Sky Raiders ( )

Postby Irish Wolf on Sun Aug 24, 2008 1:33 pm

Stars twinkled down from the dark heavens, like someone hand thrown a lords ransom of diamonds into the night, as a sleek shape drifted through the sky over the Rylas Ocean. The soft chug of a steam engine could be heard, as it slowly turned the twin propellers of the Raven. She had recently set off from the island nation of Lirtista, three days ago, after taking on more fuel, food and a letter of marque to raid the shipping of Lirtista’s rival, The island nation of Indie.

Captain Alexei Skylair stood on the deck of the Raven, out on the boarding platform, leaning against the enclosed main deck, watching the night pass by. The boarding deck was a section of the top deck, surrounding the enclosed part, where two men could walk abreast. It was the place where two ships could extend boarding planks, to trade or do battle.

As the cool air brushed his brown ponytail against his neck, the sleepy captain scanned the horizon with his naked eye. Sitting by his feet was the ship’s cabin boy, an eight-year-old Kem, who resembled a gray mouse. His overly large ears, to a human observer, twitched with the soft sounds of the night.

Alexei shifted, staring out over the bow of the Raven. There was a small, dark shape far ahead of them. He reached out and grabbed the spyglass sitting on deck next to the cabin boy, Jadin. Click it out three time to it’s full length, he raised the spyglass to his right eye. That only allowed him to confirm that the shape was an airship.

“Jadin” said Alexei softly, nudging the sleeping boy with his foot, “Go tell the night watch to put more wood in the engine. We have a ship to chase.”

The boy nodded sleepy, pulling himself to is feet and shuffled off into the enclosed deck, his tail swaying behind him. Alexei turn his attention to the dark shape of the unknown airship. A fat prize maybe but they needed to get much closer to make out her flag. Behind him, the soft chug of the engine increased in volume and frequency. The chase was on.

Peter trudged down a corridor, his weapons slapping softly against his fur, his tail swaying side to side in unison with his footsteps. It was a calm night, and the ship rolled sleepily with the gentle winds that caressed her hull. A soft throbbing sound emanated throughout the ship, a soothing sound that was very good for lulling a tired airman to sleep.

He stepped out on the boarding platform, and narrowly missed colliding with Jadin, the cabin boy. Being a mouse Kem like himself, Peter harbored a particular fondness for the lad.

"Whoa there, lad. Where are you heading off to so hasty like?" he chuckled, and ruffled the boy's hair playfully. The lad smiled up at him as he passed, murmuring, "Cap'n's orders, sir. We's pursuin' a ship." and with those parting words, he darted off.

Peter nodded, and turned to see Captain Alexei peering off into the night through a spyglass. He walked over to stand beside him, "Evenin' Cap'n." he said softly, and he looked off into the distance to see what the captain was examining. After several moments his keen eyes noticed a dark shape floating in midair some distance away. He glanced sideways at Alexei, 'Av you managed to identify 'er yet?"

"Nay" said Alexei, lowering the spyglass, "It be too dark to make out her colors but I'll bet ye a silver piece that she's a Indie ship. These be one of the air corridors they use for trade." He collapsed the spyglass again and looked back along the port side of the Raven, to a nearby rope ladder, leading up into the system of ropes forming a net over the ship's balloon. With practiced ease, he slided his boots off and started towards the ladder. "Make sure those don't fall overboard" he called to Peter, "Or I'll send you in after them."

Tucking the spyglass into his belt, Alexei grabbed the tarred rope and started hauling himself up into the balloon netting. The only time anyone really went up here was to make repairs to the balloon, should they suffer storm damage or an enemy ship break the taboo of never shooting into another airship's balloon. Somethings this happened by mistake but still, even the worst murdering, backstabbing scumbag in the skies never did so on purpose.

As he neared the top, Alexei wrapped his left arm around a strong rope and gripped ladder with his toes. Snapping out his spyglass, he once again took a gander at the airship ahead of them. It was fuzzy and hard to make out but he could see the anchor and five, nine-pointed stars of the Indie flag flapping out behind the bulky merchant vessel.

Peter muttered an, "Aye, Cap'n," and pushed the boots to a relatively safe spot. Then he watched as his captain nimbly climbed the rigging, using both hands and feet, though in Pete's opinion, human foot structure was not very well suited to climbing. Not as good as a rodent's, at least.

