The Grassroots Tournament - 2010: OOC ( )

The Grassroots Tournament

Welcome one, and welcome all to the Grassroots 2010, which will be known henceforth as GR or GR2010. Due to the lack of a GT this year, I have decided to start up a similar tournament of comparable scale, with a twist (and a few minor tweaks due to my own tastes). This tournament is a T1 powered character, single-elimination bracket, much like the GT which has failed to materialize this year. Part of the reason I am hosting this tournament is so that we have a notable competition on tempo with that of the GT; many people were expecting and anticipating it to happen this year (myself included).

So what's the big shocker? It just so happens that the professionals and top ranked fighters have been banned from entering this tournament. You read that correctly. No Skallagrim. No Guts. No Circ, Mew, Alucroas. None of them. In more defined terms, if you were top 8 at the GT2008, or if you are top 10 in the Hall of Records as of the time of this post, you cannot enter. A few of these people have volunteered to help me run the tournament, as I am not a fighter of great stature as they are. Some will be making rulings and judgments on matches, deciding victors, while others will be looking through character profiles and deciding on whether or not they are acceptance worthy.

Sign-ups are on a first come first serve basis, and will last two weeks (now until September 14th, 2010 at midnight EST). There will be a safe point at 16 fighters (characters submitted and accepted), at which the tournament will run if the desired 32 do not sign up. There will also be 8 reserve slots open. If, in the first round, a player does not show in 5 days, they will be replaced from someone on the reserve list. Players that sign up must have the intention of participating. In total, 40 spots are up for grabs. There will be one champion; the rookie fighter who has what it takes to compete with the big leagues.

There are a few notes regarding the physics of the dimension this tournament will be taking place in, which effects what powers your characters cannot have. They are as follows:

- Healing, regeneration, or reconstruction of damaged characters, in any way, shape, or form is disallowed.
- No manipulation of time, space, or opening dimensional rifts.
- Superforms, (example being Super Saiyans and other powered up states) are also banned.
- Canon characters are incompatible with the Grassroots dimension and therefore cannot enter.
- Guns and other projectile weapons will be unable to pierce beyond the dermis (or equivalent nonlethal layer) of opponents.
- Any additional effects the projectiles carry will also be rendered non-lethal.
- The battlefield will be in a constant state of dusk, with both the sun and moon visible.

And as a "no stronger than this" general guideline:

Anime League Character Tier Guidelines wrote:Level 6 || The charisma and influence necessary to muster an army of elite soldiers, and access to the technology needed to build and operate a small space craft capable of interstellar travel (or a magic dragon from the future, whatever floats your boat). A revolutionary, extremely potent and refined control over one or several elements, usage of alchemy, ninjutsu, etc. Highly adept and skilled weapon dexterity and skill. Superhuman reflexes, speed, and agility. Able to lift 2000 lbs several times. Your powers and skills rival those of Gandalf the White, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Himura Kenshin at their best.

To sign up, PM me your character list, or post a link to it within this thread. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

May the strongest grass blade emerge highest.

roleplay/the-multiverse/characters/taretha-rake/

I'd like to enter in with a previously deceased character of mine, Taretha Rake. She's a skilled summoner of water and wind (actually, a better term would be Water / Airbender, but that's very, very Avatar-ish.)

Ahh, I remember her...Cryoface took her down quite handily to allow me to go to 3-0.

Does that mean you have a dog in this fight QB?
The writer who cares more about words than about characters, action, setting, atmosphere is unlikely to create a vivid and continuous dream; he gets in his own way too much; in his poetic drunkenness, he can't tell the cart- and its cargo- from the horse.

I'm willing to enter this, if I'm not expected to do anything particularly spectacular. I'm better at low tier fighting but, here's my character.

Shai Sunamon.

I've never been good at tournaments but... might I reserve a spot? I'm currently renovating my character... but say, 16 fighters? do we have that many active?

As a judge, and character submissions type'a guy for this tournament, I declare

Taretha Rake, and Shai Sunamon Accepted

However, Sirius, you have WAY too many powers/abilities for a Level 6. You have at least ten summons, and like 20 powers. Condense the profile down to say, 1-2 summons, and approximately five 'mastered' powers, and around five 'adept' powers. After doing that, you'll be good to go.

Thats why i said i needed to tweak it a bit before opening day. Wanted to make sure i got a spot!

