look at. But the weather, the city, the beaches.. Jane longed for it. She rose an eyebrow to Steven, knowing he would catch on to why she mentioned California.

"But other than all that, picked up Emily, cleaned the house and well.. here we are. Hopefully I can get dinner done before 7. I really hate for us to eat after 6. Not my idea of healthy." she said lowly, gently pouring the water in to the pot, and then covering it to let it boil and cook.

Emily's footsteps could be heard a mile a way. She had particularly heavy feet, not in weight, but the way she carried and stomped them about. She turned the corner, making her way in to the kitchen with a paper listen with plenty of math problems to keep her occupied. With a heavy sigh and a roll of her eyes, it was obvious she had a bit of her mothers attitude in her.

"Mom, I need your help! These math problems are way too hard and we didn't go over this crap in class!" -certainly, she had her fathers choice of words.

"-Now Emily, I've told you before. Your teacher wouldn't give you anything she hasn't covered in class." she responded, grabbing a hold of Emily's paper and letting her eyes scan over the problems.

"Hey, whats cookin' good lookin'?" Emily said in a rather.. comical tongue. It was a line she heard her father say once or twice. A childs mind was definitely like a sponge. Emily pranced over to the stove, opening the top of pot and with a push of her tippy toes, she peeked down to the swirling green broccoli and the leafy cabbage.

"Ehhhk, moooooommmm. Dad can't we go get some chinese?" she began to complain, setting the lid back down and walking over to her dad, beginning to poke at his stomach, again, reaching up with the help of her tippy toes, aiming to whisper in his ear.

"When can we surprise her?! Now?! Tomorrow?! Christmas?!" she hissed, her voice not as low as your usual whisper. Though, Jane was too preoccupied with the paper, to hear much of anything.

Looking away from the paper, she observed Emily, reaching up to her dads ear.

"Sharing secrets, are we?" she asked, her hand cupping her waist while her other arm held on to the homework. She raised a curious eyebrow, while her lips curled in to yet another smile. Even with time and age, Jane was a mirror of her adolescence. Though, something was a bit different. She smiled more now, than she ever did before.

Steven chuckled to himself at Jane's joking, she was in a moderately good mood, at least. Something told him she had something else on her mind, though, something bothering her. And as she talked he couldn't help but think she may have been trying to hide something from him...Until she mentioned moving to California. At the mention of that he sighed. Audibly. It wasn't that he wouldn't like to live in California, he really would, but he personally didn't think it would be good for Emily. People were constantly moving in California and it was hard to make long-term friends, or that's what he'd read, anyway. He'd suggested even moving to Florida before but Jane's heart seemed set on the glitz of California. Sure, if he could find a job there they could move, he guessed, but he just had to wonder what kind of trouble Emily would get to in a bigger city, or even if they didn't move to a bigger city. She was too much like him to think she would stay out of trouble, she second she didn't get the attention she wanted she would likely start acting up to get it, and with her mother's attitude mixed in there she was bound to get herself in a hell of a lot of trouble.

He was quite obviously very deep in thought, something people didn't think he was even capable of, until he was pulled out of them by hearing the word "crap" roll off his little girl's tongue. It didn't bother him, but it sounded kind of funny from her. He didn't really know what was going on, but it looked like Emily was having trouble with her homework. It was weird to him because she did so well in her tests, and her teacher always talked about how smart she was, but she was constantly asking for help at home. Steven could only think of one reason for that, a mixture of laziness and wanting extra attention, he knew she knew the stuff.

He ignored her complaining for the time being, she normally stopped soon enough, unless it was something she really detested or didn't want to do. Like when Steven would try and get her to clean her room, that was always a ton of fun. He chuckled lightly when she poked him in the stomach and bent down a little so she could whisper in his ear easier. He glanced over at Jane while she looked at the paper and smiled, wondering if Emily had even looked to see what the surprise was. Something in him doubted it.

Emily jumped when Jane asked about them sharing secrets and shook her head vigorously while Steven chuckled and said, "Nah, she was just trying to convince me to order a pizza," He shrugged, staying nonchalant as he said, "Emily, you mother is a... Wonderful cook." Though his tone of voice sounded less than enthusiastic. He hadn't intended for it to come out that way, though it made it quite clear that he didn't want to eat the vegetables either.

Emily giggled, "Ten bucks says you're sleeping on the couch tonight after that one."

Those who are faithless know the pleasures of love; it is the faithful who know love's tragedies.

Jane lowered her hand from her waist, her eyes not leaving Stevens, even as Emily made her comment. There was a bit of annoyance seen within her expression. Usually, small comments about her cooking never bothered her. She had learned to live with Stevens jokingly ways over time. -But with everything else that has gone on throughout the day, she seemed much more irritable than usual. She eventually tore her eyes away from his. Pale blue, tired, worried and saddened eyes. She extended her arm, holding out the paper in Emily's direction.

"Go and finish your homework." she said, sternly as she rose her head up just a bit, blinking and then looking away, "Now."

Emily's eyes lowered, grabbing on to the paper. A childs natural judgement would be 'I must have said something wrong.' Emily felt she had overstepped some kind of boundary, and the look in her mothers eyes only made her feel even more guilty. Even being eight years old, Emily could recognize emotion well. She took a hold of the paper and lowered her head, her hand that was holding on to her dads shirt slowly lost its grip. She was then surprisingly light on her feet, as she quietly left the kitchen to go and finish up her homework.

