Chapter summary:
237 years ago, the last war of mankind came to a violent close after nearly three decades of chaos. The bombs that fell in the third week of April, year 2140, contained a lethal pathogen that killed within minutes by reproducing rapidly in the sinus cavities and eyes, breaking down the tissue as they spread into the brain, causing hemorraging and death. The company that had sold the biowarfare bombs to the eight main warring nations, a military corporation under multiple names, had full knowledge of the implications, and was justly destroyed in the fallout.
On April 15th, there were 8.2 billion people in the world. On April 18th, roughly 700 million remained. Also included in the casualty count was any wildlife in the effected areas, though as the bombs fell primarily on cities, the majority of the planet's ecosystem remained unharmed. Asia, the most densely populated of the continents, was the hardest hit, losing more than 96% of it's 4.4 billion inhabitants. To this day, it has lacked the population to organize itself into a nation, and remains an empty land sparsely populated by poor nomadic tribes.
After this brutal end of the war, mankind, so shattered by it's loss, took a century of relative peace to organize itself back into civilization. The five nations we know today, the UNAE, USS, CBT, EP, and NRF, modeled themselves after the dim memories of just government, and divided up the world among them. Each country was alloted a plot of land proportioned to the number of citizens it possessed, with factors such as available resources and habitability taken into full account.
When it was all done, it was made offical by the Treaty of Eona, a document outlining exactly how the next century would be spent and how the nations would cooperate during it. War was to be replaced by small, 600-man skirmishes on land set aside specifically for it, to keep from losing too much population. The continents of Australia, Africa, and Antarctica, which were left out of the territory claim due to the sparseness of habitable land, would be left as massive nature preserves until a time at which their extra land would be needed and terraformed. A full copy of the treaty can be found in pages 735-750 of your Reference section.
With the treaty signed and the nations established, the last problem to be tackled by the remaining humans of Earth was that of underpopulation. The billion humans on Earth at the time were simply not a large enough labor force to feed and manage itself in a structured society. Various methods were used, but none successful.
The problem was finally resolved with the introduction of a type of artificial human, a fully reproducing, sentient robotic-organic composite being with artificial intelligence and emotions. The company that produced them, Centurion Companies, made sure that they were, in terms of personality and intelligence, as human as any Homo sapiens. Dubbed "Cyborganics," they were first introduced into the population without anyone knowing what they were. As they looked, felt, acted, spoke, and moved like humans, nobody noticed the difference.
As you know, today, bots are an accepted and universal part of society. They were exposed after nearly three decades of extensive cover-ups. The governments, fearing revolt, immediately passed bills giving the bots full rights, attempting to prevent hate crimes. But their fears were groundless. To turn on the bots at that point would have been to abandon parents, wives, adopted children, friends and family. They had infiltrated society, and could not be removed. To this day, they remain.
