Gee kept her eyes closed when she heard Sam come back in, which made the awkwardness go away a little, but it all came flooding back when he got into bed beside her.

You didn't feel this awkward when you were touching four months ago a snide voice in her head said, and she knew that if that voice were a real person, she'd throw them headfirst out a window. If she could go back and re-do it, she wouldn't actually say no - she'd just make sure he wore a condom or something. Even so, it was about two hours before she could finally get to sleep, and even then, it was an uneasy one.

And then came the nightly ritual of having to pee.

It had happened a lot since she'd gotten pregnant - the doctor had said it was because she baby would be pressing on her bladder, but it didn't feel like that - it felt like it had squished it to the size of a pea. Normally, she would've just got up and went to the toilet before going back to sleep, but the difference tonight was Sam was lying beside her, and the floorboards creaked when you walked on them, and she really didn't want to wake him up, because that would just create more awkwardness. She tried to hold it in as long as she could, but eventually she had to get up before she wet herself. Fuck Sam and the creaky floorboards she didn't want a kidney infection, or the baby to get a kidney infection. If that was possible.

Coming back from the toilet, she tried to go as quietly as she could, but that notion went out the window when she realise that in the few minutes she'd been gone, Sam had completely taken over her bed.

"Goddamn it, Sam, move over," She hissed, lightly thumping him on the arm.

The sound of light creaking on the floorboards disturbed Sam's sleep, and he floated for a moment in a state of semi-consciousness, before wondering to himself what on earth he was doing hanging off the edge of his bed. Rolling sideways, he lay in the exact centre and closed his eyes again to get back to sleep, his half-awake brain failing to register the alteration in his surroundings and forgetting entirely that this was not his bed, but Gee's. Comfortable in his ignorance, it took only a few moments before he was deeply asleep again.

And then something hit his arm, jerking him awake. With a half-strangled yelp, he realized someone was standing right over him and scrambled backwards as his mind fought to catch up with what was going on. Gee, said a voice in his head, and he slowly began to connect his brain back together and figure out that he was in her bed. She was hissing something about moving over, and he had no desire to stay awake much longer in her company. It was easier to be sound asleep.

"Okay, okay," he said, in a sleep-laden mumble, and he rolled sideways again, back to hanging off the edge of the mattress. In doing so, he unintentionally dragged most of the covers with him; they were tucked tightly under him as he rolled and within seconds, he was asleep again, not realizing that he had left Gee with hardly any duvet whatsoever.

To Gee's relief, it didn't take much to wake Sam up, and she was glad of that because she was too tired to argue with him about anything. She climbed into the bed beside him as he rolled over, turning onto her side again, before she realised he had all the covers tucked underneath him - and oh joy, the heating wasn't on in her room.

"Sam, give me some of the covers," She said, tugging at them. He didn't wake up, and she scowled in the dark.

"Sam. Sam."

Still, he didn't wake up, and she pulled at the covers. They hardly moved.

"Oh, for God's sake!" She got the feeling this was stupid and childish, but still - she was fucking freezing, and she wasn't sleeping like that. Hitting him lightly, she waited for him to wake up again, but apparently he was in a coma. She hit him again, harder, still scowling in the dark.

"Fuck's sake, Sam, wake up!"

Oh, for fuck's sake. Another strike to his shoulder woke Sam with a yelp in the dark, his arm now throbbing where he had been hit. He rolled over to see what was wrong now, and found Gee glaring at him, apparently with no covers whatsoever. Incredibly annoyed that that was all he had been woken up for, he extracted himself from the duvet with difficulty and threw it over her.

"Happy now?" he hissed, lying back down on the mattress and huddling his arms around himself. His resolve not to use any covers all night lasted sixty seconds flat - he counted every painful one of them - and then he was forced to concede defeat. It was just too fucking cold to cope without any duvet at all. Rolling onto his other side, so that his front was uncomfortably pressed against Gee, he tentatively took hold of a corner of the sheet. Her eyes were closed; he assumed she was sound asleep.

