The rules of this game are simple. It follows the same basic trend as Would You Rather, only instead of coming up with unpleasant circumstance after unpleasant circumstance, This Or That is based on comparisons between any two things you can think of. For example:
Jack: Black or white?
Jill: White. Cat or dog?
Jack: Dog. Up or down?
Etc. etc. etc.
Comparisons between two unrelated things aren't particularly recommended, but in the end it's whatever you want it to be. If you would like someone to choose between Cheerios and Mars, that's entirely your own choice. Individuals disregarding your comparison and coming up with a new one is entirely their own choice, too.
