Danni closed her eyes as Christan shouted at her, confirming everything she'd just told Lucas, but at the same time annoying her even more. How dare he suggest such things? She'd get through this, she decided. Just to spite him.
Her eyes snapped open when Lucas tried to defend her, and she flinched at his reward. Her blood was boiling when Christan walked away, and the look on Lucas' face didn't help much. She briefly touched his arm, tears in her own eyes at his pain, and then left the room quickly, following his dad. She walked into the kitchen and slammed the door, just as he had, and rounded on him.
"How dare you?!" she shouted, amazed at herself. She'd always had such respect for Christan, had held him in the highest of esteems, but now all that was crumbling away after seeing him treat his own son that way. "How dare you judge me like that? Don't you think I know all that stuff? I knew exactly what I was signing up for when I asked your son to change me. I knew that I'd have to kill, I knew that I probably wouldn't be able to see my family again, I knew that it would be dangerous. I saw that at Eric's funeral, I saw that when Lucas got taken after Eric's funeral. But I accepted that, and I made the choice, and I don't regret it. And you know why? Because I love your son, Christan. I'm in love with him. And so what if I have a few problems with slaughtering people? Lucas does, too; I've seen it. Because we're not monsters, unlike some people I know." She glared at him, eyeing him with total and utter disgust. Although she'd always liked him, she hated that he could be so judgemental of her decisions, that he could do that to his own son. But she also hated the way she'd reacted, in some ways, and wondered momentarily whether she'd just made life a lot worse for both of them.
Without giving him a chance to reply, she left the room, slamming the door behind her once again, and walked back up to Lucas. She watched him warily, knowing he'd heard everything she'd just said and unsure of how he would react, but eventually she couldn't take the pain on his face anymore, and she wrapped her arms around him, drawing him close to her. "I love you," she whispered, holding him tightly. "I don't regret this at all. You know that, right? As long as I'm with you, I have everything I need." And this was true. She didn't care what Christan thought of her now; as long as she had Lucas she didn't want anything else, or need anyone else's approval. She could only hope he felt the same way.
