"Mariah," Nat said, "I'm not an idiot, you know. You don't need to treat me like I'm five years old. And it's just that when I tried to turn the stove on, nothing happened. And you know what happened last time I called the company to fill the thing up...and I...know the voices aren't...real. I just...can't...help it...when I listen to them... You know?" he sounded as if he was having trouble wording it properly. "You want me to take the pills? OK, I'll take the pills..." Nat held the phone to his ear with his shoulder, and picked up a small white bottle. I don't know why I have to take these, he thought. I'm not crazy. {You're right, you're not crazy. What are you taking those pills for? Yes, Nathaniel, what are you taking those pills for?} Nat put a pill in his hand, and filled a glass with water. "Leave me alone," he muttered. {I wonder what would happen if you set that on fire, Nathaniel.} What, this? he thought, holding up the second pill. "Mariah told me not to go near the matches, and there's no more propane," he murmured. {Why do you always listen to what she tells you, Nathaniel?} I love her. {She doesn't love you.} "Yes, she does," Nat said, louder this time. The auditory hallucinations continued, rising in volume. Several people started talking at once. Then Mariah's voice began playing itself in Nathaniel's head. {Nathaniel, what are you doing?} Thinking it was coming from the phone, Nat said, "oh, I'm taking the pills, like you told me to." {If you take medication, I'll love you. Take all the pills!} the false Mariah said, sounding angry. "What? You told me not to take all of them. I need to hang up, the voices are talking to me." But he didn't hang up, because he thought Mariah was still talking to him. {Nathaniel, I would love you more than anything if you burned down the house across the street. It's bigger and nicer than ours, and I don't like it there.} "But you told me not to touch the matches!" Nathaniel protested, still thinking he was talking to his finance. The other voices became louder and more persistent, and Mariah's voice became higher, and more irritating. {I hate you, Nathaniel! I wish you would die!} "Mariah!" Then he started saying what she was saying aloud. "I never want to see you again!" eh muttered, then, in normal volume, "but why, Mariah, what did I do? You don't treat me properly. You only think of yourself! No, I think of you all the time, in fact---I'm talking to...myself...aren't I?"
At that moment, the volume of the hallucinations in his head became too great. His voice rising to an eerily high pitch, Nathainel yelled into the phone, dropping it, as well as the glass of water.
"LEAVE ME ALONE!"
