What's The Point of A Paragraph? ( )

Postby Lord Saladin on Tue Mar 17, 2009 10:06 pm

As a writer, for a long time I struggled on what a paragraph should be. Was it to be a certain length? A thought process? Whenever you had the urge to press the 'Enter' key on your keyboard? Luckily, it's something I've now understand pretty well.

Anyway, as I was reading through the Confident Writing blog (which I found only today, and have been rather lost in for the majority of the day), I stumbled across this post which I feel explains it pretty well. A simple, concise and accurate discussion on the paragraph, which for young writers can be quite the stumbling block.

And, knowing that a fair amount of people on this site are indeed young teenagers, I felt that the link may well be of use to some of you.

So, why put the link in the Discussion & Debate area of the forum? I wanna know what you guys think. What are your views on paragraphing? Do you have any techniques you use to help you? I'm always interested in hearing the views of people who are perhaps still learning about the joys of the English language. As a writer, they offer great insight.

So, discuss away.

Well when I'm writing a story or typing up a post for a roleplay, I tend to type what I want that character to do, then make the results of his actions, the description of his area, and other various things into the paragraph around my central point.

Example:

Paul slowly walked down the middle of the empty street. The cool night breeze brought with it the smell of cooking from the nearby restaurant. To his right were dark, empty buildings, his left had a small lit-up cafe. His shoes thudded with every step, the emptiness of the road magnifying the sound to seem much louder than usual.
>Transition
A loud screeching brought Pauls attention up to a bright pair of headlights swerving around the corner. The man behind the wheel was obviously intoxicated, for the car swirved to a fro. Paul's legs seemed to be frozen in fear as the two bright beams headed straight at him...
Everything changes...
