private rp between the writer's voice and partially-stars

ImageImagenew york city. the place that so many flock to in the hopes that their hopes and dreams will come true. be that those who go in search of love, of fame, of success in their chosen field, in pursuit of a dream... the city can wear them down after a while, but still the newest dreamers come, with their hopes and hearts on their sleeves, hoping that they will succeed above all else.

of course, it isn't just a city of dreamers. some chose to live there because it was the only place they could find work. some grew up there and never left. some fall somewhere between, those who long and who dream but know that the city isn't some magical place where dreams come true, despite what the movies attempt to convey.

but our heroes of the story tell themselves that they will be different, that the city will not wear them down. but it might not be the city that wears them down but their own hearts and emotions.

Georgie laughed as Viv said to make sure that she wasn't hungover whenever they arrived. They'd dealt with a severely hungover Georgie a couple of times, so she was pretty confident that a hungover Viv wouldn't be enough to turn them away. There was something about the thought of Viv meeting her dads that Georgie really liked, but that also made her nervous. She shoved that feeling aside. She only needed them to like her as one of Georgie's friends, because they weren't going to be anything else.

She sighed and ran a hand through her hair as Viv asked about her plans. "I've got a blog post I need to finish and get posted, and finish editing the video I'm posting on Tuesday, and... I'm pretty sure there's plenty more on my to-do list I need to get started on. Or finish. Or both," she said with a laugh. Her finger traced the edge of her coffee cup as Viv asked her about Hayley. "I... Yeah, I think so. Not today, I think my liver needs a day or two to recover. But... I've been out of the dating scene for so long for... so many different reasons, and I... I think it's time I started trying again, you know? So... I think I'm gonna text her and ask her out for dinner... maybe tomorrow night? Or is that too soon after... you know?" She asked. "Is it too like... eager? God, I really haven't done this in a while," she asked, laughing a little nervously. "I like her. I don't wanna ruin it before we even get a chance to see where it goes," she admitted, not really looking at Viv for fear it might just unsettle her, make her reconsider. There was a part of her that felt wrong about all this. But Hayley knew exactly the place Georgie was in, she knew she was trying to get over someone, and she was okay with that. It was easier to just ignore her feelings for Viv and move on.

Viv set down a plate of pancakes in front of Georgie, then set one beside her and made her way around the bar to sit on the same side as Georgie. She listened to Georgie’s plans, even when she started talking about Hayley. It hurt, listening to her talk about dinner plans with Hayley and how much she liked her. Viv kept the hurt to herself, focusing on eating the pancakes in front of her to stop from saying anything that could end badly. It didn’t stop her from thinking it, how she wanted Georgie to talk about her that way. Even hearing how she’d talked to her parents about Viv made her heart twist painfully.

l’m afraid I’ve been out of the ‘dating scene’ a bit too long myself. Just go with what your heart is telling you, G,” Viv tries to sound nonchalant as she says this, eyes glued to her pancakes so her eyes wouldn’t deceive her words. She needed to let Georgie move on, and she didn’t even know how to break things off with Ray. She hadn’t talked to him since the night before, and she would eventually have to talk to him. ”I figure I should go down to the restaurant and talk to Ray. After what happened last night, I-“

The was a knock at the door, interrupting Viv’s words. She ran a hand through her hair to tame some of the mess, and went to answer the door. Surprisingly, the very person she had just mentioned was at her door. ”I thought you had a shift at the restaurant, Ray,” Viv grumbled, folding her arms over her chest as she leaned on the door frame. She glanced over to Georgie for a moment, then back at him before sighing loudly at him. She grabbed her coat, turning to Georgie completely this time. ”Hey G, I’ll be out, okay? Don’t stay out too late with Hayley, if that’s what you decide,” Viv calls to her roommate, a glimmer of her normal smile showing before she left with Ray.

Georgie found herself watching her roommate as Viv told her just to listen to her heart about it. She didn't know what her heart wanted. She liked Hayley, and last night had been a lot of fun. And she knew she needed to get over Viv. But part of her didn't want to. It was the same part of her that read into every single moment they had together, that read into Viv not fully meeting Georgie's eyes.

But the mention of Ray and his arrival just snapped her back to reality. She couldn't dwell on those thoughts. Viv and Ray were still together, and that was all that mattered. Georgie didn't even try and force a smile as her and Ray locked eyes for just a moment. There seemed to be more animosity than usual in his eyes, and she just raised an eyebrow, ever so slightly, as the door shut behind them.

She tried to get some work done, but her mind kept drifting back to that morning and to Ray. She wondered if Ray had an issue with her and Hayley, or if it was just Ray being Ray. She kept wondering what she should do about Hayley. She kept getting stuck on Viv and not wanting to move on. But, eventually, she decided to just text Hayley and ask her to dinner. She needed to get over Viv, she reminded herself, one way or another. And Hayley knew that Georgie was trying to get over someone else, so everyone's feelings were out in the open. She was cool, she was funny, and she was hot. So Georgie texted her, asking her out for dinner.