Gently, he tugged at the blanket, and a sliver of it came away from her. Holding his breath, he continued to tug, bit by bit, intending to steal enough of the duvet back to keep him warm without having to dent his pride by actually asking her for it. He was just congratulating himself on this scheme, when he suddenly realized that she was not, in fact, asleep.

Well, shit.

Scowling again as Sam had a strop and tossed all the covers at her, she watched as he rolled onto his side in a huff. Pulling them over her, she lay down again and closed her eyes so she could go back to sleep, but what felt like a minute later, Sam had turned around and was slowly trying to pull the covers back. She hadn't even realised what he was doing, more concerned with the fact she was pressed extremely close to him, and then she bizzarely wondered that if they got too close, would they crush the baby? Where that thought had come from, she had no idea, but she was obviously showing now, and the thought of someone crushing the baby disturbed her.

Finally, though, she realise that the covers were being pulled away from her, and her eyes snapped open. Sitting up straight, she glared at him.

"Jesus Christ, Sam! If you wanted some of the fucking covers, you could have just asked! I mean, God, Sam, why are you being so childish? Who am I going to spend more time running after, you or this baby? You're acting like a five year old, Sam - grow up, and stop being such a fucking idiot," She hissed, quietly fuming and hoping that her and Sam's argument wouldn't wake up Ruby and Charlie. Even if it did though, she really didn't care - Sam was annoying her, and she had to chew him out, otherwise she'd just be snappy with everyone the next day.

The fact she'd been waiting to chew him out since they were in high school helped a good bit too.

Gee sat up, which Sam had been afraid of. She couldn't just let it go, could she? Pretend to be asleep, and let him have some covers? No; she had to take every opportunity she could to bite his head off and let him know exactly what she thought of him, didn't she? His jaw grew tighter and tighter with every word she spoke, and his hand curled into a fist beside him on the duvet. Without even realizing it, he had sat up too, and he could feel anger thundering through him. It was anger for everything: Liam's ignorance and obsession with Charlie; how unfair it was that after one mistaken encounter, Gee was pregnant; being in a strange country that he didn't know - and loneliness. Anger for the fact that he felt so fucking alone.

So he kissed her. Don't breathe. Don't even think. It was blind, furious, and a desperate endeavour to feel someone against him, under him, kissing him back; someone who he could fool himself might even care about him a little bit. He kissed her so he didn't start punching something, and he kissed her because he needed to, needed her because he had absolutely nobody. He didn't know if she would shove him away, or if she would respond, or if it would lead to anything else. He was just living for now, for the fact that his lips were against hers at this moment in time, and nothing else mattered.

Nothing.

Shock left Gee a statue as Sam kissed her. She never thought this would happen again. Fuck, she'd never even thought she'd ever have sex with him in the first place, nevermind carry his child, but still. She hadn't expected him to kiss her, though - she'd actually always thought that Sam fucked people because of how they looked; but that was probably because he'd been fucking Olivia all through high school, and even though Gee hated her, she'd had to admit she was pretty.

The shock left her after a few seconds, and she wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer to her. If this were any other time, she'd push him away and tell him to fuck off, but there was something like desperation in the way he was kissing her, so she let him, and then she started kissing him back.

There was an uncomfortable thought in her head for a second - This is only going to lead to meaningless sex.

Then again, had sex for them ever been meaningful in the first place? Or was it just a way to get rid of the loneliness?

She didn't dwell on the thought for too long, but even after they'd done it, and she was lying with his arm around her, she felt like she was going to cry.

"We can't keep doing this, Sam. It's not right. It's not right, because it doesn't mean anything," She said quietly. God, nothing about their relationship meant anything, except the baby. Their baby, which was probably going to be so fucked up by their relationship it wouldn't have a chance.

"This is going to be the last time, right Sam? Because we really don't need this getting to be any worse than it already is,"

Wave after wave of conflicted emotions crashed through Sam as he lay with his arm around Gee, any quick high from what they had just done fading fast as he looked down at her face in the dark. The confusion there reflected his own feelings exactly, and he wondered if he was even doing the right thing by wrapping his arm around her like this. But what else was he supposed to have done, roll over with his back to her and go to sleep as soon as they had finished?