He looked out again at the distant shape, and felt a certain amount of excitement, as he always did when the prospect of raiding another ship became a possibility. His paws moved to rest on the weapons hanging at his hips, and he stood a bit straighter.

He wondered if the captain had been able to identify the ship from his new perch, but he didn't ask. Instead he just stood there, quietly. The captain would give orders when he had a mind to, and not a moment sooner. He closed his deeply black eyes and scented the night air. Faint smells of sweat, alcohol and gunpowder were carried on the wind.

Not two seconds after Alexei assured himself of the identity of the ship the Raven was sneaking up on, a goggled shadow popped up on the other side of the balloon. Goggles, a leather cap, ivory skin and tufts of red hair sticking out at odd angles all around.

"What's all this about a ship coming up on my watch? And why ain't ye asleep, have ye nae pulled enough hours under yer belt yet?" Came the somewhat sharp words of the first mate. But even covered by the thick, only partially opaque yellow lenses, her eyes could be seen gleaming with excitement. Had she not been buried somewhere in the ship's interior, making sure that the lazier grease monkeys were worked hard enough, Rahlia likely would have been the one to spy the ship first.

"We've found ourselves a pump merchant Rahlia" said Alexie, grinning and lowering the spyglass from his eye, "And I couldn't sleep anyways." He glanced back at his first mate, the oddest looking member of the crew at times. "I'll talk more on deck" he finished and looked down at the gunner awaiting orders.

"Mr. Slyfurson" Alexei called down to the deck, "We do indeed have a Indie merchantmen or someone who's going to be very sorry for flying their colors." He glanced at the horizon, looking for a sign to how far off the dawn was, as he did not have an hourglass handy at that moment. He guessed they had about an hour before the merchant would change watches and they were spotted.

Alexei collapsed the spyglass again and tucked it into his belt, followed by the decent back to the deck. Jumping down the last few feet, the Raven's captain grinned widely. "Go find Jadin" he said, grabbing his boots and pulling them on, "And tell him to look and see if he have any Indie colors stashed away, then start getting the crew ready for action."

Peter's pulse quickened. And Indie merchant. Aye, that'd be a prize worth havin', and no mistake. He tightened his belts and adjusted his weapons so that they were more easily drawn. He allowed himself an excited grin, revealing many straight white teeth, and the long front incisors that all rodents possessed.

He nodded in acknowledgment, "Aye Cap'n. I'll get right on it." And then he performed an about face and left. Let's see...Jadin would probably be in the vicinity of the engine room, or possibly the galley.

Then he'd be off to prepare the guns ... and rouse the crew. There was plunder to be had!

Jeffrey was on one of the outside corridors enjoying the cool, fresh air availavle only from airships while practicing from this meditation book. He pitured butterflies and flowers...Inhale, Exhale, Inhale, Exhale,Inhale, Exhale,Inhale, Exhale,Inhale, Exhale,Inhale, Exhale,Inhale, Exhale. Then, voices from his concentration. Listening carefully Jeffrey could make out Alexie's voice (as he had heard that same voice his whole life) and some other people's. Deciding to check out what was causing all that commotion, Jeffrey headed towards the main deck.

As he climbed aboard the observational platform, he saw a friendly figure. "Alexie what are you doing up so late? Shouldn't you get your beauty sleep Captain?" Then, Jeffrey noticed the faint outline of another ship in the distance. "So, my Captain...I see you will have a pretty busy night. Would you like me to go and prepare the weapons?"

Rahlia rolled her eyes at Alexei's usual claim to insomnia. Even when they had been children, he would be up and wandering around when he was supposed to be strapped down in bed. Or he would be keeping her up at night asking questions and telling stories by candle light. Not all bad memories, of course, but she was still concerned over his lack of rest. A captain with dark circles under his eyes gave the wrong message. But she didn't press the issue right then, feeling far more excited about a heist than she was worried about Alexei failing to sleep.

After scrambling back down off of the balloon, Rahlia slipped her goggles back off her eyes to rest on her head and went directly for a collection of ropes strung up next one of the doors that led to the belowdecks. Counting thirteen to the left, she seized upon one of the thick ropes and gave it several sharp pulls. Though there seemed to be no response, below decks bells were ringing in the sleeping quarters to wake up the crew. This served better than hollering out of shaking a giant bell above decks, for this would alert their prey as well as the men. With the bells sufficiently rung, Rahlia hiked back over to where Alexei was pulling on his boots.

