"Heh. Twins," Edward snickered under his breath as he watched the Eaton girls race each other up the stairs with amusement.

He shuffled along to the top of the stairs with the rest of the kids, oohing and aahing at the castle's impressive architecture. The building seemed almost living and breathing, as if its corridors could swallow him up...

Listening to Hagrid explain the house system, he wondered how exactly he and his classmates would be sorted. His parents had told him about it, but a lot of what they said to him went in one ear and out the other. He remembered it was a sit-down sort of process, but didn't know much else about it.

"Hey Sandra, this is the moment we've been waiting for, eh?" he whispered, nudging the girl as he stepped into the great hall after the giant, filled with anticipation.

((XD we forgot about the anteroom, but oh well.))

Sandra stumbled a bit as she reached the top of the stairs, noticing her loose shoe laces for the first time. Abby was pouncing after them and gnawing at the tips. Grumbling, she crouched down and started tying them again, batting Abby away as she tried to "help". When she stood up she brought Abby up with her, determined to keep her from further mischief. She had heard only snatches of Hagrid's speech. All she could piece together was that the rest of the school was behind the doors in front of her and that they were supposed to score points to ear a cup of some sort.

So we're supposed to play a game? What are the rules? Is it a free for all? What's the goal? Questions bounced in her brain, her face pale in fear and nervousness. Edward's playful nudge startled her and she scrambled to remember why he'd done it. "Oh, er, yeah." She replied haltingly, her mouth dry. She walked mechanically after Edward. Her eyes darted across the room, eyes round and pupils dilated. She tried to keep from stepping on Ed's robes.

Soon they were lined up in front of the staff table and stood, facing the entire school. She had never had stage fright before, but now that she was facing an unknown task she couldn't help it. Her hands were sweaty, her now cheeks flushed, and she had a deer in the headlights look of one wanting to flee, but too startled to do so. She looked up, trying to avoid the eyes of all the strangers in front of her, and gasped. "I'ts just like the book said." she whispered, staring at the ceiling.

She previously had doubts about the letter, despite her mum's explainations and a trip to Diagon Alley. She was sure there was just some sort of trick to all the weird stuff she'd seen on her visit. Magnetized, perhaps pulled with invisible wires, the usual tricks for magicians. She had read as many books as she could while she was in the store, trying to puzzle out what they were doing. None of it made much sense to her, of course. Mere words making things fly? It seemed outrageous.

Now she couldn't dispute it though. The spell on the train? The still lake? The boats without sails, oars, or motors? She was entrenched in a world she could hardly have imagined existed. She was terrified, uprooted, and hoped she survived the year: a whole year without the comforting normalcies of the past. At least there's the holidays she thought, feeling slightly queasy.

((Wooo now to wait for the others :D *waits patiently*))

(( Sorry again for posting so soon. ))

As the doors opened, Tate's eyes became transfixed upon the ceiling, but his feet walked forwards following the group almost instinctively. Hovering in the air, several meters above each table in the hall were candles. Lit candles. Tate frowned with confusion, his brow deepening. Beyond the candles, was the night's sky. The stars shone greater than Tate had ever seen before, and the moon was full and glistening as if in a fairy tale. Tate's look of confusion only hardened, Didn't I just walk inside? he thought. The concept of holding objects in mid-air with magic was definitely a strange one, but making an entire roof disappear, or become invisible, without any consequences. That was just... Tate shook the image from his head and looked away, he was too tired from his day's travel to even begin to comprehend such a thing.

Looking away from the roof, Tate realized he was standing at the front of the Great Hall, with every student in the school. The older students examined the First Years intently, looking them up and down, and all around. Tate bit hard on his lip, so hard he began to taste the salty flavor of blood against his tongue. He looked down at the floor, and his feet which poked from the bottom of his robes.

The Headmistress, Professor McGonagall, was giving a speech of welcome and news to the school, but Tate did not pay attention. Instead he was desperately trying to avoid attention from the eyes of the school. By looking down, Tate didn't realize he was probably attracting more attention. McGonagall sat down in her tall, wooden chair and nodded politely at Hagrid.

The Giant began to speak about the house system and how they would be sorted. Again Tate was astonished.

