The Life Noir OOC ( )

Postby Jadeling Hawkins on Sat Dec 13, 2008 1:11 pm

This is the OOC thread for The Life Noir, a game that takes place in New York, New York, during 1923. Prohibition (the illegalization of alcohol) is in effect. Crime is rampant in many forms, and corruption can be found in every nook, cranny and corner. How will you make your fortune? Selling gigglewater in dark alleys? Tracking down criminals to clean up the streets? Or are you just going to make sure you match up with an egg?

Da rules:

1. Follow the general RP etiquette. This does require that you know the general RP etiquette, and yes, you will be held responsible for this. This involves god-modding and such things.
2. At least seven good, hearty sentences per post.
3. Literacy required. No text talk or flagrant abuse of the English language.
4. No OOC in the IC.
5. Try to keep it period acceptable. No ninjas or bazookas or cell phones.

And that's it. You do, of course, have to receive have your character approved. Sorry, but it gets messy and cluttered if it's just a 'leap in when you feel like it' scenario.

A site that you may find helpful: 1920s Slang, and another with even more awesome slang: MOAR slang!
Because 20's slang is the best. And will be seen frequently in this game.

Also, here's a site with a great comic that this game will have much the same feel as, given the basic set up...of course, the comic's characters are all cats...and ours won't be...but it's still awesome, so check it out.

Basic requirements for character profile:

Code: Select all
Name:
Age:
Gender:
Physical Appearance: (picture may be used)
Profession: (Gangster, Bootlegger, Fruit cart runner, etc.)
Brief bio:

I'll be posting my characters (there will be three main ones, so I can better ensure everyone has someone to play with) momentarily. The IC thread will also be up as soon as we have a healthy cast.

My characters:
Name: Fiona Muirenn, aka 'Lady Luck.'
Age: 22
Gender: Female
Physical Appearance: Blond hair to her shoulders and cut to curl sweetly around her chin, blue eyes and short of stature. Fiona is always careful with her appearance, taking time to fix up her hair and face in an attention-grabbing manner. After all, presentation is a large part of her job.
Profession: Gangster, a member and possible heir of an up-and-coming Irish Gang, four generations in the making.
Brief bio: Fi grew up attending brewery meetings and the occasional execution of those that could not pay for protection. Therefore, she finds her current life of running around and checking up on family colleagues, dodging nosy Investigators and collecting fees relatively normal. She has become a decent shot with a pistol, but it's hard to practice when every time you use it, you have to toss it in the nearest body of water. Fiona scratched her way up to a position of prominence in the underground world from a position of relative nothingness, being the third child and second daughter of an influential Irish 'businessman.' Through a use of bullying, excessive violence and even more excessive wit, Fiona has become well known by her alias, 'Lady Luck,' partially for her influence in the good or bad fortune of friends and enemies. At this point in her life, she is merely waiting for an ailing uncle to fade so she can step up into a higher position on the chain. Still, spending all day bouncing from bar to bar has its perks.

(Brigit may not appear as frequently as the others, but will have action as needed)
Name: Brigit Lucy Muirenn
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Physical Appearance: (picture may be used) Light red hair, kept a little less than shoulder length and allowed to hang loosely around her face without being bothered by styles or curls. Fair skin, a few light freckles on her nose. Dresses in casual men's clothes (shirts, trousers, suspenders, box shoes) as they are easier to do her current work in. Noticeable muscle in her arms and torso, highly expressive facial features.
Profession: (Gangster, Bootlegger, Fruit cart runner, etc.) Gangster muscle.
Brief bio: Fiona Muirenn's cousin. Raised in Yonkers along with six older brothers, Brigit has been getting into and out of trouble since her first theft at the age of seven years and thirty-four days (an apple off of a cart). Her parents are very proud. As one might assume of a daughter from a very Irish family, she has grown into a feisty, no-nonsense woman that will throw a punch before the hat hits the floor. It is this exact beat first, don't worry about the questions kind of attitude that has resulted in Brigit and her brothers, along with a few of their rough and tumble friends, receiving an invitation from Lady Luck to come and stay in the Big Apple for a while to help re-establish some order in the underground.