"Crew should be up an' at 'em in a few moments, Cap'n. What're yer orders?"

"Aye Jeffrey" said Alexei, not turning from his spot in the bow, still staring at their prize, "Go open the armory and grab the gun crews, I want the cannon loaded and ready to be used at my command."

The Raven was armed with six guns in total, not that all of them were matching design or made in the same foundry. there was a chase gun in both the bow and stern, each one being a two pounder. The other four guns were located below the top deck, two on the port side and two on the starboard. Those main guns were three pounders. Not the most heavily armed ship compared with a few from the different navies but then again, if the guns were two heavy two things would happen. the first was the ship would not fly and the second being that you would knock any ship you hit outta the sky and lose any profit to be made.

"More speed" said Alexei, "We need to close with them in the dark. Dawn comes soon and with it, the light. They won't fall for any trick we try to pull in the clear morning light. Most Indie merchant captains will only crew their ships with other bronze skinned Indiens and only a few will take on other airmen. The darker it is, the better chance we have of getting close and making a sneak attack."

Silas Lambley sighed as the words were passed down to him from the quarterdeck to the gun deck below.

"More speed? That's all he ever wants. No respect for Rebecca. None."

He patted the blackened iron of the reciprocating steam engine, unmindful of the hot metal against his palm. The name "Rebecca" had been written crudely in white chalk along the side of the boiler. He'd met a girl named Rebecca once, with flaming red hair and a fiery temper. Silas wasn't a handsome man and never had been, but the pretty wee lass had seen something in him and he had lost himself to her. The steam engine of the Raven reminded him of her: all fire and spirit and strength and raw beauty.

He shook his head to clear it of his thoughts. It wouldn't do to get caught up in memories of happier days. He looked over at the two cheerfully slow-minded young men who were his stokers. "You heard the Captain, lads! I want you throwing wood into those furnaces like you was feeding a Skraela fire on Midsummer's Day!"

The two men, twins actually, had no idea what the large engineer was talking about, but they understood his urgency and began madly heaving split logs into the red-hot maw of the boiler furnace. At that rate they'd have to set down for fuel by tomorrow afternoon, Silas reflected with disapproval, but he did what the Captain ordered.

"Better be bloody well important," he muttered to himself, turning a valve wheel and sending the needle of the pressure gauge dancing into the red.
Her fingertips, outstretched, sketched a farewell,
Her eyes, downcast, asked when I would return.
And I replied, "What traveler went forth
Who knew the fate God had in store for him?"

Re: Sky Raiders ( )

Young Jadin was indeed to be founded in the Raven's galley, the young Kem was fixing himself a pick-me-up snack, as he followed the captain around and needed to be awake when he was. Of course, Alexei's sleeping habits or the lack of them was taking a toll on the poor cabin boy and he found himself eating more food or catching cat naps (ironic no?) to keep up. When he was told to look for any Indie flags, he dashed into the master cabin and started rutting around in a large chest, that held the captured colors from older battles. At the very bottom of the chest was an old and battered green flag, with a golden anchor in the middle and surrounding it were five golden stars, each with nine points.

Pulling out the battered old thing, Jadin raced to the stern of the Raven, out on the boarding deck. He attached the old Indie flag to a thin rope, curled between two pulleys, one attached to the railing and one attacked up in the rigging. The young cabin boy then pulled with all his might, sending the flag up into the air, flapping madly with the increase of speed the Raven was taking.

A thought entered the wakening mind of Jadin, the captain did not have his sword or pistol, he had left those in his cabin for his nighttime walk around the deck. Smiling with a bold idea, the young Kem once again dashed into the master cabin, to collected Alexei's gear. The cabin boy felt that he really still needed to prove himself aboard ship, as he had only come aboard one year ago, after he tried to pickpocket Alexei and had gotten caught. Picking up the oddly curved cutlass and flintlock pistol that the captain used, he set off for the bow. The whole time, Alexei had been listening to the chug of the engine and watching the merchantmen draw closer.

"Captain" called Jadin, as he got close, "Your effects."

