IC - The City That Never Sleeps ( )

Postby Billie_blujean on Thu Jul 24, 2008 9:24 am

"The world in which they live is the same as the world you live in. They watch the same shows, listen to the same music, and eat the same food. Except... when the sun goes down, more of them stay inside. More of them look over their shoulders as they walk to their cars and more of them stay in the streetlights as they walk down the sidewalk. More of them also go missing each year.

The shadows are longer, the nights are darker. More of them are afraid of the dark. And they should be. Because here there be monsters."

It was late. Leon hunched his shoulders against the cold and walked briskly along the dark street. His face was illuminated momentarily in the soft glow of a streetlight; a young, handsome face, with blue eyes gazing out from under shaggy brown hair. His expression was grim; he wasn't comfortable being out this late at night. It wasn't safe. You never knew who you may meet down some dark alley.

Being a Werewolf, he wasn't really worried about the average human, unless they had a gun loaded with silver bullets. No, it was the Inhuman, the Supernatural beings that one should be wary of. And he should be extra careful these days. Last week he had noticed someone who seemed to be shadowing him. It had taken several alleys and a couple vaulted fences to lose him, and now he wondered if he had in fact imagined the whole thing.

He entered an all night cafe and sat down at a booth by the window, ordering a coffee. He sat there, slowly sipping the steaming liquid, staring out into the night.

Sybil kept her head down as she made her way home. Tonight had been a busy night, and she hated being kept so late after dark. But, alas, that was the way things went when you worked with vampires - at least, that's what Jinx kept telling her. She pulled her bandanna tighter around her head and glanced about - where was Jinx, speaking of that obnoxious little black cat.

Yawning, she skipped into a cafe to grab a cup of coffee to go. She looked around for Raikou, her werewolf friend, but didn't see her. The smell of food called to her stomach, and she sighed heavily, sitting down at a table. She might as well eat while she was here.

Growls and snarls could be heard coming from a large rich looking house. It was very big being able to hold a very large family or pack. No human could hear the horrifying sounds that were coming from the masion. The outside looked completely normal, but if you weren't human you would know that something big was going on.

Around the masion were big dogs that looked more like wolves walking all around the area. They were very aware of what was going on inside the elegant walls. There was a price to pay with everything you do in this pack. Make one wrong move and you could be severely punished by the elders of the pack. They make all the rules and they control everything.

Inside the large building the growls and snarls were getting louder as you move into the family room of the house. Many pack members were gathered around making a some what grouped in circle around some of the packs strongest warriors as well as the elders. A small bloody mess of black hair and tan skin in the shape of a young woman was in the center of all this.

"You should be grateful that we haven't killed you yet. We know about your little meetings with that vampire lover. Are you trying to get us all killed?" A red headed elder named Vince asked looking down at the woman.

"We will not be this graceful next time. You must put the pack first and yourself last." A black haired elder named Satsu growled lowly with the promise of pain in his almost black eyes. He had no compassion for females and this one really got under his skin.

The last elder had long blond hair and leaned down to the woman who was holding her sides in pain. "Know your place, you belong to this pack. We are not your family, but your masters, remember that and we will not have to go through this." His voice came out in a loud snarl, but his face remained calm as he stood. Looking down at her he tuned his back walking away as the others made a path for him and the other elders. "Oh and make sure you have her clean up that mess before she is to return to doing her normal duty's." Jaakou said to one of the warriors that were standing around the woman. They nodded and watched as the elders walked out of the room.

The woman slowly stood to her feet and having her hair cover her face, but not the cold look in her eyes that made the other wolves back away in fear. She was far stronger than they were which is why they needed to keep her on a very short leash. Her pride and duty kept her from attacking them, even they knew that she wouldn't hurt them. She felt the shape pain and blood dripping from the claw marks on her body. Twitching her hand slightly the blood on the ground disappeared and turned to water then ice. The ice moved back into her body as she walked away out of the circle. No one dear stop her knowing that the elders where the only ones who could give her orders.