(( Anyone who wants to start the Sorting process can, I have posted a bit too much lately. ))

Quintin nodded slighty, he could tell amelia had made an error, real or imagined-he'd remember the name though to ask his family about. "Politics, hmm?" He tilted his head and smiled "I can see that-I bet you'd be god..better than me at least" He gave her a lopsided grin "Not really interested in all the whining i've heard that goes on in it." He walked along with amelia, making a bit of small talk until the half-giant-hagrid, stopped and began telling them how the house system worked. "Exciting" He whispered in amelia's ear, his tone quite sarcastic. Most pure-bloods, save for a few more unusual famlies, told their children how hogwarts worked long before they got there.

As the doors swung open, the boy though to himself This must be a dream.... Luigi didn't bother to look up, or to his flank, he knew there were students around them, he could hear them. He also knew there was something other than the ceiling above him, but he knew that he would get a chance to look later.

Luigi was just able to see around the half-giant the teachers of the school. He first noticed Neville Longbottom, the Herbology professor, whom he had met at the Leaky Cauldron on his way to get supplies. Then he saw a rather aged, plump man, who Luigi had no idea who he was. The next person Luigi noticed, was someone he had heard about; a part-goblin professor, though he couldn't remember his name.

Before he could make out any more staff, the had reached reached the table and McGonnagall, the Headmistress stood. She then began to make a speech. Luigi didn't listen because he found most most welcome speeches, frankly, generic. Instead he took his chance to look at the ceiling. First, the boy was astonished by the thousands of floating candles, not a single drop of wax falling onto the heads of the students, not to mention the entire candles. Next, he was overawed at the (apparently) missing ceiling, though it was not cold in the vast hall.

While Luigi stared upward, he suddenly realized that McGonnagall had finished, and now in front of him was a rather old stool, which on top of was a rather old, pointed, hat. He heard 'stool,' and 'sorted,' from the giant, and Luigi was suddenly angry at himself for not realizing that Hagrid had been explaining how they were sorted. Damn! he thought, hoping he wouldn't be sorted first, so he could observe how it works.

Then the hat began to sing.

Addie crossed her arms tightly across her chest to keep them from shaking. She followed the other students until they were lined up in front of the staff table. The older students already knew their houses, and sat at their corresponding tables.

She still wasn't hearing much of what was happening, instead taking in the Great Hall. The enchanted ceiling was more beautiful that Charlotte had made it sound. Stars twinkled up above, as if there was no ceiling. It made Addie feel as if the Great Hall went up forever.

Then, she noticed something being brought out-- a stool, with an old had on top of it. Everyone grew silent, focused on the hat. Before she could wonder what was going on, a rip near the brim opened up, and the hat started to sing. Wide-eyed Addie watched, actually paying attention. What did this mean? They just had to put the hat on and it would suddenly know what house they belonged in?

Is that hat singing? Tate thought, even more confused than he was twenty minutes ago on the lake. He squinted heavily, just to make sure that it was not a trick of the light... or his brain. "This is really going to take some getting used to." he mumbled quietly from the back of the big group. Oh... I hope they don't do it alphabetically he growled in his head.

"Sarah Walton" Hagrid announced reading off a clipboard, which looked tiny in his gargantuan hands. The tall, thin figure of Sarah Walton pushed through the crowd of first years, clearly nervous, and made her way to the stool. Tate lifted up onto his tiptoes, and tried to steady himself to look over the crowd. He spiraled a little, and fell back onto his soles. He could no longer see the front, just hear it.

The hat began to speak as Hagrid rested it on Sarah's head. Tate stared on in amazement as it seemed to announce everything about her personality, her potential and her family. It appeared to be reading her mind. Oh my God. This is... Tate's thoughts became fragmented and stumbled, as he was so confused, amazed and astonished. "Slytherin!" the hat yelled, rising up, pointing. Sarah took the hat off her head, and walked over to the Slytherin table.

Tate stumbled backwards, slightly astonished. Although he had seen the process performed, he didn't quite believe it. "This day is just getting weirder and weirder." he mumbled, thinking about the train, the boat, the roof and now this. Hagrid waited very little time in shouting out the next name.

