The Role Playing Survey ( )

Postby Syren Song on Sun Sep 14, 2008 11:59 am

Let's all get to know one another better in terms of role playing! (This could also be a helpful tool in finding other people who have similar backgrounds, styles, and interests as you.) Simply copy and fill out the survey below about your experiences role playing! :]

*Please note: All questions below refer to text-based role playing only. Do not answer them in terms of your experiences with any other type (ie. tabletop, LARPing, etc.). The purpose of this is to relate it to this message board.

1.) How old are you?
21

2.) How old were you when you first started role playing?
13

3.) What website did you first start role playing at and what other sites have your role played at since then?
I believe the first place I started role playing was at http://www.neopets.com. I've been to so many other role playing sites though (including a few of my own that I made), that I just can't remember them all. These two are the real major ones: http://www.lilymud.net and http://www.bb.surrealtwilight.com

4.) What used to be your favorite types of role plays when you first started out?
I did quite a lot of animal role plays, such as Neopets or The Lion King. I also role played as wolves or dragons or dinosaurs. I actually didn't start role playing as people for awhile.

5.) What are your favorite types of role plays now?
I prefer to role play as humans (or humanoids) now, ironically enough. I love science fiction or futuristic role plays, as well as modern day ones. I really can't get into medieval, fantasy-based settings. I tend to drift away from fantasy any more and more toward realistic story lines. I also like survival horror and action/adventure.

6.) How would you best describe your role playing style to someone who wanted to know?
I would describe my style as being detailed, long, and descriptive. I like to write my role plays as if they were the pages of a book. I try to always strive for excellence. After so many years of writing (I even began writing "books" when I was in the first grade), I've grown in my talents and so I expect the same amount of effort which I put into a role play to be given back by the other players. When it comes to battle role plays or fights within any given role play, my style is very realistic. I am not immature and looking solely to win, but rather to better the role play story itself by telling it in a more realistic fashion. I'd rather have weaker characters physically than demi-gods, as, to me, their flaws and humanistic qualities are much more entertaining to role play than someone who is near perfect. I am very down-to-earth in that respect.

7.) What are your strong suits in role playing/what are you best at?
I believe I am an overall above-par writer. Now, I would say that I am just average, but from everything that I've observed over all these many long years, and only finding one role player I can name whom I considered to be excellent, I've been led to believe that my own talents aren't the general standard. I think my strongest suit is either my grammar or my inclusion of detail.

8.) What are you worst at/need to improve when it comes to role playing?
I would very much like to be able to become more devoted to my role plays, but I tend to loose interest quick if the other people involved aren't putting forth much effort. I also wish I had an even larger vocabulary. I often have word brain-farts and cannot think of the appropriate word to use in some occasions, which is frustrating.

9.) Do you have any (big or small) role playing accomplishments?
I have never once, in the past 8 years, had a role play that was finished, sadly, but I have risen up in status on a few message boards. I first became an OOC Moderator at Surreal*Twilight, and then was promoted to a Global Moderator of the message board. I also was an Administrator of some of my own forums, my latest being my mythological role playing message board of the modern era, EthereaLights (see signature for link).

10.) What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to other role players?
Lack of interest resulting in poor quality posts is probably one of the biggest pet peeves of mine, in addition to bad grammar or simply a poor understanding of the English language in terms of writing. (Of course, if you are not from this country, I completely understand how it would be quite difficult to perfect your writing skills, but I was simply referring to those who do speak English as a first language.) It never ceases to astonish me how people cannot form proper sentences. I even have a hard time understanding some people and what exactly they're trying to get across because they just can't write.

11.) Do prefer role plays that progress slowly or ones that move along at a steady, fast pace?
I suppose I prefer role plays that move somewhere in between those two extremes.

12.) What type of role plays would you never do?
I would never do a sex-driven role play or most any anime kind. I also shy away from romance too, as I am in a serious relationship and do not need to be involved in a romance role play with someone else.

13.) Do prefer to type out long, detailed replies to your role plays, medium-length replies, or short ones?
I most definitely prefer long, detailed posts, so long as I am interested in a role play. If I grow less interested in it, it shows in the length of my replies.

14.) What is one type of role play you want to do someday?
I'd really like to do another ghost role play. I have done only one which involved 3 other people, all of whom were, for lack of a kinder word, horrible at role playing. It died almost immediately, but I was so into it, that my posts remained long and detailed up until the bitter end.

15.) What time of day do you tend to write best?
I think I write my best at some point during the afternoon, though not immediately after eating lunch, as I tend to feel tired. So, I either write best just before lunch or in the late afternoon just before dinner.

Re: The Role Playing Survey ( )

Postby Leila Aarons on Sun Sep 14, 2008 12:14 pm

1.) How old are you?
15

2.) How old were you when you first started role playing?
10

3.) What website did you first start role playing at and what other sites have your role played at since then?
Started at Neopets, I've also roleplayed on other forums. They're small ones, though, so I don't feel I need to mention the names.

4.) What used to be your favorite types of role plays when you first started out?
Medieval fantasy.

5.) What are your favorite types of role plays now?
Realistic mostly, some fantasy. I enjoy vampire roleplays, sometimes I still do some medieval ones. It really depends on the roleplay and my mood, I'm pretty open.

6.) How would you best describe your role playing style to someone who wanted to know?
Well...I never do one liners. Never. I try to write in a style that's fun to read, not write to make it look all good or fancy. Descriptive words are great and all, but if you use too many, it, in my opinion, just gets way too long to read, and it isn't fun.

7.) What are your strong suits in role playing/what are you best at?
I'm not really sure, but I guess it would be being able to come up with a lot of ideas to keep the plot moving. I'm usually pretty good at thinking up ideas.

8.) What are you worst at/need to improve when it comes to role playing?
Well, I could definitely use to get a broader vocabulary and work on my writing some. Though I don't think I'm bad at writing, I know I can do better.

9.) Do you have any (big or small) role playing accomplishments? (ie. finished a role play, was voted legendary somewhere, etc.)
Not really. I've managed a few of my own forums, but they never really got big or anything.