She wasn't sure if Viv and Ray were back by the time she was ready to leave, so she just scribbled a note and left it on the counter to say she was gone out and would probably be late back. Dinner was nice, a welcome distraction from her day and from the thoughts that kept buzzing around her head. She ended up going home with Hayley, the warmth of the wine they'd had with dinner still buzzing through her system, managing to actually forget about Viv and Ray for a few hours.

Viv and Ray smoothed things out, but it was like they always did. Ray used the excuse that they both had too much to drink and he was just insecure. He also pushed that insecurity onto her, saying if Viv had spent more time with him, he wouldn’t have drank as much and felt so insecure. That blame was extended to their coworkers, who apparently had teased him about Viv’s attention to her dance friends and, more specifically, Georgie. It was a losing battle and Viv knew he wouldn’t see it from her side. There was a moment, when Ray was pushing all of the blame off of himself in a poor excuse of an apology, that she considered breaking it off. But then she remembered how George was pursuing Hayley now, and she would take being with Ray over being alone.

When they came back to the apartment, Georgie was gone, and had left a little note explaining that she had gone out and would be out late. Viv figured that she had decided to take Hayley out on a date, and she was thankful at least that she patched things up with Ray because her chances with Georgie were over before she could really process her thoughts that she’d been pushing down for so long. Viv decided in that moment to push those feelings away again, and focus on her boyfriend instead of her roommate.

There was an awkwardness in the air whenever Viv and Georgie were alone for the next week or so, and Viv couldn’t tell if she was alone in that feeling or if Georgie felt it too. Viv wanted their friendship to be normal again, especially with Georgie’s fathers coming in, but Viv couldn’t shake the odd feeling. She pictured Hayley anytime she and Georgie were alone. She tried not to ask about the other girl, but she also wanted to be a good friend to Georgie and support her. Ray had spent more time at the apartment the few days following the party, but dwindled back into their usual routine quickly. Viv threw herself into her dance practice and shifts at the restaurant, giving her little time for Ray or Georgie and reducing the confusing feelings she was bombarded with.

Then came the day Georgie’s fathers were coming. Viv felt surprisingly nervous to meet them, mainly because Viv had told them about her and she wanted to meet what were surely high expectations. She made sure Ray was busy for the day, as she didn’t want him making Georgie’s fathers feel uncomfortable in any way. She still remembered when her own parents met Ray, and she didn’t want a repeat of that; him not being a girl was better for them, but he was his normal abrasive self and the meeting was shortly before they both left for New York. Viv had prepared a meal for them, surely they were hungry after the long trip, but now that it was done, all she had to do was wait and that left her open to a thousand thoughts and mindless pacing.

The awkwardness definitely hadn't escaped Georgie. She'd noticed that Viv was spending less and less time in the apartment, always busy doing something else. Georgie really didn't understand it. She'd thought that things had been fine that morning. The little time Georgie and Viv did have alone together was as fun as it ever had been, but there was less of it, and there was always that undercurrent of tension.

She and Hayley were still keeping it casual. It didn't feel right to pretend it was a normal relationship when it wasn't, and they both knew that. So they didn't turn it into a big Thing, and just tried to have fun. Spending time with Hayley was definitely a good distraction, but Georgie wasn't convinced that it was helping her get over Viv either. Viv being weird was just making things worse for Georgie.

And then to top it off, the company had just begun pitching for a major contract, and apparently the pitch was going to be very content heavy. Which just increased Georgie's workload and added onto the stress. Georgie had always been able to handle intense situations, but this was starting to get to even her. Viv had agreed to cook dinner for them, and for that, Georgie was eternally grateful. It was one less thing for her to worry about as she drove to the airport. She was glad that Viv hadn't backed out of meeting them. Georgie's feelings for Viv aside, Georgie just wanted her family to meet her friends and show that she was doing just fine for herself.

A little bit of the stress melted away as Georgie got their usual bear hugs in the arrivals hall of the airport, but it still only took them as long as it took them to get their bags loaded into the car and to get out of the car park before they asked her what was bothering her. She just said work, which wasn't strictly a lie.

She opened the door to the apartment and grinned, inhaling the wonderful smell of Viv's cooking. If it tasted half as good as it smells, it wasn't going to disappoint.

"We're back!" She called, leading them into the kitchen. "David, Jay, this is Viv, who has absolutely saved my life by cooking dinner this evening," she said, introducing the two of them in turn. "Lovely to meet you, Vivian. This all looks and smells wonderful!" David said.

Viv tidied up around the apartment to waste some more time, but she and Georgie had already made the apartment spotless so there wasn’t much to take up her time. She was trying to find anything that would keep her mind from wandering, almost tempted to take a smoke break but she didn’t want to smell like smoke when Georgie’s fathers were over. She wanted to make a good impression, even as Georgie’s friend. She was also curious to meet them; she’d asked about them when Georgie had mentioned them coming to get an idea of who she’d be meeting.

She lit up as she heard the doorknob turn and Georgie brought her fathers in. Viv pressed down her clothes before they came into the kitchen, smiling brightly and offering casual hugs to both of Georgie’s fathers, Jay and David. ”It’s nice to meet you both, Georgie’s told me how great y’all are and she did not tell me wrong,” Viv teases with a giggle, offering them all some lemonade she made earlier this morning and pulled the casserole from where it was staying warm in the oven.