"You're right," he said, as she finished speaking. "We shouldn't do this again." He wondered if he ought to have lied, and told her he loved her, and that of course it had meant something. But both of them knew that that wasn't the truth.

She looked desolate, he thought, and hated himself for making that happen. Tentatively, he kissed her forehead, but it was less a romantic gesture than a comforting one. "You know I'm going to be here for you, right? I promise you won't have to do this by yourself. Even if we're not sleeping together, we can ... we can work something out." Something told him that even if they were capable of talking comfortably now, awkwardness was going to return tenfold with the coming of morning when they awoke to find each other naked and her wrapped in his arms. But he was too tired to move, and sleep was already beginning to take him.

Sam's words didn't actually to much to reassure Gee. Even though she liked the feeling of his arm around her, and she enjoyed what they'd just done, she knew that really, it wasn't going to work out for her and Sam. How could it? The only thing that connected them was the baby, and even that would probably fall apart after a few months.

"Yeah," She said quietly, agreeing with him even though she didn't believe him - she was too tired to believe him.
"We'll work something out, Sam. Eventually,"

She was too tired to talk to him now, and it didn't take long for sleep to overcome her. The next morning would mean red faces and akward moments for both of them, but at that moment, she just didn't care.

At that moment, she didn't care about anything.

Sam woke slowly as the sunlight lanced through a gap in the curtains and struck his eyes. They flickered open, and the first thing he saw was Gee's face, inches from his own. He could see her eyes moving a little behind their closed lids, and he knew she would be awake shortly. Embarrassment crashed through him as he remembered what they'd done, a feeling underlined by the fact that they were still wrapped around each other, both completely unclothed.

He had to get up and reach the shower before Gee woke, because at least then they wouldn't have to suffer the humiliation of getting up and dressed in front of each other. Besides, they wouldn't even have to acknowledge what they'd done if he could just get out of here and get himself showered and dressed before she was awake.

Very carefully, he began trying to shuffle away from her, but his arm was trapped under her and one of hers was around him, too. Praying he wouldn't wake her up, he gently shifted, but nothing happened; he was either going to have to yank his arm out from around her and disturb her sleep anyway, or just wait for her to wake up herself.

With a sigh, he prepared himself for the embarrassment.

Gee was suprised to wake up with someone's arms wrapped around her. Her eyes weren't open, and her memories weren't all there, and she found herself wondering what the hell she was doing. This was David right? But he was on tour. So who...?

A nudge in her abdomen allowed everything to come rushing back, and her eyes snapped open. Oh Christ. Her and Sam were lying too close for comfort, wrapped around each other, and they were naked, and finally all her memories came back. Her face burned red, and she rolled away from him, getting out of the bed and throwing her underwear and pyjamas back on. Her face was still bright red when this was finished, and she found herself not wanting to be in the same room as him. Mumbling something about getting breakfast, she shot out of the room as fast as she could, leaning over the kitchen sink as she waited for her face to cool down. Then again, better to lean over here to stop being embarassed than to lean over it and throw up.

Still, what the hell had her and Sam been playing at? This had just made everything worse. Groaning, she got herself a bowl of cereal and sat down at the kitchen table to eat, hoping that when Sam followed her down, there wouldn't be the awkwardness; but she knew that there was no point hoping against hope. Mentally kicking herself for not pushing him away wehn he kissed her, she just hoped that they could at least talk without bringing it up; it wasn't really something to discuss over breakfast.

Sam watched Gee wake up with his face burning red. She instantly pushed herself away from him, redressing in her pyjamas and mumbling excuses before she hastily left the room. Face still burning, Sam threw back the covers at last - he hadn't wanted to whilst she was in the room - and dressed quickly in his shorts before going into the bathroom and spending as long as he possibly could in the shower. He really didn't want to have to face Gee.