Name: Charles Wallenstein
Age: 26
Gender: Male
Physical Appearance: (picture may be used) Charlie is long limbed and wiry, and wouldn't be considered 'imposing' by...well, anyone, really. He has a friendly face, but is rather scruffy looking. He has mousy brown hair that looks as if he tried to crop it short and missed a few key areas, and blue eyes that crinkle with amusement when he talks.
Profession: (Gangster, Bootlegger, Fruit cart runner, etc.) Detective
Brief bio: Charlie grew up in the Big Apple, the middle child of a factory worker and his sickly wife, and through a delicate course of events found himself on the law's side, though he could have very easily wound up on the other side of the street. Charlie has made a concerted effort to clean up his streets, and through years of hard work and study has just recently managed to become a detective. Knowing that the good guys are sprinkled in among the bad, and vice versa, Charlie works every angle he can find to weed out the crooks and restore New York to the glory it's never yet seen.

Name: Benjamin Goldberg
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Physical Appearance: Though his features are a little too angular, a little too glance-twice to be considered handsome (a prominent once-broken nose, a wide, thin-lipped mobile mouth), he is at least striking. His eyes are a pale, oddly-fragile blue that contrasts with his dark, untidy hair and the near-permanent 5 o'clock shadow about his long jaw. His tall, lean frame has lost some of the definition it used to have and his clothes; bohemian, thrown-on and often a little tatty, seem to hang off him.
Profession: Journalist
Brief bio: Once upon a time, the young Ben Goldberg had been idealistic, determined and eager to write. Probably. After a few short months dreaming of reaching the top and several longer years gathering dust at the bottom, any illusions the native New Yorker had are long gone. He scrapes together a living by writing sensationalist garbage for the lurid New York World and the odd piece of cynical sentimental fiction for monthly magazines. Having picked up an alcohol addiction along the way, Ben spends his nights in underground gin mills sitting next to the gangsters and criminals he once vowed to expose and his days in a cramped apartment above a drugstore in the Bronx half-heartedly writing articles on a second-hand typewriter.

Name: Alicia Jones, 'Lucy'
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Physical Appearance: Her slightly-wavy brown hair extends just a few inches past her ears, her left side a little longer than her right. She always dresses smart, her clothes free of wrinkles and her make-up without blemish. Not a striking beauty, but she has pleasant features.
Profession: Bootlegger
Brief bio: Alicia Jones is a single woman living off of an impressive inheritance (considering her class) left by her deceased parents as she searches for proper work to support herself... Or that's how the public story goes anyway. She already has a job selling illegal liquor to various speakeasies, and sometimes on the street. In fact, she's been in the business long enough to get a small reputation under the simple alias 'Lucy'. She has also developed quite a few connections here and there, however, this is not a well known fact so her direct person-to-person influence is rather limited. Although Alicia can be a great aid to her 'customers' there is a very hushed-up side of her as well. Several gin mills and illegal importers have also been tipped off by her, mostly because they either double-crossed her and/or refused to pay a debt.

