The Wastelanders ( )

Postby Paradigm on Thu Sep 16, 2010 7:58 pm

Due to (semi)popular(everyone who responded agreed) request The Wastelanders will be moved to PbP mode
We'll see how it goes for now.

Droplets of water trickled from a rusted metal watering can, loosely being held in the grip of a frail old man who was sweating under the sun. They dripped down upon half-dead roses, which were being scorched under the intense heat of the sun up above. Ever so faintly they were pushed by a breeze, to which the old man let out a sigh. He tipped the can back upright, and moved on to the next set of flowers. He immediately dropped the can. It landed with a thud upon the concrete ground. They were coming. But who? Who was coming?

The wastelanders. The Wastelanders were coming. They loot, steal, extort and murder for fun after they have looted, stolen, extorted and murdered for survival. Most importantly, they hated humans. Which is ironic, being they evolved from humans. They had 98% human DNA, and still beared heavy human resemblance. But their reason for hate was valid.

----- Some History -----

In the year 2035 a deadly nuclear war between the New USSR and the North American Alliance(NAA) obliterated near all civilization that had been built upon the earths surface. Considering the fact that, by 2025, nearly all of Earth was one megatropolis, the damage was catastrophic. Governments fell apart. Innocent people were vaporized or killed by radiation. Some survived unharmed, unmutated, but others..they weren't so lucky. The radiation altered their genetic code every so slightly.. one set of code was shifted one 'tick' and set a deadly evolutionary step into motion. The Wastelanders were born. They have increased muscle mass, stronger bones, larger lungs and hearts.. and more demanding hunger levels. They consumed nearly four times what a normal human being would. They consumed human beings. Though, they still have intelligence. They still show signs of intelligence, they 'talk', but not with set languages, but rather like animals using basic sounds to symbolize a few different key things like "Food here" "Run" "Danger" and such. This is usually done in the form of grunting. But, enough about them.

----- Now -----

Presently, it is the year 2235. The two hundredth anniversary of the Final War. The Wastelanders have long since been at war with the remaining Human Beings, however. As the Humans rebuild settlements among the ruins of Earth, the Wastelanders carve out Necropolis' underground. As the Humans try to help the wounded, the Wastelanders drag them off into dark corners and consume them alive.

You are a human, fighting for survival against the Wastelanders. You need not worry about radiation, for it has all been washed away by the sands of time. You need not worry about food and shelter, for Humans have cleared ruined towers and created sprawling cities. The largest city boasts a massive population of an entire 2,500 people. Quite a bit, considering the apocalypse and all. Your journey shall start in Feran, a city with a population of only about 120 people. Your goal: Survive. You may be a loner, you may be a visionary rallying the citizens, or you may be a raider, as equally vicious as the Wastelanders. It is your choice from here on in.

Grace looked toward Gears when he spoke, noting the terrible sadness in his voice. Did someone die? That thought was pushed forward even more when he said lose someone else, was he speaking of his wife and child or..someone else? "I've done what I can for now as I said the bleeding is stopped but infection is what will be our worry. The shard in his chest, I'll remove it but I'll need help. With some luck he'll pull through." She pet Eli's head having used a jacket from an onlooker as a pillow for him. "If you'd be willing to help in the extraction I'd be grateful."

Dimitri noticed the crowd gathering outside. "I'll be right back, Church," Dimitri said, making his way over to the crowd. He made his way to the front of the swarm of people. "Oh no.." he said lightly, seeing Eli and his arm. And his arm wasn't attached to his body. He also noticed his chest bleeding heavily, Grace applying medical help to him. "This is not good at all." He said. There was no question left in his mind. If they didn't leave Feran, they would surely die.

Just one waster attack such as this would kill every last living person in Feran. Even activating the defense systems again would likely destroy the buildings, which weren't very strong anymore. If they stayed, they would not survive. "Grace, is Eli in good enough condition to travel? Or does he have to stay in a stable environment?" Dimitri asked.