”Georgie, it was nothing, you know I’d do anything for ya,” Viv adds with a smile when Georgie mentions how Viv ‘saved her life’. She realizes that her words may have come off a bit too strong, and turns her attention away from her roommate to the food. She didn’t want to give Georgie’s fathers the wrong impression, and she was still hiding her feelings for Georgie from the girl herself, so she was determined to keep everything casual while Georgie’s fathers were here. She also wanted to make a good impression, she wanted them to like her, even if she was just Georgie’s roommate.

”The Southern woman in me couldn’t resist making something for you. I hope it’s good after your long flight,” Viv comments with a little chuckle, taking her apron off once the food was out of the oven. She wanted to look presentable but she tended to get messy in the kitchen, so the apron was messy and she took the teasing from Ray whenever he saw it.

Georgie grinned as Viv said she'd do anything for her, ignoring all of the emotions that a comment like that evoked in her. She accepted the glass of lemonade and took a long sip from it. Her phone buzzed with a text, and she grinned a little to herself as she saw it was from Hayley, asking her if she wanted to go for a few drinks. She fired off a reply, saying she was having dinner with her family and Viv so she couldn't do tonight, before shoving the phone back into her pocket and taking a seat at the table.

"This all looks and smells fantastic, Viv, thank you so much. So, Georgie tells us you're a dancer," David said as he took a seat beside Georgie. "That's wonderful, I think dance was about the only thing Georgie never really took to. She wasn't the most coordinated of children," he added playfully, and Georgie rolled her eyes. "Great, you're here for a full five minutes and the embarrassing childhood stories are already coming out," she said, but in reality, she liked that Viv had made such a good first impression and that they already seemed to like her.

Viv's food certainly didn't disappoint, and the conversation flowed easily, with plenty of embarrassing childhood tales being told. But it was the perfect distraction from everything that was stressing Georgie out, and by the time they finished eating, Georgie was feeling incredibly relaxed and warm. So when her phone rang and she saw it was Hayley, she just raised an eyebrow in curiosity. "Sorry, I should probably get this," she said, heading into her bedroom as she answered the call.

"Hey. Everything okay?" She asked.
"Fine. Sorry, I'm not interrupting dinner or anything, am I?" Hayley asked, but there was an undeniable edge to her voice.
"No, we've just finished. What's up?"
"Why didn't you tell me your dads were coming to town?"
"I thought I did? Sorry, Hayley, my head has been so fried with work-"
"And why is Viv meeting them?" The cutting tone to Hayley's voice almost made Georgie wince.
"Because she's my roommate and one of my best friends? Hayley, I didn't mention dinner with them to you because I didn't want to make a big deal over us or anything," she said, instinctively lowering her voice. "They wanted to come over for dinner and Viv offered to cook-"
"I'm done." The two words made Georgie freeze, frowning.
"What?"
"I don't even think you're actually trying to get over her. I was fine with this, but for fuck's sake, Georgie, she's meeting your parents?"
"As a friend, Hayley-"
"Yeah, you keep saying that, but I don't think you're convincing either of us."
"You knew what you were getting into when we started this. It was your fucking idea, Hayley."
"Yeah, and now I'm seeing what a dumb fucking idea it was. So I'm done. I can't do this any more. I don't want to do this any more. So I'm done. We're done."
"Hayley, can we talk about this tomorrow? You sound like you're drunk-"
"I am and I don't care. I should have done this sooner. I don't want you to call me or text me. Bye, Georgie."

The call ended abruptly, and Georgie found herself just staring at her phone. She didn't know how to feel or what she was even supposed to feel. Anger, hurt, sadness, but... a tiny bit of relief too, which was the messed up part. She could feel tears burning behind her eyes, but she blinked them away, wiping her face to make sure her mascara hadn't run. She wasn't going to let this ruin seeing her family for the first time in six months, she told herself. They hadn't known about Hayley, they didn't need to know about this either, she told herself. She fixed a smile back on her face and went back out to join the others. "Right, what awful stories were you telling Vivian about me in my absence? The green hair incident?" She asked, possibly a little too brightly, as she took a seat back at the table.

Talking to Georgie’s dads was a breath of fresh air. The way they chatted with her about things that Georgie told them about her, and the banter between them and Georgie, it was all so easy. Viv never really remembered having a conversation like this with her family, except for a few times with her brothers. Most of the attention spent on her was the disappointment she brought to the family for not being in church enough, for being too involved in a ‘silly activity’, for liking girls-

”Well Georgie has her own talents. I could never be as tech savvy as she is, I’m honestly envious,” Viv answered Georgie’s dad David, chuckling at his light hearted jab towards Georgie. Viv knew a little about Georgie’s dads from what she was told, but it was nice to meet them; though a part of her wondered why Hayley wasn’t here instead. Maybe it was too soon for something like that, and the same part of herself was feeling… victorious in a way, that she was here with Georgie’s dads and they’d heard all about her. It gave her a sense that maybe Georgie would like her back.