"I'm coming Sybil." Raikou whispered she didn't care that her so called pack will have her head for disobeying them again. She would do as she pleased, but she would protect them no matter what.

Leon leaned back in his chair, scrutinizing the woman who had just entered the cafe. She was thin, and had very black eyes. She seemed to be in her mid-twenties. A bandanna covered her head, but Leon had a sneaking suspicion that it wasn't just for fashion. There was something...unnatural about her. She didn't seem completely human.

Leon made a decision. He was new to this city, sort of passing through, really. He didn't know anyone here, yet. He had no friends, no allies. And no enemies. he reminded himself. But he was feeling a little alone right now, and could use some company.

He got to his feet and casually walked over to the the woman's table. He smiled slightly, "Mind if I sit?"

Sybil looked up at the man before her. Her nostrils flared as she felt the panic rising inside of her at the sight of the man. Not human she thought to herself. Smiling a bit shakily, she gestured to the seat across from her. "Not at all. New around here?" Her thoughts crept to Prince Tony's protection and her friend Raikou's promise. She admonished herself internally, knowing that she could hold her own. Plus, if this man was hostile, she'd have known. That was one good thing about being an oracle.

She took a deep breath and forced her heart to slow. She shouldn't be this jumpy. Perhaps it had been her run-in with the Scarecrow Ministry earlier that night. She understood the need to be wary, but honestly. Scaring her that way? It definitely made her more sure that she would remain outside of the local changeling freehold. She did not need people like that as her allies.

Leon smiled and sat down opposite the woman. "I am indeed. I tend to wander, as being in the same place for very long becomes tiresome for me." He did not mention that by having no permanent residence, he was harder to track.

He leaned back in his chair. "I'm Leon," he said, and took a sip of his coffee.

Sybil nodded slowly. "I'm Miss Fortune," she said, smiling a bit. "Welcome to our city." She sipped her coffee and picked at the eggs the waitress set before her, considering whether or not it would be rude to light a cigarette. "Do you plan on being here long?"

Leon smiled at the name, but didn't comment. She seemed pleasant enough. "I'm not sure, really. Probably a month or so, unless I find a reason to stay longer."

He wondered what sort of supernatural beings lived here. If a tribe had claimed this city as their territory, he might not be welcome. Some werewolves have a very low opinion of tribeless Ghost Wolves like himself.

He watched her pick at her food. "What's it like? Living here, I mean. Does this city have anything interesting to see?"

Sybil shrugged. "It depends. We have some lovely parks, a really nice City Center - lots of gushing fountains and the like. And the night life is... well, it's typically pretty hoppin'. But I get the feeling that's not the sort of answer you're looking for, is it?" She took a bite and chewed slowly, hoping she was just imagining the predatory strength she felt washing over her. She hated her nature - hide, protect what's yours. She wanted to be strong, a fighter, like Raikou. Instead, she was destined to forever seek out shelter when the big kids came out to play.

Leon nodded. She seemed to know that he wasn't entirely human, and that he wasn't just idly chatting. He leaned forward in his chair and spoke more quietly, "You're quite right, I am interested in a rather different sort of answer." he gave a faint smile, "I'm not your average human, as you may have guessed, and since you don't seem hostile, I wondered if you could tell me what sort of...people live around here. People that I should watch out for, particularly Tribes."

If he was somehow wrong, and she really was unaware of his nature, he could probably talk his way out of this. He hadn't actually come out and said anything really bold, just in case he had misjudged her.

Raikou walked into the coffee shop knowing that Sybil would be there somewhere. Her wounds have almost healed, but the scent of blood was still very noticeable. Looking around the dime lite place she spotted her friend as well as someone esle. Then as she walked closer she was able to smell that he was like her, but it didn't seem like he was in a tribe because if he was he wouldn't be in her pack's territory.

"who is your friend?" Her voice was cold as ice as she looked darkly at the man that sat across from Sybil. All thoughts of what happened before disappeared as her body tensed.