"Thank ye young mouse" said Alexei, turning to look at his cabin boy with a grin. He took the cutlass and it's sheath, then attached it to his belt. As the weight of the sharp steel caused him to adjust his stance, the Raven's captain pulled the dagger from the small of his back and pressed it into the hand of the Kem standing next to him, after taking the flintlock pistol. "Ye be needing a weapon" he said, tucking the pistol into his belt, "Should they try and board us."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Across the water and sky, as the sun started to make the eastern horizon glow dimly, the Indie merchant ship, Kanak's bell sounded. The men on dog watch were allowed to head below decks now and get some much needed sleep. One of the first airmen to take up his spot for the watch was, Ajitabh Sharma, a green hand. He stood on the port boarding deck, staring lazily out to the blank sky. The Kanak had shipped out from the trade port of Chak five days ago and still had another two weeks to go before she saw Indie again and the green hand had learned that life as a merchant sailor was boring.

Then, Ajitabh saw something, coming towards them from the shadows of night still clinging to the sky, off in the west. He couldn't right make it out but guessed it to be another airship.

"Mr. Banerjee" called Ajitabh, naming the first mate, "Come have a look at this."

The somewhat grumpy first mate walked over and looked where the stupid green hand was pointing. This was not the first time he had to baby sit the new hands and their requests for him to do things as highly annoying. But this time, the green hand had found something of interest for the old first mate. He pulled out a worn spyglass and peered at the moving shape. An Airship to be sure but he was looking for her colors. It took him a few glances at her stern but he finally managed to catch a glimpse of the flapping flag. Indie colors.

"Go wake the captain" said Mitesh Banerjee, "And tell him theres an airship he needs to look at."

OOC: What's up with all this pirate talk?:D Would you guys also want me to talk piraty? Argh, me mateys?

IC: Jeffrey nodded at the Captain's commands and hurried away, running down towards the armoury. He had taken this route so many times that he didn't even need to think where he should head next despite the elaborate maze in Alexie's ship. This was constructed so that if the ship was every boarded and defeated, the pursuing enemies would get lost, seperated, and confused allowing the defending team to pick them off.

Jeffrey rounded a corner and calmy opened the door to find his assistants sound asleep. "Wake up you scraggly maggots, we got arrrselves (get it?) a battle." he shouted, making the surprised assistants jump off thier cots and face first into the floor. As soon as Jeffrey began bellowing orders, "Gather the cannonballs, prepare the muskets, sharpen the swords..." the assistants jumped up fully awake, used to being woken up at night.

As Jeffrey surveyed the surroundings, he swore a promise to himself. Even though Alexie didn't want him in any more firefights, which Jeffrey doesn't blame him for as Jeffrey had frozen during his first battle, he decided it was time to try anew. Anyways, since when did he even listen to Alexie's commands other than in front of others in public. Putting on a fake beard and new clothes he had made lately, Jeffrey glanced sadly at his old suit. Although the new suit may prevent him from discovery, it couldn't carry as many weapons as the old suit and Jeffrey had no choice but to only take a musket and sword with him. Sighing, he left his 2nd in command in command (English language...tsk tsk tsk) and went up towards the assembly deck where he was sure the troops would have gathered, awaiting his assistant to deliver weapons up to them.

The fair maiden her skin of ivory and hair of gold slipped closer and closer to Jonathan, he smiled caressing her face and whispering softly in her ear. He pulled back for a moment then slowly leaned forward to kiss her cherry lips. Slowly her lips parted and she began....to ring?

Jonathan was jarred from his sleep as the bells crashed through his dreams ruining the moment. "Arggg...Bloody 'ell," he muttered turning over in his hammock trying to block out the persistent noise with the pile of sacking that served as his pillow. The bells however continued to toll their message and Jonathan was forced to get up with all the other men, grumbling as his feet touched down on the cold deck.

Bleery eyed he moved like a zombie to the top deck curious to see what was going on, before he was pushed down to his station below deck with the guns. Stumbling up a set of rough hewn stairs that led to the main deck he blinked as his eyes adjusted to the light. Faint though it was it was more then they had below deck. Propping his tricorn over his tangled hair and attempting to smooth the permanent wrinkles in his clothes he asked, "Wahs......goin' on?" a big yawn cutting into his speech.

