Caleb listened as Scythe said, "We must keep you safe". He like that. He stood up a little straighter, grinned a little bit. Unfortunately he still didn't have a clue what he and his minions should do, but it gave him the courage to open his mouth and see what would come out.
What came out was rather brilliant. "Nothing. Do nothing. There are probably a couple we could get a messenger to in time, but if we did that, the rest of their sacrifices would be for nothing. 'Cause we're gonna let them go to their meeting. And just... see what happens. We can see who shows up to ambush them. Those unnatural, self-righteous traitors aren't gonna expect anything from us, since they don't know we know, so they won't watch what they say. We can't get an army there in time, but we can get one or two men to hide in the shadows. W can learn so much. There'll be a couple men I'll regret losing, but the information is worth so much more. So much more."
He was grinning more now. He'd saved the day. He'd taken a crisis and turned it into that other thing the "crisis" Chinese symbol also stood for, what was it again? Opportunity. A fabulous opportunity. And any General worth his salt would make it out alive anyway, right? A test. Yes, that's what it was,a test.
Feeling that he was pretty damn brilliant, he crossed his arms over his chest and raised a challenging eyebrow at Scythe. Somehow his right hand man always found something wrong with his plans, no matter how genius, how praiseworthy.
He stood and grinned like an idiot child and waited for the rebuff.