By the time he was dressed and had reached the kitchen, Gee was sitting at the table and eating a bowl of cereal. The packet was still on the counter, so he made a show of getting himself some - anything to avoid having to speak to Gee. In the end, however, he had no choice other than to sit down in the chair opposite her. Words failed him; what was he supposed to say to her the morning after meaningless sex? It wasn't even as if it was a one-night-stand that he could just walk away from; this embarrassment had to continue, because he lived here now.

"So," he said at last, when the tension reached unbearable heights, and then he couldn't think of anything with which to extend the word into a question. Seized by a random urge to start talking about the weather for the sake of something to say, he stared wildly out of the window and realized that there was not much to say about grey clouds - the weather was featureless. Great.

"So, when's your next scan?" he asked, out of sheer desperation - he already knew the answer to that question, but it was the only thing he could think of to say. Picking up his spoon, he started eating his cereal rather more loudly than was necessary, in attempt to ensure that he didn't have to say anything else until she had replied.

Gee kept her eyes firmly on the cereal in her bowl as Sam came in, but by the time he spoke, she'd been ready to walk out; she'd already finished the cereal, and was rinsing the bowl in the sink. Turning to face him, she leaned against the counter and shrugged. He knew this, because she'd told him, but it was something to talk about, and that was good enough.

"Later today," She told him, finally meeting his eye; it lasted about a second before she looked away again. "Charlie was supposed to come with me, then we'd go shopping; but like, if you want to come, go ahead. It's your kid," Immediately, she wished she could have bitten her tongue out; why the hell had she just invited him with her? That would mean more awkwardness, God damn it.

"The doctors say they'll be able to find out the gender of the baby soon, if we want. Think we should?" She asked, for something to say, and hopefully to take his mind off the invite. Things were going to get more awkward, she could tell, but if they avoided each other, it meant less awkwardness; right?

Sam was relieved that she had accepted the subject change, and he found himself nodding as she invited him to go with her. However, by the time he started nodding, she had moved on to asking him whether he wanted to know the gender of the baby, so he abruptly switched to shaking his head. He'd always thought that if he had a child, he wanted to wait until it was born until he saw what it was.

"I'd rather not find out," he told her; "and yeah, I'll come with you to the scan." Part of him was aware of the fact that she was probably regretting asking him along - after the awkwardness that last night had caused, she probably didn't want to be anywhere near him - but he was determined to be there throughout the pregnancy, and to not get left out. He stood up, taking his now-empty bowl over to the sink and washing it without looking at her. In the back of his mind, Sam suddenly felt that he should bring up what had happened last night; he wanted to know exactly what that had been for her, but how the hell was he supposed to bring that up?

"Gee..." he said at last, still staring determinedly into the sink, but the words ran out before they could find his mouth, and he found himself ending the sentence in a defeated tone of voice. "You should go and get ready. We don't want to be late for the scan."

Gee looked up when Sam said her name, and there was a number of silent seconds before he told her just to go and get ready. He had wanted to say something else, and she knew it; but she was too afraid to ask, in case in had something to do with the previous night.

"Alright," She said quietly, making her way into the bathroom and showering as quickly as she could. It didn't take her long to dress, in clothes easy to change out of, and she found Sam in the living room. Pulling on her jacket, she raised an eyebrow at him.

"Ready?"

It didn't take long to get to the doctors; it wasn't too far away, but for some reason, Gee slipped her hand into Sam's as they walked, simply because she hoped it would make things a little more comfortable for them. It probably wouldn't, but it gave her a bit of comfort. She had never, ever though she'd be walking hand and hand with Sam Scoufield to see a scan of their baby though - she was still suprised anything like this had happened at all. Still, it was better just not to question it, because that led to more awkwardness.

