Imperium of Mankind
The Imperium of Mankind has had a troubled past, many millenia ago Mankind was scattered around the stars of the galaxy, one man rose to unite them all under one banner, he founded the Imperium of Mankind and became the first Emperor of Mankind.
During the course of it's structuring the Imperium divided itself into multiple sections to manage different parts of the growing empire, the most well known are the Adeptus Mechanicus, Tech Priests who worship a spirit of the Machine God on Mars, they were the core of the Imperium providing technology, machines and most importantly it's super soldier army, the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines.
The Imperium suffered a major setback during the 38th millenia when the forces of Chaos conspired to destroy the Imperium at the core, the traitor Horus struck at the Emperor and mortally wounding him, the Emperor in his last light banished the traitor to the warp and ascended to Godhood atop the Golden Throne...his body soon deteriorated into a carcass kept alive by machines that fed him the lifeforce of men, his mind stuck in the warp fighting a neverending battle against Chaos.
It is now the 41st millenia and Mankind has since recovered from the Horus Heresy and established itself as the centre of mankind once more.

Non Military Organizations
The God-Emperor of Mankind
The God-Emperor watches over all mankind as he battles Chaos in the warp, his body kept alive by his faithful servants and his blessings protecting all his people.
Adeptus Terra
Adeptus Terra are the Lords of Terra, they rule over the Imperium while the God-Emperor protects them.
The Ecclesiarchy
The church of the God-Emperor was founded from one cult that reigned over all others during a religious debate, the Ecclesiarchy is split into two sections, the Convent Prioris which reside on Terra and Convent Sanctorum on Ophelia VII this was to stop any religious takeovers and power struggles.
Adeptus Mechanicus
The Tech Priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus maintain the mighty Imperium and service all manner of machines, they worship the Machine God as opposed to the God-Emperor but are still not seen as heretics due to their devotion to the Imperium.
The Inquisition
The Inquisition are composed of those that hunt the witch, the heretic, the xenos, the mutant and the daemon and stop the root of corruption by severing it at the roots, the Inquisition is split into three subsections, Ordo Hereticus (Deals with rogue psykers and heretics), Ordo Malleus (Deals with the daemons of Chaos and its spawn) and Ordo Xenos (Deals with the hostile alien races that threaten the Imperium)
Military Organizations
Adeptus Astartes
The God-Emperors Angels of Death, these super soldiers fight for the Emperor on the frontlines protecting the Imperium from utter destruction.
Imperial Guard
The Imperial Guard are the ordinary human soldiers of the Imperium, what they lack in strength they make up for in numbers and manpower, they usually serve under the Space Marines and other military forces
Adepta Sororitas
The Adepta Sororitas are the Order Militant of the Ordo Hereticus, they make sure the Ecclesiarchy and Imperium are protected from the witch, the heretic and the mutant maintaining true faith in the God-Emperor.
Officio Assassinorum
A guild of assassins that serve the Emperor in dispatching would be threats or key threats using stealth or even brute force, the current known temples of the Officio Assassinorum are the Culexus (Warp Void assassins that strike fear into enemies), Callidus (Stealthy assassins that can change their body structure to disguise and infiltrate enemy lines), Eversor (Executioners that maul their way through enemy lines to find their target), Vindicare (Expert snipers that can end uprisings with a single bullet) and Death Cult (Assassins that hunt those with a blood debt to the Emperor)