Minx walked quietly into the great hall with the rest of the new first years. She didn't let the nervousness that she could feel trembling throughout her entire body show. Instead, she returned the stares that a few older years had cast on her. Minx continued to let her gaze travel the hall. From what she could see, four long tables were set up in the large room, each table having a different color scheme. She sighed and raised a hand brush some hair from her face. She could already hear the large man in the front calling out names.

The candles floating near the ceiling flickered slightly. This caused Minx to glance up at them curiously, before noticing the sky that seemed to be the 'roof'. She raised an eyebrow. She already knew that it was an enchantment cast on the ceiling to portray the weather outside. She'd read it in Hogwarts: A History. Biting her lower lip, she cast a glance to the ground, trying her hardest to force out the nervous flutter in her stomach. She felt almost ill from it.

Kuro was still on her shoulder, peering around curiously. His claws dug into her skin, causing her to hold back a wince every now and again. It was obvious that he didn't like people being so close. And to be honest, neither did Minx. She hoped this would go by quickly.

((Well, since we're in the Ws, might as well get sorted. Let me know if I wasn't supposed to... And isn't the Sorting Hat's voice only heard in the person's head, until when it yells out the house?))

Addie watched as the first girl was called. She was sorted into Slytherin, and the table in green and silver stood and clapped, welcoming her. That was it? She blinked, maybe this wouldn't be so--"Addie Warner"

She just stood, petrified for a moment. Then she realized that Addie Warner was her name. Her legs felt boneless, weak and barely able to support her shaking frame as she stepped up to the stool. Addie could feel everybody's eyes on her as she sat down. When the hat was placed onto her head, it was so big it covered her eyes, and she couldn't see all the people watching her. Her heart was pounding for the second or two the hat was on her head, then-- "Ravenclaw!" Boomed the sorting hat.

She pulled off the hat and placed it back onto the stool as she stood. Now the Ravenclaw table was standing and clapping for her. Addie's legs were still a bit weak, but the sick feeling in her stomach had passed. She slumped into a vacant seat, her heart still pounding in her ears so that she couldn't hear the voices around her.

While Quintin seemed unamused at the sorting procedure, Amelia's jaw dropped in surprise: "I thought Mum and Dad were joking about the singing hat."

On the plus side, it didn't seem like he recognized Cassandra's name, so she could relax, at least until he asked his folks about it. Pushing the dread out of her thoughts, she watched the sorting procedure with a bemused expression, applauding when Sarah Walton was sorted into Slytherin, hoping to be joining her soon.

Finally, the moment came: "Amelia Selwyn!" announced the half-giant oaf. The girl made her way through the crowd of first-years, some of which moved for her, others of which she had to shove, and sat down on the stool, ankles crossed below, eyes crossed above as she glanced up at the talking hat that was placed on her head.

Quite a mind, I see...there's potential, oh yes, but a disregard for applying it in the academic field...you're smarter with people than books...and a rather rigid ideology, too...I know exactly what to do with you...

"SLYTHERIN!"

A wide smile cracked across Amelia's face. She hopped off the stool and skipped over to the Slytherin table, wedging herself between the Walton girl and her seventh-year cousin Megara, who wasn't very good for conversation at the moment, as she was falling asleep with her head on the table. She'd probably been having nightmares again about whatever that thing was that had started the feud. Poor thing...

Quintin grinned at amelia as she took her seat with slythrin house, and after several others were called, hagrid boomed out Quintin frost! Quintin bounded up the chair, and pulled the hat of-a slightly manic look in his eyes.
Hmm..brave, but ruthless and vicious as well..a good mind, if a bit unorthodox, and quite ambitious to boot-no tolerance for treachery on a personal level-my my, your a complicated young man, and so young to be so..cynical The hat clucked, before deciding to put him in the house of his choosing, as he had bits of every house-the cunning & ruthlessness of slythrin, the daring and reckless nature-gryffindor, loyal to the few he trusted & hardworking in his endevors, with a quick mind & fiendish imagination. SLYTHRIN! The tattered old hat screamed after an unusually long time in deciding. Quintin hopped down, eyes bright & face flushed with victory as he sat down across from amelia "We meet again my fair lady" He quipped, teasingly.