Jane didn't bother looking back up to Steven, but played a bit of the 'silent treatment'. She walked back over to the stove, turning off the fire and grabbing the half way boiled pot of vegetables. She took the pot to the sink, removed the lip and dumped the hardly cooked vegetables in to the sink.

"Go ahead and order pizza, Steven." she snapped, letting the pot drop in to the sink with a very loud 'clinking' and 'clunking'.

She left the side of the sink, moved past Steven quickly, and out of the kitchen. She was in a rage, and if asked why, she probably wouldn't have a legit answer. She was angry and upset, because of the mixture of emotions she was bottling in. It wasn't often she would start small arguments for simply nothing. This was the old Jane. She didn't bother to turn her eyes to observe her daughter in the living room, but instead kept her focus ahead. She hurried up the staircase, her feet stomping as she did so, until she neared her bedroom. Walking in, she made way to her vanity just across the room, right across from the front door. She pulled out the chair and sat, her eyes glaring back to her reflection. She watched her eyes. Lifting her finger, she began to pat on to the small crows feet that were honestly, unnoticeable, but to Jane she saw them clearer than ever. He's cheating on me. Look at me! I have more cracks than a sidewalk! Yes, she was over reacting.

She grabbed a hold of her brush, taking it to her hair and beginning to run it through her hair, brushing loose the curls and causing her hair to appear more wavy than curly.

"I'm a horrible wife." she whispered to herself, continuing to brush.

Funny, how a debate about dinner can lead to tears. Especially when there is so much more behind it.

Steven's face fell from the look in Jane's eyes, he hated these moments completely. It was times like this when his mother's words rang through his head, "Steven," She'd said, "You'll never be able to keep her happy. I mean, just look at her! The two of you are just too different! You're gonna end up breaking her heart because you aren't the perfect prince charming she's always wanted, even if she's never said so." He swallowed the bitter lump of guilt that made it's way up his throat at the tone in her voice when she said to order a pizza. The look on his face almost exactly matched the one Emily had as she was leaving the kitchen.

He opened his mouth to speak as Jane passed by him, but thought better of it, figuring he should let her cool down a little before trying to talk to her. So there he stood for a good minute before walking into the living room where he found Emily just sitting in front of her homework. He sat down on the floor next to her and asked, "What kinda of pizza do you want?"

She looked up at him, her green eyes seeming to have lost their spark of joy, "Is Mom mad at me?"

He shook his head and smoothed down the girl's hair, "Nah, I'm pretty sure she's just pissed off at me."

"But why?"

He shrugged, "She probably had a bad day. I'll talk to her later. Now tell me what kinda pizza you want or I'm getting pineapple." Pineapple pizza was Steven's guilty pleasure of sorts. His mother, as well as his daughter, thought it was completely disgusting.

"Eww Dad! Get pepperoni, not that pineapple crap!" Steven chuckled and pulled out his phone to order the pizza, after he finished the call Emily asked, "Can you help me with my math?"

He shrugged, "Well, I was never too good at math, but I did graduate high school...Barely." He made a bit of a face, which made Emily laugh before he said, "Let's see what we can do." After about an hour and most of the pizza, they managed to get all of her homework done.

Emily smiled, "Thanks, Daddy. Hey, what's Mom's surprise, anyway?"

Steven ruffled her hair, "I can't tell you, you're a terrible liar."

She pouted, "Am not!"

He raised his eyebrow, "Yeah? D'you brush your teeth this morning?"

Emily turned to look the other way and mumbled, "Yeah..."

"See what I mean?" He asked, a smirk both on his face and in his voice.

"Shut up."

He laughed and pulled her closed to him for a hug, "I love you, sweetheart. Now I'm gonna go talk to your mom. Hopefully she's not still mad..."

Emily shrugged, "Good luck, Daddy. Hope to see you again."

Steven faked a laugh, "Haha. Very funny." He picked up the pizza box...They had a few pieces left, and he started up the stairs. He got to his and Jane's room and tapped on the door, "Jane, babe, you hungry?" Then in a quieter voice he added, "Can I come in?"

Those who are faithless know the pleasures of love; it is the faithful who know love's tragedies.

The tears dried over time and the sniffling had come to a cease. She had spent more than the amount of time needed in front of the mirror, continuing to brush strands of hair that didn't require much more brushing. She drowned in her own wet sadness but then found some strength inside of her to save herself. Of course, the novel It Had to Be You by Susan Elizabeth Phillips was seeming to bring a little more comfort than expected. What is better than falling in to a story about a blonde bombshell who has it all. And then -meeting the perfect guy but not realizing it towards the end? Then again -it was about football mostly and well, Jane didn't really fancy sports. Either way, it was keeping her occupied and her mind off of other things.

She was laying under the silk sheets, already dressed in her nightgown with her hair pinned up in tight rollers. It was one of those nights we all experience, when your bed seems to feel so much more comfortable than it ever has in your entire lifetime. The pillows behind her were propped up, her back against them as she crossed her legs at the ankle, her lower silhouette framed by the thin silk sheet hugging her gently. Her eyes were fixated on the page she was reading, her fingers gently pulling at the corner, awaiting its moment to turn the page to reveal the next. She heard the soft tapping on the door, but didn't bother to look in its direction. This wasn't an unusual night. Jane would make her way to her room, get ready for be much earlier than usual, and Steven would come after her maybe an hour, or sometimes even two hours later. He was never the type to run after a girl so quickly, and Jane wasn't the type who expected that.

