The Mortal Empires: Chapter 1 (OOC) ( )

Postby Village Alchemist on Sun Jan 04, 2009 6:40 am

Fifty-two years ago, the continent of Orom, in the world of Letalium, was quite evenly divided. In the north lay the Kingdom Northreach, an ancient civilization of advanced culture and technology, home of the proud Rakhmeti race. In the south, the "Southern Regions," various petty tribes were locked in a constant battle for control over land, hunting rights, slaves, and wealth.

At the time, Northreach itself was in decline. The king, Fero et Rolfe, was proving to be an incompetent leader. Northreach's economy was decaying, and the people were growing unruly.

A secret alliance of Rakhmeti noblemen came together, led by a man named Duke Solidir. They conspired to have King Fero and his entire family assassinated, and succeeded.

With the king gone no heirs available, the kingdom was on the brink of chaos. The official church, the Temple of Rakhmet, did their best to maintain order, but very few people knew who was behind the regicide; paranoia and unrest swept through Northreach.

The traitorous noblemen's plan was simple. They would step in when the unrest was nearing its peak, and save Northreach from collapse. Since know-one but themselves knew they were behind the royal family's deaths, they would be hailed as heros and allowed to rule Northreach together.

A couple of weeks after the assassination, the conspirators met to discuss the details of their plan. All but one: Solidir was nowhere to be seen.

When the conspirators were all together, assassins hired by Solidir attacked and killed them. Solidir then gathered up his own duchy's milita (the largest fighting force in the land, except for the Royal Army itself) and demanded that the Temple of Rakhmet name him king. Any other nobles who sought the position would have to answer to his milita.

The Temple, fearing outright revolt by the lower-classes, hastily agreed, still not knowing that Solidir himself had been behind King Fero's death.

Suprisingly, the cunning Solidir turned out to be an efficient and skilled ruler. For both the lower and higher classes, quality of life in Northreach improved during the first few years of his rule.

Then began the troubles. No-one knows how or why, but Solidir came to possess a powerful artifact called the Lunar Sceptre. Rumor had it that the sceptre had been crafted in ancient times by Keth, the king of the evil Night Gods.

The Lunar Sceptre was an immensly powerful weapon, granting King Solidir near-godlike magical skills. With it, he led the Royal Army in person in an invasion of the Southern Regions.

The southern tribes quickly fell before the army of Northreach and the power of the Lunar Sceptre. Soon, nearly all the continent was under Solidir's--now "Emperor Solidir's"--control.

Gradually, however, the undivine strength of the Lunar Sceptre began to weeken Solidir's will. Through the artifact, the Night God Keth whispered evil thoughts into the emperor's head. The man who now called himself Moon Emperor of Orom was twisted by Keth's perverse designs. He began a campaign of torture and murder against the people of Orom.

The Royal Army, seeing Solidir's corruption, tried to turn on him and overthrow him. Even that mighty fighting force, however, was no match for the Lunar Sceptre. Solidir destroyed the entire army, and with a dark spell raised them all as undead abominations he named the Lunans.

The Lunans were dreadful beings who knew only rape and murder. Moon Emperor Solidir set them loose upon the world and made no attempt to govern them. For six years, the Lunans terrorized the hapless people of Orom.

Then, a lunar eclipse occured. The moon was the power scource for the Lunar Sceptre, and without it shining upon the earth Solidir lost his magic. A secret rebel group had prepared for this, and took the opprotunity to launch an attack on Solidir's palace and kill the Moon Emperor.

The rebels were led by Shamad et Rolfe, a man who claimed to be an heir of the murdered King Feros. He personally slew Solidir, and declared himself king.

He rebuilt the Royal Army and drove all the Lunans from Northreach. However, without the Lunar Sceptre (which had been lost in the battle), he could not keep Northreach's new vast empire intact. He would be king of Northreach, but no more.

Meanwhile, the fate of the Lunar Sceptre remains unknown.

And in the Southern Regions, the Lunans still roam freely, sowing sorrow upon whatever village they decide to ravage. But now, without Emperor Solidir around, the southern tribes may have a chance to fight back, reclaim their homeland, and build a new civilization from the ashes of the South.