Zora looked around, nervously, as her fellow first years were called up one by one and told to sit on the stool. A hat was placed on their head, and after an amount of undetermined time-since some had it on longer than others- the hat burst out with the name of the house that student would be in.

She heard a Amelia's name being called, and a few minutes later, a boy with the last name of Frost was called. Zora glanced up at Hagrid, who was reading the names off of a list. Her last name started with an 'M' so it appeared that Hagrid had accidently skipped her name...Or else maybe it wasn't on there afterall? She hesitantly walked over to Hagrid and tugged lightly at the bottom of his shirt, which was as high as she went up to on him. Hagrid looked down, a slightly confused look on his face.

"Wha can I do fer yer? 'Tis no re-dos, so yer stuck with whatever house ye be in." Hagrid said, slightly softer than Zora had expected coming from him. Zora shook her head.

"No, um, sir... I think you forgot my name? Zoralyn McCloud?" Zora said in a quiet voice. She watched as Hagrid searched for her name. He grinned, looking down at her.

"Yer right, ma'am. Me thumb was coverin a section of the names. Go on up there!" Hagrid guided her towards the stool and placed the hat on her head. With a gasp, she heard a voice that seemed to come from the hat. It was debating where to put her. Clever, yes, very much so. Loyalty to her friends...Ah, muggle born, are we? Yes...yes...I see...shall it be..." Zora sat there with baited breath, waiting for it to place her.

"[b]RAVENCLAW!
" It shouted. The table with the other Ravenclaws broke out in applause, and Zora sighed in relief as she made her way to the table. She sat next to another first year who had just been sorted.

"Nerve wracking, isn't it?" Zora commented to the girl.

The long haired boy was one of those who Amelia had shoved out of the way. He scowled at her as she had put the odd hat on. After Zora, Luigi watched as seven more students were sorted: One Gryffindor, two Hufflepuff, three Slytherin, and one Ravenclaw. Then his name was called out, which surprised him, even though he knew he would have been called for at some point.

Luigi walked up to the stool, his legs feeling heavy, like lead. He sat on the stool awkwardly, and placed the hat on his head. The brim fell all the way to his shoulders, and he felt more embarrassed had ever been or would ever would be in his whole life, though in the end it wasn't that bad, was it?

He felt a cold chill as the hat started rambling in his mind.
Hmm, not the bravest lad, are you? But you are self-prerservant, and you like learning. What house is it for you? Certainly not Gryffindor, but where to put you...

Luigi suddenly jumped so hard that the hat flew off his head, when it shouted "Ravenclaw!"
he picked up the hat, put it on the stool, and started for the Hufflepuff table, then realised he was going to the wrong table and ran to the correct one.

Luigi sat down next to Addie, pondering about his house. Ravenclaws are smart...I don't feel smart... he thought.

Turning her attention away from her cousin, Amelia grinned as Quintin joined her at the Slytherin table--it was no big surprise, as she'd heard from her relatives that people usually got the House they wanted. "My good sir, if I didn't know any better, I'd think you were stalking me," she joked playfully, though it wasn't too far off from what she really thought: with her over-inflated ego, she definitely considered herself stalk-worthy.

"C-can we please not talk about stalking and things like that first thing in the morning?" Meg timidly asked as she surfaced in conscious just in time to watch most of the Sorting.

"It's night, Megs," Amelia had to remind her. "Honestly, you and your melodrama..."

Being as young as she was, Amelia had no idea just how manipulative and nasty these feuds could get, how they could break people. She didn't believe that anything that had happened that she wasn't made aware of could be that bad.

Minx listened as Zora and Luigi were called up, waiting for her name to be called. It didn't, in a way, seem like Hagrid was calling them in any particular order. She bit her lower lip lightly. Maybe she'd just wait till last to figure out if he missed her name. Before she could think about it further, the loud booming voice of the half-giant echoed through the hall.

"Minx Calix!"

Minx froze for a moment before quickly masking her expression. Carefully, she shifted through the rest of the first years, forcing herself to relax. She took her seat on the stool set up at the front, feeling everyone's eyes on her. She cringed inwardly. This was nerve racking. The hat was then placed on her head and she heard a voice speaking into her mind.

