Site Blackout, Wednesday [Anti-SOPA Protest] ( )

Postby Remæus on Mon Jan 16, 2012 4:35 pm

In protest of the SOPA Bill currently before the U.S. Congress, RolePlayGateway will be completely unavailable on Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 from the hours of 8AM to 8PM EST (Eastern Standard Time, GMT -5). We are participating in the anti-SOPA Blackout alongside companies like Reddit, Wikipedia, Mozilla, and many others to protest the potential damage caused by maligned legislation such as SOPA and PIPA.

What is SOPA?
SOPA stands for the Stop Online Piracy Act, a bill currently before the U.S. Congress. It includes clauses that, if passed, would potentially allow for any corporation to submit a claim against any other corporation, requiring the government to seize control over that company's web presence and taking it offline entirely. Other notable iterations of this kind of legislature include the Protect IP Act (PIPA), which must also be met with the same caliber of resistance.

Why?
If SOPA (or PIPA) passes, not only will RolePlayGateway be directly in the line of fire of wayward and disillusioned copyright enforcers, but the Internet as we know it could potentially be destroyed. Entire websites will be forcefully erased from the Internet because one user on that site decided to upload protected content, be artwork you've drawn of a copyrighted character or the use of a name or setting from your favorite canon. The legislation does not differentiate between sanctioned and unsanctioned copyright violations, and so even if only a small portion of the userbase of a site is generally responsible, it may still be eligible for shutdown.

SOPA affects users of the Internet around the world, and not just RolePlayGateway users in the United States. A single petition to the government by any individual could be used to eliminate all access to that site globally, depending on where that site is physically hosted, or even fracture the Internet we know and love today into a fragmented conglomeration of "internets" based on what country you might be in at a given time. Both myself, the Administrators, and many others here at RolePlayGateway find this violation of free speech, human rights and due process to be wholly unacceptable.

Because of the potentially-catastrophic consequences to communities like ours, RolePlayGateway has made the decision to participate in the blackout, and we encourage our members in the U.S. to get in touch with their congressional representatives and encourage them to vote against SOPA, while international members are encouraged to help spread the word and fight against similar legislation in their own countries.

I can't believe they would pass something like this. they would have to shut down 99% of the web just to get some form of peace of mind. Stupid really but lets just pray that something this ridiculous doesn't get passed.

This is a very good choice, glad to see that you understand the damage SOPA would do Remaeus!

It is going to catch a lot of us off guard; in the mean time how will we chat with others on the chat network ? I have a network I am part of and welcome all to my channel if it helps

I recommend using either Icechat or Pidgin, settings for IRC are made in Pidgin during account setup; once on there the network is irc.ircstorm.net the port is 6667, the channel name is #RPG_Chat, everyone is welcome to attend this channel when the site does the blackout for 12 hours.

Though I must admit, it will indeed catch a lot of people off guard and possibly anger others, the piece above I posted to get to my channel is for all to access the chat when not able to do so here.

I hate the idea of American Congressmen being so danged stupid

the two bills have been shelved indefinitely, looks like the blackout threat worked! With some help from the White House as well.

Yeah, well, we still have to make good on this threat. Remæus is nothing if not completely sincere.

While it will suck not being able to get on here for twelve hours, I'm in full support of the blackout. I've known about SOPA since last July, and have thought that the stupid bill needed to go fall off a cliff and die since then. . . .
NOTE: I might not be the most active of people for a little while, as silly as it is, an injury was just discovered on my turtle and I'm extremely worried about her. . . .

Let's just hope the bills stay shelved indefinitely. While I'm sure there is some good to the bills, there is way too much potential for them to be used improperly. I support this blackout. More people need to know about these bills. Ignorance may be bliss but it's dangerous. Just because you don't see a danger doesn't mean it isn't there.

As for our American congressmen, I'm not so sure it's stupidity. I think they're deliberately trying to see how much they can get away with before the people have had enough. I want my country back!

I support this 100%, we need this site to satisfy our RPing and Writing needs! We cannot allow anyone to take it from us, not after the amount of work everyone's put into it. Simply unacceptable.

I hope everything works out okay and SOPA gets what they deserve!

I will miss this site thoroughly during those 12 hours. However, I support your decision of a blackout completely!

Amazing idea. I just spent most of my day talking and arguing with friends about SOPA/PIPA
For those who know nothing about it, here's a video on it. It's a bit long, but bare with me. While watching it you can grind your teeth, drum your fingers, smash your face into your desk, anything but turn the video off. The man is intelligent, being a law graduate himself, he understands how this works. He gives great examples, and dumbs down the bill itself.
He is totalbiscuit, a sort of Internet celebrity to some.
I'll be honest, when I decided to post this video here I wasn't expecting a thread to have already been dedicated to the problem. It seems this website has raised the bar once again :P

If learning about SOPA/PIPA isn't enough to convince you to watch this, might I add he is British and has a very amusing (yet still understandable) British accent that narrates his video. Plus the intro is awesome.

This "SOPA" bill reminds me of the Prohibition Act of 1920. The idiots removed alcohol from the shelves, but almost all of congress, etc, drank alcohol, and removed it in 1933. If they follow up with this silly act, people can just upload copyrighted material onto government databases and have them shut down permanently. Which will ensue a complete melt down of the government, or parties thereof.

Honestly, they're going to ruin the world if they do this. Not only will innocent sites, like this one, be in trouble, but those sites who supply the nation/world with explicit materials will become F***ED. Excuse my French here, folks, but its true. WoW, Everquest, Starcraft, etc, will be gone. Our games will be reduced to nothing playable, because they've ALL copied it from somewhere at one time or another. If you were around when WoW first popped up, it looked like a cartoonish remake of Everquest. So that'll be gone in a heart beat when people realize this and file a suit against Wizards of the Coast.

Then there's webmd, and such sites, which is helpful, but if you've seen what goes on there, it has content from other sources. That will be gone, and I know several people, doctors, nurses, med students, even stay-at-home parents who actually use the site. They'll be screwed over, because its gone, and so will other sites much like webmd.

Don't think that your little world will be gone if this thing passes. We'll be stuck in the Dark Ages AGAIN, if this thing passes. Military sites will be gone, youtube, yahoo, google, wikipedia, FACEBOOK and MYSPACE WILL BE TAKEN OFF THE INTERNET! If all those other sites were none of your concern, then think about the two sites that are most frequented and are well liked hot spots for people who want to share and friend others on the web. All the while keeping track of their where abouts, etc. The police use Facebook and Myspace to track down people, what will happen if they're taken off the internet?

Excuse my French in this instance again. Sorry folks, but if this thing gets passed, you ain't seeing your friends on facebook, myspace, or where ever. All in all, we're fucked if this thing gets passed, and for what? So people in the government to feel "safer"? Gods. Sometimes I wish I WAS alive back in the Dark Ages, and NOT in this era.