"Jane, babe, you hungry?" Then in a quieter voice he added, "Can I come in?"

She rose an eyebrow, her eyes never leaving the book as she pursed her lips together tightly, then breaking them gently for a quick response.

"Sure." she said, loud enough for Steven to catch just beyond the door.

Once she heard the twisting on the door knob, she spoke out again, "-and I'm not hungry."

She was. She was starving. But Jane was much too prideful to show it. She refused to give in and indulge in a piece of greasy, oil filled pizza. No, she would never give Steven that much satisfaction. She would rather slit her own throat than to let him think everything was simply.. peachy. She turned to the next page, beginning to read over the next paragraph. -But, even though she looked as if she was reading, she really wasn't this time. Her eyes seemed to be moving, tracing the words, but her ears and attention were directed on to Steven. Of course, if he was to start talking, Jane would pull the obvious line, Don't you see I'm reading?. She was a pro at this.

Steven opened the door and sighed, she had to be hungry, but whatever. He put the box of pizza down on the dresser as he walked to sit down on the bed next to Jane, not too close of course, but close enough. He sat there for a moment, biting his lip, thinking. He never went into these things with a plan of any sort, he tended to just wing it, which often made it worse, admittedly. So there he sat, silently watching Jane for a moment before he started to do that thing he does, he would start to make a facial expression and hand gesture like he was about to say something, but then he would change him mind and stop. He had a habit of doing that when trying to think of something to do or trying to explain himself.

After a moment of that he sighed and mumbled, "Oh, never mind." Before flopping face down on the bed and mumbling, "I'm such a fucking idiot." into the mattress. Then he sat back up and said, "Jane," He waited for her to say something about how she was reading before he continued, "What's the matter? Are you really mad at me for the thing about your cooking? I didn't mean for it to come out that way, I really do love your cooking...Just not when you make cabbage. I hate cabbage." He sighed again, "And I don't care that you're reading. I just wanna know what's up here," He pouted a little, "I don't like fighting with you." Okay, so that was a little bit of a lie, Steven did like the occasional fight to remind himself how much they really did love each other. But this one wasn't making much sense to him at the moment, so he wanted to put an end to it if he could.

He frowned and looked at Jane's eyes, not into them, exactly, he was just studying them, trying to gauge exactly how pissed at him she was. He bit his lip and looked down to play with the sheets, he was really just trying to keep himself from talking more and saying something wrong, he didn't need to be trying to make things better and end up making them worse. That would be his luck, though, wouldn't it? When he starts trying to be a helpful and productive person, things stop working out well for him. Sure, he was always in trouble in high school, but people loved him for that. Now he just felt like a douchebag.

Those who are faithless know the pleasures of love; it is the faithful who know love's tragedies.

Jane felt her grip on the book getting tighter, her fingernails beginning to dig in to the paper back novel. She threw her hands while holding the book in to her lap with a heavy sigh, as she loved over to Steve, her face quite plain and emotionless.

"-and you think I enjoy this? You think I like fighting with you?" she asked, of course, not meant to be a question that required much of an answer.

She looked away, feeling the tears in her eyes beginning to swell. It was so much more than he could possibly comprehend! If it was seen from his point of view, the woman was mad! Arguing over whats for dinner! But little did he know, it was so much more than vegetables boiling over. She threw the book across the bed, her heart beginning to race as she clenched the silk sheets, throwing them from off of her body. She threw her legs off of the side of the bed, letting her feet meet with the cold floorboards. Her back was towards him, as she sat there for a moment before speaking, the tears not being able to control themselves.

"I'm so sick of everything, Steven. -and its not just your smart comments about my cooking. It's.. It's everything." she paused, beginning to sniffle as she crossed her arms, the palms of her hands cupping each opposite arm, as if embracing herself, "This house, this stupid forsaken city. Your job. I mean, it keeps you away from us. -and those nights where you say you're working late.."

She stood to her feet, throwing her arms back to her side as she turned to look at him, her cheeks flushed with a bright red complexion, her face completely covered in salty flows of sadness.

"-What do you think I am, Steven? Some kind of slaving puppet of yours! I know you aren't working late. You're probably having yourself a good 'ol time with that.. with that.. with that BIMBO Penelope!" she shouted, her voice raising as she began to pace around the room, stopping near her vanity, "-and the way you act sometimes, Steven. You're so DAMN immature. You know, I thought after high school and even after college you would have grown up just a little bit, but you can't even seem to pull it together in the maturity department! You're stupid little jokes, gosh you think you're so damn charming, don't you!" she reached for her bottle of leave in conditioner, turning around quickly and chucking it towards him as quickly as she could, "-and you never worry about me, Steven! What about what I want? I wanted to work, be a successful teacher and travel the world, but you insisted that I stay home while you fiddle around with sea turtles and seals. I gave up ALL my dreams, Steven. All of them! To be your wife! I want to be able to s-soak my feet in the Pacific ocean. I want to be able to have a life I can look back on, and not regret a single thing."

She turned, facing her vanity mirror, getting a glance of his eyes through the distance between them, through the reflection. Her breathing was heavy from the constant yelling, and as she held on to the edge of the dresser, her shoulders slumped over and the tears continuing to fall, she might just have said the one thing she will regret the most.

