The Mary Sue Litmus Test ( )

Postby Jadeling Hawkins on Mon Dec 08, 2008 1:20 pm

Hello my friends!

So, you have created yourself a character. A wonderful, awe-inspiring character. The hero! Or perhaps even the villain! But were you being original?

We have here a little litmus test. All you have to do is answer the questions (honestly!) all the way to the bottom and then hit that magic button. It's an amusing ride, and can let you know if you're being too cliche...it's more honest than your friends will be!

The Mary Sue Litmus Test

Don't be afraid! If nothing else, you'll get a hint about where you need to improve! And I, too, have taken this test...I took it with my 1920's Irish mobster, Fiona Muirenn. I'll have you know I scored:

22: Your character is cutting it close, and you may want to work on the details a bit, but you're well on your way to having a lovely original character. Good work.

Looks like I have a bit of work to do...but now I know!

So go on, my little writerly friends, take the test and don't be afraid to post your results!

Alright, I decided to take this using two of my characters from two different RPs, and this is what I got;;

Arianna Winter [Cruel World];;

19: The Non-Sue. Your character is a well-developed, balanced person, and is almost certainly not a Mary Sue. Congratulations!

Grace Stanley [Teenage Dirtbag];;

25: Borderline-Sue. Your character is cutting it close, and you may want to work on the details a bit, but you're well on your way to having a lovely original character. Good work.

Hmm ... I'm gonna have to work on Grace a bit.

Aha, that was fun =D

I really am not so impressed with this test. It says itself at the very end that it isn't realiable. And how does being named "Hunter" make you a Mary-Sue?!

Anyway, Ernest Wilkes the elven Alchemist got 39 points. I'll have to work on him a bit.

I actually love this test. I merely says at the end that it's reliably depends directly on you. If you grade yourself harshly (by checking things that are maybe when you are grading) you will see your high score. If you don't grade yourself harshly, your not going to help yourself with Mary Sue'ing.

I think this test is excellent to opening the eyes for people, showing that your character is too much for others to look at. (Rolling there eyes is one.) I think the author of Twilight should check this out. Yes, I went there. :)

This test shouldn't be taken literally, it just helps to know when your getting to overboard.

I think the Hunter refers to it being over used? (Omg, bounty hunter, pew pew?) Really it could be replaced by anything. Like labeling your character, lets give an example, 'emo' while making the character is bad writing. You should describe what they wear, and let the audience decide.

My record for a character I made was a mute girl, who had phobias to blood and men, and no powers. I got a -3 on the test. xD

The test I took was: http://www.springhole.net/quizzes/marysue.htm

I think it is much better.

Well I took the test Jade, using that same character. Got a 4. xD (And I was being hard on her. X,X) The test is asking me why I took it. xD
Meh.

Your Mary Sue Score: 15

I may have to repeat that again, it's lower than I expected.

Funny how a lot of these questions are parts that can't be helped by my character Karasu, seeing as they're parts of his species... Like markings... :P He got 18, which I found funny- I assumed he'd get lower. :P (note, on Ponats' test)

Hmm I got 25. Still needs some improvement. :D

22-29
Some definite Sue-like tendancies here. A little polishing might be in order to put original fiction and RPG characters back into the balance, especially if Kirking is involved. Fanfiction characters should probably have some work done.
Lectures have started so can't reply as much!!!

Speaking of Twilight, here are the results:

Isabella "Bella" Swan: 63, Über-Sue. You've got one hell of a Mary-Sue on your hands here, and it's not going to be easy to set things right. But do your best. There may be hope for you yet. (Has no excuse.)

Edward Cullen: 65, Über-Sue. You've got one hell of a Mary-Sue on your hands here, and it's not going to be easy to set things right. But do your best. There may be hope for you yet. Potentially 66, depending on if his powers would truly be considered normal (i.e. what perspective you have.)

Jacob Black: 18, The Non-Sue. Your character is a well-developed, balanced person, and is almost certainly not a Mary Sue. Congratulations! Mostly because he's the loser in the love triangle, and werewolves didn't come up.

Stephenie Meyer would probably throw another tempertantrum if she weren't so busy wangsting about her weight right now.

Okay, I'll shut up before I get really flame-baity and insult Edward.

______________________

EDIT: Finished my characters. :D :D All of the results could be considered 4 points higher, if necessary, since I'm thinking of starting journals since I just realized I don't really know most of them. -is ashamed-

Borderline-Sue. Your character is cutting it close, and you may want to work on the details a bit, but you're well on your way to having a lovely original character. Good work. (26, Ellen, )

The Anti-Sue. Your character is the very antithesis of a Mary-Sue. Why are you even taking this test? (5, Linda)

The Non-Sue. Your character is a well-developed, balanced person, and is almost certainly not a Mary Sue. Congratulations! (13, Tamara; 12, Kagura)

Tam's could also be considered higher since I just recently broke her arm, on a whim. I don't think most of my characters would want to befriend me. :o

D:<
I took it a couple times... Got Anti-Sue for most of them and Non-Sue for others... But the truth of the matter, I don't really know my characters well, accept for the select few that have been around for a long time. ShameShame on me <|3

Gonna make some char journals.... And retake that... By the way;; that's really really cool! :D

I didn't even know they had such a thing. Haha. I'm gonna start taking it each time I make a new "in depth" character ^_^;;

Danke.