10.) What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to other role players?
ONE LINERS! I just can't stand one liners. Maybe once in a very great while it's okay, I understand writer's block, but even when I get writer's block I am almost always able to put at least three sentences. Plus, one liners are really hard to reply to, especially if they happen all the time.

11.) Do prefer role plays that progress slowly or ones that move along at a steady, fast pace?
I like roleplays to move at a good pace. It doesn't have to be extremely fast, but I don't like it to be slow. It just gets boring that way.

12.) What type of role plays would you never do?
I don't know if there's any I wouldn't.

13.) Do prefer to type out long, detailed replies to your role plays, medium-length replies, or short ones?
Well, it depends on what I'm replying to. I often do at least a paragraph, though--five sentences. Sometimes it's just three if I'm having some writer's block or if I'm replying to a really short post. But it's never less than three sentences.

14.) What is one type of role play you want to do someday?
Um...I don't know. I've pretty much done all the types I really wanted to. But I would like to do perhaps a TeacherxStudent or a KidnapperxVictim roleplay. I'm a sucker for romance, though the roleplay has to have more than just that, naturally, or it isn't as fun.

15.) What time of day do you tend to write best?
Anytime of day, really. But I guess afternoon is my best.

1.) How old are you?
15

2.) How old were you when you first started role playing?
15

3.) What website did you first start role playing at and what other sites have your role played at since then?
I started at Gaia, but then moved to RPG. Been here ever since.

4.) What used to be your favorite types of role plays when you first started out?
Fantasy/Sci-Fi

5.) What are your favorite types of role plays now?
Sci-Fi, Medieval Fantasy, and Pirate

6.) How would you best describe your role playing style to someone who wanted to know?
I'm not the best, but I'm constantly working on my skills, improving them and making myself a better RPer. I don't roleplay in First-Person. Rather, I tell my character's story through Third-Person. I can sometimes write a lot, and sometimes...not so much. But I do try to get the point across, and then some.

7.) What are your strong suits in role playing/what are you best at?
I don't know, really. I'm not really better at anything, rather I'm pretty much the same in all of my skills.

8.) What are you worst at/need to improve when it comes to role playing?
I need to work on making longer, more detailed posts. I also need to practice giving my character a sense of realism, that is, giving them dynamic emotions, real thoughts, and more human interactions.

9.) Do you have any (big or small) role playing accomplishments? (ie. finished a role play, was voted legendary somewhere, etc.)
Not particularly, no.

10.) What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to other role players?
Grammar. I HATE bad spellers, people who don't capitalize ANYTHING, etc. etc. I can deal with a few errors here and there, but that's about it. I also do not like the "Emo" kind of character, where everything that could have gone bad in their life did, and they cry constantly, cut themselves, whatever. I might be offending some people here, and I'm sorry, but I just cannot stand that type of character.

11.) Do prefer role plays that progress slowly or ones that move along at a steady, fast pace?
I don't really have a preference. As long as it has substance, I'm down for it.

12.) What type of role plays would you never do?
High School. I tried once. Never again.

13.) Do prefer to type out long, detailed replies to your role plays, medium-length replies, or short ones?
I prefer to type whatever is necessary to get my point across, with some added detail. Though, sometimes, I leave myself with a sense that I could have done more. I'm currently working on that.

14.) What is one type of role play you want to do someday?
I don't know. There are so many I would like to do, I just can't pick a favorite. :P

15.) What time of day do you tend to write best?
Anytime, as long as I'm interested.

Re: The Role Playing Survey ( )

Postby St.Jimmy on Sun Sep 14, 2008 1:04 pm

1.) How old are you?
15
2.) How old were you when you first started role playing?
13, although I've been writing since I was very small.
3.) What website did you first start role playing at and what other sites have your role played at since then?
Writers' Window and this site are the only websites I've ever written on.
4.) What used to be your favorite types of role plays when you first started out?
Anything, really. I used to prefer fantasy types of roleplay - being demons or angels and things like that. I've always had a weakness for being the underdog in roleplays, but in the past this was mainly centred around fantasy.
5.) What are your favorite types of role plays now?
Now, I prefer more realistic types. I've started to enjoy roleplaying as bullies - not because I am one or want to be one, but because I find it an interesting change from my usual characters, who are the victims or the underside of life struggling to get by. However, I must admit that most of my characters probably still are considered the disadvantaged ones or the underdogs.
6.) How would you best describe your role playing style to someone who wanted to know?
I don't really know. I would probably say that I'm stronger at character speech than description, which tends to be the opposite when I'm writing stories. I try to make my posts as detailed as possible but I think my style focusses mainly on character rather than the background.
7.) What are your strong suits in role playing/what are you best at?
I'm best at character development and speech. I think I can capture the personality very well, and make what they say suit the character. I enjoy introducing subtle changes to the character over the course of the roleplay as their environment or the events around them gradually change their beliefs or the way they behave.
8.) What are you worst at/need to improve when it comes to role playing?
I need to improve my levels of description, certainly. I can do this easily enough in stories, but in roleplays I tend to sway more towards the speech aspect. I can describe things in roleplays but I end up forgetting to keep up a continuous flow of description and it becomes more just my characters talking.
9.) Do you have any (big or small) role playing accomplishments? (ie. finished a role play, was voted legendary somewhere, etc.)
I don't necessarily look for awards or achievements when I'm writing - I do it because I enjoy it and I've been writing for my whole life. I have finished several roleplays on Writers' Window, and started several there and on this site. I think my biggest achievement is simply the way I have improved from when I started, in both the maturity and development of my writing and the gradually increasing complexity of the characters that I create.
10.) What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to other role players?
I hate it when people make one-line posts or posts that have no detail whatsoever. Incorrect grammar and spelling also annoys me - I know that no one is perfect and I make mistakes myself, but it's the complete lack of effort I see in some writers that irritates me.
11.) Do prefer role plays that progress slowly or ones that move along at a steady, fast pace?
I don't like a roleplay to inch along in the same place for days and days, but at the same time I hate it when they speed through extremely fast and you can't keep up. I tend to sway more towards the fast-moving sort, although ideally I prefer a pace that is neither too fast or too slow but is instead just right. This, of course, tends to be impossible, especially as I'm in a different time zone to a lot of different writers on here.
12.) What type of role plays would you never do?
Probably explicit romance ones. This makes me uncomfortable because I don't think I would have the experience to do these tactfully.
13.) Do prefer to type out long, detailed replies to your role plays, medium-length replies, or short ones?
I prefer to write replies that are as long as I can. I hate it when people post one sentence replies and I really do try to at least make 75 words each time. Obviously, this can be impossible sometimes, but I usually manage to make at least 75 words and usually more.
14.) What is one type of role play you want to do someday?
I don't know, to be honest. I'm constantly looking for new ideas and original roleplays to write in, and my preference changes a lot. I think I would like to try out some kind of supernatural roleplay at some point - I was in one recently which died quickly, although I did enjoy it. Mostly, however, I'm very happy with the roleplays I'm doing at the moment.
15.) What time of day do you tend to write best?
Probably in the evening, although I do write throughout the day. However, writing is a relief for me at the end of a long day, so this tends to be why my posts are probably better closer to the night.

