Daniel raised his eyebrows very slightly at the human's question, leaning back in his seat with an almost inaudible chuckle as he folded his hands in his lap. “No, I haven't. I'm trusting 'It' will offer up a name quickly enough once he's able.” Topaz eyes left him for a moment, returning to the door when he felt the gaze of the newborn for a few seconds. He offered him a smile, knowing what his nerves must be doing right now, and then looked back at the human as Bella led the young vampire to a seat. She'd handle things.
For now, he returned his attention to the human's curiosity. “Vampires are just another species, like you humans, just perhaps a little bit higher up on the food chain (no offense intended, of course). We're not technically living, as I'm sure you can tell (feel free to check my pulse if you don't believe me). Hm...” He paused for a moment, trying to think of what else may have been relevant. “We drink blood, obviously. That's the only way we'll survive; we can't keep human food down any more. Some of our kind drink human blood... the taste is a thousand times better, and it gives us more energy. However, we prefer animal blood... the taste isn't as good, and it isn't as nourishing, but we don't have to kill or turn anyone to get it. That's why our eyes are gold...” He indicated himself and Bella, “And his eyes are red.” He indicated the newborn. “Our eyes are red to start with, because of the human blood left in our bodies.” He didn't add in the fact that the newborn would be so much stronger than them. While he was unstable like this, Daniel wasn't sure it was something he needed to know.
“As for the hunters...” He continued, “The reason they want us dead is obvious. We're seen as a threat to human society. If mice could find a way to try and eradicate cats, I'm sure they'd be all over it.” He sighed a bit, a little hiss through his teeth. “They don't understand that our type isn't a threat...frankly I don't think they'd listen if we tried to explain.”
“Now, about the transformation.” He shifted in his seat a bit, giving his arms a small stretch. “We vampires don't produce saliva, as you humans do. Instead, we produce a clear toxin. It doesn't do anything to our own bodies (although the toxins of another vampire will cause wounds to scar), but it's essentially what turns a human into one of us. To put it simply, it travels through the body, healing any wounds and altering the body as it does so. It takes three days for the process to be complete, at which point, the toxin shuts down the heart, and the transformation is complete. It's... a painful process. Right about now, it will feel like acid and fire are coursing through this man's bloodstream.” His eyes flickered down to the man laying out on the bed with a small 'tsk' sound from his throat. “He's handling it exceptionally well.”
“Well, I think that's all of it.” He smiled amiably and rested his chin in his hand, watching the human. “Any more questions?”
Suffering is nothing but the road:
You, the traveler, are sheer delight,
A little wisp of lovely, lilting light
Torn from a joy that pain cannot corrode.