The dinner was spent talking about her dancing and brief life in New York, and Viv’s endless questions about Georgie’s family and hearing more about them. She barely noticed Georgie step away until she was back and mentioning a green hair incident. ”Oh I have to hear about this, Georgie with green hair?” Viv tried to keep the conversation casual since it was clear Georgie was trying to do the same. But Viv could tell something from her phone call was bothering her. She wouldn’t be the one to mention it, but she did give her dads a chance to talk alone. ”I think this story is best heard over a slice of pie. Why don’t I get some for everyone?” Viv excused herself to kitchen, giving them a chance to be alone and to give herself a breather.

This whole evening, while one of the best Viv has had in some time, made her even more confused. She wanted to believe she could accept Georgie moving on, and repairing her relationship with Ray, but she was still troubled by the feelings she had. Before the party, she’d pushed them away completely and convinced herself she didn’t have romantic feelings for Georgie. But when she was heavily drunk and Ray outed her feelings- and her sexuality in general -to the party, she was forced to face the truth: she still liked girls, and liked Georgie more than as a roommate and friend. The same Georgie who she saw kissing her coworker and oblivious to the fact that Viv had been outed to the whole party.

Thankfully her teammates had been supportive, making a believable food poisoning story for their dance instructors when Viv didn’t come into practice the day after the party. But at the restaurant, Viv felt highly aware of the stares she was getting, and ever since the party, talking with Ray has felt like waiting for the end. A new part of herself was awakening, and it was all because of Georgie, who didn’t even know Viv liked girls, let alone that Viv liked her. With a sigh, Viv brushed through her hair and pushed all the negative thoughts away, determined to enjoy the rest of the evening and not ruin Georgie’s night with her dads.

Her family had always been able to read her like a book, so the minute Viv stepped out of the room, she could feel her dads' concerned gaze honing in on her. She sighed. It was easier just to tell them there and then. "There was a girl in work that I liked. We... we'd gone on a few dates and... we'd agreed it would just be casual. But she just... ended it." She said quietly, softly enough that she hoped Viv wouldn't overhear. She'd tell Viv herself, she didn't want her to find out just by overhearing. "And... it's a complicated situation," she admitted. When they pulled her in for a hug, she didn't resist, having to fight back the tears as she realised how much she'd missed having them around and as the emotions she'd been trying to fight back rose to the surface.

"Oh, sweetheart," David said. "Do you want to go out to dinner tomorrow, just the three of us, and you can talk about it more if you want? Or not, we can just have a nice meal," he said. Georgie nodded, quickly wiping her eyes again.
"Yeah, that sounds... that sounds great. I'm gonna go see where Viv is with that pie, I definitely need some to make me feel better," she said, getting to her feet and following Viv out to the kitchen. She didn't want to think about what this meant for them now. The whole idea was that she was supposed to get over Viv, and now she didn't know how she was supposed to feel. She felt like she was back at square one, except now she also had the anger and the sadness of what had happened with Hayley.

"Hey, do you need a hand with anything?" She asked as she went into the kitchen. "I forgot you'd made pie too, that was a welcome surprise," she laughed.

Viv was lost in her thoughts, mainly giving Georgie some time to talk to her dads if she needed to, and jumped a little when Georgie appeared in the kitchen and asked if she needed help with anything. ”Oh, sorry, I think I got it. Sometimes my head wanders off and I have a hard time reeling it back in,” Viv answers with a small chuckle, slicing up pieces of pie for them all. She handed two of the plates to Georgie and started getting the more plates ready.

”You know cooking is one of my happy places,” Viv teases at Georgie’s mention of the pie, shrugging off any thanks, ”I have to impress your dads so they’ll adopt me, remember?” Viv adds with a laugh, trying to cheer Georgie up even if just a little bit. She grinned at her roommate before moving back into the living room, offering the pies up to Georgie’s dads. The night flew by, chatting about their lives and reminiscing about childhood stories. Viv felt more at home in New York with her roommate and her two dads than she ever felt at home in Mississippi with her biological family, and it gave her a sense of comfort in herself that she never really felt before.

It was only when the stars were high in the sky that Georgie’s dads finally made an exit. Viv truly enjoyed spending time with Georgie’s dads, but wanted some time alone to repair her friendship with Georgie. And if she could find out what was bothering Georgie, that would be a bonus. But she couldn’t handle the awkwardness anymore, and more than anything, just wanted to be normal with her friend again. Viv immediately grabbed one of their bigger bottles of wine and pulled off the cork, pouring two big glasses for the of them. ”Time for us to have some Viv and G time we‘ve been needing,” Viv says with a laugh, shoving the wine glass in Georgie’s hand before she can say no.

Viv makes herself comfortable on the couch, taking a long sip of her wine and settling in. ”I like your dads, G,” Viv starts, smiling at the thought of the two men. They were so interested in Viv, and made her feel like she was their own daughter. ”I didn’t think they’d be so interested in me. I mean, to be fair, I’m not used to parents that want to do more than lecture me, so it’s nice,” Viv says with another chuckle, taking another long sip from her glass.