Eli laid on the ground. His mind was somewhere in the middle of dreams, and reality. He wasn't fully conscious. He was still dreaming of his past. But now it was much blurrier, everything was unorganized pieces of his memories flew back at him in the wrong order. His, wound, would heal. In time. His lungs would now need help to breathe though. He could feel something, a heaviness in his chest. And numbness in his left arm. He could hear the faint echo of a crowds voices. Was he still alive, what had happened to him?

The robot moved down the street. In its hands was a box, containing the blue prints Eli was working on, as well as a map, Eli's parents left behind.

(So just get everyone moving out of the city and perform whatever need to be performed to keep Eli alive. Try to be gentle though, don't literally turn him into steam-punk Darth Vader, i still want him to be as human as possible. Thnk you. I have to leave soon, but hopefully ill be on later tonight.)

Midnight moved out of the way of the little robot, following curiously. She watched the box, unsure. But she was sure enough that Dud would want to help Eli; that much was sure. She picked her pace up a little, deciding the robot would make it's way there on it's own. She slowed a little when she saw Eli again, and shook her head. She had told him he was going to get himself hurt; that he was the most likely to be lost. But he still had gone. She moved around and stood a little behind Grace, watching him. Apparently someone was worried about whether or not he would be able to travel. "...When did travel become a plan? Where would we be heading?" She paused, glancing back at Eli, then at Grace. "...Will we be able to move him?"

Grace heard Dimitri's voice and sighed looking off in the distance as she thought. "Well the only things I have to help him with are here in my bag. All of my extra supplies were destroyed along with my house. He needs more help than I'll be able to give him here. We shouldn't move him but we have to." They would need to remove the metal first, she supposed she could place a seal over his chest. That would keep air from rushing into his chest cavity and provide temporary relief and ability to breath..but not for long. She ran a hand over her hair as different scenarios of what she could do ran through her mind. "A nearby colony that could provide us with more medical supplies and equipment is what we'll need."

"Gears, Midnight, any suggestions? You two came from outside sources." Dimitri asked. He had been eying Eli's injuries the entire conversation. Coming from a military background, they weren't the worst injuries he had seen, but the worst he had seen to a friend. He hated the Wasters. They were freaks of nature. He regretted the fact that they were even brought into existence. Too many friends had been killed, injured or kidnapped by them. God only knows what happens to those that are dragged off into the darkness of the Waster Necropolis'. Torture would be about the nicest thing they could do to them in the depths of their caverns.

Dean was just about ready to go. He had found a truck that was operational, and had loaded everything into it. It was time to find a new place he would call home. Dean turned the key, and the truck just sputtered. He turned it again, and it started up. He faintly wondered what had happened to Midnight and Eli, but then just stepped on the gas pedal and drove out the gate, headed to wherever this road would take him.

(tired... cant come up with anything good.)
Famous Last Words.

"I can do it..." "It's not poisonous..." "Let a PRO show you how it's done..." "No, no, let me get it..." "What could possibly go wrong?" "Well, at least it can't get any worse." "Of COURSE I can handle it!" "Just a little more..." "Just one more..." "How bad could it be?" "Yeah, yeah, I got it, I got it..."

Gear thought to himself for a second. There had to be somewhere that they could take Eli. That's when it came to him.

"THE RUSKIES!" He shouted as the idea came to him.

He turned to Dimitri and Grace.

"The Russians I helped! They have a colony nearby! We could take him there. They have a doctor and he's got lots of supplies!" He continued.

Midnight shrugged. "I wouldn't know. I usually try to avoid other bits of civilization; I was dragged in here." But, it seemed, someone else had come up with an idea, anyway. She shook her head. First her family, then Eli getting attacked, along with who knew how many. This wasn't safe anymore; something had to be done. But she certainly wasn't going to be the one to do it; she certainly couldn't do anything. She shook her head again. "What I want to know...is how they got in here. Sure, they killed the guards, but, if the only way to get to the power is inside the city...how did they manage that?" She glanced around; the crowd was still gathering. She stiffened. Didn't they have something better to do? She tried to ignore them. "Too many people..." she mumbled to herself.

