Relieved that they'd finally gotten done with the awkward subject, Gee just nodded as she set the cup of tea down in front of Sam.
"Two seconds; it's in my bag, in the living room,"

After a minute digging around in her bag, she finally found it. One of the edges was bent, and she smoothed it out, before going back into Sam and handing it to him, dropping in to the seat beside him so she could look too.
"At least it's only one," She told him, half-smiling. She could still feel some tension between them, and she wanted to get rid of it so that for just once, they could actually act like they were friends. Just once. At the same time, it wasn't just a joke - if she had have seen two babies on the scan, it's possible she could have lost her mind, because she was going to have enough trouble explaining away just one.

"What d'you think it'll be?" She asked, now unable to take her eyes off the picture. To anyone who hadn't seen the scan before, it would have been hard to see it, but Gee could pick out every last detail of the baby, the way she'd seen it on the scan.

"I think it'll be a girl. Just a feeling. I don't care either way, though; do you?"

Sitting so close to Gee and looking at a scan of their baby with her was quite possibly one of the weirdest things that Sam had ever done in a kitchen, excluding the doubtful circumstances that had surrounded one of Liam's parties years ago, in which Sam had woken up on the kitchen floor the next day with the worst hangover he'd ever had and his face completely painted red with tomato sauce. Pushing memories of this aside, he leaned closer to the picture with her and shrugged when she asked him what he thought it was. He didn't want to guess; he wanted it to be a surprise.

"I don't know. I don't mind either way." He looked closer at the picture, tracing the outline of the baby with his eyes. It was nothing really, just a sort of weird shape, and in amongst all the other weird shapes on the picture it might have been hard to spot. Somehow, though, Sam had memorized every last detail from what had been pointed out to them on the scan, and he could see the baby very clearly.

"We'll probably need to start thinking of names and stuff," he said at last. "And clearing out that spare room, too. I can decorate it or something, maybe." It was still difficult to talk to Gee - what did they really have in common? - but as long as he was focussed on the baby, it was easier. He didn't like to think of the awkwardness that would surely arise between them when they ran out of things to discuss about their unborn child, but he was hopeful that they would have found some other common ground to talk about by then.

"You think it's going to be a girl, then? Any ideas for names or anything?"