The rest of the evening went well, even if her conversation with Hayley weighed heavily on her mind the whole time. She didn't know how to feel about it, and she didn't particularly want to think too much about it either. So she just tried to enjoy spending time with her family and with Viv. It was late by the time her dads left, and Georgie was honestly ready to just go straight to bed and have some time to herself to think. But then Viv was pushing a glass of wine into her hand, and Georgie just laugh and sat down on the other end of the couch from Viv.

"Yeah, they're... pretty great. Our family was one of those families where it was always chaotic, always kids running around the place, but we grew up happy, healthy, and knowing we were loved. They didn't have the time or the energy to just lecture us about shit," she said with a laugh, taking a long sip of her wine. She hadn't fully appreciated how lucky she'd been until she moved out. "They've probably already adopted you in their head, by the way. Expect a Christmas present from them this year," she added.

She leaned back in the chair a little and took another mouthful from the glass in her hand. It really had been too long since they'd done something like this, and she'd missed it. But it seemed like Viv was always spending time with Ray or Georgie had been spending time with Hayley, and they'd hardly seen each other. Mentally, Georgie just wanted to say that was why things had been so weird between them for a while. They just hadn't spent any proper time together for a while. But even though it was diminished after the dinner, Georgie could still feel that awkwardness lingering, deep down below the surface, a tension that she still couldn't explain or figure out. It was that that stopped her from just blurting out about Hayley, and instead she just took yet another drink.

Viv let herself settle into her glass of wine, eager to feel the relaxation that a few glasses of wine could give her. Now that it was just the two of them, Viv realized just how little they had been spending time together. Honestly, she’d forgotten how nice it was to just be the two of them after a long day. Viv was in a good mood from being around Georgie’s parents, and chuckled at Georgie’s comment of being adopted by her family. ”Well, tell them I need new dance shoes for Christmas,” Viv teases, taking another long sip from her glass and enjoying Georgie’s company more. After all the stress from Ray and the party, this was the first time that they truly had alone time together.

Viv thought about Georgie’s comment about how happy and busy her family was. It was something she never really experienced with her family. Sure, they had happy moments, but overall Viv was never truly happy. She realized being here in New York, and having Georgie, she was the happiest she’d ever been. ”I’m glad we got this time to spend together. I feel like we’ve both been so busy lately it was nice to just slow down and enjoy the evening with your fathers,” Viv adds as she finishes off her glass, laying back against the couch with a sigh.

She wondered what was bothering Georgie so much. Viv could tell that something was going on, but she didn’t want to pry too much and risk upsetting Georgie, especially after having such a good time with her parents tonight. As Viv refilled her glass, she felt a boost of courage to be a bit more sentimental than she would usually be and added as more of an afterthought, ”I’m sorry if I’ve been distant. I’ve really missed spending time with you, G.” Viv took a long sip of her glass afterward, trying to keep a blush off of her face. She was being honest with Georgie, and honest with herself. Viv wanted to push further, figure out what was going on, but she wasn’t sure how far she could push anymore with Hayley in the picture. She wanted to respect their relationship, and also wanted to figure out how she truly felt about Georgie, so the crush she was harboring picked the worst time to bubble back up to the surface.

Georgie laughed as Viv said that she needed new dance shoes. "Noted, I'll let them know," she joked. Viv's comment about them spending time together caught her a little off guard, but she smiled. It was nice to spend time together again, no Hayley, no Ray, no pressure, just the two of them and a bottle of wine. For a moment, she caught herself wondering what Hayley would have thought, before she caught herself and reminded herself that it didn't matter any more.

"Yeah, I've missed it too. But life happens sometimes, right?" She said, shooting Viv a smile as she leaned over to pour another glass of wine. She stared out the window for a few seconds. Viv was her best friend and she didn't get why it was so hard to just talk about the phone call. God knows, only a few weeks ago, they would have told each other everything. There had been a distance wedged between them, and Georgie wasn't sure it was either of their fault. So she sighed, taking another mouthful of her wine. Somebody had to bridge that distance.

"Me and Hayley are finished. She rang me during dinner and ended it. Turns out we just wanted different things, I guess," she said. Once she'd started talking about it, it was hard not to keep talking. "We said we were just gonna keep it casual, but I guess that... wasn't what she really wanted? And... I don't really get that. And it was just completely out of the blue and I don't know if... if it was something I did or not." She said. It felt good to get it off her chest and to finally be talking to Viv like this again, exactly as they always had been.

Viv wasn’t thinking about Ray, or really Hayley either, just this moment with Georgie. They had spent a lot of time together at first trying to get to know each other, and she really missed it. Her mind wouldn’t get off of how wonderful Georgie’s parents were, and it made her think of what her father might be doing. Sometimes, when she was really lonely, they would have a quick chat. It was always short, because as soon as he would mention her trying to come home at least for him, Viv would always make an excuse to end the call. But part of her wondered what he would think of Georgie. Viv didn’t think she would ever get the courage to face her mom again, but it was almost nice to think of seeing her father or her brothers again, if only for a day or two.