1.) How old are you?
I am fourteen years old.

2.) How old were you when you first started role playing?
Thirteen.

3.) What website did you first start role playing at and what other sites have your role played at since then? I first started role playing on Runescape, then Neopets, and now this.

4.) What used to be your favorite types of role plays when you first started out?
Um.. Probably role plays around war, fantasy, or highschool.

5.) What are your favorite types of role plays now?
ANYTHING inventive, or that captures my imagination in some way, I usually have a character in mind so if the roleplay looks like it'll fit with them, I'll go on it. I do prefer role plays with a little 'depth' though.

6.) How would you best describe your role playing style to someone who wanted to know?
I would say, that it's simplistic, and yet, detailed. I don't think I make many mistakes punctuation-wise but I don't always post novels.

7.) What are your strong suits in role playing/what are you best at?
I'm not sure... I'd say I'm best at introducing one of my characters, although I have a tendency to get bored and diminish the quality of my posts.

8.) What are you worst at/need to improve when it comes to role playing?
I don't interact enough with the other roleplayers, and get terrible writer's block.

9.) Do you have any (big or small) role playing accomplishments? (ie. finished a role play, was voted legendary somewhere, etc.)
Nope. And now your making me sad..

10.) What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to other role players?
People who create perfect characters, can't spell, expect everyone to feel sorry for them, and don't make an effort to stay active.

11.) Do prefer role plays that progress slowly or ones that move along at a steady, fast pace?
Ones that move at a steady, fast pace. I get frustrated at slowness.

12.) What type of role plays would you never do?
Dull ones with little plot that center around flawless characters.

13.) Do prefer to type out long, detailed replies to your role plays, medium-length replies, or short ones? It depends on how I'm feeling and what the other role players are contributing.

14.) What is one type of role play you want to do someday?
Something with an amazing, but not overly complicated plot, that I can immerse myself, and my character in!

15.) What time of day do you tend to write best?
Mid-day.

1.) How old are you?
17 years.

2.) How old were you when you first started role playing?
Somewhere around 12 or 13.

3.) What website did you first start role playing at and what other sites have your role played at since then?
My first RPing experiences were at warboards.org, along with very short stints in neopets.com and onemanga.com. The majority of my RPing days have been spent here.

4.) What used to be your favorite types of role plays when you first started out?
I'd be open for pretty much anything in those days, as I hadn't really found my niche yet.

5.) What are your favorite types of role plays now?
I tend to lean towards futuristic RPs now, or anything with technology involved.

6.) How would you best describe your role playing style to someone who wanted to know?
My style is focused on the character's action and movements, and making things happen. I also like to throw in twists whenever possible.

7.) What are your strong suits in role playing/what are you best at?
I never settle for an inadequate post, and I'm always looking to expand my character's development and whatnot.

8.) What are you worst at/need to improve when it comes to role playing?
Consistency in quality (I've written super-descriptive long posts before, but very rarely), as well as being open to more RPing formats.

9.) Do you have any (big or small) role playing accomplishments? (ie. finished a role play, was voted legendary somewhere, etc.)
Not particularly.

10.) What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to other role players?
Stereotypical/overdone/Mary Sue characters, as well as a lack of effort in terms of punctuation, capitalization and grammar. Seriously, is it that hard?

11.) Do prefer role plays that progress slowly or ones that move along at a steady, fast pace?
I feel somewhat inclined towards the latter.

12.) What type of role plays would you never do?
Animal RPs. RPs where all the characters have animal companions is fair enough, but RPs as the animals themselves? Not my thing.

13.) Do prefer to type out long, detailed replies to your role plays, medium-length replies, or short ones?
My posts are generally medium-length, though I sometimes crank out a nice long one.

14.) What is one type of role play you want to do someday?
One that involves traversing through time (in a technological manner, preferably).

15.) What time of day do you tend to write best?
Completely random.

Re: The Role Playing Survey ( )

Postby The Rogue Doll on Sun Sep 14, 2008 10:39 pm

1.) How old are you?
I am twenty-one.

2.) How old were you when you first started role playing?
I was...uh....younger? Junior High...no, elementary, I don't know.

3.) What website did you first start role playing at and what other sites have your role played at since then?
Well, you said not to mention other types, just text base. I never used to own a computer. My sister and I used to role play in notebooks, writing back and forth to each other. When I started online it was in chats and then on a site whos name I forgot (only ever played with a guy named Jurgen because the site sucked so bad. I remembered the guy, not the site. I only went to links he sent me). Then I went to Gaia, got sick of their shite and came here.

4.) What used to be your favorite types of role plays when you first started out?
I did mostly fan rps because I was nervous about knowing the story well enough to play. I played a lot of Vampire games when I became more comfortable, then I played an apocalyptic one for about a year.

5.) What are your favorite types of role plays now?
Anything that challenges the mind and storytelling and psychological abilities.

6.) How would you best describe your role playing style to someone who wanted to know?
I like to take the side that is needed for the story, to either balance or unbalance the party, based on need. I like to make people think about what they are doing and why, which usually causes me to play psychotic characters.

