"Yggdrasil" [Possible Fantasy RP]

New to site, keep an open mind :o

So, an acquaintance and I have decided to create a fantasy-themed RP, and have managed to whip together some kind of introduction. Not very original, but still...
Only thing now is to find people to RP with, and create the thread itself - The latter part appears a bit fuzzy to me, since I'm not very familiar with the system on this, and other sites in general. For example, how are we to proceed? Was I supposed to create a topic here? Character-creation? Any tips?

" Yggdrasil;
The sole significant spot of landmass to be found among the azure waves of the World Ocean. An island perfectly shaped in the way of a crescent moon, divided in half by a chain of mountains known as Silfèrfell, where the mighty dwarves dwell inside of their enourmous stronghold called Jàrnheim.

The northern half of the island, the Northern Kingdom, is a beautiful land of lush forests, mirror-like lakes and green hills imperceptibly affected by the great War that once ravaged the realm centuries ago.
The Kingdom is mostly ruled by the nearly ancient race of humans, a noble and kind breed with intent to create a better world where all creatures may live in harmony. At least, that is what their self-proclaimed king and dictator presents themselves as, although his recent actions during his five decade reign have proven otherwise - Raised taxes in order to enrich the royal family and corrupt politicians, leaving countless of his more unfortunate subjects in extreme poverty. Many lives have been lost due to starvation and the unsanitary conditions people have been forced to endure in the big cities. The regime holds great influence there, unlike in the small towns and villages of the realm where people almost aren't affected at all by the strict government, apart from some new laws relating to the domestic trade; Trade caravans operated by the cunning trolls have been banned, for the reason that they constantly swindle people, and the royal authorities have been ordered to slay any violators spotted.
This unnecessary, and plain silly, act has received a lot of criticism: "How come human, dwarven and other merchants don't get their heads cut off, then? Surely, trolls don't trick us any more or less than other people?"
Freedom of religion has also been abolished, resulting in a lot of public mass executions held primarily in the human capital and seaport of Midgàrd, also referred to as the Point (Due to its location being at the far northeastern edge of Yggdrasil).
Along with the "heretics" brought to the stake and gallows come not only the regular thieves and murderers, but also people accused of opposing the King, often important political figures, but mostly ordinary citizens that got caught complaining about their somewhat uncongenial rule.
The once peaceful, and truly noble empire of humans have transformed into a nightmare world, where none may tread without being exposed to the rotten hand of death,

Though the situation is not completely hopeless, it seems: Rumors of a growing resistance with intent to fight the oppression began to spread to human settlements all over the north some time ago - And although most people just dismissed it as wishful thinking, the King felt threatened.
Despite his royal advisers' feeble attempts to discourage him, he has during the last few months sent out hundreds of his men in order to track down information about this possible threat to the throne.
Unfortunately, efforts have all been in vain so far, with nothing to show but barbaric acts of pillaging and slaughter caused by weary soldiers. It especially does look grim now during the winter, with thick snow covering the ground, and biting cold pushing deep inside ones body... "

And I believe we intend to continue from there, mostly improvising when it comes to characters, locations and story (With some restrictions ;) )

Yes this is in the correct section for this post.
As far as character creation is concerned it's basically a skeleton which the RP'ers fill out with fields such as "Name", "Equipment", "Race", "Age", etc
You just have to wait for a few more people to join then you post the In Character thread and away we go.
Also set a few ground-rules, a really common one is "No God-modding" for obvious reasons.

I'll try and help as much as I can. PM me if you need any more answers.

In addition to what Derotzka has already said, it also helps to post a separate info thread in the OOC along with the IC one.

Is there any more plot info you can share with us? What are we to expect in this RP? Is this a high fantasy with magic and dragons, or a low fantasy?

I'm not sure how to define the theme - I guess it should be classified as high fantasy, though not with magic and dragons 'round every corner. I myself would like a more discreet approach to those elements, but that's me.

Also, I get how to create a character :) I'm just not sure where to store it for others to see? I noticed a "My Characters"-thingy... Thing. On the top of the site. Oh well, I noticed it.
Em I supposed to write the char, then store it there, and if people want to know about it they just memorize the name from an RP and enter the... Place-thingy-location?

About rules, I might need some help to write down some basic rules; What more than this? Something in need of alteration or evaluation? Once done, it goes in the OOC-thread, emirite'?

It looks a bit thin. Also, should I write you people down on a list or something? Should we start with about 5 people?

You don't have to use the site's character thing, it's handy but not essential.
Once you've given the Character skeleton out in the OOC thread, we just copy the skeleton and fill it in then it's always on the OOC thread if anyone needs reference to it.

The rules look a little repeated. God-Modding, Power-playing and perfect characters are all very similar things, but you could keep them in if you are trying to really stress the point. I'd think about adding a minimum word limit so that you don't end up with:
Post 1:"He walked over to the man."
Post 2:"He saw the man walk over to him."
With a minimum word limit it keeps it much more interesting than one line replies.

You can start with as many or as few people as you want, you can also keep the OOC sign up open for people to join even after we've started if you want.

I think the name you are looking for is Game Master (GM).

Also, the theme sounds good to me.

Alright, hey everyone! I am FiskMunk's Co-worker on this project and has you have already noticed, he is kinda new to these kind of RP forums ;) Me on the other hand, is not.

