The next few days passed smoothly, and Danni was pleased that Lucas seemed to be adjusting into the real world quite easily. She'd got him into a nice, easy routine and had so far managed to avoid disrupting it, and he appeared to be settling in quite nicely. They were currently sat in the livingroom, the television was on and Danni was curled up at one end of the sofa with her nose in a book - something that she would never have done in the old days but was quite usual now. She looked up when she heard a key turning in the lock, her heart automatically flying into her mouth. There was only one person it could be.
Sure enough, the sounds of heavy, staggered footsteps entering the hallway confirmed her fears, and a drunken slur called out from behind the door.
"Danni? You in?"
Danni closed her eyes, slowly lowering her book to rest in her lap. What was she meant to do? She hadn't told Lucas about Rick - there hadn't been any need to, she hadn't exactly been expecting him to come back - and she didn't want to guess how either would react to the other being there. Swallowing hard, she forced herself to reply. "Yeah. In here, Rick."
Rick staggered through the door, took one look round the room, and roared with laughter. "Jesus. I'm gone five minutes and you're already shacked up with a new one? Who's this?"
"This is Lucas. And you're drunk." Danni frowned, willing Rick to maintain his good mood, but his face soon darkened.
"Lucas, eh? The nutter? The one who got locked up for talking to himself? The one you left me for?"
"He is not a nutter, Rick. He lost his way but he's better now. And I didn't leave you at all, actually."
"No, because I got there first and saved you the hassle." Rick laughed again, darkly this time, and approached Lucas; Danni tensed, but could do nothing. "D'you know," he slurred, pushing his face close to Lucas'. "D'you know that she didn't tell me you even existed? She didn't. I only found out because some nice lady called me up asking for her because you were out of control. That's how I found out about you. Why d'you think that is, huh? Why didn't she tell me? Because she still has feelings for you? 'Cause that's what I thought at first."
"Rick, stop it!" Danni snapped, standing up abruptly, causing her book to fall to the floor. Rick merely waved a hand at her, silencing her.
"Now, Danni, shut up and let me speak, please." He returned his attention to Lucas. "Yeah, I thought she still loved you or something. But now that I actually see you, I get it. I get why she didn't tell me."
"Rick!"
"No! D'you wanna know why she didn't tell me? 'Cause she's ashamed. She's ashamed that she has to work with someone as messed up as you. 'Cause she knew you, you see, before you turned into whatever the hell you are now, and she can't stand the sight of you anymore, let alone the thought of someone like me knowing she had to socialize with some... thing like you."
"Rick!"
Rick turned on her, raising his hands in the air, a horrible smile on his face. "Well it's true, isn't it? That's why, isn't it? You're not really telling me you love that, are you?" He laughed, enjoying Danni's expression of horror and outrage as she stood there in the middle of the floor, her arms at her sides, clenching and un-clenching her fists, and then he turned to gauge Lucas' reaction.