7.) What are your strong suits in role playing/what are you best at?
I am very good at being inside the character's head. What would this person actually do in this given situation?

8.) What are you worst at/need to improve when it comes to role playing?
Memory. I am constantly having to go back and read and reread things that have already been said in order to not post like an idiot. It was a big problem for me in chat room role plays because I kept forgetting what just happened!

9.) Do you have any (big or small) role playing accomplishments? (ie. finished a role play, was voted legendary somewhere, etc.)
I once played more than ten characters at one time to keep a role play going that I desperately wanted to finish. I don't know if that's an accomplishment, but it sure felt like one.

10.) What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to other role players?
People who do not even read what the last person said before posting. People who only skim and therefore MISS THINGS. *shudders* The room explodes around them and they are just sitting there sipping coffee, or talking to someone who left.

11.) Do prefer role plays that progress slowly or ones that move along at a steady, fast pace?
Definitely a steady pace. My brain runs in circles really really fast and I usually check a role play at least twelve times when I am online, even though I know no one is going to have posted, because I can't leave it alone until I have checked.

12.) What type of role plays would you never do?
There is very little that I would never do. I most likely wont do a fanfiction role play based on a book or whatever that I have not seen/read. There are too many important things I could have missed. I also wont do role plays that have a lot of errors in the opening post.

13.) Do prefer to type out long, detailed replies to your role plays, medium-length replies, or short ones?
The first. I thrive on detail. I love to be challenged to improve myself and my writing capabilities.

14.) What is one type of role play you want to do someday?
I don't care what kind, I just want to do one where every character is interesting and played by an extremely skilled and creative storyteller.

15.) What time of day do you tend to write best?
Any time between Twelve a.m. and Twelve a.m.
The apple falls far from the tree
she's rotten and so beautiful
I'd like to keep her here with me
and tell her that she's beautiful
She takes the pills to fall asleep
and dreams that she's invisible
Too many dreams she stays awake
recalls when she was capable...

Re: The Role Playing Survey ( )

Postby SaveYou on Mon Sep 15, 2008 11:14 am

1.) How old are you?
13

2.) How old were you when you first started role playing?
11

3.) What website did you first start role playing at and what other sites have your role played at since then?
I didn't RP at any sites before Gateway, really, I had a friend then (who moved >>) and he first started it with me. I started my Seven Deadly Sins RP at another site, but I lost the address, and can't remember my account details for it anymore, so feck. But RPGateway really has all the RP's I like, so I don't have to go to a different site x3

4.) What used to be your favorite types of role plays when you first started out?
When I first started out, me and the aforementioned friend used to do RP's based on all the horror movies we'd seen (Halloween, Dawn Of The Dead and Nightmare On Elm Street were our favourites), but we started to move on from them to realistic RP's.

5.) What are your favorite types of role plays now?
Probably realistic, although I can occassionally do fantasy when I put my mind to it. I like fan-based ones as well, though I mostly lurk in Realistic Roleplay and Everything Else

6.) How would you best describe your role playing style to someone who wanted to know?
I have no idea xD

7.) What are your strong suits in role playing/what are you best at?
Probably creating stories. I swear to God, I've made so many damn RP's on this site that I've lost the bloody count >> I've still got more ideas! But most of my ideas come from the music I listen to, and that's where some of my characters come from too.

8.) What are you worst at/need to improve when it comes to role playing?
Description and post length. I try to make my posts as good as I can, but sometimes my mind just draws a blank and I post a really crappy one >> As for description, I can usually do that for the first few posts, then I sort of lose focus on it, making the aforementioned crappy posts. But I'm working on this in the RPAcademy, so hopefully I should improve soon.

9.) Do you have any (big or small) role playing accomplishments? (ie. finished a role play, was voted legendary somewhere, etc.)
No, don't think so. Don't really care. I RP for the fun of RPing, and that's it.

10.) What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to other role players?
Illiteracy and one-liners. I'm guilty of the one-liners myself, but I try not to post them. As for illiteracy, I tend to blank out the people who tAlK lYk DiS, can't spell, or just don't try in the RP. And Godmodders. If I see Godmodding, I want to chase the person who's done it with an electric chainsaw (I have anger management problems..)

11.) Do prefer role plays that progress slowly or ones that move along at a steady, fast pace?
I like fast RP's, but it's hard for to keep up with them because I live in Northern Ireland, so I'll join a fast RP on a Sunday or something, RP it all day, go to school the next day and come back to find my character has been left in the dust. So I'd say steady RP's, but not slow ones. I'm too impatient for those ones.

12.) What type of role plays would you never do?
Explicit romance RP's, and RP's where your an animal. I tried the latter once, and found no fun in it. I tend the avoid the former like the plauge. I'm too young for that stuff

13.) Do prefer to type out long, detailed replies to your role plays, medium-length replies, or short ones?
I can try to type out the long ones, but I've got very few like that. Mostly because everytime I try, I lose the damn things! I stick to medium length mostly, though I can dip into short replies too, though I try not to.

14.) What is one type of role play you want to do someday?
Most likely the next idea I have. Once I get an idea, I get very keen to do it, and I'm usually willing to try everything once, except for the explicit romance ones and animal ones.

15.) What time of day do you tend to write best?
When I've just woken up, strangely enough. I think it's because writing earlier in the morning wakes me up more, and actually gets my creative juices flowing. Most weekends I wake up, switch on the computer, then vary between RPGateway and the book I'm writing.

Re: The Role Playing Survey ( )

Postby Morning Star on Tue Sep 16, 2008 5:30 pm

1.) How old are you? 14

2.) How old were you when you first started role playing? 8 (offline, used paper figure cutouts and stat sheets), 12 (D&D), 14 (online, forums)

3.) What website did you first start role playing at and what other sites have your role played at since then?
Here. Skiffy.

4.) What used to be your favorite types of role plays when you first started out?
Fantasy. Pokemon FTW!

5.) What are your favorite types of role plays now?
Fantasy. RPs with alternate races (elves, dragons, vampires, were-things, etc.)

6.) How would you best describe your role playing style to someone who wanted to know?
Quite random. Most of my characters are questionable. (for those involved in the "Tori incident"...)

