"You wouldn't have done anything," Helena told him firmly. "You were just glad to see me, and that was it. You won't hurt me; I know you won't. I have faith in you, Gerard; don't worry about it so much, ok? It'll be all fine," She assured him. The more he thought like that, the easier it would be for him to leave, and that would kill her.

"Just relax, Gerard," She soothed. "And cheer up! We're having a baby! We should celebrate, not be afraid!" She said, delight finally taking over. She was so excited for this baby; she hoped Gerard would be too.

Gerard smiled at her as her face lit up; she looked so beautiful when she smiled like that.
He squeezed her hand gently, and his brow furrowed," I promise Helena...I will never hurt you." He said, his voice serious, promising not only to Helena; but to himself also.
And then he cupped her face in his hands gently, and kissed her soft lips.

Roughly two months had passed since Gerard's return, and the last time Helena had been this happy was when they had first started going out. It was hard at times for Gerard to control himself, but she was trying to help him through it as best she could; of course, the fact it was her that made him feel that way didn't really help, but she tried as hard as she could.

She had started to show by now, and though she was extremely excited for her baby, there was another fear that constantly haunted her. Gerard was a vampire; what if the person who'd turned him came back, and ruined everything, took him away from her? It didn't bear thinking about.

Even now, curled up in the living room of her flat with one of her favourite books, she was worried about it, her eyes continually flicking to Gerard, watching him for any sign he would leave her.

Gerard caught Helena's eye and smiled at her, "Can I help you with something?" He asked, his husky voice light, teasing- this was good for him, he was getting used to her now: Of course it would always be hard for him not to...well, not to hurt her, but he loved her too much to even think about that now.

"Just thinking. If this is a girl," She nudged her bump as she shifted in her chair, "I want to call her Taylor, or Alice. And if it's a boy, I think Jason would be a nice name. What d'you think?"

It was then that the phone rang. Jumping out of her chair, Helena snatched up the reciever.
"Hello?"
"..."
"Hello?"
"Sorry, sorry; is Gerard there?"
"Who's this?" Helena was instantly suspicious. Gerard didn't go out much, so how could someone get her phone number?
"It's an old friend from high school. I just need to ask him something,"

Reluctantly, Helena turned to Gerard, handing him the phone.
"No name; just someone who says they're from high school," She told him as she settled into the chair beside him, drawing her knees up and wrapping her arms around them.

Gerard took the phone cautiously, suspicious now- High school? That didn't sound right, he hated everyone at high school...
"Hello. This is Gerard." He spoke, his voice deep, a husky calm- yet it was underlayered with a coat of suspicion.

"Unless you want your pretty little girlfriend to get a clothes-hanger abortion and to be killed, you'll meet me outside in half an hour. I'll be around the corner from your flat. We'll have someone watching her as well; if you bring anyone, say goodbye to her,"

The line went dead, and Helena gave Gerard a strange look.
"Who was that? You didn't like anyone in high school except me and the guys. Who was that, and what'd they want?"

Gerard let to phone drop to his side and stared at it for a moment.
And then his face contorted into an expression of anger.
"Helena." He said urgently, putting his arms on her shoulders and looking at her face, his expression frantic, "Stay in the house, lock the doors, windows, just stay safe okay? It is very important that you listen to what I'm about to say..."
Gerard knew this would be stupid: they could have people watching him now, watching them- they would find a way in they were fucking vampires forn christ's sake!
But he had to try, half an hour. Half an hour to make her safe.

Helena grew panicked at Gerard's expression, and immediately leapt up, running to the windows and shutting them, pushing the locks down. She did the same to every room in the house, locking each door behind her. Running back into the front room, she turned the key in the lock, settling on the sofa beside Gerard, gripping his hands, scared out of her wits. Her baby was kicking out, showing it didn't appreciate the sudden movements, and Helena winced at it, but she was more focused on Gerard.

"Gerard, please, tell me," Helena said, white-faced with fear.

Outside their home, three vampires watched through the window from the shadows. A man and two girls.
"Ready, girls?" He asked, and they giggled. True, he still had twenty minutes, but it was nice to be in place beforehand.
"Tick, tock, tick, tock.."