"I'm just not happy with you anymore, Steven."

It was a lie, a complete and total lie. Every reason she fell in love with him, ever stupid joke, annoying laugh, immature comment.. those were the things she truly loved the most. But she was bashing them, out of frustration and anger.

Emily's eyes were on the staircase once her dad walked up them, not taking her eyes off. Once she heard the bedroom door open, she gently rose from the floor and began to creep up the stairs, listening in as much as she could. Once near the top, she watched the shadows play, since it was all she could see without peeking her head completely in. She sat near the frame of the doorway, her knees to her shoulder as she listened in on the conversation. It was mostly of her mother yelling, she didn't hear much from her dad. She wanted to cry, and she really didn't understand why.

"-and you think I enjoy this? You think I like fighting with you?"

Steven blinked and shook his head, "I, no, I-" He stopped as she threw her book across the bed, Well here we go... He thought to himself as he waited for her to speak,he wanted nothing more than to just jump up and wrap his arms around her, but he'd learned from past experience that wasn't a good idea when she was angry with him. As she spoke the expression on his face became a mixture of hurt and confusion, "Jane...What do you-" He was cut off by her yelling, how he hated to be yelled at. Even to this day he doubted Jane knew what an impact it made on him. He blinked a few times, "What? Penelope? I-" He couldn't quite get a word in. He'd never thought Jane would even think he would ever touch Penelope. He wouldn't touch that whore with a ten foot pole.

Every word she said just cut into him deeper and deeper until he was actually starting to get mad the fact that she threw some fucking thing (he had honestly never had a clue what that bottle had been) at him just made it worse. Though, he did let it hit him. He knew he at least kind of deserved it, he did stand up after that though. It wasn't soon after that he thought she was through, "Jane," He'd started, trying to keep it together and not yell back at her, but the next thing she had to say both broke his heart and set him off at the same time.

He blinked a few time, "You're not happy with me anymore? Anymore? Tell me, Jane darling, were you ever happy with me? Or, was I perhaps the only guy around that wasn't taken in some way and I showed a fucking interest in you so you thought, 'Hey! He's not who I want but just maybe I can change him to suit my needs and shit!'" He had mimicked the way Jane talked, her usual tone of voice and hand gestures as he spoke those words. Mocking her. "Oh, yeah, I think that's it, isn't it. Oh! Oh, but now, now you see that I just didn't quite turn out the way you wanted me to."

He shook his head and crossed his arms, "My mother was right...I was never good enough for you, and I never will be." He laughed, it sounded bitter, "Damn, I don't know why I even thought for a fucking MOMENT that you even loved me!" He was starting to yell now, "I mean, am I really that easy to string along?!" He felt tears welling up in his eyes, "And I can't even believe you would think for a fucking second that I would cheat on you! Do you have any IDEA how much that HURTS me?!" He let out a sob and, for the first time he could ever remember, he felt tears falling down his cheeks, "And I don't ever remember asking you to give up ONE of your GODDAMN dreams! Excuse me for thinking you wanted to be a mother! That you wanted to take care of OUR child." He stopped and swallowed once before continuing on, "Do you have ANY idea how much I gave up so you'd even just NOTICE me! All the things I did so you would love me? Do you really think I like this shitty old house and fixing the sink every other week? You think I wouldn't LOVE to move outta this stupid place if I could? I'm sorry if you regret marrying me, I really am but you wanna know something? I don't give a damn anymore. you're always so high and lofty like you're so much better than me! I changed SO MUCH about myself and now you just went and ripped my heart out!

"Oh, you're tired of Steven so it's time to break his heart so that maybe he'll go away. So that maybe you can try again with a guy that's worth your time rather than some USELESS pile of SHIT! Right? Am I right?" He closed his eyes and this time his voice came out in barely more than a whisper, "And I do worry about you. I worry every day that you're not happy, that I'm not good enough for you. But I guess I don't have to worry about it now because I know just how true it is." He stole one last glance at Jane and said, "So I guess you can sleep all sound tonight, by yourself. It's what you really want, I'm sure." Then he wiped some of the tears off his face, though it was futile, turned and opened the door he looked down and saw Emily, tears running down the girl's cheeks as she sat there in front of the door. As soon as he saw her, though, she was running off to her room and shutting the door. She knew something was wrong, she'd heard so much yelling and then she saw her daddy, tears staining his face. She'd never seen him cry before, it scared her.

Steven shook his head and stomped down the stairs, he couldn't stay in the house, he needed to get out, clear his head. Maybe not, maybe he needed a drink. Yeah, he needed a drink. So, insuring he had his keys he walked out the front door, making absolutely sure he slammed it. Loudly.

Those who are faithless know the pleasures of love; it is the faithful who know love's tragedies.

Steven's words seemed to be going through one ear and out the other. She was giving it all she had, to ignore the fact there was an elephant in the room. She wanted to ignore the fact she wasn't the only one hurting. There was not only a problem on her hands, but now on both of their hands. A problem she was just not ready to solve. At first, the argument seemed a bit petty, but things were quickly becoming personal. Once Steven began to shout, she pushed herself away from the vanity, turning on to her heels to face him, the only thing between the two was the kin size bed that might only be having one head on its pillows after tonight. His words were painful, digging deep. Even the mention of his mother caused the brunette to cringe, her fists immediately clenching. Their parents both never agreed with their marriage. Not one bit. But Steven and Jane were so much in love, they just wouldn't allow the opinions of even their flesh and blond, get in between what the felt was right. What felt so real. But.. what was this feeling now? It was something she had never felt before. She felt every year, every moment, every anniversary, every kiss, every hug, every stupid game of monopoly.. What was it for? Was she truly unhappy?