7.) What are your strong suits in role playing/what are you best at?
Crazy characters who never follow the rules. Most are not considered to be within the normal population... All have a bunch of secrets no one will ever figure out. (Tori...)

8.) What are you worst at/need to improve when it comes to role playing?
Grammer and sentece structure. I also tend to get involved with character-to-character conversations with other people, and my posts become quite short. I hate giving others even minor character action, so I always have to wait for them to respond themselves.

9.) Do you have any (big or small) role playing accomplishments? (ie. finished a role play, was voted legendary somewhere, etc.)
The infamous "Tori". The DM actually threatened to drop a ceiling on me many times, yet Tori still prevailed. Tori survived 'till the bitter end, when our DM gave up on us after we posted over 15 pages in one night (plenty of character action/"Ki"(my other character)).

10.) What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to other role players?
People who obsess over grammer. Some I can understand, like when everything is misspelled/crazily worded. I just don't like it when people yell at me for every single stupid spelling errors (none are perfect). Also, as some of you may notice in the future, my commas are everywhere. The reason behind this is I always put a comma where I would pause if I were actually speaking.
Excessive smily faces irk me.
I hate God Moders. If it's a God Mode RP, then it's fine. There are just so many where it can get really annoying, though.

11.) Do prefer role plays that progress slowly or ones that move along at a steady, fast pace?
Medium. I hate it when all the action happens on a day when I'm not here, but I can't take it if people only post once per 3 days...

12.) What type of role plays would you never do?
Excessive romance. Ones where you play as a character already in existence. Realistic (I already have one life. I don't need another)

13.) Do prefer to type out long, detailed replies to your role plays, medium-length replies, or short ones?
Depends on the situation. Descriptions = long. Conversation = short.

14.) What is one type of role play you want to do someday?
Anything fantasy, really...

15.) What time of day do you tend to write best?
Anytime. All equally horrible. ^.^U

15.) What time of day do you tend to write best? Anytime.
Sundown to sunrise worlds spin above our heads, and all we see are the faint flicker of light that provides them life from times long past.

1.) How old are you?
19
2.) How old were you when you first started role playing?
Forgot. Rough guess; 15?
3.) What website did you first start role playing at and what other sites have your role played at since then?
An amateur game-creation site, which got a RP section, which, well, never really took off.
4.) What used to be your favorite types of role plays when you first started out?
Choice was little, you had the ones with good or decent stories, and the total bullshit ones. Kinda elitist 't was.
5.) What are your favorite types of role plays now?
Favourites limit creativity. I don't like picking them. It's moreso the quality than the theme that matters anyway.
6.) How would you best describe your role playing style to someone who wanted to know?
Bitchy, mean and dominant. I tend to be like "And now we're picking the damn story up and take it somewhere" a lot. But furthermore, dunno.
7.) What are your strong suits in role playing/what are you best at?
Er, it's so cliché to say creativity, but I guess I'll go with it; creativity.
8.) What are you worst at/need to improve when it comes to role playing?
I'm not a native speaker, so I guess it'd mostly my English that needs work. My odd grammar trips and limited vocabulary... But at least firefox helps out with it's built-in spell-check. Furthermore, I guess lengthy and overly detailed descriptions.
9.) Do you have any (big or small) role playing accomplishments? (ie. finished a role play, was voted legendary somewhere, etc.)
I wish.
10.) What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to other role players?
Ignore actions made by others and/or character hijacking. In these cases I refuse to post until it has been dealt with.
11.) Do prefer role plays that progress slowly or ones that move along at a steady, fast pace?
Depends in what sense, I don't require people to post every seven seconds, I prefer people to put some time and effort in their posts. I like being able to post multiple times a week, but not if it goes at the cost of quality.

I don't like slow-moving stories. Seventeen pages and still haven't left the room and still talking about what everyone ate for dinner is a no-go. Of course the other extreme isn't good either, but I don't like things to linger for too long.
12.) What type of role plays would you never do?
Sexually orientated ones. I'll go act pretend to be a whore irl if I'm that desperate kthxbai.
13.) Do prefer to type out long, detailed replies to your role plays, medium-length replies, or short ones?
Depends, depends. Guess I'll settle for the medium-length ones.
14.) What is one type of role play you want to do someday?
Shameless advertising. Honestly though this is one of my oldest writing projects and an RP based on it, I hope it'll turn out nicely.
15.) What time of day do you tend to write best?
I write when I feel like it and my 'feeling like' is too random for words.

Smoke and ash still rising to the sky
She's happy that you're here but when you disappear
She won't know that you're gone to say goodbye

Postby Village Alchemist on Thu Sep 18, 2008 12:33 pm

1.) How old are you? 17

2.) How old were you when you first started role playing? Thirteenish

3.) What website did you first start role playing at and what other sites have your role played at since then? I started with Nationstates.net. I have also roleplayed on the Elder Scrolls forums and a site my friend made, the briefly-lived "Soul Children RP."

4.) What used to be your favorite types of role plays when you first started out? "Nationstates" being what it is (and what it is being a browser-based politics simulation), I found myself mostly in politics- and war-based RP's. I tended towards the more fantasy-styled ones, though.

5.) What are your favorite types of role plays now? Big fantasy adventures, particularly if they lack elves (damn you, elves!).

6.) How would you best describe your role playing style to someone who wanted to know? I use "purple prose." I am not ashamed of it, I think it's pretty, and if you've got a problem with it you can just suck my balls. Or ignore it. Either way is fine.

7.) What are your strong suits in role playing/what are you best at? I think I'm very good at establishing settings--probably because I started out on Nationstates.net, where the characters come secondary to the lands they live in.

8.) What are you worst at/need to improve when it comes to role playing? I have a tendency to, well, forget what I was doing.

9.) Do you have any (big or small) role playing accomplishments? (ie. finished a role play, was voted legendary somewhere, etc.) Nope.

10.) What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to other role players? Japanophilia. Is your own culture not good enough for you or something?

11.) Do prefer role plays that progress slowly or ones that move along at a steady, fast pace? A steady, fast place, please.

