The censorship act? ( )

Postby JewelGlutton on Tue Nov 15, 2011 9:06 pm

Apparently, Congress will be disscussing a bill, to basically, "censor", the internet. Now.
This is a request, no, plea, to make sure this doesn't happen.
Here are more details.
Sadly, it's happening tommorow. Yes. So, again, a plea for freedom of speech, not to be infringed upon.

Anyone ever read George Orwell's 1984? I think the proles should stand up against this.
If North Koreans could use the Internet and this bill was on somewhere like Youtube, they would be saying "first" on that video. (Kinda a lame attempt at a joke there :P)

I'm personally glad that I live in Canada, but it will still ruin much of my Internet experience if they do this seeing that the United States has a very strong presence in the Internet world. It'll be a crying shame if this bill is passed.

I can see a few things happening here if it goes through. One, a lot of big internet companies are going to move out of the states, which means a lot of money is going with them. Probably off to Sweden with them. Two, people who can offer work arounds for the censors are going to become very huge, very fast and make a mockery of the censorship. I also think there will be huge backlash against anyone on that list once peoples daily lives start to become affected and it will either the people will submit and mark the beginning of corporate lead America, or they'll have another revolution.

Just my crazy rambling predictions ^_^

I still can't believe that they are even considering passing this act. It's possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard of!
It's pretty much going to ruin the internet. And it wont just affect America either! Oh no, the rest of the world will definitely feel the effects.
I also can't believe there are so many big companies supporting it. I mean, obviously companies like Apple will. I have one of their iPhones and I've always had a problem with them trying to control exactly what we do. And EA was another obvious one. But Dell and Microsoft? I always thought they were okay?
Well apparently there's going to be an internet strike on the 18th of this month and some big websites like mozilla and reddit are going to go down in protest.

You have to realize the people who are debating passing this into law don't, in general, don't understand the internet and it's full scope. They check email, Twitter, probably Facebook and a little Google. They don't understand how they get those services, only that they do. They don't explore the full breadth and width of the internet and so are oblivious to what will be missing once the bill passes, they're (probably) under the influence of the same companies who are trying to get the bill passed.

There is also speculation that SOPA is intentionally insane in order to help pass the follow up bill PIPA, which from my understanding is essentially the same thing only worded in such a way as to seem more reasonable than SOPA and therefore, create the feeling of "Well at least it's not as crazy as SOPA!"

Actually, I think people will revolt if it does get passed. Those leading the charge will probably be the porn fanatics, because that business will be gone in a heart beat. Playboy bunnies and Hugh Hefner have moved to Sweden where they are more appreciated. I can see that happening.

Heres a little bit of my take on the whole thing:

This "SOPA" bill reminds me of the Prohibition Act of 1920. The idiots removed alcohol from the shelves, but almost all of congress, etc, drank alcohol, and removed it in 1933. If they follow up with this silly act, people can just upload copyrighted material onto government databases and have them shut down permanently. Which will ensue a complete melt down of the government, or parties thereof.

Honestly, they're going to ruin the world if they do this. Not only will innocent sites, like this one, be in trouble, but those sites who supply the nation/world with explicit materials will become F***ED. Excuse my French here, folks, but its true. WoW, Everquest, Starcraft, etc, will be gone. Our games will be reduced to nothing playable, because they've ALL copied it from somewhere at one time or another. If you were around when WoW first popped up, it looked like a cartoonish remake of Everquest. So that'll be gone in a heart beat when people realize this and file a suit against Wizards of the Coast.

Then there's webmd, and such sites, which is helpful, but if you've seen what goes on there, it has content from other sources. That will be gone, and I know several people, doctors, nurses, med students, even stay-at-home parents who actually use the site. They'll be screwed over, because its gone, and so will other sites much like webmd.

Don't think that your little world will be gone if this thing passes. We'll be stuck in the Dark Ages AGAIN, if this thing passes. Military sites will be gone, youtube, yahoo, google, wikipedia, FACEBOOK and MYSPACE WILL BE TAKEN OFF THE INTERNET! If all those other sites were none of your concern, then think about the two sites that are most frequented and are well liked hot spots for people who want to share and friend others on the web. All the while keeping track of their where abouts, etc. The police use Facebook and Myspace to track down people, what will happen if they're taken off the internet?

Excuse my French in this instance again. Sorry folks, but if this thing gets passed, you ain't seeing your friends on facebook, myspace, or where ever. All in all, we're fucked if this thing gets passed, and for what? So people in the government to feel "safer"? Gods. Sometimes I wish I WAS alive back in the Dark Ages, and NOT in this era.

I'd just like to give a big Thank You to the admins for participating in the black out. It's looking like we may have derailed the bills, but lets not get complacent.

For those who haven't seen, I posted an update on Friday about my personal protests of the bills. (I took down Fugitive Seeking Truth for the day Wednesday as well.)

May 2012: I'm currently researching roleplaying and need any roleplayers to take an anonymous survey. It takes an average of 25 minutes to complete. This is part one, and the second survey will be released soon.

They have another one. This time the scum are using child abuse as a way to ram it through without opposition. Basically it allows the feds to monitor your internet activity through your ISP ostensibly to catch child pornographers, but we all know how these laws work. The patriot act was designed to catch terrorists but if you look at their list of 'terrorists' you will find activist groups like Green Peace on it. This law will prevent activists, journalists, and others who keep the government honest from doing their jobs.

Here is a petition against the law. If you value internet anonymity you may want to give it a look.

Also found this. A Whitehouse Petition to investigate the bribery of US senators by the MPAA. Sign it if you want to be on the offensive for once.

Green Peace is a terrorist group though.... They have ties to radical groups who blow stuff up and fire bomb buildings. Same with PETA.