Name: Lacey Brown
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Physical Appearance: Lacey is a beautiful girl, for lack of a better word. Her hair is a lovely red color with copper undertones, falling in subtle waves a couple of inches above the small of her back. The tresses are most often covered by a black wig she wears that comes just past her chin; the traditional flapper style. Her face is made up of elegant, slightly angular features, with very golden, almost honey, colored eyes. Bare, her features are quite delicate and feminine. However, they are almost always dolled up with make up-smokey eye shadow, crimson lip stainer-so that they become more seductive and mysterious. She is of a curvy, slender figure, with fair skin.
Profession: Flapper girl. She makes her income through prostitution.
Brief bio: Lacey once lived the luxurious life. When she was a little girl, innocent, sweet, her father was a notorious writer for the New Yorker, and she and her family lived comfortably in a rather nice flat. It was a good life. That is, until her father died young from sickness. Everything went down hill from there.
Her mother scrambled to find work after the death of her husband, but no one wanted an inexperienced employee. So she sank lower, making money through prostitution. She'd tuck Lacey and her sister, Theresa, in bed in the evening and say she'd be back before they woke up. Every night, however, Lacey stayed awake long past then, listening as her mother prepared herself and went out to make her rounds. She never really knew what her mother did those nights, except that when she came back in the morning her lipstick was smeared, her hair rumpled, and her purse fuller.
She didn't ask questions. That is, until one night, when the truth was revealed. Lacey had heard the door open and then close again one night when she lay awake, and got out of bed to investigate. In the kitchen, her mother was on the floor. Under her was a man Lacey had never seen before, his eyes alive with lust.
She watched in horror as her mother teased and petted this stranger, this stranger that was not her father. Her mother had promised her, when father died, that she would never love again, she would never replace him, yet there she was.
Lacey hadn't known what to do. So she packed her bags, grabbed her coat and fled before her mother could be distracted enough to stop her. She didn't know where she was going, all she knew was that she had to get away.
It was winter, and New York was harsh to the homeless. Lacey just barely managed to scrape through until spring, never hearing anything from her mother. Eventually, when she was 18, she realized that she had to find someway to earn money, a way that involved little experience.
Lacey was aware of the looks she got from men and the jealousy she generated for women, so she used that to her advantage. She became what her mother had been.
A prostitute. A dirty, low, pathetic prostitute.
Naturally, her history affects Lacey's personality. Over the years she came more and more into herself, never forming real relationships with anyone. Of course, there was still her exterior. Her exterior is beautiful, witty, seductive, alluring. Her exterior was her mask. But behind that is a broken little girl who always had to care for herself.
A broken little girl who never had anyone to love.

My first thought was to make a flapper a la Daisy Fey. But then I thought about Percy Walker, and his novel that imagines how Lancelot would fit into the20th century—as a raving lunatic in 1970s New Orleans. Meg Cabot made her Lance into a football jock in a present-day Annapolis high school. So I must ask myself—what would Lancelot be in 1920s New York? A cop, of course.

Name: Lance Knightley
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Physical Appearance: Short dark hair, clean-shaven, and an adorable pair of brown eyes. He is tall, broad-shouldered and quite imposing—especially in his uniform, on mounted patrol, armed with his club and gun.
Profession: Policeman
Brief bio: Raised to be a pious Catholic, Lance has always aligned himself with the “good side”. His family has long been in law enforcement. His father was killed on the job, and now Lance still lives with his mother Helen, who’s extremely needy in her mental state. But he spends most of his time at the police station (or patrolling), and is good friends with police chief, Commissioner Artie King... as well as Artie’s wife, Jenny.

Name: “Mama” Millie May

Age: 36

Gender: Female

Physical Appearance: Image
Her wide, child bearing hips and curvaceous figure scream womanhood. She flaunts her full figure in form fitting, slinky, intricate cocktail gowns when working, but holds a much more modest appearance during the day. Her thick, black hair is always up, and her full, rounded face bears a friendly appearance and is always smiling.

Profession: Jazz singer in an underground speakeasy

Brief bio: Millie earned the nickname ‘Mama’ early on in life. She had her first child at fifteen, and had one every year till she was eighteen. Now, her three children are grown and have left, and Mama’s free to pursue her singing career. Her deep, soulful voice has earned her instant recognition in the speakeasy scene. She is a popular jazz performer, even breaking out among the white crowd with mild success. At night her life is all extravagance- heavy, beaded cocktail gowns, boozing, gambling and jazz. She’ll do anything to keep the speakeasy’s running and her profession upheld, including her occasional foray into bootlegging deals. During the day though, she’s the typical black woman of the time- just trying to get by like everyone else. She’s popular because of her kind, outgoing demeanor, and her friendly face draws strangers in.

Awesome! I love all the characters so far, we have quite the wide range! DoD, I love the fact that your pulling Sir Lancelot into the *more* modern day...that's so interesting!

I'm still waiting to hear from a couple of invited folks, but I would like to take this moment to give you all a chance to speak up on what you'd like to do as far as plot line. I'd like to make sure that we have a chance for everyone to take part in the major story...so what is it that you're all looking forward to? Should we have a renegade cop? A mass murderer who targets anyone and everyone regardless of status or legal orientation? Or a huge deal going down that everyone somehow gets tangled up in? Tell me what you're feeling into!