12.) What type of role plays would you never do? High School-based role-plays. I escaped that Hell, and I want to stay away from it, thank you.

13.) Do prefer to type out long, detailed replies to your role plays, medium-length replies, or short ones? It depends on the situation. I want a long, detailed post when the RP is just starting and the characters/setting/story need to be detailed. Later on, I don't mind one-paragraph or one-line posts.

14.) What is one type of role play you want to do someday? I've been thinking about trying one of those master/slave RP's. There's some interesting dynamic there. Unfortunately, I don't feel comfortable running one, and all the one's I find have that stupid color-coded-collar system (where in the Hell did that come from, and why won't it go away? It's absurd. No-one want's to buy a slave that's basically labelled as "I have a terminal illness" or "I am a troublemaker.")

Something post-apocolyptic might also be cool, as long as it doesnt' involve a zombie virus (It was cool when Resident Evil did it at first, now it's laaaaame and overplayed.)

15.) What time of day do you tend to write best? Unfortunately, when I'm supposed to be working. :D

3.) What website did you first start role playing at and what other sites have your role played at since then?
Animehorizons.com
4.) What used to be your favorite types of role plays when you first started out?
I used to like doing series RPs like Final Fantasy and some animes.
5.) What are your favorite types of role plays now?
I love to do historical, but they are so hard to find!
6.) How would you best describe your role playing style to someone who wanted to know?
A couple of small paragraphs at a time. I like my characters to be cute and shy.
7.) What are your strong suits in role playing/what are you best at?
Keeping other character's interest.
8.) What are you worst at/need to improve when it comes to role playing?
I suppose I could make my posts longer.
9.) Do you have any (big or small) role playing accomplishments? (ie. finished a role play, was voted legendary somewhere, etc.)
Nope.
10.) What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to other role players?
Not involving everyone some way.

Slowly.
12.) What type of role plays would you never do?
Aliens?
13.) Do prefer to type out long, detailed replies to your role plays, medium-length replies, or short ones?

14.) What is one type of role play you want to do someday?
18th century Romance and War
15.) What time of day do you tend to write best?

1.) How old are you?
17
2.) How old were you when you first started role playing?
12
3.) What website did you first start role playing at and what other sites have your role played at since then?
Habbo Hotel UK, sounds odd but it had a large text based roleplaying community back then.
4.) What used to be your favorite types of role plays when you first started out?
Ones that involved some fighting I'll be honest :P My style has changed a lot in those terms but I still remain not very picky
5.) What are your favorite types of role plays now?
Tends to be pulp, sci fi, soemtimes fantasy roleplays
6.) How would you best describe your role playing style to someone who wanted to know?
I like to play all sorts of different characters. My typing is sometimes overly descriptive but I try not to overdo it.
7.) What are your strong suits in role playing/what are you best at?
I think I'm best at creating the character, making a new person to play with their own background and characteristics.
8.) What are you worst at/need to improve when it comes to role playing?
Probably strategising :P But it's easier on a forum
9.) Do you have any (big or small) role playing accomplishments? (ie. finished a role play, was voted legendary somewhere, etc.)
I was pretty damn well known on Habbo's roleplaying community. I was considered one of the best RPers for a couple years
10.) What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to other role players?
People posting too much before I get back to it :P And posts with no grammar.
11.) Do prefer role plays that progress slowly or ones that move along at a steady, fast pace?
I would say a good steady pace, where users post very frequently, but not so fast that there's a lot of new progression when you return because then your character has been left out of things.
12.) What type of role plays would you never do?
Probably ones soley concerned with romance, I would include a romantic element but only as part of a characters development, not as an entire RP. Sometimes RP's based on TV, movie or books don't work too well either.
13.) Do prefer to type out long, detailed replies to your role plays, medium-length replies, or short ones?
Long and detiled, but sometimes medium length. It all depends on how much other RPers give me to work with.
14.) What is one type of role play you want to do someday?
One that develops well into a very strong group, possibly with a good and challenging enemy to face. Something thought provoking, any genre really. It's happened in real life but not in text based RPs
15.) What time of day do you tend to write best?
Probably mid-day. But my posting style is different depending on the time of day so that's a hard one. I guess it's easier to post coherently at midday.
When the end seem to justify the means, you've tried too hard to find an excuse. When 'by any means necessary' means 'violence may become necessary' you've lost sight of your goal. When people lay down and die rather than endure any more suffering, worry for the state of humanity. When people do not comment on how wrong this is, become angry at the world, because feeling that upset is too hard to bare. When people say 'you care too much' don't answer, because there is no such thing.

Re: The Role Playing Survey ( )

Postby Blast on Sun Sep 21, 2008 4:57 pm

1.) How old are you? 19
2.) How old were you when you first started role playing? Like 8 or 9 I started writing short stories. I started intarwob roleplay when I was 12.
3.) What website did you first start role playing at and what other sites have your role played at since then? I only remember a couple from the start, and I am not divulging those, sorry. I started in 03 at Gaia, have also been on NationStates. I participated in Eshraval (second? incarnation), Aurora and Scandia. I did quite a few IRC and Yahoo chat roleplays as well, and some MU* stuff.
4.) What used to be your favorite types of role plays when you first started out?: One-on-one combat. I remember one which was just a giant chase with intermittent clashes, and went on for weeks.
5.) What are your favorite types of role plays now?: Grand strategy or battles. Politics comes a close second.
6.) How would you best describe your role playing style to someone who wanted to know?: I try to smooth my flow as much as possible, giving a sense of time by describing time-filling habits, and give environmental details where I think they'll add to the scene. If I assume something is known, or is immediately unimportant, I probably won't include it.
7.) What are your strong suits in role playing/what are you best at? I'm good at building background (in fact I think it's necessary, and I sometimes do it with one-off characters) and injecting realism into stories. I can often think steps ahead, working out what A may do to B, and what B may then do to C, and what C may do, which might very well include acting on A in turn. I generally try to have a good word variety in my posts, which is partly why if the RP is real-time that I take so long.
8.) What are you worst at/need to improve when it comes to role playing? I have to be careful not to oversaturate my posts with detail or get too esoteric. I also can't think of how to lay out movements unless I have a map drawn and in front of me.
9.) Do you have any (big or small) role playing accomplishments? I conquered a solar system once. That was fun, although the opponent just kind of crumpled when I hit, so it was like punching a retarded kid. More generally, I scared at least a fourth of a forum's common denizens to death.
10.) What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to other role players? Lack of awareness...? I guess. I don't ever like to assume the role of my enemy, so when I see a simple post generally sending some people my way, without detailing how they're moving or what the formation's composed of, it clogs up things when I have to ask. I guess I could be an arse and say that because they did not say how such-and-such happened, it happened as simply as possible (in my example I guess that'd be like pure LI in a loose column formation at a walk), but I hate that, too (although I've done it, admittedly).