Sybil glanced up. "Oh, Raikou! Hello! This is Leon. He's new here and just visiting," She turned to Leon and smiled widely - she was nervous. She hated being nervous. "Leon, this is Raikou. She's my friend. She can probably answer your questions a lot better than I can." She licked her lips and shot Raikou a look that she hoped said, It's okay, he seems on the level, but figured it probably said, I'm completely shaking apart because I'm surrounded by predators and that's not fun for me.

Leon turned towards the newcomer, his body tense. He new immediately that she was a Werewolf, and she smelled of blo0d. She also gave him a dark look, which caused him to tense up even more, half expecting her to attack him. She was a tribal wolf, it seemed, for he could smell others on her, but he couldn't place which tribe it was.

The She-wolf and Miss Fortune seemed to know each other, and that eased his mind, slightly. Raikou, huh? he thought, searching his mind for the name. He came up blank -- he hadn't heard of her before.

He gave a hesitant smile and nodded to Raikou, "Ah...Hello. Nice to meet you." he shifted uncomfortably in his seat, and took a sip of his coffee. "I was just asking Miss Fortune about...the inhabitants of this fine city. I'm curious as to what tribe or tribes have claimed it as their territory."

He surprised himself with his bluntness. But why not be blunt? The cafe was nearly empty, and he was talking to a Werewolf and a...well, he hadn't quite figured out what Miss Fortune was yet.

Raikou looked at the other werewolf and nodded. She had a feeling that he wasn't going to attack her and she didn't think he was there to harm anyone. Her hate for her pack caused her not to act on the ways of what a tribal werewolf. Usually her kind would attack first and ask questions later, but she didn't feel like fighting.

"It is nice to meet you Leon." She said as she sat next to Sybil and never taking her eyes off of him. Even if she didn't feel anything bad about him she wasn't going to just let her guard down, she was a warrior after all.

Sybil grinned. Things were apparently pretty cool - or, at least as cool as they could be, considering her company. "So, like I was saying, Leon. Raikou here could answer your Uratha-related questions. And I'm probably your best bet for vampire and other unmentionables-related questions. Although I'm sure you could get that info from other sources, too."

She gestured to the waitress for another cup of coffee and looked down at her food. With Raikou here, she felt a little more brave - she took a forkful of scrambled eggs and shoved it into her mouth, raising her eyebrows a bit at Jinx, who was waiting outside and gesturing for him to head on home without her. He turned sharply, lifted his tail into the air, and strutted off into the distance. Hedgebeasts. Whatever.

Leon nodded, giving a quick smile. "Which tribe are you from? If you don't mind me asking." he looked at Raikou. He wondered about the scent of blo0d that was on her. Was it hers? He knew that tribes were often very harsh when giving out punishments. That was one of the reasons why he became a Ghost Wolf.

The smell of blood didn't bother her at all because she was use to it by now. Her wounds have already healed so she didn't really worry about it. It didn't smell like he belonged to a tribe at all or maybe he washed the scent off.

"The Storm Lords." Raikou answered coldly, she wasn't being cold to him, but just thinking about her pack was putting her in a very unfriendly mood. Her pack was known for their harsh and hard punishments. She was the object of great hate and many took their angur out on her.

((urgh...I'm out of ideas. This conversation is going nowhere, since Leon doesn't seem to have a reason for his questions...time for some excitement. :D))

"Ah, okay." Leon replied. She didn't sound very friendly, but he was a werewolf who had randomly showed up in her tribe's territory. Maybe she considered him to be a possible threat.

Then his ears perked up. Someone had tapped on the big glass window of the cafe.

He turned to see a figure standing on the outside of the cafe, looking in. The figure grinned malevolently at Leon, then walked off into the dark. Leon's jaw clenched, and he cursed under his breath. He had been found. His unknown stalker had managed to catch up to him at last.

He stood up abruptly, sending his chair falling backwards, and gave Sybil and Raikou a quick, strained smile, "Excuse me, but it's late. I must be off. It was a pleasure meeting you both. Perhaps we shall meet again. Goodbye."

And with a curt nod in their direction, he turned and hastened towards the door.