She hadn't had a chance to get another word in through his yelling. Jane might have been the one who had the last say in everything, but Stevens tone definitely over powered her own. She remained quiet, her mouth dropping open a bit, quite shocked from the things he had to say.

"So I guess you can sleep all sound tonight, by yourself. It's what you really want, I'm sure."

She watched his back turn, his arm reaching for the door to pull it open wider, leaving out the bedroom in a rage. It took her but a moment to realize he had just ended their argument, and once she came to her senses, she hurried after him.

"Steven don't you dare walk out one me!" she shouted, her feet carrying her to the staircase. Just as she reached the bottom, the door was already slammed, her body jolting from the echoing noise. She ran to the door, slipping her feet in to her slippers before she opened the door, her body moving as quickly as it ever has. Her heart was racing, and as she ran out the door she saw Steven nearing his car. She hurried down the front steps, stopping and refusing to allow herself to play the helpless, apologetic wife who tries to pry the driver door open. Jane was determined, sure, but in no way was she desperate.

The tears began to quickly fall, as she watched his feet not giving a moments rest. Was there no regret in the back of his mind? Why wasn't he turning around. This was.. real.

"-Go ahead and walk away Steven! Like you always do! That's all you're ever good for!" she shouted, slumping her back and lifting her right foot to grab a hold of her slipper and remove it, chucking it towards his back just before he was able to open the car door, "-and your mother is right about a few things. You'll never be good enough for me, and never be good enough to fill the shoes of a father. You're just like your own father! Worthless!" she continued to shout, her voice carrying as far as it could, beginning to choke and shrink because of her continue flow of tears.

She watched him get in to the car, and with nothing left to be said, she turned around to walk back up her porch, slipping on a neglected newspaper wrapped in plastic. She angrily kicked it in to the front lawn before walking in to house, slamming the door behind her. It seemed like the atmosphere had completely changed once she walked in. There was silence, nothing but the gentle clicking of the clock and the low humming sound from the lights. She leaned against the door, beginning to wipe the tears away from her eyes. She sniffled once or twice, doing as best as she could to fight back the tears. She locked the front door, slowly and sluggishly beginning to make her way up the staircase. Emily Jane rose a hand to her chest, just above her heart as she continued up the stairs, searching for her daughter. She probably heard everything.. Ah, I know she did.

The thought of even exposing her daughter to this kind of madness, caused her eyes to swell once more. She reached the top of the stairs, turning off the hall light. She saw that Emily's room showed no light just beneath the bottom of the door, and knew she was probably huddled under her blanket, with nothing more than the night light near her bed, illuminating her room. Jane eased her way to the door, gently turning the knob and swinging it open.

"Em.." she called out, as low as a whisper, hoping for a response but knowing she wasn't going to get one.

She could hear the gentle sobbing, the wet sniffles and even could see the small body moving underneath the blanket from her unpaced breathing. The girl might have been doing more crying than Jane herself. Jane lowered her head, ashamed. She closed the door behind her, walking over to the twin sized bed, patting Emily on her back.

"Emily I'm-" she was cut off, Emily rolling from off of her back and on to her side, further away from her mothers touch. Jane closed her mouth, her knee lifting to gently rest on the mattress. It made a gentle creaking noise, as Jane began to lower her body next to her daughters. She let her head fall on to the pillow, watching and listening to her daughter continue to weep. It broke Jane's heart, literally. Jane reached her arm over, very slowly, and if Emily allowed it, she wanted nothing more to embrace her little girl. Emily didn't budge, and instead, accepted the comfort. Jane leaned in just a bit closer, and closed her eyes.

"Be better than me, Emily.. be better than me." she whispered in to her ear, before her own tears fell, the two sharing a broken heart.

Morning seemed so far away..

Steven didn't stop, he could hear Jane, hell, the whole neighborhood could hear Jane, but he honestly didn't care. Though being hit with a shoe did slow him down for a moment, it made him stop and think; what the hell was he doing? He wasn't really leaving, was he? No, no, of course not, right? No, all the thrown shoes in the world wouldn't make him actually leave Jane. Never. He was just mad at her. True; he normally let her end their arguments and true, he did normally just sit on the porch or the stairs until he'd calmed down, slept on the couch most of the time, and worked things out in the morning. But what was he doing now? No, he'd just turn around and ask Jane to forgive him, like he always did, they'd work through this. They had to.

"You're just like your own father! Worthless!"

Unfortunately Jane just had to say those words that cut into his very soul. So, with that being said, he got into his car, started it up and drove away. He'd be coming back, oh yes, he'd be coming back. He was nothing like his father. Nothing. He couldn't believe she would say something like that to him. So, as he drove away he felt himself die a little inside. What the hell am I doing?

~Oh, babe, I didn't mean to break your heart, I'm just kinda fallin' apart. 'Cause I hurt you, you hurt me. Can't you see that I can't breath?~

As the night progressed, though, that question was completely lost to drunkenness. As he slowly woke, it took him a few moments to fully comprehend what had happened, and by that point the question was, Where the hell am I? As he looked around the room, trying to figure out just where he was, he spotted a pretty little redhead, she was young too. Not exactly fast enough two and two added up and he sighed out a, "Damn it!" Maybe Jane was right, maybe he was just like his dad.