Georgie’s admission of what happened with Hayley caught her by surprise, making her set her drink down and turn fully to Georgie. “I’m sure it was nothing you did, G,” Viv replies, trying to make Georgie feel better more than anything. It made sense why Georgie had gotten a bit tense after taking that call during dinner. Viv wanted nothing more than to make Georgie feel better, even though part of her was happy that Hayley that ended things. She felt bad for feeling like that, because it didn’t make Georgie feel good and nothing changed for Viv. She wasn’t really trying to figure out her feelings for Georgie, she had accepted they were there and then pushed them back in knowing that Georgie and Hayley were casually dating.

”Hey, why don’t we throw another party soon? With the holidays coming up, we can invite whoever we want and have a good time again,” Viv offers, feeling the wine a bit more and pouring another glass now that she’s already drinking. She was already planning it in her head, even though Georgie hadn’t given her a proper answer yet. ”I think it’d be so fun. We can dress up and get lots of champagne,” Viv adds with an excited grin. She was determined this time to spend a lot of time with Georgie and make sure that they could enjoy the party together.

It felt good to have everything out in the open and to be properly talking to Viv like this again. Even despite the conflicting and confusing emotions, everything felt a little more stable and a little easier to deal with now she was talking about it with Viv. She managed a smile as Viv said she was sure that it wasn't her fault.

The idea of a party took her aback, and she raised an eyebrow at the suggestion. She'd been on nights out with Hayley, but they weren't the same as the parties she and Viv had thrown in the apartment. The parties were always more fun and more familiar. And the temptation of getting properly dressed up was too tempting.

"You had me at getting to dress up. I've got a pair of heels I've been dying for an excuse to wear. We should make into a full fancy Christmas thing. Everyone wears nice dresses and suits, we can get in fancy hors d'oeuvres and canapes and desserts and everything. Or, you could show off some of your amazing cooking again and make them," she said, looking over with a grin.

"This is going to be so damn fun. God, the last time I got dressed up all fancy must have been senior prom. You've got to promise me you're going to break out the fancy dresses too because if I end up crazy over-dressed, I'm coming back out in my pyjamas," she joked.

Time seemed to pass by so fast and suddenly the night of the party was only hours away. It was hard to believe the holidays had come so quickly and it was time for their party. She was looking forward to it, especially considering it wouldn’t be as big as the other party they held. She allowed Ray to invite a few of their close friends from the restaurant that she actually liked to be around, and only a few girls from the dance team that she basically considered sisters. She wanted as little distraction as possible so that she could enjoy some quality time with Georgie.

She made sure to dress up how Georgie had wanted, even finding a cute longer wig to go with the short dress she found. Viv knew that Georgie would be dressed to the nines and she wanted to be equally as impressive with her own look. Plus, she had given herself plenty of time to get the hors d’oeuvres ready and plated for their guests. She’d left Ray to get the drinks for them tonight, asking for more classy champagne and wine rather than a keg. What she didn’t ask for was for him to bring the restaurant crew with him early, and the girl Kelsey was with them, who they didn’t agree on inviting to the small party. And holding a big bottle of whiskey.

”Well you guys are certainly very early, I hardly have the food out!” Viv puts on her polite voice and giggles, but the moment she turns to pull more food out of the fridge, the fake smile dropped. She wanted this to be different from the other party, but obviously Ray was playing by his own rules. He swayed up to her, already smelling a bit like alcohol. ”I hope you didn’t drive here smelling like that,” Viv says in a lower tone, her voice dripping with venom. He rolls his eyes, leaning in and kissing her on the forehead. ”Relax babe, Kelsey drove us all over here. I just had to make sure the champagne and wine was good enough for your little holiday party,” Ray says very loudly, turning to the others who were each holding a variety of champagne and wine.

Viv greeted them all with warmth except Kelsey, who still received a polite greeting but she was not happy about her being here. After, she immediately headed over for Georgie’s door and knocked gently before opening the door cautiously. ”Hey G, Ray brought the restaurant crew over early,” Viv wanted to continue but music started up from the living room, interrupting her. She groaned, leaning against the doorway. ”Sorry. You look amazing though! I didn’t expect any less from you,” Viv adds, looking over Georgie’s outfit with a big grin.

The run up to Christmas was always a busy time for Georgie, but she loved it. She adored Christmas and everything that came with it. She was recording and posting videos every day, and had been hitting up every Christmas market she could find in search of Christmas presents and unusual finds. Her current plans were to stay in New York for Christmas, but it hadn't stopped her dads trying to convince her to come home. She loved Christmas with her family; it was always sheer chaos and a little rough and ready, but it was perfect to them. But she wanted to try Christmas by herself just once. Flights home were expensive and driving would have taken days, which was her primary excuse.

The party had just added another layer of excitement for Georgie. She had spent her morning decorating the apartment and vlogging the whole thing, before letting Viv have the kitchen to herself to get the food ready. Georgie spent the afternoon editing videos and recording a video getting ready for the party and discussing party safety tips. She'd just finished up as she heard voices enter the apartment. She frowned as she glanced at her phone. She knew that Ray was supposed to be coming early to help Viv finish setting up, but they weren't expecting anyone else for another little while. She finished up her makeup, touching up her lipstick, as Viv knocked gently on the door and let herself in. By the sounds of it, things were already getting rowdy out in the main room. She sighed as Viv explained the situation, but smiled as Viv complimented her outfit.

