Tsukihana's Compositions ( )

Postby Zephyr on Mon Jan 31, 2011 1:01 am

I'll be posting my compositions here for your perusal.

Feedback is always appreciated, but please think before you post; I'm going to University for Music, and graduated from a High School with an intensive arts program as a Music Major. If your comment is going to be something as tedious as "I don't like the dissonance in bar 13" then don't bother posting anything at all. Also, please read the description of the song that I've posted with each.

Thanks.
~Tsuki

Hello yet again, haha. I seem to be following you all around the Creative Realm. :P

Just gave this a listen, and I really like it. I'm a sucker for sparse and pretty piano. The tension and release in the intro sort of gave me an idea of what the rest of the song was going to feel like .. and I was about right. I don't know if you could call it melancholy, but it starts off soft .. and then towards the middle seems to explode with resolve and determination.

Love it to bits and pieces. Digital pianos can be rather tedious to work with (at least, the ones I've dealt with!) so hopefully I'll get to hear a version recorded on a real piano. Let me know when that gets posted!

(:

Thanks for the compliments Vice! :D
There're a few things about the way the computer plays the song that bug me, but otherwise, it did a moderate job. :V
Also, I just posted a new song. :o

So, I promise I'm not stalking you (except could you please move your desk lamp a bit to the left? It's blocking the view) ... but I'm something of (read: totally) a music nerd, and I've been rifling through this music forum off and on today. Most of it is lyrics, which was a little disappointing :P

Anyway, I think - ironically or not - my favourite piece of yours is your high school production. Most of these use some rather low-quality recording methods - not your fault, naturally - so I was listening to them on a fundamental level rather than a pure enjoyment one. The basic principles are really solid for 'Aubrey' and 'Rejoice' both, and I think I'd put my lot in with Vice and would really love to hear 'Aubrey' recorded in actual piano, if you ever have the chance.
But 'Rejoice' was really awesome. 6/8! I love it! I have a composition in 7/8 that I created for the sole reason that mad-ass time sigs are fun :P But yeah. I like the syncopation, and I like what you DID with the staccato/legato play, but it felt too short, almost like you threw it in because you had to. I would have liked to hear more of it. And how nice of that shoddy program to interpret your sforzando as a hiccup and your fermatas as "did a fly land on the page?" :/ Way to ruin the most dramatic notation in music! Sheesh. At 67-70, did you blur the lines of the parts intentionally? It's kinda hard to tell the voices apart - aside from pitch, obviously - so I found it interesting how you had your viola low and your cello high. Is that supposed to be a cello? I didn't think 'vlc' stood for violin, though I'm unfamiliar with the specific shortform :P Well either way I liked how it sounded, intentional or no. And lastly, I love the subtlety of the single trill in the middle of a well-written, very high-mobility line... a subtlety which is completely defenestrated near the end of the piece when you throw in more glissandos than have any right to be seen together in one place for no reason whatsoever XD WOOHOO GLISSANDO PARTY! ... *ahem*

If you ever get your hands on a copy of some decent composition software, I would personally highly recommend you redux this song. And of course if you do, put it on youtube so I can hear it! :D

MUSIC NERDS, UNITE! *Brofists*

Anywho, I'd have to say I dislike Lament of Rejoice the most out of all of them. I wrote an amazing, completely orchestrated piece in high school as well, but I can't find it for the life of me. :/ Anywho, Lament is too non-sequitur for a contemporary classical piece. I lost interest in it about half way through, thus leading to its steady decline in quality.

Yes, the blurring of the lines was intentional... But there's no viola in the piece; it's meant to be played on a violin. And yeah, I know what you mean about the glissandos. :p The performers who played this piece for me [back in high school, as the version on Youtube is clearly digital instruments] didn't like me too much for that... :D

I like Aubrey a lot as well, but it is in need a bit of revision, and a bit of emotion, which my digital instruments cannot comprehend. Once I get my piano tuned, I'll upload a proper version. Same goes for the others.

P.S. I love the time signature of 13/8; I'm trying to compose a piece in said time, but it's proving to be difficult, simply because Finale hates me.

You're making these in Finale!? Good god, man! I'm sorry for you! If you have no objection against pirated software, I would suggest you look into something along the lines of Ableton Live or similar streamlined programs. If you hate pirating, I would not suggest buying it legit, though. These programs are made for serious professionals, not enthusiasts of any level. A licensed copy of the full program will set you back over a grand :/

But yes, I feel your pain when it comes to digital instrumentation. It can feel nice to get your ideas on "paper", but those tinny, metalic clunks are hardly drums, yannow?
One day if I'm not feeling lazy, I'll upload the 7/8 piece I did to youtube and send you a link. 13/8 sounds incredibly fun! What a headache to conduct tho XD you'd have to do, like, what, 5, 5, 3? which is more like 3, 2, 3, 2, 3... I guess it's not that bad since it's mostly just 3,2 but keeping track of the double 3s would made my head hurt. Might even be easier to just conduct that one in phrases... I had a teacher in High School (of all places!) who used to do that. It impressed me so much I begged her to teach me. I still can, in the non-complicated bits hehe. it's very difficult tho. Ambidexterity helps.

I like a lot of the elements behind Lament a lot more than the song itself. I very nearly went into post-secondary school for music, myself, but it takes a level of ridiculous dedication that I simply wasn't motivated enough to maintain. Still, my sister and I are both total music nerds - I'm classically trained, and she taught herself, so we're a really interesting mix. When we used to live together, she played bass and I would have my flute and my baritone, and we would jam for hours :) it was really sweet. I miss that.

Anyway if you upload any more I'd love to hear it :D Even some of the 'in-progress' stuff, if you're willing to share! I'd be happy to lend a trained ear, if you wish for assistance of any kind~

Yes, Finale does suck... It doesn't help that my version is completely outdated, either. I'd definitely consider getting Ableton if I ever have the money to do so, but I don't like to pirate music software. Other forms of software, I'm fine with...

The piece that I'm composing in 13/8 uses the pulses 3, 3, 3, 4. It's most certainly not as hectic as some of the methods you mentioned. :p

I like elements in Lament as well, but overall I feel I could've done a much better job.

I generally don't tend to upload unfinished songs, but I might shoot a midi file by you if you're ever around~

hello, let me first introduce myself. my name is Senzaryu Takayama (or at least that's the name I go by online for the most part), but almost everyone just calls me "Sen". I took four years of band in high school, and I played trombone within those four years, and not to mention the two and a half years of music in middle school (the half-a-year missing was when I played clarinet). I also play piano and guitar, but those are instruments that I play on my own time. so, in short, I am a music nerd as well. I don't have a chance to play much often anymore though T.T, but I listened to all five of your songs just now. They're not half bad, although, I'd have to disagree with you about "Lament of Rejoice", it was my favorite one out of all of them. to me, it seemed a little more composed than the rest (I don't know if it's just me on that note or not. it may also be my liking for the violin). Aubrey seemed pretty good, although the sudden burst of intensity there in the middle seemed to come out of nowhere and made me think "what did I just miss?". Don't take it the wrong way though, it was still enjoyable. I hope to hear more of your music in the near future though. Oh, and I do apologize for the rather dull introduction of myself, I thought it might explain a bit about myself and why I came up with my opinions.