It's either that, or the really common futurist argument "BUT IT'S TEH FUTAR!12!w1" or "BUT I SPEND X $$$ ON IT IT MUST BE POSSLBE" fffffffffffff deat. EDIT: Or maybe ELLIPSES ABUSE D:<
11.) Do prefer role plays that progress slowly or ones that move along at a steady, fast pace? I like slower RPs, as it gives me ample time to let plans steep for a few days or a week before I finalize my plans. The major advantage that round-robin storytelling like this gives is that there's no effective time limit, and every planner knows time is a quantity whose price is measured in tonnes of souls. Well, maybe that's exaggerating, but oh well, it's colorful.
12.) What type of role plays would you never do? Romance. Ugh.
13.) Do prefer to type out long, detailed replies to your role plays, medium-length replies, or short ones? Whatever is needed, tbh. If dialogue is the central element for a series of posts, then very short or even one-line posts are good, as I mentioned in the Flame War forum. I don't like having holes in posts that I have to go back and fill up, jump forward, fill in another hole, jump forward, and then actually do my post, and to be really honest any page-long super-detailed bloviating personal combat reply is intentionally designed to obfuscate and confuse, rather than be any good at all.
14.) What is one type of role play you want to do someday? I don't really know; I'm happy with what I am doing.
15.) What time of day do you tend to write best? Between nine and eleven o'clock most often.

1.) How old are you? 25! 1/4 Century! <-- old hag

2.) How old were you when you first started role playing? 15 +/- Can't remember. I was in 8th grade though!

3.) What website did you first start role playing at and what other sites have your role played at since then? First started out in AOL chat rooms, progressed to Livejournal.

4.) What used to be your favorite types of role plays when you first started out? Star Wars. I was obsessed. It's scary how obsessed I was now that I think back on it..

5.) What are your favorite types of role plays now? Sci-fi/Fantasy/Anime.. honestly though I'm fairly open minded and flexible

6.) How would you best describe your role playing style to someone who wanted to know? When I RP in forum like sites I tend to write in third person story like mode. In AIM I use * * for actions. Such as -- *smacks head against her desk in frustration* Ow.. *rubs her forehead*

7.) What are your strong suits in role playing/what are you best at? Strong suites eh? Um.. Honestly, I don't really know. I have an active imagination so I'm fairly decent at thinking up of some plots?

8.) What are you worst at/need to improve when it comes to role playing? Combat fighting. I'm not horrible, but that's a form that I need to work on.

9.) Do you have any (big or small) role playing accomplishments? (ie. finished a role play, was voted legendary somewhere, etc.) Sadly, not really.

10.) What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to other role players? I feel a rant brewing! Get ready! Insanely poor grammar.. I can't stand it when people just can't take the time to type out an entire word or tYpE LiKE thIs. ugh *shakes head*. Granted, I'm not the best speller in the world and my grammar isn't the best either, but c'mon..There's a line people! I also can't stand all the insane fan-girl/boys...cause c'mon, they just spoil the genre for everybody else. Yes, I have a char that is based off of the Inuyasha series, but, it's an OC and she's now in her own little modern world..But just because I have a char that is loosely based off that show and I RP'd in that genre, I don't want to be branded as a crazy fan-girl.. *takes a deep breath and lets it out* Alrighty, end of rant, next question?

11.) Do you prefer role plays that progress slowly or ones that move along at a steady, fast pace? I prefer one that goes at a decent pace. Nothing so insanely fast where it takes me a day to catch up before I can post, but something where I don't have to wait a day or two to make my next post.

12.) What type of role plays would you never do? Yaio, slashes, furries.. ya get the idea.

13.) Do prefer to type out long, detailed replies to your role plays, medium-length replies, or short ones? Honestly, it varies on the topic at hand. If it's something that requires a long drawn out reply, I'll do it. If it's one that requires a short one, same. It all depends.

14.) What is one type of role play you want to do someday? *shrugs* Not really too sure. ha..

15.) What time of day do you tend to write best? Afternoon/evening or on the weekends.

1.) How old are you?

14.

2.) How old were you when you first started role playing?

13.

3.) What website did you first start role playing at and what other sites have your role played at since then?

I started in one of the United States World of Warcraft servers, not on websites. (Ravenholdt U.S. if you happen to be a player.)

4.) What used to be your favorite types of role plays when you first started out?

Dungeons and Dragon esques. No number crunching, however.

5.) What are your favorite types of role plays now?

Still Dungeons and Dragon esques. Still no number crunching.

6.) How would you best describe your role playing style to someone who wanted to know?

Roleplay within an online computer game holds top priority for me; forum roleplay comes second.

7.) What are your strong suits in role playing/what are you best at?

Biographies and the 'chameleon' character.

8.) What are you worst at/need to improve when it comes to role playing?

Creating names specifically for a select character rather than re-using one of my personal stock names.

9.) Do you have any (big or small) role playing accomplishments? (ie. finished a role play, was voted legendary somewhere, etc.)

Re: The Role Playing Survey ( )

1.) How old are you?
I am 18.

2.) How old were you when you first started role playing?
I believe I was 16.

3.) What website did you first start role playing at and what other sites have your role played at since then?
I started out a neopets for a couple of months. Stopped playing until this past week, then joined here.

4.) What used to be your favorite types of role plays when you first started out?
My favorite types were fantasy, especially medieval.

5.) What are your favorite types of role plays now?
Still, medieval fantasy is my favorite, as well as many other high fantasies.