After fifteen minutes in the waiting room, they were finally allowed to go through. They were given a few minutes until Gee changed into one of the hospital gowns, and she found herself glad she would be lying down; she had always suspected those gaps at the back were for the perverted doctors. Thankfully, it was a woman doctor who'd be doing the scan; lying back, she felt herself shiver as the doctor spread the gel over her baby bump; God damn, she was only four and a half months along, she wasn't that big, and there was no need for that much gel, because it was fucking freezing. Pressing something which looked suspiciously like a scanner at the supermarket tills against her bump, the doctor examined the screen the machine was hooked up to. Gee couldn't see much until the doctor pointed it out to her; there. The outline of her baby.

"It's small," She said, suprised. She could see the definite shape of it's head, and it's legs, but she was suprised it was that small. She had expected something a little bigger. Looking over at Sam, still somewhat bewildered, she hadn't realized she was smiling, and she grinned over at him, waiting for his reaction to seeing their baby.

Walking along with Gee in awkward silence was not one of the most fun experiences of Sam's life, and he was trying to think of something to say in order to distract them both from thinking about last night - memories of which were currently hanging between them as solidly as a brick wall - when she suddenly slipped her hand into his. For a moment, he tensed in surprise, but then he forced himself to relax and entwined his fingers with hers. The simple gesture that she had made suddenly reduced the awkwardness between them without the need for words, and it comforted him, too - he was wound as tight as a spring at the thought of seeing the scan. Lately, he had been finding himself constantly worried that there would be something wrong with their baby, and, if he was honest, he was terrified that that might be proved today.

After sitting in the waiting room for what felt like forever, but in reality was probably only about fifteen minutes, they were allowed to go through. Sam hovered awkwardly in the background as the doctor pulled up Gee's hospital gown and spread gel over the slight bump that was their baby, but as soon as the image started to be shown on the screen, he turned his full attention on that. For a moment, he couldn't see anything - just a weird, grainy picture and certainly no baby. But then the doctor pointed and there it was; he could see it clearly now. His baby.

He saw Gee's head turn and looked down, meeting her eyes; she was grinning at him, and he realized that he was smiling, too. "That's our baby," he said, feeling the need to say it aloud because he hardly believed it. "That's our baby, Gee." Fears that something was wrong faded as he flicked a glance at the doctor and saw that she was smiling; it was fine. In that moment, he was happier than he'd ever been, despite the tension with Gee, because he was looking at his baby for the first time and everything was going to be okay.

Gee's grin became wider as Sam smiled back at her, and the doctor was saying something about how everything was fine with it, but she didn't hear that, really; she was too happy to pay attention to it.

The doctor left then, giving Gee some paper towels to clean herself up with, and then she changed back into her normal clothes, unable to stop smiling. She held Sam's hand again on the way home, but she felt like there was more of a connection between them now, somehow. The awkwardness of last night was going to have to be discussed, but right now, she wasn't focused on that; she was focused on the baby, but for the first time it wasn't the baby, it was their baby. And as strange as that was, and as terrified she was of the birth, knowing she was going to be a mother suddenly wasn't so bad anymore.

She didn't want to ruin their happiness, but as soon as they got home she knew they were going to have to talk about it. Otherwise it would just get worse.
"Sam..." She was silent for a few minutes, wrestling with herself, before she gave in, and moved on to a different subject. "Why'd you move out of Liam's?"

All the way home, Sam's thoughts were completely focussed on the baby, and holding Gee's hand suddenly seemed very meaningful. He knew that in truth that the only connection that they really shared was their baby, but that now seemed like more than enough to hold them together. Buoyed up on happiness, it was with a sinking heart that he heard the tone of voice with which she addressed him when they reached her flat, but when she asked her question, it wasn't what he had been expecting. Evidently, she had also lost her nerve when it came to bringing up last night, but he didn't really want to answer the question about Liam either. He doubted that she'd be impressed if she found out that Gerard was hunting him down for money.

"We were just arguing a lot," he lied, not quite meeting her eye. "I'm sick of Liam. All he ever talks about is Charlie. And I wanted to be here for you and the baby." This was ridiculous, seeing as the baby wasn't even born yet, and the lie also made him feel guilty - being here for Gee and their child hadn't actually entered his head once until he'd gotten here - but it was said now, and it was better than telling her that he had a dangerous drug-addict chasing him for money that he didn't have. She'd probably kick him out on the spot.