Here's the continued bit that gives you an insight on how the Elf's and the Dwarfs have it for the moment:

At the borders that divides Yggdrasil from south and north there are big mountains and beneath them lives the honorable race of this land, The dwarfs. But there isn't just the dwarfs that walks in the these caverns and their own long lost halls. There are far more sinister things that live beneath Yggdrasil.

In the Dwarven capital stronghold, Jàrnheim, there is mostly just peace and joy. But Some of the casteless and criminals have begun to make more trouble than usually and it seems more and more by each passing day that all criminals and casteless have gone together into one giant brotherhood that strikes fear throughout the stronghold of Jàrnheim. The Guards are often killed on duty in certain areas and the trouble just seem to grow. Will the casteless and the criminals take over Jàrnheim at some point?

The king of the dwarfs is lying on his death bed and the two sons to the king is fighting over the throne and since the dying king refuses to make the choice, He wants the council to make the choice but the two sons disagrees with their father.

So it would seem that in the dwarven stronghold there is peace and joy, but the truth is, chaos and slaughter are about to begin.

In the Dark forests on the southern side of Yggdrasil the Elves have made their home. There they have rebuilt their long lost capital of Darás. The Elves had made the choice to not attack the humans, but that choice is about to be broken when Sidór, the Elven general, decides that the time to attack the humans are at hand. He comes up with a plan to try and reawaken the Demon lord, Acre, who is currently a stone statue in the middle of the elven capital who he fought alongside for so many decades ago. After much effort and work, The plan is set into motion and the rituals for Acre's awakening is being prepared.

That is more or less just an insight on how things are at the dwarf's and the Elf's at this point if someone wants to join in as one of those races.

Well then, I looked up some things on teh interwebz, so how about this?

" ~Rules~ Make sure to read and abide them. You're not an A-hole, are you?
*No God-Modding
*No Power-Play
*No explicit sexual acts and references, although it's allowed to be hinted IC.
*Feel free to insult people IC if your character has a reason for it, but not in OOC.
*Don't create an overly powerful or perfect character without the GMs' approval. Post you character and dicuss it in OOC, first. Or send one of the GMs a message.
*Take your time while writing, there's no need to respond as fast as the wind. Check spelling and grammar, and if you need help there's always Google. Try to write as much and detailed as you can, remember to use all five senses when describing the actions of your character, if appropriate. There's no need to explain how the entire digestive system works every time your character takes a bite of an apple.
*If you get a writer's block, you might want to inform other roleplayers. This also applies if you can't respond for other reasons (For example, if you're going away for a week to visit your grandparents), and the others might want to continue without you in that case.
*Keep OOC-chat to a minimum in the IC-thread, unless if you want to point something out. Long discussions belong in the OOC-thread.

If you have any questions about the setting or something else, don't be afraid to ask! "

I think that the last sentence might invite someone to begin it all, or however I'm supposed to describe it. Just a suggestion, I'm not demanding it ;P

When I said word limit I meant "minimum". It just stops one sentence replies because it's difficult to add and expand on one sentence.

Of course there should be no maximum word limit, write as much as you like, but I feel there should be a minimum. Even if it's something like:

Write at least 3-4 sentences
Or
Write at least one paragraph per post.

The rules look fine to me, except said minimum. But it's not compulsory you don't need a minimum. I feel it just improves the RP.

Edit: I'm up for a relatively bloody and dark story.

Also, is there a forum where you can get help with character-creation? For example, I don't want my character to appear as a Marty Stu (I took myself some time to learn what that means, hooray), and so I would like to get it approved by someone once it's finished :P

Well you know FiskMunk, They can perhaps write on location: in a camp outside Dalás or On a farm close to midgárd.

That's only some examples.

Someone might continue from that sentence, but there shouldn't only be humans in the thread you know. ;)

Even if there won't be anything like that, I'd still love to join in to your RP, so whenever you get the OOC up, just drop the link here and I'll be there to set up a character.

By "Underworld" do you mean like somekind of shadow realm? or some sort of "hell" place?

If so, then we'll see.

Otherwise all I can think of when you say "Underworld" Is like the world beneath Yggdrasil where the dwarfs lives and the group of players will probably make a journey down there at some point, yes.

Eastep & Sibrand; Myself, I just based it loosely on a couple of things from Norse mythology, with names and such - Like the capital city of Midgàrd, which alludes to the realm of humans. And I believe Jàrnheim to mean "Home of Iron", although it might be a crude translation.
I'm not sure what you people want, but I mentioned that I myself would prefer a more discreet approach to magic and otherwordly things. So if there was to be an [I]underworld[/] of sorts, I wouldn't mind a system of tunnels - How about a huge, HUGE mine, perhaps located beneath Silfèrfell?

I might be new to roleplaying, but at least I have some comprehension of writing. I think... I hope. Oh well, at least you can bask in my own awesomeness.

Also, that description got me thinking about the setting in general: Should we go with "medieval"? No guns, and such?

I like the idea with a huge system of tunnels.

Also, I would like to to be a bit medieval mixed with fantasy, so no guns. But bows and stuff can be there.

Well I don't know if you really need to reserve any posts. you could just edit the first post, copy and paste others descriptions there.

Just post the OOC thread in the OOC bit of the forum, then post your description of the world, the history and races, etc.
Then put the rules underneath that.
Then put the character skeleton beneath that and your character.

Then the RP'ers copy the skeleton, fill it in and post it onto the OOC for you to approve or disapprove. So all the Character skeletons will be stored on the OOC thread.

After you feel you have enough people post the IC and away we all go.