“Thank you,” she said, getting to her feet and twirling. “And don’t worry about it. You want me to come out and help finish setting up or anything?” She asked. “Or do you just wanna hide in here with me for a little bit?” She asked, raising an eyebrow.

There was one thing Viv always loved about Georgie, and it was her nonchalance when things didn’t go exactly to plan. Sure, she was probably not too happy about the early party guests either, but she handled it better than Viv tried to. It was something in her nature that just made her so easy to get along with, and Viv got lucky that this was the random roommate she was set up with when she came to New York. Georgie brought out a side of Viv that she had lost running away to New York.

Viv laughed at Georgie’s comment that she was hiding away from their party guests. ”Was it that obvious? You know me too well,” Viv responded with a laugh, walking over to sit on Georgie’s bed. A little bit of time away from the rowdy members of the restaurant crew would be good for her to get through the rest of the party. ”I told Ray that I didn’t want everyone from the restaurant coming, and I thought we were on the same page. But that girl Kelsey is here, and I don’t really like her so I didn’t invite her.” Viv admitted with a sigh, thinking about how uncomfortably close that she was with Ray, considering he was still in a relationship with Viv.

”Whatever. This party is about us and celebrating our friendship during the holidays. No need for stupid boys, right?” Viv says with a laugh, standing up from the bed and making her way to face the party. She made sure to grab a glass of wine as soon as she was in the kitchen, grabbing one for Georgie as well once she made her grand entrance. Ray was distracted enough by his buddies that Viv shouldn’t have to worry about him for the night. She made it clear that this party she was going to hang out with her roommate and her friends, and they weren’t going to have another blow up. The compromise was inviting enough of the restaurant crew that Ray wouldn’t be bored in the corner of the party.

Georgie just smiled as Viv admitted to wanting to hide for a little bit and took a seat on her bed. Georgie swiveled around on her bed to face her. She loved the party, she loved the atmosphere, but she also loved this part of it too and would have been happy to stay here all evening. The gossip, the beginnings of the buzz, liaising over outfits and the feeling of anticipation. But the minute Viv mentioned Ray, Georgie just rolled her eyes. "Seriously?" She asked, shaking her head. She wasn't one for encouraging girls to be suspicious of every single woman who hung around her boyfriend, but she also trusted Viv's intuition on that matter. As Viv stood up and declared that the party was about them, not stupid boys, Georgie laughed. "Amen to that!" She called.

As she was left alone in the room she checked her phone. A handful of people she knew were also coming, people she knew from work and from her time as a vlogger. Someone had double checked that it was okay to bring their partner, even though Georgie had checked with Viv and okayed it weeks ago. How different it was from Ray, it seemed. It seemed that everyone else was nearly there, so Georgie shoved her feet into her boots and headed out into the living room. A handful of people from the restaurant said hi or waved as she made her way towards the kitchen. Ray shot her a death glare, and Georgie smiled back. She stepped into the kitchen. "This mine?" She asked, indicating the second of two glasses of wine.

"Jamie and the others are going to be here in a bit. And don't worry, nobody else seems to be bringing any unexpected plus ones, so we should be good. Anything else I can help with?" She asked, leaning against the counter and taking a mouthful of the glass of wine.

Viv was never a jealous person, at least, she never considered herself to be. When Ray was around other girls, they never really bothered her. Unless they were hanging off of him or actively flirting with him, they weren’t worth her time. In fact, the only jealousy she had felt recently was when Georgie was with that girl Hayley, but she had put those feelings to bed. The only thing that bothered her about this Kelsey girl was how much attention Ray gave to her. She wasn’t outwardly flirty and in different circumstances she would be friends with the girl, but her boyfriend was too interested in Kelsey. Thankfully, Georgie raised her spirits, and they were going to have a good time tonight. That was the whole reason for this party, for her and Georgie to have a good time.

Viv always enjoyed who Georgie brought too. She easily fell into conversations with Georgie’s friends and they seemed to like her enough. She was glad Georgie finally made her appearance, grinning and sliding the wine glass over for her. ”Everything’s set up. The only thing you can help me with now is having a good time,” Viv answers Georgie’s request to help, taking a long sip of her wine. She was determined to have a good time tonight with her friend. There would be no screaming match like last time, she would just ignore Ray if he tried to start anything again. Much to her chagrin, he didn’t pay her much attention, other than glaring at Georgie as she joined the party. ”Do you like the wine? It’s one of my favorites from the restaurant,” Viv asks Georgie, eager to offer her whatever she wanted. There were a few other wine bottles available that they brought from the restaurant, since it was supposed to be a small party.

It was a nice get together. Different from their party a few months ago, it was just close friends and a few plus-ones. Viv focused her time on Georgie, talking to her friends and catching up with her. They’d done a lot of catching up after the visit with Georgie’s dad, and she wanted to get back to that feeling of being close with Georgie again. The Hayley situation had made them almost strangers for a few weeks, and Viv was determined not to let that happen again. They did start up some party music after everyone was a few drinks in, and Viv eagerly pulled Georgie out to the small group of people already dancing out in their living room where they cleared some space.