This is a time for warriors and for leaders. The destiny of the Southern Regions will be determined in the next few months. What mark will you leave on history?

He is almost always armored in light of the recent events. He wears plated armor over a leather vest, although he can not carry much else on his own because of the weight of the armor itself.
Equipment: plated armor, a steel longsword
Skills: A natural leader and an adept swordsman
Bio': He was born in the southern lands and has remained there his entire life, at an early age his town was destroyed by lunans but he and his father managed to escape to Eriva the largest surviving city in the southern lands. He was forced to fight at an early age in the many Lunan attacks and showed a great talent for swordsmanship. He was inducted into the Eriva Guard and quickly rose ranks. In a recent attack his commanding officer was killed not by lunans but by groups of bandits that use the chaos the lunans have caused to their advantage. He is now commander of what is left of the Eriva Guard and milita. He and the entire town have had no contact with the northern lands for years.

Name: Mikhail.
Age: 36.
Gender: Male.
Appearance: Mikhail is considerably tall and slender, almost to the point of flat-out physical awkwardness. His face is scarred lightly, the most notable being a small gash at the uppermost point of the bridge of his nose. His eyes are gray and dull, hiding any possibly perceived emotion, the majority of the time. His movements are slow and calculated, providing a clear contrast to his lanky appearance.
Equipment: Simple, brown peasant's clothing, and a few vials of Wardorizn.
Skills: Mikhail is an adept wielder of Material Magic.
Bio: Mikhail was born in the Kingdom Northreach. He was born to an impoverished family, particularly so given the strife of the time, as Solidir slowly grew mad. Mikhail had always wanted to be a magician, though, that dream seemed to be dying as he grew older. Eventually, he "ran away" from home. Not because he was upset or angry with his family, but because he couldn't stand the lifestyle they'd been forced into. He seemed to experience little feelings towards leaving everything he'd known behind in his early teen years. He continued to pursue what seemed to be, at the time, a foolish dream, of learning to wield and control magic. However, after a few years' worth of odd-jobs and petty thefts, he'd managed to obtain some Wardorizn. He experimented with the drug for months, gaining small magical powers and immediately becoming addicted -- to both the drug and the power. One of Solidir's men realized the potential Mikhail had, and hired the young magician to help keep Solidir's grip across the world tight. Mikhail was paid in Wardorizn, and became more and more powerful. However, as Solidir began to conquer more; and become delusional, Mikhail feared for his safety. The magician fled to the Southern Regions, where he began harvesting and refining his own Wardorizn; devoting his entire life to the study of magic. As time went by, and Solidir was overthrown, Mikhail realized how much destruction he had been responsible for in his lifetime, and began to consider acting out on behalf of 'good'.

Oakash, welcome to the RP.

Comrade Vacilli, I'd appreciate it if you would go into a bit more detail. How did Shade get amnesia, how long ago was that, and what has she been doing since then?

How is it that wolfish magic revolves around water? And what does that entail?

The tribe lives with the animal their magick is supposed to mimick, and the water magick is just the characters element. And as far as the magick goes all it really allows him to do is as long as there is a source of water near-by he can munipulate it, but his tribe forbides using element magick as a weapon.

Hmm...I guess that's okay, as long as you can give some explanation as to how he got the water magic. I understand the wolf thing, because it's a tradition of his tribe that he would have been raised to be able to do, but how did he end up with water magic?

When he was a child he went to play by himself near a river not too far off from his village. While he was hopping around on the stones he slipped and fell into the water and was dragged out by the current. A ways down the river the current lessened and a wolf saved him, or so say the passer-bys that found him. And so when it came time for him to choose what his beastial magick would mimic, he choose the wolves.

I had wanted him to have water magick because of his drowning, and so the two would be tied with his past. But I guess we could say that the wolves have water magick.

How does almost drowning give you water magic? I almost drowed once. I didn't get no special powers from it. I just got pain and wetness.

Dang it, now you've made me jealous!

Er....anyway....

I would really prefer if he just had one sort of magic.