"Oh. He's still not given up on her yet? Damn. She's pissed off about that - the whole stalking her thing. You should have just slapped him and told him to move on; she's never gonna take him back," She told him, accepting the lie. She could see why he'd want to, but that was her point of view, and that was extremely biased. But she couldn't be blamed for that.

"So you'll be here until the baby's born, right?" She asked, realizing that this was not going to be easy. It was a miracle her and Sam had gotten this far through the day without fighting; how the hell were they supposed to survive the next five months without killing each other?
"That's good. 'Cause like, we need to pick out names, and shop, and stuff," There was another long silence, before she sighed.

"Look, Sam, last night; last night was just a one-time thing. Because it can't be more than that, and we both know it. So just get this over with; it was awkward, and I don't know why we did it, but it can't happen again; it'll just make everything worse,"

There. Something had been said. Although to be honest, Gee wasn't sure if that was that. Her relationship with Sam had once been mutual loathing, but now it was just unpredictable; who's to say they wouldn't end up in bed again? God, she needed to change this subject.

"D'you want a cup of tea or something?"

Wow, way to go, Gina. You can really start a riveting conversation with the father of your child, well fucking done.

Relief flooded Sam as Gee accepted his lie without further question; he really didn't fancy trying to explain to her about Liam's psycho cousin. She moved on to asking him if he would be here until their baby was born, and suddenly it didn't seem like such a good idea to Sam. One night in the same bed and they'd nearly killed each other before ending up having frustrated sex - was it really such a good idea for this arrangement to continue? But what other choice did he have? Go crawling back to Liam and face Gerard? Yeah, right.

Before he could expand further on these thoughts, however, he realized that Gee had changed the subject to one that he really didn't want to discuss. He stayed mute throughout her telling him that the previous night had been a one-time thing that couldn't ever be repeated, but privately he agreed with her. The last thing he wanted was more awkwardness between them - but then, if he was supposed to be living with Gee for at least five months, and she wouldn't sleep with him, what was he supposed to do about that? This thought left him stricken for a moment. Was she really expecting him to be celibate for five whole months, possibly more? He doubted that she'd be happy with him sleeping with somebody else, and he wasn't sure that he wanted to do that anyway - what if he got another girl pregnant, too? Oh God, that would be a nightmare. He'd just be walking from baby to baby for his whole life - but that still didn't solve the problem that he didn't want to not sleep with anybody at all for almost half a year.

Before he could even think of how to phrase these concerns, however, Gee had moved on - she was offering him a cup of tea. Evidently, the issue was closed for her, and Sam couldn't think of any way back into the conversation without blatantly asking her whether he was allowed to have sex. Deciding that he'd rather not sound pathetic, he let the issue drop for now, despite the fact that it did seem like quite an important one to him. Instead, he followed her through to the kitchen, sitting down on one of the chairs whilst she put the kettle on. He was still fighting an internal battle with himself over whether or not to bring up the point that was now so troubling him, but in the end he pushed it aside and sought for something to take his mind off it. It wasn't too difficult - the picture he had seen on the scan was still firmly imprinted on his mind's eye and he wanted to discuss it with her.

"That scan was probably the most amazing thing I've ever seen," he said at last. Gee had the picture of it that they had been given, and he found himself wanting to look at it again, if only to prove to himself all over again that yes, there really was a baby. He still found it difficult to come to terms with the fact that he had actually made something so special. "Can I have a look at that picture again?" he asked, glad that they had left behind the awkward conversation altogether.

RolePlayGateway is a site built by a couple roleplayers who wanted to give a little something back to the roleplay community. The site has no intention of earning any profit, and is paid for out of their own pockets.

If you appreciate what they do, feel free to donate your spare change to help feed them on the weekends. After selecting the amount you want to donate from the menu, you can continue by clicking on PayPal logo.