I like the last idea you had. Maybe the Muirenn family could be planning to open up a huge new speakeasy; something on a much bigger and more upmarket scale than most gin joints to try to attract new clientelle. But perhaps a rival gang doesn't like it, or maybe a new organisation on the scene sets out to sabotage it as a way to make it known that they mean business and they're aiming to be the top dog.
But I'm sure a few renegade cops and the odd psychopathic killer (perhaps working for the new gang?) could fit in nicely!

This is a new genre for me. So--I'm not sure what to suggest! Gang warfare? I was doing some research and I found out that the police force didn't really enforce prohibition (in fact, it was the IRS), and in New York, there was even a law that prevented cops from investigating bootlegging. Not to mention that a lot of cops were customers of the bootleggers. I still can't believe that the country even had the notion that making liquor illegal would make people stop drinking... Although I see where the reformers were coming from. I almost wanted to be a character like Carrie Nation!

Anyway, I think there may be potential in the idea of a mass murderer--maybe someone targeting flappers in particular. Since we have a lot of these loose young lady-types (maybe they have friends who get murdered). Otherwise, I will go with whatever comes up.

Postby Jadeling Hawkins on Sun Dec 14, 2008 11:45 pm

Excellent! We shall have a myriad of action type stuffs and junks going on...let's have some good old fashioned boot legging fun!

Sorry it took me so long to get the IC up and running, but I feel the length of the opening post...um, is long. Heh.

I tried to make it open enough for everyone to introduce themselves in whatever setting they feel necessary. If you're on the side of the law, you're probably in the police station. Or you could go in there, and talk with both Charlie and Lance. If you're on the opposite side of the law, perhaps you're in the speakeasy, and feel a need to go up and talk to Fiona Muirenn? If you're neutral, do whatever you please!

Also, I apologize if I was too hasty and assumed things about your character that you are not comfortable with. Like Fiona knowing Mama, or the fact that Mama works in the Gin Blossom, or the fact that Lance found one of the bodies...I can and will change any of those facts if it perturbs anyone. I'm a big advocate for anti-godmodding, so please let me know if I've crossed a line in attempting to pick us up at a quick pace.

Also, a note for those in the underground world: Though 'Lady Luck' is not a huge boss in and of herself, she does like to keep friends from all walks and in all corners. So it is not at all unlikely that your character will at least know of her, if not knowing her personally and being some sort of associate. So don't be afraid to assume. Just know that she's the sort of friend that's just as likely to loan you a hundred bucks (big money back then!) with an open-ended agreement as she is to fit your problem person with a pair of cement shoes if you've done her a favor as small as telling her an extra-amusing joke. ^^

Oh, and please forgive the cheesy intro...yikes.

The Life Noir IC

Also, we are still certainly accepting new characters. So if you know some talented writers that would be interested in jumping in, kindly direct them in this direction, eh? ;)

Walter Barrecks wrote:SO you want ol' fashion, original, unedited Remy? Before apple juice, handcuffs, or da beatin's? *Wink Wink* Cause I can do it, only slightly more words per post... *Will French luffles Jade* How did you get the name La Vie Noir, ma mignonette?

Walt! Mon amore! Yes, I so very much want Remy back! Wink wink indeed :D This game just wouldn't be the same without the Ragin' Cajun detective...^-^ And if you want to portray him before apple juice, handcuffs and beatin's, it is entirely acceptable to me :D It would be fun to see where things go with a fresh start...

And La Vie Noir? Well, I was thinking of Film Noir, which is sort of the feel we're going for here...only we're exploring the lives of these people, sooooo...you see where I'm going. No? Okay...

This is exciting! I don't mind you taking charge of the situation, Jadeling. What a way to jump into a story--my man Lance has found a dead doll! I want to reply, but I'm a little caught up in research--trying to figure out how a police department works exactly, and about all the forensics... Should I make up the details about what happened to the victim, or should it be more mysterious? Also, what part of New York City is this taking place, exactly? I have actually never been to the Big Apple, but I'd at least like to know how to describe the surroundings a little.