"Da, I want to know how they got past us too. Either they tunneled in, or somebody let them in." The crowd god silent for a moment after Dimitri said somebody may have let them in. He continued talking. "But there's no sense standing around discussing. I'm going to go get one of the cargo trucks. We set out for the Russian colony before Noon." Dimitri said. He walked off towards the motor pool. The truck he was going for was a rather large military heavy cargo truck, the kind with numerous large solid tires, heavy metal armor and a canvased back with enough seats to hold a squadron of soldiers. Feran had three of them at the ready, and it was time to use them.

"You hear that, Eli? You're gonna be just fine" Whispered Gears, kneeling by the boy.

He knew he was out cold, but it made him feel better. Talking to him gave Gears hope.

Israel chased after Dimitri.

"Wait! I'm coming too, if that's okay?" He asked, catching up.

Grace jumped a bit when Gears yelled but nodded excitedly at what he said. Oh yes that sounded just perfect! They had another doctor as well! If Eli could just pull through until then maybe just maybe he'd be alright. However the question as to how the wasters got in dampened the new found hope. What if someone did let them in...who would do such a thing? Were those monsters smarter than they thought? "Going to the colony sounds just wonderful." She turned her attention back to Eli and the metal in his chest. "This goes against everything I should do as a doctor but I want this out. Hopefully it's not clamping a vessel shut but I have a feeling it isn't..I want it out but I'll need help. Gears if you would or find someone strong enough to pull it out. I'll use gauze and tape for a makeshift seal."

Dimitri looked over at Israel.. He was surprised Israel had wanted to come, even so, that he -asked- if it was alright. Dimitri nodded, "Fine by me," he replied, turning back towards the general direction of the truck depot. It wasn't far, maybe a hundred feet or so. He continued on towards the motor pool, then lifted open the thin aluminum covering over the entrance, which had failed to lift back up after the gas purged the Wasters from the city. He walked over to one of the large cargo trucks, opening the passenger side door and hopping up on in. He turned the key. It sputtered, but failed to start completely.

He turned it again, to the same result. "Come on you pile of junk, start.." he said to himself. He turned it once more, and the engine roared to life. It wasn't TOO loud, being that it had been modified to give both a gentler, and quieter ride. He checked the gas and oil gauges. They were both looking good. Finally, something started going right.

"I can't pull it out, but I'm sure that friend of yours could" He said, turning to Israel, who was about ten feet away talking to Dimitri. "Hey boy! Come here!" He called.

Israel trotted back over, and looked down at Eli.

"You got pull that chuck of metal out of his chest. My arms ain't strong enough anymore" He told him, point at the debris.

"What!? Just pull it out!?" He said shocked. "Grace?" He said, making sure the old man wasn't crazy.

She nodded her eyes focused where Eli was laying. "Normally you would leave it in but I can feel air leaking around the edges. It needs to come out so I can seal it. If it's clamping a vessel then...God I'll do what I can but with the air leaking in like I know it is his lungs will collapse without a seal. So yes pull it out." She prayed silently that this would go well and wiped her brow before spreading out everything she would use to quickly seal the sucking chest wound. "Whenever you're ready I am." If only she had proper tools with her to properly free the metal but at times you did what you had to.

Israel placed his hands around the metal and tighten his grip.

"1...2...3!" He shouted, and began pulling on the piece lodge inside the boy.

He struggled for a minute, it was in deep, but he finally wiggled it free.

Midnight winced when Israel pulled the metal out. She had to look away, unwilling to see where the shard had come out. So she stared a the ground instead, ignoring the scene. She looked up suddenly. "Oh, that's right. I don't know what it was, but Dud was bringing something here. It seemed like it was trying to help Eli out, but I have no idea what it's bringing here, or what we can do with it. Just thought it should be a warning..." Though she had no idea what Dud had thought would actually help at this point. She looked away again when her glance caught where the metal had been.

Dimitri shifted the truck into gear, and pulled out of the motor pool. He gave a wide turn onto the main road and drove it down towards where the group had been working on Eli, stopping a few feet away from the edge of the group. He got out and walked over. He didn't seem bothered by the grotesque operation scene, for he had seen much, much worse in soviet field hospitals. "Lay him in the back whenever you're done with him. There's plenty of room for any cargo we want to bring, and any people here. The cargo truck had separate compartments on the outer bottom edges which were rather large, and could contain plenty of supplies.