It didn't take long for the woman to be lulled from her own sleep. She giggled slightly, "Good morn-"

Steven shook his head, "Look, I don't mean to be rude or anything but I gotta go. I made the worst mistake of my life right now and I gotta get out of here."

She looked clearly offended, "Excuse me?"

He sighed, "No, it's not you. It's me, it really is. Now if you'll excuse me I have to get home and try and find a way to talk myself outta this." He stood up and started for the door before mumbling, "You need clothes, Steven." And going to get his back on.

It was about then that it hit the redhead, "Oh, god! You're married."

Steven rolled his eyes, "No duh. And I really don't want to be divorced but we'll see how this ends. Have a nice life and whatever." And with that he was gone. Honestly, she was pretty, but in his eyes, she wasn't even half as beautiful as Jane. Which made him wonder why he'd even done that. Easy, he was drunk and mad, a dangerous combination for any human being. But for Steven, oh for Steven it didn't surprise him to find his car parked out front, his idiocy was only ever magnified by ten when he was drunk.

So, he drove home, (because he was honestly never all that smart) well aware that he smelled like alcohol and probably cigarette smoke , but not caring. He just wanted to be home, even if the guilt of what he'd done was killing him, he needed to talk to Jane, look her in the eyes and beg her to forgive him. Things would never be the same unless he did. Well, they'd never be the same anyway, but at least he could try. But you've never done that before, Steven...You left her, even if only for the night, you walked out on her, gave up. That was the only thing in his mind as he sat in the driveway, trying to come up with some courage, even just a little would have been nice just then. But it didn't seem to come, nothing seemed to have been working, which sucked for him because he knew he couldn't just sit in the damned car all day. He needed to take a shower.

So with that in mind he got out of the car and walked towards the door, it was almost ten, so the chance of him bumping into Jane as soon as he opened the door were high. And on top of that, it was Saturday, which meant Emily would be home. Emily... If anything, he was sorry she had to hear their fight, he didn't ever want his baby girl to go through that, ever.

Those who are faithless know the pleasures of love; it is the faithful who know love's tragedies.

To comfort a crying is much more different than comforting an infant. Jane was used to cooing and patting the back of her little Emily when she was a few months old. It was quick to soothe her crying and bring her some solace. But Jane failed to realize that to comfort a child of Emily's age, would need more than cooing and patting. They laid their that night, and the only thing Jane could find herself doing was holding on to her daughter as much as she would allow. While Janes tears were much more silent, Emily had no shame in her loud sniffles, coughs and groans. Eventually though, the two did fall asleep, waking up in the same position they laid to rest in. At 7am, Jane had awoken from her sleep, finding Emily sound asleep in her left arm that found its way to cradle her head. Quietly and with intentions to not wake her, Jane removed her arm from the weight of Emily's crown, and went immediately to her own bedroom. She pushed the door open quickly, with eagerness. But still, Steven was not there. The heaviness in her chest caused her to feel a little lightheaded, and as her feet gradually carried her to her own bed, she fell upon it, face first and her arms sprawled out. She laid there for about an hour, the silk sheets becoming stained with the occasional tears. But Jane, being as prideful as she was, was quick to get on her feet again, take a hot shower, remove her rollers, apply her makeup and pick out a fitted blue dress to be on her way for her daily duties. But pride can only go so far..

Emily's dangling feet were bumping and hitting the leg of the chair next to her intentionally, as she rested her left cheek in to her left palm, her elbow resting on the table and her fork poking at the soggy, syrup covered pancake. She gave a heavy sigh as she poked the pancake with all of her might, lifting it up to ease it towards her mouth, devouring it quickly. Jane was standing above the sink, washing out the skillet she used to make the pancakes, while balancing her phone on her shoulder and speaking in to it. The only thing that filled the kitchen were the clanking of the dishes, the smacking of Emily's mouth and the gentle Mhmms that were heard from Jane.

"-I'm telling you dear, that boy could sell snakes oil to a snakes oil salesman! You are letting him deceive you, hunny bear. I mean, think about Emily here." the woman said, her tone very sharp and filled with sass. Obviously, her mother, "-you don't want her to be tainted with all this nonsense, now do you? For a man to leave his wife and daughter at home, alone, I don't give a damn what neighborhood you're living in, Jane there are all kinds of hooligans running around, you know that. But like I was saying hun, for a man to leave his wife and daughter home alone, all night and hasn't even had the decency to call you, Jane? That is not a man to me, and I have taught you better than this. And it is almost 10 o'clock and he still isn't home? Girl, get some sense in to that stubborn head of yours, where do you think he is? Obviously, some where much better than with his family. You know what I think? I think-"

"Mom!" Jane shouted, her fingers slipping from the dish, its soapy surface leaving from her grip and shattering across the kitchen floor. Emily jumped from the loud shout and then the dropping of the dish, her own fork dropping against her plate. Jane clenched the edge of the counter with her free hand, using the other to hold the phone, "Look, I know you're trying to help but that last thing I need is for judging my husband. I might have made some very naive choices in the past, but the past is long gone, mom. I'm so tired of you trying to live your wrongs through me. I'm not going to live the life you wish you had. I have to go."