Big parties were fun, but it was hard to beat smaller, intimate parties like this. Here, she could actually talk to people, catch up with the few people she remembered from the restaurant. And then, once everyone had caught up and had a few drinks, somebody switched on their speaker and Viv was pulling Georgie out to the middle of the floor.

Georgie was no dancer, certainly nowhere near Viv's level, but that didn't matter. She could just fool around with Viv and laugh at herself, and nobody cared, because everyone was doing exactly the same thing. Georgie didn't think they'd had this much fun at a party for a while. The last party had been bigger, messier, and while it had been fun, it had been tainted. But this was just them having a good time with their friends and having fun.

They danced for a few songs, before Georgie laughed and flicked her hair out of her face. "I'll be right back, just gonna grab drinks!" She called over the music. "You stay dancing, you're too good at it to stop," she teased as she walked away. As she went back into the kitchen, she caught sight of two figures at the edge of the party, slipping away practically into the shadows. Against her better judgement, she followed them, a bad feeling starting to creep in. And sure enough, the bad feeling was confirmed. It was Ray and the girl from the restaurant, the one that Viv had said she'd had a bad feeling about.

Georgie turned and headed back into the party, storming onto the dance floor and grabbing Viv's arm. "We need to talk," she said, as quietly as she could while also making sure Viv would hear her. She let go of Viv's arm but gave her a look, telling her to follow Georgie. Georgie made her way out onto the balcony, wrapping her arms around herself as she hit the cold air. Perhaps the balcony hadn't been the best idea, but it was the only place they could talk without being overheard without running the risk of running into Ray and Kelsey. Viv deserved some sort of head's up instead of finding out like that.

Viv was enjoying herself more than the last party. She didn’t have to worry about Ray, he was plenty occupied with the restaurant crew, and she even managed to get Georgie out of the dance floor. It was nice to have only their close friends there this time, and she didn’t have to worry about her guests ruining the place with whoever Ray decided to invite. Although Kelsey was not planned for, she was staying out of Viv’s hair and that was enough for her. Having a few drinks and dancing with her closest friends was the perfect way to spend a holiday party, and she was starting to feel the drinks kicking in quickly.

That didn’t stop her from letting Georgie grab them more drinks as she continued to dance. At some point, Viv has lost sight of Ray. It didn’t really bother her, considering the last party he watched her like a Hawk and she could easily find him in the room. She assumed he was still with the huddle of the restaurant crew that made their claim of the kitchen and it was hard to see who all was in there. Some of the cooks had become older brothers to her, and she was fine that they were here; if Kelsey tried to overstep, they would have her back and make sure she knew that Ray was taken. She would have to be friendly with Kelsey eventually, even if she didn’t like the girl much. Maybe she could even set her up with one of the cooks to get her off of Ray’s side.

When Georgie came back, Viv was going to tease that she’d forgotten the drinks, but she had a look on her face that made her wonder what had happened in the short time that Georgie had stepped away from the dance floor. ”Okay, yeah I’m coming,” Viv says, excusing herself from the other guests and following Georgie out to their balcony. She shivered slightly from the cold but obviously Georgie needed to tell her something important. ”We could have gone into my room or something, we’ll freeze out here,” Viv tries to make a joke, leaning down against the balcony.
She looked over at Georgie, her face turning to concern. ”Did something happen, G? You know I’m here for you,” Viv says, turning fully to face Georgie. She was worried Georgie had heard some bad news about her family or a friend, and wanted to be there for her.

Georgie tried and failed to formulate the words in her head in the few seconds she had alone to herself before Viv appeared out on the balcony after her. She'd never had to drop a bomb like this, she'd never had to break someone's heart like this. She'd been there in the aftermath, of course, but that was different in so many ways. The hard part was done at that point. She couldn't even manage a smile as her friend stepped out onto the balcony. Viv’s comment about how they should have gone into her room instead just made George raise her eyebrows slightly with something that tried and failed to be a half smile. She couldn’t even manage a real smile with the news she had to tell. As Viv asked what was wrong, she exhaled slowly, watching her breath turn into fog and disappear into the night air. Georgie had always known that Viv deserved better than Ray, and the whole evening had really just confirmed this.

“When… when I went to get those drinks, I saw… She took a deep breath and turned for face Viv fully. She needed to just come out and say it. Beating around the bush wouldn't help anyone. “Kelsey and Ray were in the hall. Making out,” she blurted out. “I… I didn't want to ruin your night but I had to tell you now, I was afraid you’d go to the bathroom or something and see them and I… didn’t want you to find out like that.” She said, knowing she was over explaining herself but unable to just leave the revelation hanging in the air between them. “I’m sorry.” What else could she say? What were you supposed to say after telling someone something like that?

By creating Collectibles, you can reward your players with unique items that accentuate their character sheets.

Once an Item has been created, it can be spawned in the IC using /spawn Item Name (case-sensitive, as usual) — this can be followed with /take Item Name to retrieve the item into the current character's inventory.

Mobs

Give your Universe life by adding a Mob, which are auto-replenishing NPCs your players can interact with. Useful for some quick hack-and-slash fun!

Mobs can be automated spawns, like rats and bats, or full-on NPCs complete with conversation menus. Use them to enhance your player experience!