There's only 10 or 11 "powers" in total with four summons and I'll be removing 2 before opening day.

In general he's a beastmaster-earth user. Each summon disappears when the next comes out, they have to go in order (unless he's charging but again need to include) and there's a three turn cooldown between each summon.

As far as the abilities go they're just generalizations of certain earth moves he can do. Since he's a earthmancer i decided to list his big ones. I could certainly take out a few, but he'd still be able to use them since he's mastered the earthen element. I will definitely be taking out stoneskin level 2 (superform) as it is banned, and probably earthquake as well. but don't the rest fall under the category of:

I'll try to iron out the profile in full detail tomorrow. There's a lot of restrictions on him that i have in my head but haven't made it paper just yet. I'll submit it for further review then.

Wouldn't mind hearing back on the elemental abilities before then though.

"Extremely potent or refined control" doesn't mean "knows anything and everything about every kind of everything that can be..." It just means that he'd be a master of one or several moves, adept at a few others, etc. I could live with powers that're refined down to a number somewhat equal to the other participants. You could even mesh a few of the powers in with similar powers, and that would work fine. I just don't want to deal with claims of "He's overpowered because he has more powers than us" and the like, ya' ken?

For the record, I'm Valkyr. Apparently I had another account that I'd forgotten completely about. So, I'll be using this one from now on, as it -should- and probably does link to my HoR account.
Literature is an occupation in which you have to keep proving your talent to people who have none.

You can approach the act of writing with nervousness, excitement, hopefulness, or even despair the sense that you can never completely put on the page what's in your mind and heart. Sort of, Skall...I've already PMed TS about my character, but apparently I need to post it up here to get it accepted, because he's just running the organizational stuff whereas Lysander has the acceptances. It is true, however. Check my Hall of Records profile, which has a complete fight history.

Anyway, here he is, for better or worse. I didn't want to post him here to avoid the metagame maturing before its time, but it seems I have no choice. Also, some of you may have been hearing about my secret super-weapon I was saving for the GT? Turns out he'd be /too/ super for this event, so I re-tooled an existing character I don't think I've used too often.

I find that number of powers generally doesn't matter when it comes to a character using manipulation of elements. It's like telling a swordsman to not swing their blade in a certain way because they have "too many ways to swing your sword listed in your profile". Silly talk. Most of Sirius's powers are implied due to "Earth manipulation"; he just merely lists some of the notable/confusing ones. As for the summons, he is only allowed to have one on the field at a time as he has stated, so that won't get too out of hand. Otherwise, I do not think he is too far out for a level 6 character. If a person had stated their character used elemental manipulation at a revolutionary level, but only listed 3 or 4 actual techniques in detail, you'd let them through, despite the fact that they'd definitely come up with more moves in their battles.

Edit: You already have. The thunder/wind character near the beginning of submissions.

And although Manti is my friend, I do not think his character is overpowered. Would you have placed Toph (from The Last Airbender), who is most certainly an exceptional, even revolutionary (she invents metal bending), above the Level 6 mark? Their ability in earth manipulation is similar.

I'll await your response, Valkyr, seeing as you have superior roleplaying experience. I merely challenge your judgment to make you think.

As for making up techniques within a match, if it's clearly within their abilities (I invented Magnus's Slate Pinging mid match to great effect), then I say go for it. However, I will be very harsh to those who attempt to overstep the boundaries and formulate bullshit ways for them to win. Any power created within a match that is deemed inappropriate to the character will be highly frowned upon and you could get thrown from the match.

In short, ingenuity should be looked upon as a good thing, but abuse of the lenience required to allow it should not.

Do you mind if I add an addition to Taretha's equipment? Namely, a canteen strapped to her back about the size of a gallon jug filled with water? I'm going to assume there isn't a river flowing through the arena.

Edited Sirius for the sake of argument.

For the lazy-
Removed both the manticore summon and the Hydra summon.
Removed Earthquake and Superform.
Removed Phoenix Ultimate abilities. Phoenix will now "heat up" and flame based attacks will become more powerful the longer it refrains from using fire abilities.
Creatures can now be summoned in any order. Cooldown comes into effect after the first creature is summoned.
Sirius no longer requires "teching to Golem" for some of his more advanced attacks (notably spine wave)

Once again, with feeling Sirius

Anyone else I might have forgotten to list outright, accepted.