Without hesitating, Jane ended the call, setting her cell phone on the counter surface. She turned on the faucet to rinse the soap off her hands, and jumped with a high pitched 'Ooh!' before turning off the faucet.

"This cursed faucet has a mind of its own! Ugh, I can not stand this house!" she grunted through her clenched teeth, her attention turning to Emily who was giggling softly to herself. Jane turned on her heels, her hands positioning themselves on to her waist as she began to.. smile.. She hadn't been able to smile since.. last night. Oh Emily.. her dear Emily. How innocent a child is, to not hold anger in for very long. To not even bother to choose sides, since all she saw were the parents she loved, despite their own problems. It was all Emily knew. And Jane knew inside of her, that the problems her and Steven had were not as nearly big enough to separate this family. Emily might have not been completely torn apart by the arguing she was exposed to last night, but she knew complete separation from her Dad would cause more than a broken heart. Of course, Jane knew that wouldn't happen. Not in a million years. Hell, she loved Steven to the end and all the way back. She just had to figure out a way to apologize, without being the one to do it first.. that was of course, if he were to even come home..

Jane walked towards her, her hands beginning to ruffle the dark brown locks of hair, "Finish your breakfast, and maybe we can go out for a little walk to feed the ducks at the pond. Sound good?" Emily nodded her head, stuffing the rest of her pancake in her mouth, her chewing coming to a hault when her head lifted from her plate.

"Rih hear davdys car!" she muffled with a full mouth, pushing herself out of her chair and grabbing her plate to rush it to the sink. Jane rose an eyebrow, following behind Emily to the sink, her eyes casting out the window. It was him. It was his car. It was Steven. Emily threw her plate in to the sink and began to wipe her mouth, her feet taking her to living room and to the front door. Just as she opened the door, there he was standing. Emily threw her arms out towards him and held on as tight as she could. Instantly, the memories from the night before dispersing. All Emily worried about now, was if he was going to stay or leave again.

Jane heard the front door open, and then there was nothing but silence, not even a word from Emily. Jane turned away from the kitchen window, beginning to dab the bits of sprayed water off of her face with a paper towel as she neared the living room.

Steven was honestly a little shocked when Emily opened the door, he got over it quickly enough and bent down to hug his little girl tight, her arms wrapped around his neck, it felt so right to him. After a moment she let go and looked at him, "Daddy...Are you gonna leave again?"

His face fell at that question, it broke his heart. But, despite that he forced a smile on his face and shook his head, "No way kiddo, not if I have the choice." He glanced up at Jane when he said that, but quickly reverted his attention back to Emily and kissed her head.

She giggle before scrunching her nose up and, as if she'd just noticed said, "Dad...You stink."

Steven nodded, god, she looked just like Jane when she did that, "Yeah...Yeah I know. I kinda need a shower." He looked up at Jane and sighed, "Then we need to talk some things out, preferably without yelling this time." He knew Jane would notice he seemed guilty, if she ever recognized it. Emily didn't notice, she was just happy her dad had come back, and actually planned on staying. Honestly, it wasn't the fact that he'd cheated on Jane that made Steven feel guilty, sex was nothing, it was just sex. And it hadn't been that great, either. No; it was the fact that when he'd married Jane, he promised her that he'd be with her, and only her forever. He broke that promise, that made the guilt rise in his stomach like nothing ever before. It was crazy.

So after a moment he went upstairs to take a shower and get dressed in a pair of jeans and a plain blue tee-shirt. It didn't take him all that long, either. He had been trying to think of how exactly to tell Jane what he'd done, coming out and saying, "Hey babe, so, funny thing, last night I had drunk sex with some pretty redhead. I don't even remember her name but I'm really sorry." yeah, that wasn't gonna go so well. But he had to think of something. He couldn't just not tell her, could he? Sure, that could work, but he already felt like the guilt would eat him alive. There was no way he would just...Get used to it.

With a sigh he went in search of some Tylenol, his head hurt. Then he made his way to the kitchen to get himself something to drink, avoiding the damned sink as he did so. Really, he was trying to take as long as he could to put off talking with Jane, he was scared of how that was gonna go.

Those who are faithless know the pleasures of love; it is the faithful who know love's tragedies.

Jane remained silent, finding it quite easy to hold her tongue compared to last night. Truth be told, there were a million and one things she wanted to say, but refused to give in so easily to striking a conversation. She just let Emily have her own moment, without ruining anything for the girl. Jane watched Steven, and at times Steven watched Jane. It was if they were having a battle with only their eyes fighting. Jane would stare but quickly look away when Steven caught on, and he did the same. She saw the guilt and regret smeared across his face, which drew her in to feel a bit sympathetic for her husband. As much pain he has brought Jane, she knew she was twice the headache. They both drew each other completely insane at times, and to them it was quite normal in their relationship. Because in the end, they both couldn't possibly live without one another. But last night.. Last night.. It seemed to have brought an invisible barricade between the two. She felt so much different, as if there was so much not being said.

Jane turned around and headed back in to the kitchen once the front door was closed and Emily carried on her short conversation. Jane began to occupy herself with cleaning up the broken piece of glass on the floor, sweeping it into the bright green dust pan. Once she was done, she wiped down the counters, straightened the table mats and pushed in all the chairs. Within moments of doing so, she heard the blaring sound of the television from Emily's room. Walking out of the kitchen and up the staircase, she caught a glimpse of Stevens back, as he walked in to their bedroom after leaving the shower. Jane didn't pay much mind, and instead continued on to Emily's room. Peeking her head in, and then slipping her entire body in, she grabbed a hold of the remote laying on the edge of the bed, pointing it to the television and turning it down.

