Nathaniel was sitting in a crowded room. A hospital ward. And people kept calling him "Doctor." There was someone lying on the bed. A woman. It was his mother.
There were men in trenchcoats and hats bustling past, on their way to work. "Good evening, Doctor Flint," they would say. There were nurses in white dresses standing around the hospital bed, lights shining out onto the street. "That's Doctor Flint's mother," some people would say.
"My mother is dead," he would protest, over and over.
One of the nurses turns around. It is Mariah. She keeps switched outfits. First she's a nurse, then she's in a bikini, now a fur coat, now a construction worker's outfit, now she's completely naked, now she's dressed up like she's on the crew of the starship Enterprise. Nathaniel calls to her.
"You've got to put her out of her misery, Nathaniel," Mariah said, handing him a chainsaw.
"With this?" Nathaniel said, looking at the chainsaw. "My mother is already dead!"
Mariah laughed at him. Her giggle turns into a belly laugh, then a high-pitched cackle. Nathaniel's mother groans on the bed, as another doctor, a tall, sane, handsome man, took Mariah in his arms and kissed her.
At this, Nathaniel woke up. He heard a car door slam outside. He looked at the bed next to him. No Mariah. Panicking, he picked up his cell phone and called her.
{Nathaniel?}
"Yes, honey?"
{I'm afraid the wedding is off.}
"What? You can't do this to me!" Nathaniel yelled, ignoring anything the actual Mariah might be saying on the other end. "I need you! You're the keystone in my brain. If you go, I'll go crazy!" The Mariah in his head giggled.
{You already are crazy, darling. I don't want to marry a nutcase. Who would?}
"Are you having an affair?"
{Of course I am. Why wouldn't I be? There are so many tall, sane, handsome men out there.}
"Mariah!" Nathaniel yelled into the phone, "I won't let you! I won't let you leave me! Who are you having an affair with? You'd better tell him to watch his back, Mariah, because if I ever find him, I'll kill him!"
He hung up, and got out of bed. He practically flew down the stairs, into the kitchen. Opening drawer after drawer he muttered, "Where is it, where is it... this is why you try to keep me from my habits...so I don't hurt your lover boy..." His face lit up as he opened a cabinet, finding a large can of kerosene. Nathaniel giggled, taking the can out. He shook it, hearing the liquid slosh around, to make sure Mariah hadn't emptied it. Grinning broadly, he carried the can out to his car.