Peter, his weapons rattling, his tail swaying, emerged from the depths of the airship, and stepped out onto the deck. He had shined his sword and checked the load on his guns; he was ready for action. Normally he'd be below decks, manning one of the cannons, but not until the captain ordered that they'd be using them. For now, he was keen to get a closer look at the Indie airship.

He headed over to where the captain stood. Nearby stood Jadin, clutching a dagger.

Peter coughed, "I've carried out your orders, sir. The men are roused, the cannons loaded, and I've even shined me boots." he said the last bit in jest, and couldn't help giving a small grin.

He turned to look out at the other ship. It was closer closer now, and Pete wondered whether they had yet been noticed. Surely the other ship's watch would be changing soon, if it hadn't already.

"A fat prize" called Alexei, hearing a call for knowledge. He was still staring straight ahead, watching the Indie merchant growing closer and larger. The propellers pushing the Raven spun faster, drawing death down on this patch of clear sky. The plan was simple, come along side the merchant, with most of the crew hidden either below decks or behind the wall of the main deck. Once they were along side, run out the guns for a single broadside, attach the boarding planks while the merchant crew were stunned and then slaughter and pillage to the crews content.

"Mr. Slyfurson" said Alexei, "When you hear the ship's bell cry out, that will be the time to open the gun ports and run out the cannon. We'll catch them napping we will and have ourselves a good slaughter!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Captain Ranjeet Jaiteley, of the Indien merchant ship Kanak, stood on the port side boarding deck, studying the oncoming airship with his gold plated spyglass. He was a young man, to command a ship and on an official task from the Prince of Indie, well dressed and vain. He could make out the flag flapping behind the unknown ship but her crew were still fuzzy.

"What are your orders Captain?" asked Mitesh Banerjee, rubbing his old hands.

"We'll greet them as kin" said Ranjeet, in his refined drawl, "But keep half the crew ready for trouble. We do have an important cargo."

"Aye Captain" said Mitesh, disappearing into the ship.

Jonathan heard the orders for a broad side, smiling he erased all traces of sleep from his face and raced to the lower deck to man the guns. Hauling a gun backwards on it's tracks he went through the process of loading it, that done he waited for the order to fire. As he stood he couldn't help a smile from creeping over his face, he loved gunning and he loved battle. This would be a good night for both.

Gah. This post might be messed up in area's as I'm lacking info. IW, can you post a thorough description of the Raven in the OOC?

A set of rust red and white ears swiveled round in the direction of the ringing bells. They were loud enough to echo into every crook and cranny below deck, though not a chime was heard above. Frowning slightly, Taylor stood from her seat upon a crate slowly, twisting round to crack her back. Her ears continued to swivel about in different directions, sometimes focusing on the grumbles of the crew, sometimes on the voices up on deck, then finally on the voice of Silas ordering his boys to pick up the speed of fueling The Raven. Taylor grimaced fleetingly, striding along the wooden floor and round one another, then through a door and around another. Poking her head past a large plank of wood that had no purpose in being where it was, Taylor narrowed her eyes.

"Silas, no matta what Alexei says... Don't push 'er too far. She's capable, but I hate ta see 'er stretched." Taylor's voice was slightly rough as she gave a grimacing smile, nodding to one of the twins that glanced in her direction as she pushed away from the plank of would and walked back the way she'd come briskly, adding a few more twists and turns. As she past the cabins, she poked her head in through the ajar doors to yell gruff orders at stragglers who had learned how to ignore the bell, before she finally made her way up on deck.

Ears still swiveling this way and that, Hart peered about with her deep brown eyes, assessing what was happening. Due to such, her sharp gaze caught sight of the Indie flag flapping in the wind, and her mind instantly clicked. They were up for a chase... again.

A short jog brought her up beside Alexei, and without hesitation she reached down towards his belt. Plucking the spyglass from its place, Taylor ignored her captain for a few moments as she clicked out the spyglass a few times and brought it to her left eye to better see the Indie ship. The gathering of a crew was made out, only a few members though. Taylor continued to stand in such a way before she collapsed the spyglass and held it out to Alexei, eyes still on the prize.

"I didnae tell ya that I heard rumors of an extra important cargo being shipped fer the Prince of Indie, eh?" Taylor finally turned to Alexei, quirking a brow.
"If me estimations of tha' ships departure in correspondence of ours, I say thats our loverly poppet righ' there."