The hat's words were all but drowned out by the chatter in the great hall, and Minx didn't pay much attention to what it was saying. Finally, after sitting there for a few minutes having to listen to it's constant chatter in her mind, she snapped quietly, so no one could hear her. "Just hurry up and sort me."

'Aren't you the impatient one?' the hat commented in her head. 'Very well... Better be...-' Minx held her breath as she waited for the hat to speak the name of her house.

"SLYTHERIN!"

Minx blinked for a moment before sighing in relief. She had heard right. Slytherin. Her parents should be proud, at least.

Taking the hat from her head and handing it back to Hagrid, she walked off to the Slytherin table, taking a seat across from two others. A girl that seemed rather snobby, and a boy that looked... creepy. It was the only words she could use to describe them. She then peered at the girl, 'Megs', noting her rather timid appearance. She frowned before turning away from the scene, ignoring the rest of the students around her.

Minx glanced back up to the stool where the rest of the names were being called out one-by-one, to watch the rest of the sorting. The nervousness had faded quite a bit, so she no longer felt ill. But, she noticed, she was rather hungry. Minx hadn't been able to eat anything before going on the train. Far to excited, nervous; a jumble of emotions that had turned her off of eating anything.

The crowd of first years thinned quickly, or at least it seemed quickly to Tate. His palms started to become sweaty, which he wiped along his robes to dry off, just as the giant shouted out his name. "Tatersall Dayne"

Tate stumbled forwards between two boys, who looked at him as if he was a monster. As he walked up to the hat he was mortified, as well as Hagrid reading out his full name, he had to sit in front of at least a thousand people. He knew everyone else had to do it, but everyone else wasn't him. He blushed heavily, as his back was to the students.

Turning around as he reached the stool, he breathed heavily to cool down and not allow anyone to see him blushing. Tate lifted the hat and pulled it down on his head. His hair sprung up beneath the hat, pushing it up to the very top of his hair. He had to balance himself quickly to save it from falling, afterward he grabbed the edges of the hat tightly to keep it in place. This could not get anymore embarrassing. Tate thought as he shut his eyes from embarrassment.

Embarrassed? Definitely not Gryffindor then. The hat began speaking, almost mocking Tate. He'd seen it done many times on his fellow students, but as it sat on his own head he felt disgusted, almost violated. Hmmm. A sportsman; you would fit right in Hufflepuff with those kind of team values, but not much of a people person. So maybe Slyth -- No. Strange...I see a desire to learn, and a craving for knowledge and to improve, odd for a Dayne. Tate was puzzled as the hat said this. He knew his brother had been a Ravenclaw and so had his Grandmother, but his Grandmother wasn't a Dayne by name. It could be his parents... but he never met them, so he couldn't compare.

The hat arced upwards towards the non-existent ceiling and yelled. Ravenclaw! Tate released the hat, which bounced upwards. He caught the hat smoothly and put it back down on the stool, before making his way to the cheering Ravenclaw table. Still puzzled Tate took a seat at the end, opposite the other two first years. And watched the sorting.

Edward didn't move when the Selwyn girl shoved him--rather, he shoved back a little, but she probably hadn't noticed. He watched as she was sorted into Slytherin (no surprise there, not that he had anything against Slytherins, but she did seem the type), and got to see Zora get put into Ravenclaw and Minx get Slytherin. It almost seemed...too easy.

After a few more names, Hagrid announced, "Edward Nott!"

"Oh yeah, that's me," he remembered: he'd gotten a little distracted admiring a pretty third-year at the Hufflepuff table. He shuffled through the now-much-thinner crowd and took a seat on the stool.

This was certainly one clever hat. It knew more about him than he did himself, and he couldn't exactly argue with its assessment: loves a challenge, but isn't the studious...mhmm...

For a moment, it was trying to decide between Slytherin and Gryffindor, and then...

"GRYFFINDOR!"

Breathing a sigh of relief, Edward went over and took a seat at the Slytherin table. His brother glared over at him from the Slytherin end of the hall, and he just smirked triumphantly back. What did he care that his parents were going to skin him alive?