By the way, I loved your opening post, Jadeling. And Northern Soul--you've got major literary skill!

Edit: I've also decided to promote Lance from Officer to Sergeant, simply so he'll have a little bit more clout. Even though I think Officer Knightley sounds better than Sgt. Knightley. Oh well!

Name: Remy Bruyere :insert alias you think of here, after all, most of you in the mob are the ones makin' them up.
Age: 22? I forget at this point
Gender: Male
Physical Appearance: http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff139/WJB225/Remy.jpg
The Cajun dick has quite a rough time as a detective, leaving him with quite a few bullet holes spread across his body. His face is usually covered in stubble, rarely shaved. He wears various pin striped suits, be blue, green, or plain old black, each with a fedora, dress shoes, and a tie of the opposite color. His eyes switch from ranges of brown to ranges of green, based on emotion. His figure is tall, slim, and toned, muscular enough to beat on riff raff. His head is covered in short brown hair, which is usually messy and partly hidden by a fedora. Other than when he has the relaxed time with a bottle of booze and a woman, he looks like an insomniac.
Profession: Detective, possibly a vigilante?
Brief bio:Remy was born on the swamps from a somewhat large family, old enough to watch over his troublesome siblings, although he was as much as a hell raiser as them. He came up from the south to spread his Cajun knowledge with the big cities, after all, they had a crime problem. Remy is brilliant, and always figures out the case, however, he knows turning in the mob right off the bat would get him killed faster, so he helps the cops slowly catch the criminals of the streets. Due to several incidents in other areas, he has a strong dislike of Italian mobsters and their associates, one of these such cases involving the deaths of his uncle, aunt, and cousins.

(Hope it's not too late. Between finals and a lack of a computer I got a little swamped. My yolk is light now, however!)

Name: Dorothy Helen (Knutson) Byrd, nickname 'little bird' or 'birdie'

Age: 26

Gender: Female

Physical Appearance: Image

Profession: During the mornings Dorothy helps her brothers run a small produce stand, whose products are supplied by their parent's farm a short distance outside New York city. In the years after her loss, Dorothy has taken to her free spirited nature and pursues singing and dancing wherever she can find a gig; a flapper dancer of sorts.

Brief bio: Dorothy Knuston was raised in a farming family , the youngest of seven children. The farm consumed her family's time, struggling to make a living off their crops in a harsh economy. Her hard work to help support her family kept her from an education. In any spare time she had, Dorothy amused herself with songs and dances in the barn to popular songs of the time. Her parents scorned her energetic and bubbly personality, threatening that she would never make a suitable wife.

Time proved them wrong and at the age of seventeen, the year 1914, Dorothy was engaged and wed to Wayne J Byrd; the year the war started. Though she hated to leave the farm and her family and wanted desperately to be of aid to them, she longed to leave the farm life to pursue a better 'American Dream' in New York, New York. After nearly a year and a half of marriage, Dorothy found herself scared and alone as Wayne was drafted for the war. With several other temporarily widowed women, Dorothy found a job at a factor making and packing munitions in wartime support. As the war neared its end, a soldier approached Dorothy's door; her husband was dead.

A single woman in the cities, Dorothy found it impossible to provide for herself. Her brothers George and Clyde moved into the city with her, and together the three siblings started a produce stall selling their farms fresh produce to patrons seven days a week. Still mourning the loss of her husband, Dorothy has recently spent her evenings pursuing her childhood pleasures of singing and dancing.

Jadeling, I'm not sure if you want our detective and cop duo to go to the Gin Blossom. I just thought up an excuse for them to have some interactiion with the other characters. But if you want, that can happen later. Or now--whatever you decide. And I don't know if the brooch-as-entry-token is standard in 20s speakeasys. If not, I ripped it off of the introduction of Lackadaisy. That comic has amazing artwork. I looked at the gallery--gorgeous!

RolePlayGateway is a site built by a couple roleplayers who wanted to give a little something back to the roleplay community. The site has no intention of earning any profit, and is paid for out of their own pockets.

If you appreciate what they do, feel free to donate your spare change to help feed them on the weekends. After selecting the amount you want to donate from the menu, you can continue by clicking on PayPal logo.