"Mooooommm but I'm deaf in my right ear!" she whined, frowning her face as she folded her arms across her chest, "Right, we wouldn't want to injure the left ear, now would we? 30, Emily Ann."

Emily had the television blared to its maximum, 60. And no, she wasn't really deaf, she just had her own way of sarcasm. Jane smiled, tossing the remote back on to the bed and leaving the room, leaving her door half way open to be able to keep an ear out for her. Even at the age of 8, Jane still kept an ear and eye out for her daughter, even behind the walls of their own home. It was in her nature.

Walking down the staircase, Jane made her way back towards the kitchen, hearing the refrigerator open. She peeked in, and for a moment her movements were slow, but she quickened herself to be sure the opportunity for catching an eye to eye moment would not be open. She pulled out one of the chairs closest to her, grabbed a hold of the pile of mail from the center of the table, and began to fish through a few of the bills. With a sigh, she opened the first couple, setting them to the side. She didn't bother to really look over them, she was just trying to appear.. busy. For a moment it was working, but then the urge to say something was itching at her in the most horrible way.

"You had me worried last night.. you had us both worried."

Steven heard Jane walk in as he was busying himself with the task of taking some Tylenol. He hated taking medicine, even though he often convinced himself he needed it, he couldn't stand to take it. He had a typical male reason for it: it made him feel weak, he didn't like it, he could endure the pain, blah, blah, blah. Today, though, he would suck it up and take the damned pills. He heard Jane's voice coming from the table and he moved to sit down across from her, "I...I know, Jane." He sighed, "I didn't mean to be gone all night, I just..." He turned and looked away, anywhere but her eyes, he couldn't stand looking into those blue eyes, "I was mad. You know how I get when I'm mad. Though, there was no excuse for me to be gone so long and I'm sorry."

He closed his eyes and rested his forehead against his hand, elbow properly propped up on the table. He sighed for the second time and mumbled "I feel like a terrible husband..." Before saying, "I really can't believe I did that, still...Guess it just proves I'm more like my father than I'd care to admit." He was completely serious, his tone of voice, the look on his face, everything. It was highly doubtful that Jane had ever seen him looking that serious before.

He looked back at Jane, no longer avoiding her gaze and asked the question that had been plaguing his mind, "Jane, are you really tired of me? Are you really unhappy?" He shook his head, afraid to stop talking and hear her answer, "We...We can work something out." He closed his eyes, "I just...I don't wanna be away from you ever again."

Those who are faithless know the pleasures of love; it is the faithful who know love's tragedies.

"I really can't believe I did that, still...Guess it just proves I'm more like my father than I'd care to admit."

Steven had moments before tore his gaze away from her own, refusing to look her in the eyes. In his tone and with every word he spoke there was so much emotion and regret. How could Jane ever find it in herself to hold lastnight against him? She loved him too damn much. She set down the mail, and watched the expression on his face closely, and instead of speaking out to sooth his own hurt, she waited for him to finish his thoughts. She watched as his green eyes turned back to her own, confronting the pain she held in.

"Jane, are you really tired of me? Are you really unhappy?" He shook his head, afraid to stop talking and hear her answer, "We...We can work something out." He closed his eyes, "I just...I don't wanna be away from you ever again."

Jane closed her eyes as she lowered her head, beginning to shake it gently and part her lips to speak.

"Steven, no stop it. You know I don't ever mean ninety-nine percent of the things that I say in our arguments." she spoke out, her head raising back up as she pushed in her tears, trying to fill herself with a reminder of relief that this contention between the two of them was slowly finding its own way to being resolved.

Jane placed her hands on the table and pushed her chair back, standing to her feet. The bottom of her shoes clicked loudly against the kitchen tiles, her steps very slow and easy as she circled the table, coming around to his side. With a sigh, she lifted her hand, her fingertips beginning to graze his locks of brown hair between her fingers. She thought she would never touch him again, and that was the honest truth. After last night, and then waking up with him still not here, she thought that it was over. She thought she had lost everything, letting it slip right through her grasp. She continued to run her fingers through him damp hair, until she was able to tilt her head and get a look in to his eyes.

"Then don't." she whispered, her knees feeling as if they were beginning to buckle. She pushed her palm against his shoulder to gently straighten his posture, and once his torso was no longer leaned so much against the table, she lowered herself on to his left knee. She let her hand leave his hair, her right arm locking around his neck, her weight resting on his left shoulder mostly as she leaned in, her cheek pressing against his temple. She was slowly embracing him. Her husband.

"I know I drive you crazy, Steven. I know it." she said, closing her eyes and taking in a deep breath, "-but after Emily's birth this relationship became more than just about us."

She opened her eyes, pulling her her face away from the side of his, looking down in to his eyes once more. She couldn't get enough, she could stare at him for hours. How peculiar, a girl who once hated this boy, had the urge to be so submissive to his needs. Wanting and longing for him every second he was gone. She stared for a moment, and wanted to ask a question, but at the same time not wanting to start another argument. Where did he go lastnight.. -She asked herself, and only herself.