((lol, well that was a bit of a sorting mess XD))

When she finally tore her gaze from the ceiling, Sandra was surprised to find that a stool had been place between the first years and the waiting houses. Sitting on the stool was a worn and patched wizards hat, which, in itself, was nothing out of the ordinary. Neither was singing coming from it or the way it moved. However, everyone seemed to be staring at it intently, almost...respectfully. Are these people MAD? she thought, not noticing how much it did NOT sound like a recording until a few long moments of staring. By the time she realized that her stage fright had left her, although she still felt a bit queasy.

All we have to do is wear a singing hat? She watched intently as the hat sorted the first dozen students, noting how long it took for some to be sorted. Her mouth curved into a small smile as Zora was sorted, although she could not remember her name. A couple more students were called up to the hat before Hagrid made another mistake. Her eyebrows lowered in puzzlement as Hagrid announced both Tate and Minx's names before hers. It annoyed her that things were so disorderly and, scanning the crowd, she wasn't the only one. Of course, many were probably just hungry.

After Edward left to be sorted she felt a bit lonely. She was one of the few first years left and it didn't help that most of her new acquaintances were would not be in Ravenclaw. Looking around she caught one of the twins staring at her. Both looked away from each other as yet another name was recited.

"Sandra Klein." Hagrid called, his voice seeming far too loud to her ears. She smiled nervously as she stumbled away from the rest of the first years, not realizing that her legs had locked up earlier. After a couple of steps she'd righted herself and was soon sitting on the old wooden stool. She started to panic as the hat slid over her eyes, but later realized it was probably better that she couldn't see the others staring back at her. Not long after that thought passed she felt the presence of someone else in her head.

Lets see here... it said, it's clear voice resonating inside her skull. Her muscles tensed and eyes opened wide as if trying to see despite the pitch blackness. ...ah yes, you're of the Rosier line. Quite an ambitious lot...even your mother had her fair share. Odd that you don't. Sandra relaxed slightly, relieved that she had reached one of her mother's goals. Yes, not Slytherin, but perhaps Gryffindor? You do have some of her courage... Sandra shook her head slightly, knowing she didn't have THAT much courage. Of course, of course... it said, the tear that served as its mouth curving up in a smile. Well, then I shall place you in...

"RAVENCLAW!" The hat shouted, filling Sandra with relief. As soon as the hat was off her head she almost ran for the Ravenclaw table, her expression bright and optimistic. It felt like a heavy weight had been lifted off her shoulders as she sat down amid heartening applause. She sat there for a moment, her eyes glazed as she stared at Zora without really meaning to. I did it!

(( I'm assuming that is everyone. If not I will edit my post into something else. ))

Tate watched as the last few students were sorted into their houses. Hagrid smiled happily through his thick beard, and lifted the stool and sorting hat away from center stage. He took them beside the staff table and set them down before taking a seat for himself. Professor McGonagall rapped her fork lightly against a glass, standing from her seat she raised her hands in the air "Let the feast begin!" she said, flicking her wrists smoothly.

Tate sat, staring down as the empty plates around the table filled with food, a massive variety. Craning his neck to look down the length of the Ravenclaw table, Tate gawked awkwardly. The entire table had been flooded with food. The older years began eagerly to dig into the vast array of foodstuffs, as Tate still stared amazed. This is REALLY going to take some getting used to.

Slowly he reached across the table to pluck a chicken wing from a large bowl filled with them. Biting hard on the chicken Tate was shocked that it actually tasted like chicken. Thinking about all the magic began to give him a slight headache, so he shook it off. The first step in getting used to magic, is to just accept it. After all, the brooms in Quidditch fly, and that's magic. he repeatedly told himself.

As he ate, Tate looked at the two first years sitting opposite him and laughed, half amused half daunted. "This...is insane," he wheezed. Swallowing a large portion of chicken.

Quintin smiled politely at minx "Hello, im quintin-and thats amelia" He pointed to his first new aquantance. "So, how are you? Looking forward to any classes in particular?" He asked, trying to make small talk. Not something he was good at, admittedly, but still-he could if needed. He dug into the elf made food, gathering up several drumsticks-presumably from a chicken, but who knew? He ate with practiced efficency, having manners, but not a complete neatfreak like others. "Mmmm.." He wiped his moulth before talking again "So, what do you want to be when youu get out of here?" He asked the newcomer with what he hoped was a charming smile.