6.) How would you best describe your role playing style to someone who wanted to know?
My role playing style focuses a lot on character development. I like to role play with someone who can make a character that helps my own grow, and my character doing the same in return. These changes are often brought out by details in the plot.

7.) What are your strong suits in role playing/what are you best at?
I'm good at creating characters who are especially good in a certain area, yet often shy away from the world. I like to watch them come out of their shells. I'm also very creative when it comes to making up good plots. Give me a topic, and within an hour I'll give you a plot that can keep a role play going for months.

8.) What are you worst at/need to improve when it comes to role playing?
Well, I'm still a bit of a beginner, so I need to refine the basics a bit. One thing I want to improve on is making a character's past more developed, and try out more personalities.

9.) Do you have any (big or small) role playing accomplishments?
Er, not really. I don't like to complete role plays because then I feel 'That's it? It's over already? I don't want it to be over!'. Simply put, I have a hard time letting go. I guess you could call it 'empty nest syndrome'.

10.) What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to other role players?
One-liners. Let me see some action and show me that you're interested. I want to see detail about what your character is doing, what they are thinking and how they react to the setting. If you give me a simple one sentence quote, I'll think that you're bored with the role play.

11.) Do prefer role plays that progress slowly or ones that move along at a steady, fast pace?
I like ones that progress at medium speeds. I enjoy a lot of action and adventure, as well as large events that keep us going. But I don't want it to go too fast. I want to be able to get to know your character and see how they take whatever life throws at them.

12.) What type of role plays would you never do?
I'd never do a Horror role play, or anything R rated or above. Those kinds of themes are a bit intense and overwhelming for me, and I do better without them. I'd also like to avoid romances and realistic as well. Those end too quickly and remind me too much of everyday life. I have enough of that already :)

13.) Do prefer to type out long, detailed replies to your role plays, medium-length replies, or short ones?
Medium-long length replies. If I'm really into it, most of my replies will be between three and five paragraphs long.

14.) What is one type of role play you want to do someday?
I'd love to do a role-play that involves people jumping through dimensions or being dumped in a parallel universe.

15.) What time of day do you tend to write best?
I write best in the afternoon, evening and night. When I start winding down, all sorts of ideas pop into my mind, so I get very creative. Well, I am actually a creative person by nature, and can make a good effort if I want to any time of the day as long as I've slept the previous night.
The world is like an oyster with a precious pearl inside. Let's not break it open with force but with gentle co-operation.

If I'm not replying as much, its because I'm currently back at college, so have more work to do.

1.) How old are you?
Let's go with around 13. I know, surprise, surprise. Don't I seem so mature? Just kidding.

2.) How old were you when you first started role playing?
10

3.) What website did you first start role playing at and what other sites have your role played at since then?
Let's see, I started role playing on a website called AVirtualHorse. From there I progressed to GaiaOnline, and then onto Blossom Forest RPG.(The best of those other then RPG.) After that I joined RPG. Then I joined A Warrior Cats Website, for a nice mindless role play.

4.) What used to be your favorite types of role plays when you first started out?
My favorite types of role plays were realistic role plays.

5.) What are your favorite types of role plays now?
I don't really like realistic any more. I get enough of that already. Now I am into mainly historic role plays. Unfortunately I have trouble finding good ones on here. I also enjoy Fantasy role plays along with scifi. And of course the realistic RP thrown into the mix mash. Old habits die hard.

6.) How would you best describe your role playing style to someone who wanted to know?
I try to make post descriptive but I must admit that I don't follow through with my characters. I try and make the role play enjoyable for others, and try and make a pretty descriptive post for the next person.

7.) What are your strong suits in role playing/what are you best at?
My strong suit I would say is starting. I start off pretty strong, or at least I try to convince myself that I do.

8.) What are you worst at/need to improve when it comes to role playing?
I am not so great at most of my role playing skills. I can make okay characters but I have trouble following through with them and their attitudes. They end up acting to much like me. I also have trouble with starting my own role plays. I usually get it started pretty well, but they usually don't get past OOC. My longest RP was 7 pages. And it was full to the brim of beginners who wrote undetailed, and meaningless posts. Peh, and pretty much everything else.

9.) Do you have any (big or small) role playing accomplishments? (ie. finished a role play, was voted legendary somewhere, etc.)
I don't really think I have any feats to boast about. Let me know if I do, which I highly doubt.

10.) What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to other role players?
My pet peeves. Do you want a list or just for me to summarize them all. Just kidding, I don't have that many. Grammar, like not capitalizing the correct words, using '...' at the end of every sentence not just a regular period. I can stand spelling as long as it's not all the time, and I absolutely hate chat speak. (Like OMG, like how can I like totally hate it? It's teh saddest thing!(Sarcasm)) I must admit that I have totally started disliking any role play in which a person comes along and uses an 'emo' picture or manga picture. I find it stupid, I mean whats the point of text-based Rping with pictures. Okay, I don't always mind pictures but the 'emo' pictures and Manga ones always bug me. Whats the obsession with 'emo' people for anyway. And why would an actual 'emo' person advertise themselves like that. I thought they were supposed to be all depressed and mood. Wow, okay. That was long. I can give post forgiveness though, the grammar and etc is for the ones that I know can do a lot better. (Mainly ninjakitty.)

11.) Do prefer role plays that progress slowly or ones that move along at a steady, fast pace?
Is there an answer (c). I like role plays that are steady yet move at a pace that I can go along with, because. Hello, am I the only with a life off the computer?

12.) What type of role plays would you never do?
Let's go with any Anime/Manga role play.

13.) Do prefer to type out long, detailed replies to your role plays, medium-length replies, or short ones?
I like medium length, or else I bore my bloody brain out. Anyway, I type really slowly and get distracted way to easily. See there's a cat over there, I am now going to waste 10 minutes of my time trying to get her on my lap and then I'll ignore her. I am easily distracted. Oh kitty...

14.) What is one type of role play you want to do someday?
A successful role play that doesn't end after a few pages.

15.) What time of day do you tend to write best?
When I should be concentrating on something. (Remember, easily distracted. And well, easily amused.)