Gerard frowned and then looked at Helena and back at the clock, he had 15 minutes...
"I'll eplain everything later, but for now, you just concentrate on staying safe." As he spoke he smiled but it was clear from the pain that showed in his eyes he was serious.
"I have to go...please, please stay safe okay...?" He looked at her, her hand still in his, never wanting to let go....
He leant forward and brushed his lips against hers almost desperately, "I love you," He murmured, before flashing out of the door and locking it behind him once more.
He would have to walk from here, humans were not accustomed to people hurtling around at 120 mph.

Helena watched Gerard leave, and she went and shut the curtains, curling up on the sofa, watching the shadows that passed, waiting for Gerard to return. She was bad enough when he went out somewhere normal, but this had her seriously spooked.

"He's coming!"
The two females slid into the shadows on either side of the male, and as soon as Gerard was hearing distance, they began to sing.
"Seems a downright shame.."
"Such an awful waste.."
"What a nice plump frame.."
"Whats-her-name has.."

"Shush girls. We don't need to spook our guest," Of course, that was exactly what they were trying to do. It was an indirect threat for Helena; if anything went bad here, they'd eat her. Literally.
"Sorry about that, they can't help singing songs from that Sweeney Todd film; they're just so addicting. Anyway; I believe I can help you,"

The man stepped out of the shadows, offering Gerard his hand.
"Damien. The girls are Loretta and Catrina," He grinned, showing his fangs, but there was a sinister glint in his butterscotch eyes. The brunette and redhead behind him did the same, the same glint in their eyes.
"What if we told you, that we could help you control your thirst? So that you wouldn't hurt your girlfriend, or hurt your baby?" Damien knew how to pull Gerard's strings, and he should; he'd created him. And if his spying hadn't misled him, he'd do anything to protect that human he craved, and the brat she was carrying. Damien didn't like children. He liked killing them best.

Gerard hesitated, unsure of whether or not Damien was being Genuine here, but the idea of being able to stay with Helena and their child forever,..with him being no threat to her...it was just so seducing.
They had caught him, he was hooked.
His voice was gruff when he replied," And in return...?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.
This could not be a one way thing- but what could they possibly want from him...?

"We call in a favour every now and then, but not too much. We're not bad guys," Damien lied, but he could tell Gerard didn't realise that.

"Now, d'you want to know the secret? Indulge your thirst. That's it. You've been denying it for long, it's unbelievable. The longer you prolong feeding, the closer you get to snapping around her. So it's simple. Feed, every two weeks or so, and you won't have a problem with controlling your thirst,"

It was a good thing that Gerard was so inexperianced in the ways of a vampire, because Damien wasn't helping him at all. He was setting Gerard up to kill his girlfriend himself. It wasn't all that easy to stop once you start drinking all the time. Eventually, you attack every human around you as the thirst grows near-constant. Once the girl was dead, they could bring him into the fold; he'd be a great asset to them.

Gerard stared at Damien coldly," You want me to murder people...?" His voice was low, rough; under strain as he struggled to fight with the two fighting parts of his mind: The one that recoiled away from the though, disgusted- and the one that embraced it with a warm bloody smile.

"Obviously you don't prey on innocents. We've got a list of people and their adresses; and we know for a fact they're not the nicest of people. We never kill innocents," Damien said, as if the very notion offended him.

"I'd advise you to go now and feed; we can tell it's hard for you to control yourself. If you ever need to see me, ask for me at House of Wolves, the club downtown,"

With that, Damien and the two females disappeared. Damien and the redhead headed back to thier club, but the brunette was sent to watch over Gerard's girlfriend. She'd report back when Gerard killed her.

Gerard was about to protest but he knew it was pointless.
He knew which side of him had won.
But...if it would help Helena, then wouldn't it be for the best...?
Gerard didn't know- but he did know that he had to get back to her first.

He reached the outside of the house and his sharp eyes flicked once, twice, three times around the building: searching for any sign of trouble.
And then he entered the house.
"Helena? It's me...Gee..."

Helena wanted to go flying straight at Gerard, but she knew that was dangerous, she went to him as slow as possible, so he could get used to her scent.

"Gerard?" She asked, approaching him slowly; but she couldn't help herself, and she threw herself into his arms. She wasn't going to admit she'd been afraid, because she wanted to seem stronger than she felt, but she couldn't help some of the fear showing in her face.

"Oh God, are you ok? Who was it? What did they want?" She asked, taking his face in her hands and pressing herself closer to him, feeling their baby kicking, probably in relief that he was ok, the same relief she felt.
